      @@kyledunnuck1782 Anthony is insane. And what’s so bad about the Hunter? That’s a solid album too for what it is. Fantano seems more bothered by them “softening the blow” than actually focusing on what’s there. It truly is a good record. An actually comforting album. I think Fantano just had his mind set on what he expected it to be like. And it definitely wasn't that. But I can agree with him on the cheese factor. I kind of get the vibe that they're just making records to make records at this point. Like a job. Not for the creative outlet. Because a lot of the hooks and soaring vocals are in fact lazy. But nevertheless it's pretty cohesive and a nice background album

    As for the "cheesy" lyrics like "don't let time slip away", maybe it had to do with the album's theme over cancer and terminal illness, a theme which you didn't seem to bring up at all. Usually an album's story is an important part of it.

    I strongly disagree with this review.
    fantano basically diacarded the entire theme of the album and just chopped it down for not fulfilling his wants of what Mastodon music should be. I hate lazy ass accusations of reaching for commerciability and dumbing down their music to reach a broader audience argument. Mastodon isn't a band interested in commercial success (rock and metal doesn't sell). they also have changed and evolved with each record. THEY ARE NEVER GONNA MAKE ANOTHER CTS, or BM or Leviathan. they already did it and slayed it. they have evolved as musicians and grown as vocalists ( Brann and Troy especially) thru actually sing instead of growl, and shout.
    this is a fine record, worthy of being among their finest.

      I used to be in the same mindset as Fantano, especially after Crack the Skye. I really disliked The Hunter because *I* wanted their follow up album to essentially be Crack the Skye part 2. For a few years a was upset about it and constantly spouted the same stuff Fantano is saying here, until one day I watched an interview with Troy where he said something so simple that just flipped a switch in my head. He said "Why would we want to make the same album twice?". At that point I realized I had it all wrong and was able to re-listen to The Hunter without being burdened with my pre-conceived notions of what I said the album should be, and was able to absolutely fall in love with it, as well as OMRTS and Emperor. That simple sentence really changed my closed-mindedness when it comes to music as a whole and really allowed to to enjoy much more than I was prior to hearing it.

    tl;dr By all means this is not a metal or sludge album. Brett Hinds himself said that they're trying to move away from their roots and go towards a different path. I'm okay with that. I can see why a lot of people like this album. It appeals to a younger, "softer" (not an insult) crowd that simply likes (and this is a stretch) heavy rock. The rocking riffs and grunting vocals of Remisson are way gone. Ever since The Hunter, they've been pulling away from Lifesblood (Call of the Mastodon), Remission, Blood Mountain, etc.
    That's what progressive means. Disclaimer: Crack the Skye was their greatest and most successful attempt at going progressive. I loved it. Mastodon is no longer a metal/sludge band. Same as what Anthony said; Bands like Baroness are not either. Trust me when I say this. I have a tattoo based off of the artwork from Baroness' Purple (Credit: Marald Van Haasteren; Crossroads of Infinity) that takes up my entire back. I appreciate both the metal days and the progressive days. Although I'm not a huge fan of this Mastodon album, I can appreciate it for what it is. If you watch their series on "The Making of", you can see that the lyrics are really centered around the life situations and tragedies that they've had to deal with for the past 1.5-2 years. Bill's mother died of cancer and he's always been battling with his addictions (and fortunately beat them). Troy's wife had to deal with cancer as well. "The Sultan's Curse" is an alias of cancer. The entire story that unfolds throughout the album is about this as well, in a metaphorical sense. Their more progressive albums, including Crack the Skye, have had a story to them. This is a more personal note for the band's members.
    Being a fan of heavy sludge (Kylesa's early days, Black Tusk, Red Fang's heavier stuff, Baroness' First/Second/Third/Red Album, Neurosis) I will always pick the earlier days of sludge metal bands that go progressive over their more recent, lighter material. It's not harsh exactly, the review he gave. Anthony has his favorites. He's human. He has his own taste in music. He tries to remain unbiased but that's nearly impossible when music is such a major factor in one's life. I, for one, completely agree with his review. But, that doesn't mean I dislike this album. I'm seeing Mastodon tomorrow at Stage AE in Pittsburgh and will fully enjoy them playing their new album live. Of course, I'd like to see them play Lifesblood EP, Remisson, etc.. but I'm a fan of it all. Some people in the comments section have to realize that just because Anthony doesn't like it and says it's "bland" doesn't mean he thinks everyone should hate it. Nobody should think that. It's music. Everyone has a different taste for it.

  • @AaronClarity
    @AaronClarity 7 лет назад +84

    I'm always a bit confused by how an artist's new material pretty much HAS to be compared to their older stuff, you know? Like yeah, maybe Mastodon's not so heavy or "metal" anymore, they're like prog or whatever, so why not review the album as such? And not as a "watered down Mastodon from a decade ago". Feels like it doesn't allow the album to stand on its own, be whatever the musicians in the group want to represent nowadays. I get a lot of what you mean, but I'm still kinda digging this album. Steambreather's fucking great.

      Aaron Whence Because if a band that didn't have the discography behind them that Mastodon does put out an album like Emperor of Sand, I would listen to it once, think it was mediocre, and never listen to it again. Context is important in the development of a sound and it's particularly relevant when it comes to forming opinions on direction, progress, artistic vision, etc.

    • @AaronClarity
      @AaronClarity 7 лет назад +12

      Nice thoughts man, cheers! But also, when it comes to context; isn't the thematic background of an album even more important when it comes to, say, artistic vision? Especially since this here is a concept album. Context-wise I'd be very eager to hear someone discombobulate the artwork, the lyrics, the sounds relating to the theme or the story and their relationship to the music, rather than compare it all what the previous album did. Makes it seem like a "BAND review" (or a "Where are they now?"-segment) and not necessarily an "ALBUM review", you know?
      I'd like to also add that after my first listen of this album I did go "Well, it's not Crack The Skye." But what is it then, that's the question.

    • @chrisstans9606
      @chrisstans9606 7 лет назад

      Aaron Whence well as a band puts out albums it builds a name for itself and builds a fan base that likes that particular name. When u try to change the sound, u have to understand that the fan base will compare it to the old works because that is precisely what made them a fan. If slipknot started putting out country tunes, u would compare it to their old style and would most likely be disappointed as there metal songs are what gave them appeal thruout their career.
      That being said, change isn't inherently bad and a lot of recent albums of bands that I've liked have changed, with me still enjoying their sound and I disagree with him calling the album bland as I reasonably enjoyed it (but I'm admittedly biased as I enjoy when bands find a middle ground between really heavy sounds and really melodic ones)

      Matt Cooke I don't think it's about the subject matter, as much as it is reflective of their mental and emotional states as creators of art, and how they collectively expressed the broad range of traumas the subject matter created within their lives.
      That's just my take, but I think it gives a broader perspective on from what, exactly, this album was born. I think this RUclipsr missed that bit of insight that might change the way he appreciates this particular work of art.

      A lot of bad art can come from powerful emotional experiences. It doesn't diminish the importance of those experiences, it's just a reflection of the artist's skill if they can't translate them into moving art. I say this as a massive Mastodon fan (of their first four albums at least). I personally felt that Crack the Skye had much more powerful lyrics than any of the songs on this album imo, and more importantly the music was just more interesting.

    Just watched your review. I have listened to this album several times. Honestly, I think you make some valid points, but your rating is so low it can't be taken seriously. You come across as setting out to criticize the band before the review is even started. I understand some of your points. I won't argue that there is an effort here to appeal to a broader audience. I think they will tell you that was by design truthfully, so if this is your big beef with the band then leave it at that. This album is well crafted from top to bottom, which in today's music industry may seem like a futile effort. Many bands are questioning that medium altogether. I deem your rating of 4 out of 10 an insult to the band and their fans. Again, I think you make some valid points, but your rating is so low it can't be taken seriously.

How many times do they have to say that theyre not a bunch of pissed off 20 year olds anymore? Me personally, if i want to hear their old heavier music, i go listen to it. Its great. Theyve done it and they did it better than most if you ask me. The stuff theyve been making since Crack the Skye i love just as much. There are plenty of good sludge metal bands out there, not so much "radio rock" thats even half decent or worth a shit. Then again, my 2 cents isnt worth a shit either.

    Anthony, been watching your content for about a year now, never disagreed with you more than this. Emperor of Sand is a phenomenal album, and I hate to say it but you sound real pretentious in this video. This isn't watered-down or trying to "make it more unimaginative", and frankly that is fucking insulting to say about a band with as much talent as these guys just for wanting to keep making music they find to sound unique. This takes everything they succeeded with in the Remission days and shines some new light throughout their traditional formula. Sure, Show Yourself is a garbage track, but Precious Stones, Seambreather, Scorpion Breath and Jaguar God are all excellent examples of musical development through their career. I don't understand your complaints with this album whatsoever.

    I laugh at the fact that he thinks he knows what Mastodon is trying to prove. He seems to believe they have an agenda to be a mainstream, and that they are trying to become a syrupy pop rock band, e.g.: Linkin Park. Can't they just mature and write more mature music, not just teenage angst sci-fi concept albums? That was cool when I was young, but as a human being, I am growing older and evolving with a more broad world view. You know, real life situations, needing to see other perspectives, and enjoying some wacky stories. Mastodon is painting broader strokes with their brushes, armed with steroid infused musicianship, and soaring vocals. He is way too stuck in the past, just like the guy who wants to hear Reign in Blood and Master of Puppets over and over. Each new Mastodon album is different. I keep seeing him view things with the filter of what they should be, and not who they are now. I think that he is not able to separate himself objectively from their past discography, and not really let the newer material soak in. It is a pretty good ride. I do believe he has some valid points that pertain to the view by people who do not want Mastodon to change from what they were, but it is a pretty hollow argument for not liking the new material, which by many fan's view, is equally as good. They may not be my personal favorites yet, but they are not the crap that this guy insinuates they are.

    Cracks me the fuck up how because a band doesn't sound the same that they used to, that they are purposely "trying to be blander... more commercial, and easier to digest". No, simpletons... imagine this alternative... sometimes... brace yourselves... sometimes bands WRITE WHAT THE FUCK THEY GOT DAMN WANT TO! I know right? Mind-fucking-blowing. Look, I'll be the first to admit that I didn't like the Masta-tool version of the band that can be seen on some of their newer records (I actually can't really stand Crack The Skye), but this new album is exquisitely written. Every single note seems to have a purpose... and imo, it's quite apparent. This is most definitely one of my favorite Mastodon albums... not only does it "sound like Mastodon", but it also takes risks that work... and regardless of how "heavy" the music may be at times, the subject matter is as heavy as it gets and the songwriting is the best that it's been in quite some time. Again, just my opinion, but it's actually quite rare for bands to purposely focus on changing their sound to be more "bland", lmao.

He already seems to dislike Prog metal in particular, but I don't want the prog metal community's disapproval to stop him from doing reviews because even though I disagree with his opinions on the genre, doesn't mean I don't want him to make content about it.

    2:40 Okay. Tell me one fucking artist who hasn't gone mainstream in his carrier. There's no one.
    Every band changes their style over the years to make it less wild and stuff.
    Compare Korn's, Trivium's, Anthrax's, Metallica's, Slipknot's, Rise Against's and As I Lay Dying's style with their old ones.
    All of them got softer and more mainstream, it's just in the opinion of the listener which style is better (although I think that
    most bands go the wrong way with their change).
    It's not a crime to do it and I think Mastodon did a good job on the album. It's not as good as I expected it to be but it's
    already good because of the amount of feelings put in there.

Now I just pick and choose songs from their records since The Hunter. They're still great songwriters but their albums just aren't as tight and feel more like a collection of songs than a seamless story. Leviathan, Blood Mountain, and Crack the Skye is their flawless trilogy imo. Remission as a brutally heavy honorable mention ;)

    I like 'Show Yourself' more than every song on Meliora.

    Mastodon with The Hunter, which features tracks such as Black Tongue, Deathbound, and Spectrelight, sound like 'anything but a metal band', the Emperor of Sand is a 4, the Violent Sleep of Reason is 'not good', the last Lamb of God wasn't even worth reviewing, but all hail Ghost, apparently. Uhuh, okay.
    I wouldn't go as far as to say that you're the Armond White of metal reviews, Anthony, but CoverKillerNation you ain't.

    Show Yourself is terrible. It took me longer to unlock my phone than it did to decide to skip the song.

    I'm a big fan of Mastodon, it's a shame that I agree on the score. Funny how many fans lose their shit though.

      Because Anthony is a hip hop/rap head who forces himself to listen to rock and metal just so he can claim that he’s the biggest music guru on the interwebs. He doesn’t know shot about this genre, so he ends up making horrible takes when he reviews a rock album.

    If this was a QOTSA album, you'd give it 9.5. You need to judge music for what it is. You're so wrapped up in pre-conceptions about everything you review

    Seen these guys live at Bonnaroo a few years ago while tripping on lsd and as a hip hop head I finally understood the appeal of Metal... One of the greatest live performances I've ever seen...

    Give Brent a fucking break. HE WAS IN THE MOON. The moon has 1/10th the gravity of the earth (even less when you're IN IT). Consequently, its not going to be as heavy as usual.

    I used to be in the same camp as fantano but something about this album has really grown on me. There's a lot of really cool ideas and some great songs. It's not as good as their first four but I think it's by far the best thing they've done since CtS

      Watch one of his thinkpiece videos. Those highlight pretty well that no matter how much he dislikes an album, he knows very well that it's only his opinion and doesn't have any problems with people liking this stuff, or anything that he hates. I'm basically a Steven Wilson stan, so Anthony has already said things that pissed me off a little, but damn... I'm not coming to this guy to "validate" my taste. I'm curious about his opinion, and it's just natural that we don't always agree.

      Kenny Geiger Realize that it's just his opinion and if you like this album you should just continue liking it. Not sure why so many people feel offended and upset that he doesn't like the same music as them.

      Recognize that somebody somewhere absolutely hates any given thing that you love, then accept that sometimes those people will be people whose opinions you respect.
