You’ve inspired me to rejuvenate my two iPod 4th gen classics, one is mono and the other is color. I already replaced the batteries, but will now upgrade from 20 GB to 128 GB flash. I know it’s easier to buy a new, old stock iPod 4th gen Touch with 32 GB for $70, but that’s not as much fun. Thanks for your videos. I subscribed.
The logic is obvious if you love your music without completely depending on streaming services, this truly is the way to GO! Listening to FLAC, AFAC, or WAV maintains the quality of your tunes...
I bought 2 years ago an iPod video 5th generation without hard drive. So i bought a CF adapter and a new ribbon cable(cause old cable was damaged) and a friend gift me a 16gb CF. It's not a big Memory but it's good for keeping some Songs
@@teogeorge3987 I now have a 5th, 6th and 7th running upgraded batteries and flash storage with their respective tarkan adaptors. I have Rockbox on the 6th and 7th gen, but I have a 4th gen project that I just started.
M. Guillermo How did your 4th gen project go? I just restored a 4th gen and didn't know if the boy supported 256GB but it did! Not sure on song limits though.

That's cool they gave you the instructions lol. Not that it was difficult. Hardest part is opening the ipod. Great video. Just resurrected a 6th gen classic w/128GB SD, new battery and replacing the damaged hold/headphone assy since when I removed the battery I broke the ribbon cable some how. Looking to get a few more good years out of it! Thanks again!

Comment about the end of your video: I never had wheel-based iPod growing up, just a SanDisk MP3 player that I flashed up with Rockbox and, when I'd saved up for it, a 5th gen iPod touch. I've always been a Mac fan and loved the concept of the click wheel interface. After seeing a few videos like this and some threads on Reddit, I made the decision to get a couple of 'parts and repair' iPods on eBay and try my hand at opening them up and refurbishing them. I screwed up the first couple of attempts, but ended up with one that worked pretty decently. With that first project out of the way, I've ordered a 7th gen iPod and iFlash adapter to do up as a new daily driver iPod. One of my coworkers offered to pay me to upgrade his iPod if mine goes well, so wish me luck 🤞
Thanks, you had the information I've been looking for which is formatting the new SD card for the iPod. I looked at the iFlash site and there were articles about formatting but it seemed like that was for formatting on a PC not a Mac. I have a old 5.5 gen iPod with an original "Tarkan" adapter I guess Tarkan has revamped now calling them iFlash. My adapter looks very different. My SDXC card mounts from the side not from the top. Good to know a new SDXC card doesn't need formatting prior to installing into adapter...pretty important info. The iFlash sight should say that maybe they do but I couldn't find it.
I recently purchased an ipod 5.5 30 gb with the Wolfson dac for around $85. I've ordered the iflash sd drive which will then have a 64gb sd card (plenty of storage for me) and will also install a new battery while I got the ipod opened up. Well worth the cost and work. Your video was really useful.
Awesome Roger, let us know how it all goes for you. It's great to hear so many iPods are being kept alive and brought up to date. Thanks for the message.
@@DcSoundOp all done, little bit tricky as I've old eyes 😁 but got there in the end, music loading onto refurbed ipod as I type this. Thanks again for the useful info.
I just replaced the battery and a screen from an old iPod video I had. The battery was so bad it would die in under 5 minutes. If I knew about the SD card upgrade, I would have bought a kit and done that too. Not that I need more space, more that I don't expect much more life out of a spinning hard drive. I've been using it as a jukebox on my stereo in the living room. My spouse isn't very tech savvy but has had iPods, so it makes it easy on them.
Now that you've done the battery & screen and know how to get inside the iPod, the SD card is really an easy swap. I agree though, I'll never fill this much space with music! Thanks for the message & for checking out the video.
For the screws attach a little magnet to the bottom case and put the screws there. So it becomes a very handy tray for this. For the cards: If you have a larger card tha 64Gb you need to format it as Fat32, since the larger cards are formatted as exFat by default and the Ipod may have issues with it
The reason upgrading the 5th gen ipod is worthwhile is that it has one of the best DACs in any mp3 player ever made which is why I've just ordered the parts for my old 5th gen Ipod Video. Its stuck on a white screen, not recognized on iTunes or Windows so I think the hard drive is kaput. Gonna try a 512gb microSD card, 3000mah battery and capacitors mod.
Capacitor mod only works through the 30 pin, you probably already know that. But if you did not you need to make another adapter for the 30pin to headphone for superior audio, and maybe a headphone amp.
How did your 512 mod go? I'm considering taking my old 30G iPod to something greater; 256 or 512, but I've learned that the 30G iPod is RAM limited to 32mb. The iPod OS creates a database for the contents in that RAM which limits the storage capacity of the HD. 80G iPods have 64mb of RAM with greater capacity.
Hey man, great video. I have an old iPod that is actually in pretty good shape even if the battery doesn't hold as well as it used to. Anyway, just wanted to let you know I enjoyed this video and enjoy watching all your stuff.
@DcSoundOp Well everything worked and one TB was recognized on my ipod fifth gen thirty gigabyte. I successfully loaded all of my music onto it, And even a few movies and t v shows and everything played just fine. The problem happened when I went to install rock box. Upon reboot the ipod is bricked. I just get a sad mac face and then it flashes to low battery even though it's a brand new 3000mAh battery. I know my next step is to format the drive and try again. , but I don't have a way to connect my mSata drive into my pc. It's back to the drawing board for me, waiting on more parts purchased from ebay.(new mSata, mSata to USB, a few more iflashs, a few colored cases.) It's all or nothing. I found my new hobby and am building a new collection. I'm still in recovery from watch collecting and ipods are WAY cheaper.

Hey Arslaan, are you using the iFlash CF adapter or another brand? I didn't have any luck with the generic one I had, but I know lots of folks online have used them. Also, how are you using SD cards in a CF adapter? Is there another adapter between those? Do your SD cards have the write protect tab closed? Hey I was wondering if your replacement face plate had any tolerance issues when installing? I've tried so many and they all have issues with tolerance, either leaving too much of a gap between the plate and the wheel or jamming the buttons after installation.
Luckily no issues with this one. It doesn't feel quite as nice as the original apple one of course, but it has not had any issues clearing the buttons thankfully.
Sorry if this has already been asked but does a previously used Sandisk 128gb sd need to be formatted to exFAT before use or will it just work plug and play and format once connected to iTunes? Thanks!
Hey Dylan, great question. From the iFlash website they list the following: iPod 5g Video 30Gb, 60GbiPod 5.5g Video 30Gb, 80GbiPod 6g Classic 80Gb, 120Gb, 160Gb *Model limited to maximum of 128GbiPod 7g Classic 160Gb (late 2009)
Using the iFlash Quad, you could theoretically exceed a terabyte by using four 256 GB cards. Do keep in mind, though, that there is a software limitation as to how many songs you can have in your database, so you would probably only want to exceed 128GB or so if you're using lossless audio files.
I would pick "spend the money and make the product useful again". Recycling is always good in any shape or form. It's good for the planet and personal satisfaction. Acquiring more things only provides temporary joy but will eventually add more worry if the item is more superficial than useful. I find these days people need to learn to be more efficient and look towards minimalism as a way of life. People in the long run will be much happier.
I put in my iflash card but all i get is the message ok to disconnect but how can i get itunes to recognize my ipod 160 gb classic ? I cannot even get the the apple screen...
I have an ipod classic 80gb and when the charge cable is plugged in it works, but when i unplug it the screen turns black and wont operate. All the diagnostics on this video were good. Any ideas ? bad battery ?
Yes, sounds like a dead battery if it works plugged in. As long as you have it open, the iFlash conversion is easy, just be gentle when opening. xyz is the right stuff.
after i formated the sd card via itunes disc restore, how can i access the sd card via card reader? I would rather be able to write the card via usb 3.0 cardreader than ipod usb 1.0 connector to transfer 200 gb of data...
On a mac you can cmd + shift + period at the same time to show all of the hidden files on the SD card - I've got no idea if anyone has figured out how to write into those directories though and make cross loading music there possible. You might be faster to use an alternate OS like rockbox.org
I'm sure someone has managed it in the past. I'm not sure what I would use it for, but it would be a surprise if there isn't someone out there doing something cool with that idea.
@@elkidgaming Yeah, I know how that goes... Used to be, that an upgrade at the top of my tech food chain would have a trickle down effect on all the other PC equipment in the stable.... The battery life is much improved without the spinning disk. Third party batteries are always a gamble though. Even from the same supplier, I've had laptop batteries preform wildly differently, so I always order a few and compare within that group. It's not uncommon to get a bad one occasionally from any third party vendor.

I'm not associated with them & would hate to spread inaccurate info about compatibility. Thanks for watching & for the message!
Hey man I did exactly what you said but mine keeps needing resorted. And once I restore it it says iTunes has detected a device in recovery mode and needs restored again. Have I done something wrong?
Luke, that's a bummer to hear. It's really really hard for me to say if you've done something wrong if all I know is that you've done exactly what I did... Try this to get it out of recovery mode... 1- Plug the iPod which is stuck in Recovery Mode into your computer. Launch iTunes. ... 2- Unplug the iPod from your computer. Now, turn the device off. ... 3- Now, press and hold the 'Home' button. Let me know what happens.

mSata is not compatible in all iPod classics and it should clearly be said try at your own risk and if you find the $36 flash to SD expensive then how’d you get an iPod. Now if you feel special and want to re-invent the wheel and obviously know what you are doing, just be sure to share.
At the time I think I ordered what was available as there were back orders happening for some reason I can't remember now. That's how I ended up with the different colors, it was just a first available kind of thing. Thanks!
Hey Blaze, I don't do these conversions for a living or anything so I don't have enough of a data set to say what is normal, but 10 hours sounds like there is something up with the battery. I've had drastically different results with replacement batteries for all sorts of different tech, from laptops to cameras and various other gear over the years. Even the same model battery from the same seller but ordered at different times can have totally different results. I always try to buy the factory original replacement battery when possible. For projects like this where that's not available, I often order batteries from two or three different suppliers to get one that works.

I wonder if the restore shows up, then why doesn’t it restore successfully? Confuses me a lot. Please enlighten your thoughts on this. I hope we can come up with a solution. Thank you again.
How long does it take to restore the sofware to the Ipod after the upgrade. Mine seems to be taking forever.
It should only take a few moments, that could vary though depending on what your computer is doing otherwise etc.
@@DcSoundOp that's great!
They are worth repairing I never want to be without any of the many I have repaired and own and sale.😊
dude your one of the best video ive seen yet you deserve more subs holy shit
Thanks Jadan, I really appreciate the support!
Sorry if this has already been asked but does a previously used Sandisk 128gb sd need to be formatted to exFAT before use or will it just work plug and play and format once connected to iTunes? Thanks!
What is the max storage you csn achieve with the larger SD card sizes now? Can you install a 400 gb sd card?
Thanks for the tips. My old iPod might get used once more.
It's a worthwhile bit of fun, I hope you'll let us know how it goes for you!
Dill Wiggle dead battery definitely
Yes upgrade is always great especially if you love the nostalgia of the iPod classic.
why not install rockbox
Why did you use a Micro SD, with Adapter? The SD & SDHC cards have dropped in price quite a bit now. Is that a version 5 iPod?
You can also use the micro sd in your phone, for example and in your camera with the sd adapter
after i formated the sd card via itunes disc restore, how can i access the sd card via card reader? I would rather be able to write the card via usb 3.0 cardreader than ipod usb 1.0 connector to transfer 200 gb of data...
On a mac you can cmd + shift + period at the same time to show all of the hidden files on the SD card - I've got no idea if anyone has figured out how to write into those directories though and make cross loading music there possible. You might be faster to use an alternate OS like rockbox.org
Also this is a 5th gen, they have a wolfson dac which is incredible audio tech.
#rightToRepair always worth it to Keep old electronics going
Great video. Just finished with my iPod.After upgrading can the old hard drive still be used without the iPod casing ?
I'm sure someone has managed it in the past. I'm not sure what I would use it for, but it would be a surprise if there isn't someone out there doing something cool with that idea.
You can get adapters to take it to a 2.5" pinout and a 3.5" pinout, but the drives are so capacity limited that you wonder if it's worth it.
Eric Andersen I hear you but I hate to throw out tech stuff if I know it can be of some use
@@elkidgaming Yeah, I know how that goes... Used to be, that an upgrade at the top of my tech food chain would have a trickle down effect on all the other PC equipment in the stable.... At the end of the line, perhaps there was a PC that could be resurrected. My basement has aisles like a supermarket with 38 moving boxes on the floor. The smaller stuff is easier to keep.... LOL - we're tech junkies!
Great video! how's battery life compared to the regular HDD? I have an 80GB 5.5 version and i'm really looking into giving it the upgrade :)
The battery life is much improved without the spinning disk. Third party batteries are always a gamble though. Even from the same supplier, I've had laptop batteries preform wildly differently, so I always order a few and compare within that group. It's not uncommon to get a bad one occasionally from any third party vendor.
@@DcSoundOp awesome, thanks. Will try it really soon.
@@DcSoundOp I watched a video of a guy saying the battery performed less well with flash rather than HD.
This surprised me. I thought it would definitely be much more efficient.
Have there been bench tests on the two options?
Would really like to know for sure.
Can I use one of these to upgrade iPod Classic 5th Generation White (30GB) to 128GB? I'm looking at the Solo.
Hey Kev, I'd give the folks at iFlash a shout directly @ www.iflash.xyz/contact/ - they also have social media channels listed at the bottom of that page that may be quicker to get a response. I'm not associated with them & would hate to spread inaccurate info about compatibility. Thanks for watching & for the message!
Yep! Absolutely! I'm about to do so with an iPod Video 5½Gen 30GB, using the iFlash Quad adapter and a pair of 64GB microSD cards.
I think it's worth ever second, sure you lose some money but hey you get your best friend back.
Great video. Have you tried this on a 6th gen IPod classic? If so, is there a way to get around the 128gb limit?
nijawa83 yes, by installing rockbox
Witch is the max capacity can read for sd
www.iflash.xyz/store/iflash-compatibility/
Hey, whats the most memory sd that i can install on it?
Depends on which iPod you have. IIRC, the 6th and 7th gens (true "Classic" iPods) can take more than the 4th gen (iPod Photo) or 5th gen (iPod Video).
why didnt you go with the 128 gb?
great info,, I will try with my old ipod, thanks for your time
Carlos Alonso sane bro I need to get an old iPod for cheap so I can do this
I have 200+ GB on my iPhone even with music so I wouldn’t bother but just for fun, I can see the attraction.
Your video, however, made me crave for a cup of coffee!
Route 1: ZIF adapter to CF adapter to SD card = Cheap but doesn't work
Route 2: Iflash board to SD card = Expensive but works
Route 3: ZIF adapter to msata ssd = Cheap and works (msata ssd is a bit more expensive than SD cards but this route is still cheaper than #2)
That sounds cool, do you have a photo or links to what you used to make this work? Thanks for watching & for the message!
mSata is not compatible in all iPod classics and it should clearly be said try at your own risk and if you find the $36 flash to SD expensive then how’d you get an iPod. Now if you feel special and want to re-invent the wheel and obviously know what you are doing, just be sure to share.
Why not get a clear faceplate? Those look really cool!
At the time I think I ordered what was available as there were back orders happening for some reason I can't remember now. That's how I ended up with the different colors, it was just a first available kind of thing. Thanks!
What would you charge to upgrade mine?
I am just getting 10 hrs playback with new battery with iflash card on my ipod 5th gen A1136 is that normal?
Hey Blaze,
I don't do these conversions for a living or anything so I don't have enough of a data set to say what is normal, but 10 hours sounds like there is something up with the battery.
I've had drastically different results with replacement batteries for all sorts of different tech, from laptops to cameras and various other gear over the years. Even the same model battery from the same seller but ordered at different times can have totally different results.
I always try to buy the factory original replacement battery when possible. For projects like this where that's not available, I often order batteries from two or three different suppliers to get one that works.
should of bougth the 3000mah battery
I never had problem to those cheap adapter that I used with my forth ipod
That's awesome, glad to know it worked for you!
please where can i get some in kuwait?battery it shell
Great informative video, a project I'll be undertaking shortly.
I nedd a new screen and body! I need more space on my 120gb but i don't have half of that stuff on my computer to re-upload to a memory card.
The world of extracting music from an iPod can be a harsh one & Apple has not made it easy in recent years. Good luck!
@@DcSoundOp I have extracted music to a pc using iTunes and was easy enough for me. I think I used an older version of iTunes though. The newest design of iTunes is horrible anyway
@@RealDylanDouglas what version of iTunes you use?
What is the max amount of memory the Ipod will support/recognize?
going to depend on your device, but this might be helpful - www.iflash.xyz/store/iflash-compatibility/
I’m fixing up my old iPod classic 80gb 5th generation to like new $40 for parts I paid

I''ll never let the iPod Video go.... Modding one in 2021
I just looked at mine again and the battery is dead since this rebuild three years ago. I just posted on my community page here about it, will be rebuilding again soon! Good luck with yours Manuel!
Hi, nice video. You make it look very easy to do. I will try it.
How's the battery life after the mod
Hey Blaze,
The battery life is significantly improved now that the old hard drive isn't in there spinning and grinding along. I haven't done any scientific measurements, but it goes and goes and goes.
Man the thing is a beast it runs for around 30 hrs or so. it's just the beast. Wish they would make more music products by apple.
Thanks a lot, I wish I could do all that reviving, but it is a little too much for now for Venezuelans, although, I will put this video in my favorites because I will try later to get my hands on the parts, really thanks a lot!!!
I believe that the adapter was inserted upside down/backwards
It’s incredible how many people think I’d make an entire video like this and not try the adapter both ways when it didn’t work...
Spend the money. It the perfect solution to listening to your music.
6:38 you should let go of the past but not IPOD!!
i sd modded my 4th gen in a few years ago but i just dont like it as much as a hard drive without the spinning of the drive the ipod feel is gone
I know what you mean... there is something about the weight and the subtle vibration of the original drives that you don't get with the conversion. I'm glad your iPod is still alive though, have you thought of converting it back to a new old stock spinning drive? They are not super cheap, but I've seen them available for the 5th and 6th gen at least. Thanks for the message & for watching!
@@DcSoundOp not even joking later that day the IC on the board died while i was in the car 💀
Well worth the fix. Great job .
Why not use a WiFi SD card?

Have you tried the rockbox on your device?
You can use it as a hard drive also.
Right you are Ken! Thanks for watching.
Great info. Thank You
I put a Duo in and cant seem to get the life out of the original battery or even a new battery. I
'm guessing there are better, longer lasting batteries or an 850mah.
Can you suggest a battery that will power the G5 Video iPod that will solve this issue?
And how long should the battery last? All day? 3 hours? 2 days?
Much Thanks.
I do think it is worth saving the iPod.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!
tried this 3 years ago didn't work and I have it to try again heres to my luck at reassembly 3 years later lol
Oh no, I hope you are able to get it back together. Take your time and good luck!
@@DcSoundOp I remember now why I stopped my audio doesn't work I remember trying some stuff but I think I need a new head phone jack everything seems to work fine but no sound
It's worth it all the modification you can do to it now its gonna make people wont to buy them i would buy another one i still got my ipod classic
so worth it. I just did mine
I bought a iPhone to use as a dedicated music device. But Apple banned the app that allows one to use the iPhone as an iPod Classic. (rewound) It would make the front screen of any iPhone look and function like an iPod classic. But Apple killed it. I can still listen to music, but have to use the iPhone's music interface.
I want this but can you make it Bluetooth?
If you poke around on Amazon you should have no trouble finding a 30-pin Bluetooth dongle.
totally worth resurrecting!
Gotta nitpick you... the iPod you feature in this video is ~5th generation, and those things costed about $300, not $600.
