Thank you so much - I removed and cleaned my EGR valve today and your video was a great help. It's like a new car now! Next mission is to tackle cleaning the Turbo.....
Thanks for a great and detailed video. I cleaned the EGR on my Golf mk 4 TDI yesterday.(I had to order tools from USA). There was only 1-2 mm of oily black muck on the inside. I was surprised that after cleaning there was a big increase in low end torque and acceleration afterwards. Hoping for reduced emissions also
Lifesaver, I was getting "Engine Workshop!" (Mk1 Octavia "face-lift" 2004 model 1.9tdi) and flashing glow plug symbol, thought this was worth a shot so tried it. EGR was completely immobilised by crud buildup. Thorough clean (using oven cleaner as it happens), dry, touch of grease on the moving components, checked the vacuum diaphragms and replaced it. 9nce engine had warmed up the warning stopped and performance and fuel economy markedly improved.
Thanks for this! I tried this on my VW jetta mk 5 1.9 TDi. Before cleaning, dirty exhaust fumes outside and inside the car, also some loss of power. Afterwards, she purred like a kitten. Had extra power, cleaner fumes.
Hi. Thanks for posting this excellent video. This is EXACTLY what I needed! Been driving around with this prob for 9 months now. MOT is 9th Sept. My car will NOT pass unless I get this job done. Time to get my hands dirty. Thanks again! ~Rm😉
Thanks for this it was very helpful in cleaning my sons 2007 Audi A3 although his is a different variant with far more bolts to remove the order of the bolt removal under the EGR remained the same - very useful when ya can't see a thing
Absolute Massive cheers for these videos , I have owned my Golf Mk4 for 3 years since passing my test , I really want to learn how to maintain it properly myself and your videos are really clear and concise, you sort of answer the questions I have in my mind as I am watching ! Cheers n have a good Xmas 👍
Thank you so much for your comment, means a lot to hear that. I hope you continue to enjoy your golf for many more years of safe driving. Happy Christmas.
u answered my question....re: boost hose clips, I think sometimes they put the clips on before pushing the hoses in, I'm replacing the intercooler to inlet manifold piping on my golf.....for the money Ive spent I could almost have got a darkside developments uprated intercooler with all the bloody pipe work!
Nice video mate... very helpful walk through. Thanks for taking the time to shoot and upload it. Looking forward to reclaiming the power on my Octavia when I get around to cleaning mine :)
Great vid mate. You just made me want to to the replacement myself. It is a bit difficult but rather try than spend alot of money in a auto service. My EGR is leaking so I will replace it with a new one. My VW Sharan will be very happy soon. Great job!
All good an proper to just pull out the egr valve an clean it, if you want better response an reliability out of your turbo deisel engine, I suggest to pull the inlet manifold, intercooler out as well an clean it at the same time. Did it to my hilux 3.0l turbo diesel after I did a full Inlet cleanout, I fitted a catch can, I suggest getting one fitted after you do a full inlet cleanout.
Just did this on a VW TdI. These engines suffocate themselves and in the long run, they than pollute and consume more fuel than necessary because of the wear. Ingenuity and complexity at its finest. Thx politicians and environmentalists! May you inhale your own farts!
Yeah best way to clean it is to let it sit in a diesel bath, only the metal part for about 15 minutes to sock then take it out with a copper brush and clean it well. Also the seat of the egr valve needs good brushing also.
What was the reason you done another clean after the spray clean in your last video, after doing it both ways , would you still recommend an simple spray clean without stripping out the EGR valve, ?
hey guys. i have a audi a4 2.0, and i get white smoke somethimes, not all the time, my oil level and water level are ok....i have only e lambda sensor error. could it be from the egr or the lambda sensor?
What was the issue you had to diagnose or necessitate the cleaning of the EGR valve. I have done this job several times and I always drop the bolts plus my VW dealer doesnt make it easy as they have removed the parts dept and opened a Parts dept at a different location but only to trade! So getting any parts even those rubber o rings,/gaskets even as is customary I drop a bolt as I am a tad ham fisted due to no index finger, that is a mission to get.
what about intake manifold it was dirty too.. you do a video about how to clean it? sorry but i'm italian and i don't understand all you say.. but is a good video :D
Just wondering see the first vacuum pipe you removed from the top of the egr valve was exactly is it, recently bought a Vw bora but that pipe seems to be missing, if anyone can help thanks
I've seen some people go the whole hog, and remove the air intake manifold also, and use Mr Muscle to clean that too (although you used EGR cleaner, and I understand you CAN use brake cleaner also?). Pretty sure I've seen people literally soak the egr valve in brake cleaner, rather than just spraying it (which might have been easier than what you appeared to do?)
+Warwick Dean I've just been doing the job, kept spraying the carb stuff into the EGR, giving it a little time and then using a soft brush trying to clean the inside. Did manage to remove a far bit, will need to give it another shot tho. Nightmare of a job, and mucky job too!
I have 1.9 TDI is well and I am having a issue of oil leak. I wonder because of EGR. The oil is actually concentrates around the lid oil and around the EGR. Thank you for the video it maybe the issue.
Yeah, I was searching through comments for this. Mine is Passat b5.5 but i can't find info does it have gaskests or not. Don't want do disassemble egr only to find I'm missing stuff.
Hi thanks for video my golf 5 1.9tdi Has fitted with egr cooler on egr valve do I have to do the same processes to get it clean or different way any advice pls cos I know the egr need clean badly as it has fsh by vw and surely vw not clean the egr valve!!
Hi, thanks for commenting. You don't need to clean the EGR cooler, that just diverts coolant to the exhaust gases going into EGR to cool them down a bit. And you're right, VW wouldn't bother to clean an EGR valve but would likely charge you for a new one when it inevitably fails.
What are those holding clips called you removed at the start from the egr hose. There were two that you removed. I need some for my car and don't know the proper name

Bro , i got the same engine , when i remove the intelcooler , i see oil inside the EGR just like yours , and there is leaking oil from EGR in the end of the EGR , is that normal?
