The ending was awesome. You could have edited that out but you kept it real. Thanks. Showing the relay and the wires was a big help troubleshooting my own start problems.
Thanks Nick. Very amusing, but it helped to rule out starter relay and NSS. In our case it was the actual ignition switch that was loosened by bubba for some reason.
Like many others noted, THANKS FOR THE LAUGH!! I learned what that little box is for, not even sure if my MJ 4.0 Liter has one of those..... But, I'm still in research mode for bad starter/starter not engaging flywheel scenario. I wish all life's problems were that simple. LOL
My '88 acted up exactly the same way. Mine has a 5-speed, so there's no neutral safety switch. I just need to make sure it's in neutral so it doesn't start rolling with the clutch engaged. Update: it turned out to be a loose battery cable at the starter. The nut and lock washer had worked their way loose. I put two stout lock washers and a taller flat-based nut that threads onto virtually the entire length of that cable mounting stud.
Haha I know that feeling man! Sometimes you gotta learn your own lessons haha. Glad to see it back on the road. Always learn something from ya man, keep the vids coming!
Reminds me of the time I replaced the radio antenna on my 93 XJ only to find there was a union joint behind the panel on the passenger side that had separated.
I looked down at the shifter the second time you went to start it in the video and I thought it looked like it was in reverse or drive and I was about to comment and then I decided to finish the video and once you realized that you had messed up I died laughing in my living room. Keep up the awesome videos man you have by far become my favorite Jeep RUclips channel!
LOL Your just having one of those days :-D. We all have those days but we dont film it, its brain dysfunction day. But your video isnt wasted, we had a frendly laugh and it reminds us to check the "gotcha!!" switches first. I would take the old relay to bits and give it a spring clean, a functional spare part :-)
Sounds like my day with my YJ. I still say thanks for the video. My Relay is 30 yrs old original , I think its time to do mine . I can get kicked in the butt to with mine sometimes. My I wire giving my starter only 9.5 volts right now. Still a good video man.
Hey bud dont feel too bad. Someone stole my jeep and they broke my shifter trying to get it in gear. When i got it back and replaced it my jeep suddenly didnt have park anymore but would still start. And i only had the 1-2 gear options. Every other gear was neutral =P I hooked up the shift cable but forgot to clip in the bracket that keeps tension on the cable.
What are the positive wires running to it. The green fusible link that splits off into 4 red wires is blown. When I repaired it the engine wouldn't shut off with key off. So I cut the link and everything works again... confused.
Wow the video was awesome teaching some valuable lessons about over all troubleshooting, but there is always a BUTT!!! Once that you discovered your error then you had to go into dragging our Lord And Savior into the middle of it!! Don't get me wrong dude it was done really good content in fact you were one of the few I would have subscribed to until the end of the video. If you can honestly tell me in your future videos you won't repeat that again then I will subscribe and will even get you about twenty or more other people to subscribe. Anyway loved your content you have a true talent for making a video. As always from Hillbilly Have A Happy!!!!
Hey great videos thanks for sharing. I'm helping my daughter with her 89 renix cranking no start. So far no spak no pun intended lol I test battery engine off 17 volts I test coil plug engine off 17 volts any ideas
I saw you were not in park when you first went to turn the ignition..I was yelling at you to put in park as I watched the video, just as one yells at a horror movie pending victim to not go in the basement! lol!
Hahahahah! Nice one! :D In your defense, however, I'll say that the NSS can be out of place and not allow the starter to work even when in P or N. Sometimes I have to pull the shifter just a hint to make it work. Someday I'll have to go down there, loosen the adjustment nut and move it one way or the other to make it work properly :)
So my jeep will start. But the battery loses voltage only whilenit is running. I figured jt was a faukty relay... But when i look at mine, it has orange on top, green in the middle for the starter and green at the bottom as well then the blackcand white on the ground... Would that be the issue?bworried tovchange it and fry something
@@NickInTimeFilms ive done replaced the alternator and battery. The power wire from relay the the alternator was in 3 pieces. So ive replaced that for the time being and actually order the jeep able.com wires you put on your renix.
Now the voltage for the battery aits at 11.8 when its not running and when i start it it drops down to 3 to 5 with no start and barely turning over, then will jump right back to 11.7 11.8 as soon as the load is off.
Hey dude i can use some help, i have a 88 XJ renix and it wont turn over ive tried it all, the engine is fine i hear it turn over a bit but it gives out and stalls
Hey any chance i can get some info on your alternator setup....renix should have the cs130(small case...small output)and i see you have it high mounted.
Let the search be with you... ruclips.net/video/UKI5RjTzOcg/видео.html ruclips.net/video/5Yqtwrq5GrI/видео.html It's a 170amp rewound AD244 which is the next gen of a CS144, which is the big brother of the cs130. I choose it because it was internally regulated so it was compatible with the Renix system.
I'm having a very hard time with my Jeep , it's got no dash lights, no head lights nothing except the door buzzer. What's giving me a really hard time is my Jeep body is a 94 but the motor is an 87 or so I was told when I bought it and I can't refer to my Haynes repair manual or really any particular video I have found on RUclips cuz nothing matches, It's done this three times before but started right up after I let it sit about 10 minutes and years went by before it done it again which tells me it could be a circuit breaker because on some models they reset their self. Could you please give me any advice at all on what to check and how to check it with my multimeter? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated and quickly tried.
Hmm, I'm not nearly as familiar with the HO Jeeps to know what might cause that exactly. I'd check that grounds are good, headlight switch is ok, and just general wiring issues. Does the vehicle start or do anything when the lights don't work?
I have an 86' Comanche that doesn't crank over. Someone said it's the starter. It wants to crank when I "Jump" the starter. Is it the starter, or just the relay?
Going to try replacing this. The other day it cranked and tried to start, I was like maybe I'm out of gas and my gauge is wrong. But it wasn't. Then the next day- no power to my dash at all.
Did you end up replacing this? And did it give you your power accessories back? Mine will crank but not start and i have no power in the "On/Run" position. Everything is dead.
i have a 90 xj sometimes my starter enguages will stay that way until i unhook battery seems like when i get it wet i unhook relay mess with it then its fine replaced the relay does it random any ideas?
So it still does this with a new relay? Hmm, if you've got a multimeter, I would hook it up to the sense wire on the relay and check the voltage when it starts cranking on it's own. If there is voltage on that line then it looks like something further up the chain is sticking. You could also check the sense line on the starter to see if that is getting voltage when it shouldn't. That might give you an idea of what's going on.
NickInTimeFilms yeah il be goin on a trail all of a sudden you hear the starter kicked in if I pull the green wire it stop but fuel pump is still running and louder than normal
Oh so the starter just comes on randomly throughout driving? Jesus. Does it fully engage or just spin? If pulling the green wire to the starter relay fixes it then obviously that wire is getting power when it shouldn't. Maybe something is loose under the dash then.
Hi, can l ask you if this kind of relay provide to works the fuel pump relay too? Cause my jeep stop to work, means no fuel comes from the tank. But the fuel pump relay doesn't work, l mean, it is good (l changed with mant to be sure of this) but it doesn't "click". So , l saw on the electric scheme, that from the relay you posted in this video, there's an output goin to the "ballast", So, can be this item do the problem on my jeep? Thank you so much for your help.
When you first turn the key on, the fuel pump relay turns on for 3 seconds and then shuts off. If you turn the key off and then back on, you should hear the pump run for another 3 seconds and then shut off. The Ballast Resistor is only used when the engine is running. So if the Engine starts up but then dies shortly after, it's the ballast resistor.
Yeah l know about the Ballast resistor, but the problem is that l dont have power at the fuel pump relay. I mean that l do what you just told me, and l know how it works for 3 seconds, but in my case, it doesn't work too. No click on the fuel pump relay and the relay is new. This is why l asked you is the other "big silver" realay has some connection with the fuel pump relay.
Ok , this is means that the problem is the starter relay that provide to power the fuel pump relay. Indeed, l remeber that in last 2 days when l got this problem and the jeep stop to work, l went under the hood and l "knocked" on top of the fuel pump relay and the jeep starts to work. So l thoug was that relay, but then to be sure l changed it with other same and the problems came again. Probably when l knocked on that relay l "moved" a bit the starter relay and it provided to makes works the fuel pump relay. So l think l have to change the starter relay. I notice you that in a part it works, cause the engine is rotatin but not starts cause no fuel. What a kind of "stupid" relay :-(
So that stud on the starter relay is considered the main distribution point for the positive side of the system, everything comes from there. I believe here I had 1 from the battery, 1 from the alternator, 1 to my aux fuse box, and then all the tiny factory positive feeds under that. Starter and winch pull directly from the battery though.
Man another person using dielectric grease wrong. Dielectric grease is only intended for high volt applications like spark plug boots (distributor cap), etc. It's absolutely not meant for regular 12V type connections. Dielectric means it's non-conductive, it's totally not meant for what you did. Tons of people use it for applications like that but you're really not helping yourself. Go buy electrical grease, I use Motorcraft XG-12 I picked up from the Ford dealer. It is meant for connections like you have here and doesn't interfere with the conductivity of the connections. It's also good for any other 12V wire/connector on your Jeep, I use it on ground points, etc. amzn.to/1ngDORR
+NickInTimeFilms I suppose if you want to get technical, it would be fine to use dielectric grease over the terminal stud after making a proper connection. You just don't really want to spread it on the actual connection points because it's actually hurting the transfer of electricity. I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just trying to spread the word so people (such as your subscribers) learn this. I am on lots of forums and I see people use dielectric grease all the time because it's very easy to find & buy. Electrical grease on the other hand is uncommon and many people aren't even aware of it.
