I haven’t used my ipod classic 7th gen 160 gb for almost 5 years technicians can’t do anything to fix the hardware.. get to see your video and bought the specs needed. It works!! Thank you!!! big help yay!🙏🏼👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi. What do you call the parts that you need to covert the HD to SD card?
Can you make the storage from 160 GB to 256 GB?
This might sound a little bit crazy but I read this on a support thread and it miraculously fixed my ipod. if you lick around the edges of the ipod, just enough to get it a little bit damp, then with the palm of your hand slam hard, but not as hard as you can, your palm against the front screen. The apple sign should pop up. Immediately start toggling the hold, then press and hold the pause/ play button.
Works great with my iPod classic 5gen. and I even managed to fit a 1200mAh LiPo replacement battery.
I finally don't need to carry the stupid 3.5mm audio jack adapters with me all the time in order to play music on my car radio via the aux port.
If using a cheaper ZIF connector when connecting to an iPod, read this. I could not get it to consistently connect until I added a thin line of plastic to the end of the ZIF connecting to the board from the iPod to add the additional pressure to prevent the ZIF cable from becoming loose when re-assembling my iPod. If using a board like the one I purchased, I recommend trying that before throwing in the towel.
having this problem already opened my ipod 5 times and still cant seem to get it to hold in place
2020 and it worked for me! Thanks! I love the old girl and would hate to have given her up!
Hi, what is your iPod gen? And did u buy the same items? Thnks 4 u repply.
Just did this on a 5th gen and finally got it working. Seems that the small end of the hard drive ribbon 'ZIF' cable can be misaligned easily. If you're getting the sad face error at boot up, try re-seating the cable (even if you think it's secure).
poppyopi Yes 👍
no wonder i got sad face on boot.. thx..
4 years later this advice is still really valid. thanks from France (i used an aliexpress cheap Cf Adapter + cheap µSD adapter on iPod classic 6/7
Just did this with all the parts in the links. It worked, thank you so much! So I did have issues with taking the case off though. I bent some stuff up and ended up removing the two metal strips on the sides that have the tabs to keep the case together. The case still closes almost all the way and I have it in hard, clear case so I'm not to worried about it coming apart. Again, thank you!
Thanks for the information. I just finished switching from HD so SD card and it worked great. The only hard part was actually opening the iPod (7th Gen Classic)
Thanks!
Sounds amazing. 1 Year after you did it, is it still working? Can you give some tips in how you opened it and how you approached the whole thing, some things that might go wrong etc.
Have you used the same orange cf to sd adapter?
Jus didi this witha a 512 GB SD card, it worked! Thanks 4 the tip.
👍
Which brand SD card did you use?
Is it still working 3 months later and did you face any other problems that you normally didnt have before you installed it.
PS on which gen ipod did you do it on
Just ordered all the stuff. I'm hoping this will bring my iPod back to life after I dropped it one too many times
Good luck!!!
By the way it also will work with MicroSD

Thank you! Your video and the helpful comments allowed me to ditch to old mechanical drive. My music does seem to be playing slower? Oh wait, it's stoner doom, never mind.
Thanks Mate, thinking I need to replace the battery and I know my iPod skips tunes occasionally and was thinking it was the hard drive, so why not change out both? Thought this was possible but wasn't quite sure, but now I know. Cheers
Thank you. This worked perfectly! Used the links to get the exact parts. Was an easy fix. Great video!
Tanny Nanda Thanks
Is the cf adapter type 1 or 2?
What was the first part into which the CF adapter is inserted?
02:52 Insert SD to CF card Adapter
03:09 Connect the "CF with SD" to "CF Card Adapter to ZIF"
03:30 Connect the hard drive ribbon cable to "CF Card Adapter to ZIF"
03:44 Connect the 2nd side of the hard drive ribbon cable to ZIF connector on the iPod motherboard
Hey mate, do you have any idea if I can use a proper cf card on this instead of the adapter?
Yes
What is the storage limit compatible with the cf to sd adaptor
I tested with 512 just dont have a bigger sd to try
The cable that attaches to the iPod motherboard and the ZIF, did you get that separately? I have all the parts but my ribbon cable for the iPod hard drive is a lot smaller
No i used the old one that was attached to the hard drive
if he really use that card to open it up I'm steve jobs
Hi steve jobs
Its not a new ipod like you can see from what's you see inside...
I got it from ebay and yes its so easy to open it up.
Freelancer Gamer lmao your comment replies are hilarious 😂 *Sassy* lol
you cannot be steve jobs cos u are still alive... lol
I just open my 5.5 gen with fingernail
It was probably already open before. So it was just tight but not closed.
and how or where do you use the 2 flat white cables that come with the cf adapter?
You don't need them
what version is that ipod?
@@brianjaviervazquezvazquez9035 30GB iPod Classic 5th Gen U2 Special Edition
Awesome worked. Glad I didn't have to throw out my ipod.
Thanks for update
Hey dude, any chance you can be a bit more clear on the "Connect the hard drive ribbon cable to "CF Card Adapter to ZIF" part, as in, do i close the clip in between the two white lines or...? Thanks!!
Sure...
03:36 "Connect the hard drive ribbon cable to "CF Card Adapter to ZIF"
Make sure that you close the clips on the edge of the white line and not pushing it inside till the end.
thanks for this vid! will be attempting to repair mines once the parts come in. i went with a 250gb micro sd and adapter.
Did it work out for you?
does it also work with the compact flash adapter - micro sd? thank you
Yes check out this video I made

can you give out info on the board part? I want to buy the parts and try this. Thank you.
OK, I found it. never mind.
OMG! Amazing restoration....
this is a type 1 sdcx adapter or a type 2? for my ipod mini i used a type 2 and fits fine but this is a type 1 correct ? also how is the quality of the zif adapter and the cf adapter i wanna do this on an ipod video i got for cheap and see how it turns out
at 02:18 you can see that this is type 1
Everything still works great
Hmm I wonder if a dual slot would work for this application what are your thoughts? I see they have on amazon
If they work as a single one then probably it will work
@@FreelancerGamer Negative got one from amazon used 3 pairs of micro sd cards tried everything and wont work, heck i even tried with just one card and just got a constant restore loop on itunes so this is a no go for me at least.
@@MrEljefe0000 Thanks for the update
Do you think that one micrsd card would do the same work inside sd adapter?
Yes it will work.
What if you put in a larger sized SD card? I have over 125gb of music on mine...not that I couldn't cull some but...
128GB SD works for sure if you more bigger SD you can test it out probably will work as well
hey I'm trying to upgrade my ipod but confused choosing which cf to zif board should I use, the iflash one is expensive but guaranteed to work I think, or this cheaper board, I personally choose the cheaper one but afraid it won't work. how about your ipod now? still works?
Still working... you can start with cheaper one and then maximum take the iFlash-CF for $18 that way you maximum loose $2-3 on the CF to ZIF.
@@FreelancerGamer Thanks 😁
What is the extra adapter needed for an ipod Gen 4?
chill1992ful 4th Gen iPod to iFlash Converter
I have the exact same ipod as you and did yours close all the way or did you have very little openage? if it did seal all the way, what did you do?
My close all the way... just close it back...
+Rainbow Cash can I used a WiFi cf adapter for the ipod classic?
Please can you elaborate if this trick would work on a laptop??? Dell Latitude XT
I am unable find its HDD or SSD at local markets and importing one is costing me twice the current cost of my machine.
Any comments would be helpful
I've tried this and it works BUT I got rid of the flash adaptor board (green bit) after having some slow down issues here and there, replaced it with the Iflash, works perfect now
+Gibson Weasel the only problem with iflash that it cost $20+ and CF to ZIF cost only $3
Please recommend me for a type of CF card to SD card due to eBay has a lot of them, thank you very much.
You see what I ordered its still working
you can order the same
Another hand video with horrible music. Commentary is what makes a good video!
Hey Freelancer Gamer, is there any advice between the lines in here? Like the format of the SD card? Does it work with a T-flash/MicroSD card as well? Does it work with the latest iPod classic Gen (late 2009) ??
iTunes will format the SD
Tested with SD and Micro SD both working the same (i will upload a new video with micro SD in a few days)
Tested with Gen 5-7
Thanks.
Hi Freelancer Gamer, were you able to upload a video with MicroSD card? I have some spare MicroSD's and adapters that I thought I could try on my 5th Gen and pass down to my niece for her long commute to school. Thanks
Ive done this Mod twice the first time was perfect no issues. Second ipod I have tried appears to have worked but keeps saying "ok to disconnect" immediately after I connect it to a PC or iTunes. Hard resetting doesnt work either (it just says "ok to disconnect immediately when you do) and my pc & iTunes do not recognise when it is connected (pc makes the notification noise that a USB device has been connected but thats it). Anyone else ran into this? If so how did you get around it?
Good Vid!Any reason for not using a micro sd card?
No
I plan on doing the same thing; putting a micro SD into and SD adapter :D

does the 120 gb 7 gen uses the same ribbon cable as the 160 gb 7 gen for the hard drive? I have a SSD that it was installed in my 160 gb ipod and will like to use it in a 120 gb 7 gen. it's threes any hardware limitation on the 120?
Probably the same
Hey, I got a question. Do you have to put the SD card facing down on the inside of the iPod, or you can do it other way around? I'm concerned about shortage, polarity and such, and don't want to fry the iPod during the progress :)
The hard drive ribbon cable is too short to flip it over so its the only option...
But its working great :)
is it possible it will read more than that? the adapters I see say 64gb max. I have larger ones that I wanted to try.maybe even more than 1 card totalling 256 or 512
I tested with 128 GB SD card (you can see it in the video)
i have ipod classic 160gb 7thgen will it fit ? thanks, nice video
Yes
Thanks
can i use a double micro sd cf adaptor will it work and fit?
can you tell me the sd seller in ebay you bought the sd card ,thanks for the reply
In what formating the SD card should be? FAT32? NTFS?
The iTunes will restore it in both option
Great! I'll try this as soon as I can. Mine is model A1238 (5th gen)
I worked just fine. Thank you!
What type cf card adapter type 1 or 2
I have a 32 gb cf card (I bought it for an older camera but it didn't work) and I have been thinking about doing this myself. My problem is a little weird though because my iPod still works but when I connect it to my PC it says device is not recognized. I have thought that maybe replacing the drive would fix the problem but it could be the iPods plug, and I was wondering if this is an easy replacement. Either way it would be nice to just have it working again as I really like the older iPods and don't enjoy using my iPod touch as much.
OK then lets start step by step
1) Make sure that your iPod is charged
2) Try to reset your iPod just hold the "Menu" and center buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo then try to connect it to your PC
3) Try another USB port on your PC
4) Try another cable
After all of that let me know if it helped and do you see the device in the device manager
@@FreelancerGamer I have been using an older powerbook g4, and my iPod touch works and is recognized but my iPod classic is not. I wound up taking it apart and taking a look at it and it seems that there is a burnt capacitor on the logic board. Either way I would need to replace the logic board to replace the 40 pin connector, so as it stands I will just call it a loss and either get another one that is actually working or just stick with the touch.

where are these adapters available?
All the links in the description
I know it's stated in the title, but will this work with the same exact items on a 7G of 160gb?
Yes
is 128 the largest size card that the 5th gen will recognize? Also does the SD card use about the same amount of battery as the original OEM hard drive?
thanks for the video, I want to do this ASAP.
I have to replace my battery so I figured if I'm going to have to open the ipod i might as well do this as well
jcashisking Hi, I just don't have a bigger SD to test it out...
If i will find one i will retest it.
About the battery i think it use less battery but im not sure about it because i didn't measure the time before and after replace.
But for sure its working much faster :)
Also i tested with micro sd (i will upload the video very soon) and it working with micro sd too.
Thanks for watching!!!
if you have any additional questions feel free to ask them :)
I just got the dual sd card, a battery & 1 128gb sd card so I will be hooking it all up this weekend. I haven't had a working ipod in years & look forward to finally having it again. PLus I'll get another sd card in time.
it was only 60 bucks for 128 gb. I don't foresee needing more that 256gb. 128 might even be sufficient for me at least
Great
is it faster than ssd on ipod? sometimes slower can be faster depending on the device
Working very fast :)
Just want to say, beware of counterfeit U2 iPods on Ebay. There are people selling "refurbished" U2 versions which are clearly not original. When you ask to see the internal serial number (In the about) they either block you, ignore you, or say they don't have time to tell you what it is. This is because the internal serial number does not match the serial number on the case. This is because it is a logic board from a non U2 version.
Thanks for the info
works in a ipod photo 4th generation?
thanks!
I don't have 4th Gen to test it...
Does the cf adapter hd got loose inside of the ipod? Like When you move it or walk around

Finally got my zif cf adapter from china a month later, lol. Managed to fit everything together but I'm getting a red X on screen once everything is installed. Any ideas?
i hope u could answer please ...but if my iPod has that little red x, could I still be able to do this to make my iPod work again?
The red X usually a hard drive problem. Is there any error number? If not then try
1) Reset your ipod by press and holding the Menu and Center buttons together until you see the Apple logo
2) Try to format your ipod from the PC and restore it with itunes
3) Make sure that its not a battery problem by charging your ipod
...
Let me know if it helped or just try to replace the hard drive if its a hard drive problem and not motherboard or any loose connector.
Hi, I have two questions:
1) are these parts the ones advertise don ebay? Especially the adapters, I saw some for 2 bucks or so...
2) Is there a maximum size for the sd card? I think the ipod on the video is 5.5G correct? But I have a 5G, so I'm not sure if the maximum size changes..
thanks!
1) Yes all the parts from ebay and yes it cost a few bucks i even added a link to the seller that i ordered from
In this video i showed the cheapest way how to replace hard drive with SD
If you want you can buy SD Card Adapter to ZIF Connector or even micro SD Adapter to ZIF Connector but it will cost you much more money.
2) I don't know the limit but 128GB works great and probably 256GB will work too :)
My iPod was 30GB iPod Classic 5th Gen U2 Special Edition and now its 116GB iPod so we have the same iPods

I got it to work by doing these steps (if you have a mac)
1) Connect you ipod to your mac
2) ignore the ipod needs to be restored from iTunes
3) go to desk utilities and click on your ipod
4) press on the first aid
5) after it is done, press repair disk
6) after it is done, go to the pop up Itunes message and click restore
7) go through all the steps and wait for the loading bar and it will say ipod is restoring
8) if it worked, then it would say welcome to your new ipod

will a cf adapter crash the same way as a regular hard drive on an ipod?
What do you mean?
the ipod I have got overloaded because windows was not recognizing it.
The cf adapter wouldn't crash the same way as a hard drive because a hard drive uses disk storage whereas the cf adapter uses microchip storage which makes it much safer. Also since the iPod's OS is downloaded onto the cf adapter, it would fix the issue of it not being recognized by windows. I had the same problem with mine.
Thank you.

If it keeps saying that you have "very low battery" then probably you have a problem with a battery.
Try to replace the battery or try to charge it before you connect to the PC

will this work with a 256g card as well?
I personally tested with 128 GB but there are some people that told me that it works with 256 GB too
ok I completed the install with 256g card. ituens restored the ipod. synced my library aprox 156g of music. Itunes says sync complete. i eject the ipod and is says no music. My computer shows the ipod has 158g of data on the card. itunes will not recognize the ipod. I format the ipod with fat 32. sync a few albums, works fine. keep adding til i get to aprox 80g then same issue. Any idea whats going on? Im on itunes version 12.10.0.7
on win 10. Thanks
How high, can you go on the GB's?
I tested 128 GB but some people here tested with 256 GB and it worked
in my case, the sd show in the windows explorer, I can format it, and manipulate archives. But when I try to restore in iTunes, it restarts, then becames a loop. I'm stuck
You fixed it?
Would I be able to transfer all my music to the sd card before installing it to the ipod?
You still need to use iTunes to do it.
Could you please tell me if I have to close the ipod completely after installing ,or can I leave it slightly open? ( I case I need to try again) as I cannot get past the red circle, I have tried realignment about 16 times but still no luck.
Thanks for the video
You don't have to close it.
The most complicated part in all this process is to "Connect the hard drive ribbon cable to "CF Card Adapter to ZIF"
03:36
Make sure that you close the clips on the edge of the white line and not pushing it inside till the end.
It can take a few attempts but it will work if you align it and clamp in the right way.
Is this method working also for ipod classic 160gb?
Yes
Can I install a 500 gb sd card with the same CF Card Adapter and CF Card Adapter to ZIF Connector? Mine is already 160GB Thank you.
Need to try
I don't have 500 gb sd card :(
I tried that cheap CF converter and it didn't work. It's been a few years but I'm pretty sure I reseated the ZIF cable a billion times with no luck before giving up and ordering an iFlash card which worked instantly.
iFlash cost much more money then the way I showed and its works for sure
@@FreelancerGamer I know, but I had a bad experience witht the cheap one so I decided to not take another chance. I'm fairly certain I tried every trick listed in the comments to get it to work and nothing happened.
The iflash converter contains zero logic just a PCB with 2 connectors while the Chinese one has resistors and capacitors so I’d argue it’s designed better. The one you had probably had a bad capacitor or solder joint.
Ipod Video Black 60GB with replacement hard drive (identical drive swap) Another odd method of sorting mine out !
Remove and replace old hard drive. Rebuild Ipod and power up press and hold Menu and Center button to force reboot. As soon as Ipod Reboots Hold Back (
can not get past the circled red X in middle of screen with the apple.com/support/ipod message
saw a comment suggesting invert converter (flip over and install hard drive ribbon that way- aka now converter and sd card are facing inward), worked like a charm, thanks all!!!!

would this allow you to bypass itunes?
No 😭
I keep having a restore boot loop sorta thing...Been trying tons of things to get it to work. I restore, iTunes says it's complete and to keep it plugged in and it will soon pop up again. I leave it plugged in and sure enough, it pops up in iTunes begging to be restored. If I unplug it no os is installed and just asks for me to restore with iTunes. Any help or insight would be appreciated! Also, I have tried 3 different sd cards in which I have restored to fat 32. Thanks!
Can you try another cable and another usb slot?
@@FreelancerGamer Yeah, I've done both of those as well. Unfortunately...
I'm in the same situation as you, what could it be???
for an ipod classic 7 th generation with 160 gb it's ok to use a 256 gb memory?
like that PNY Elite Performance 256 GB High Speed SDXC Class 10 UHS-I, U3 up to 95 MB/Sec Flash Card
I don't have a 256GB SD to test it :(
I will try to find a friend who have a 256GB and borrow it for a test and will let you know if it worked.
Freelancer Gamer ok perfect
will it work with my 2007 iPod classic 80gig
paul green why not?
As long as it is 5th gen and up. 4th gen and lower used ide intead of the data zif connector that the 5th gen and higher iPods used.
this has to be the most annoying song ive ever heard
Then just mute the video and play any other music in the background.

You have a channel too so you know that we can use only CC music or buy music :(
Fair.. But my dude, there is so much royalty free music that does not contain ear-piercingly squeaky synths

My ribbon that connects the iPod to the new CF card adapter (i.e. the old hard-drive) is not as wide as this one. I cannot find one for sale. Can anyone help? (I have an 160gb iPod classic from 2008)
