I've been working on a line that incubate, hatch and rear their own young. My star is an A&M female that, several times a year, successfully hatches out and raises her own young and to date she has never lost a chick. She's getting up in age now, and I'll be gutted when she's gone. Regarding the eggs all over the place, I try to keep only the females that lay in a nest, and cull (sell) those that tend to lay all over the place, so now most all the females I have lay in their nests. It's taken a few years of serious culling to get to this point, but it's been worth it.
+Regency Lass Well done and congratulations on your persistence! I know some quail breeders who are very particular about studying breeding traits and genetics etc. There's a breeder in my local area who breeds colossal quail through selection of larger birds and I imagine it does take a lot of effort to get these traits but as you say totally worth it! Cheers :)
Out of curiosity, do you still have these quail? Are they getting better at rearing young? What kind of enclosure do they have? Lastly, do you ever sell chicks or hatching eggs from this stock? :p

Hello from Tennessee, USA. My kids and I really enjoy your videos. They are very helpful. We used your pickled egg recipe for our quail eggs. they came out wonderful! To make the shells come off very easily. Steam the eggs for 6 minutes, then put them in ice water until cool. I steam chicken eggs as well. 15 minutes does the trick!
Just found your channel while looking for info on keeping quail. I’m planning to start keeping quail myself. Love the channel. Thanks for sharing all your wealth of experience. Regards. Mags
Thanks for the video I will be buying 2 female quails in about a months time as I'm not going to be breeding, and I have been watching heaps of videos but this is the best about their eggs, thanks :)
Thank you. I have never had quail. I had no clue, about most of the things you said. I bet they would not be here today, if not for incubation. Do they just not sit long enough?
+TheEmptynester Yes that's correct, quail just don't usually sit at all and when they do it's not very consistent so artificial incubation is a better way to go. Thanks :)
You will be able to tell by this question that I am just starting out with a very small population of quail, 1 male and 2 female. I get two eggs every day and my question is, how long can they stay in the cage before collection, and still be good? What is the best way to store them after collections? How long will they last if stored correctly? Thanks!
Oooh look at all those gorgeous eggs! I'm so jealous. For now our quail are still in the garage until we can get the outdoor pen built in the back. They have a heat lamp, but have stopped laying eggs. :-( I miss going in, and finding eggs.
+Hansen Homestead Yes my quail stop laying in winter also (even though our winters are very mild) but it's the shorter daylight hours that actually trigger the slow down. I know some quail breeders who keep a light on and this tricks the quail into laying all year but I prefer to let the bids have their natural rest (as nature intended) because I believe it's better for them to recuperate. Good luck with your quail pen build! Cheers :)
Hi SSM, I am not made on quail to eat because there just is not much on them, but I tried the eggs, soft cooked in a little salad many years ago and since then have been trying to get some, but cooking soft boiled quail eggs needs a ‘touch’ I don’t have! Interesting video, thank you.
+mrbluenun Hi and thank you! There's an interesting bit of trivia about quail meat regarding the protein density - it's actually more dense than beef and apparently that's why people don't need as much quail meat to feel the same fullness as eating more beef. Personally, 1 x quail at dinner is enough for me. Yes the eggs are tricky to get soft perhaps poaching them might be easier but I haven't tried that. Cheers :)
+Self Sufficient Me Hi, I had never thought of poaching, so that might be the way to go, thank you. I have to find another supplier because the quail reared by the company, for a big shopping chain, tasted too fishy, and I did eat them fresh. Some tasted just like duck eegs from the feed the mum was fed you know. There is a lot of farmers markets round here so maybe thats where I should look?
+mrbluenun Tasting fishing is definitely not right - yes it's probably something to do with the feed. Quail do taste stronger than chickens but the taste difference isn't too large in my opinion. I do think they taste better if allowed to get some exercise like in a large pen unfortunately many commercial quail farms keep them in tiny cages.
+Clorofila Verde Hi Marcelo and thanks mate! Yes quail are definately a great little bird to keep and I'm glad you're enjoying it. Hugs back! Cheers :)

Hey mate, good vid. Just one thing, in my experience feeding chooks eggs teaches them to eat their own. I'm even hesitant to cook them first and disguise them as once they get a taste for egg they eat their own forever.
Ok so if quails are laying eggs how often check for eggs 🥚 how long do eggs last for eating and how fast do you get them into incubator for hatching? I’m trying to learn more abt these birds. Thanks!
thanks Mark.... I did separete her from the other ones. should I try to give her some fertilized eggs and see what happens ? I am new with quails, I have them only few months and learning things everyday. also. I keep all my quails in a big cage. do you have any tips to trim beaks and nails ?
+ATW6 WONDERS No worries... You could try giving her some fertilised eggs although I have a feeling she might not take to them but it won't hurt to try at least because if you do have that magic quail that actually is a sitter then it could be worth it. With regards to trimming beaks and nails, I don't do either because I don't find it necessary at all and since you also have a large pen like mine your quail should have plenty of room to stay out of each other's way. You will see the odd disturbance over territory but rarely will quail kept in large enclosures injure each other - that's the beauty of quail pens as opposed to small cages. Cheers :)
I have a quick question. I just started raising quail. The first few days we had eggs now nothing. What am I doing wrong? They are in a rabbit hutch right now. We have 1 male 6 females.
Where abouts are you if you are approaching winter it's natural for quail to stop laying but if you are now coming into summer then there could be several reasons why they have stopped such as: they are still young birds - if so, they often will lay irregularly until they get to about 9 weeks or more; if they are new to their location or get a fright quail can "go off the lay" for awhile sometimes a few weeks; if they are not getting enough nutrition they can can stop but that's usually not a problem if you are feeding the birds a proper game bird feed. I would say give them some time and they'll start laying eggs again because often it's nothing to worry about. :)
They are nice looking eggs Mark. I am going to suggest to my friend down the road to get some quail so I go over and check them out. Eating quail do they taste like chicken? )
+wildchook (Mary) Thanks Mary! Quail taste more like duck than chicken although the Texas A&M (white ones) actually have a whiter meat similar to chickens and do taste closer to chicken than other varieties of quail. They are a hit at BBQs at our place every time and are especially good wok fried in pieces. Cheers :)
Surprised to see one of my videos pop up next to yours. I'm still waiting to get my first egg. Now you will have to give us a video of how you use them. If I ever get eggs I want one of those asian frying pans with the individual cup section for each egg. There is also a video of one of those next to your video.
+Dale Calder Yeah Dale and I've seen some odd Asian way of frying the quail eggs on a hot plate video also next to mine in the listing by busting the egg yolk and using it as a wrap - interesting! We generally hard boil and then pickle our quail eggs for parties etc but for everyday eating I do prefer chicken eggs personally (they're bigger and taste better - I reckon). Cheers :)
+Chicken Hobby Farm They're not bad pickled and a pretty nice as a top garnish poached for Asian soups but personally I'm not a big fan of the rich taste when fried like a chicken egg (I prefer fried chicken eggs). I sometimes throw the eggs to my hens as a treat they love'em! Cheers :)
Hi Danny and thanks mate - I'm pretty open about what I do and I try to be as natural as possible on my channel so people can get to know me (natural doesn't necessarily mean good though... but I'm always trying to improve my amateur videos). Our acreage is just 45kms north of Brisbane. Cheers :)
+Lulu Barretta These type of quail were kept by humans before chickens and that's why they are sometimes called pharaoh quail because the ancient Egyptians kept them. They are common in Asia, not so common in Australia, but quail keeping in the USA is a pretty big industry! They are great egg layers and can be kept easier than chickens due to their size. :)
I have Button Quail, and my female has laid 7 eggs in about a week. Of course she completely ignores them but I'm willing to incubate them myself, so my question is: How long can the eggs be left unattended after being laid before they aren't viable? I was hoping to leave them in there in case she changes her mind if she lays enough eggs, but you know...
I wouldn't leave them for more than 10 days before incubation because after that viability becomes an issue. Also, store the eggs in a stable environment away from too hot or cold temperatures (ideally about 15 degrees Celsius) but I don't worry too much about exact temp and just store/collect ours in my study (which is usually at around a stable 20 C) until I have enough to incubate. Best of luck! :)
+MsTokies No that's several days... But, quail do lay every day mostly! I was just lazy not to collect them each day LOL - I do collect daily when I'm looking to incubate eggs though. Cheers :)
hey mark I'm not getting any quail eggs and I don't know why I live in caboolture QLD Australia and don't know what's going on in doing everything correct
d dogg We're coming into winter now and quail usually stop laying until September unless extra light is provided to extend the "daylight" hours, which I personally wouldn't recommend to do anyway. Coincidentally, I actually intended filming a video on this very subject tomorrow... I will release it by Friday so stay tuned! :)
thank you very much mark I thought that was the case but I thought I'd just ask anyway. I've only got 12 quail I had 13 last week but one suddenly passed away. can't wait to get some eggs to incubate
+d dogg No worries! Btw, it's quite normal to lose the odd quail or two they're a small bird and whilst a hardy breed they are prone to die suddenly for no particular reason. Cheers :)
Some eggs can look chalky it is sometimes a lack of calcium but usually it's a random abnormality and normal. Yes these eggs can be incubated as they are fertile. Cheers :)
+DCSOCCER Skills Here in Oz a 20kg bag of quail feed costs around $21 (AU) but another name for it is "Game Bird Feed" in the US I've seen it here bit.ly/1OAdtdY on eBay. Cheers :)
They're difficult to tell apart but usually the males are smaller/leaner. The only real way is to tip them upside down and check to see the genitalia if it's a vent (female) or a lump (male). Cheers :)
Hi, I know I probably won't get an answer from the owner of this channel but my quail are about 9 weeks old and I have two hens and a rooster but mine won't lay idk why can anyone give me a suggestion on how to fix this or help them lay?
+Maxo Mizell Sometimes quail take longer than the expected 6-8 weeks before they start laying. Also, quail lay according to daylight hours and will stop laying during winter (usually about 3 months) when the daylight is shorter. Quail generally lay eggs best in spring/summer and after 3 months of age. Hope this helps :)
Self Sufficient Me dude thank you so.much I didn't think I would get a response this fast or let alone at all😂 but anyways thanks dude love your channel keep it up
+Farhan Kurdi They should start laying soon but depending on your season you might have to wait until spring. Quail usually start laying after 6 weeks but egg laying is also seasonal regulated by daylight hours not temperature so when the days are short in winter they don't normally lay unless given artificial light. :)
I have a female quail that is trying to collect eggs and seat on.....she is being kind bully with the other one. can you make maybe a video if you have any info about it please?
+ATW6 WONDERS Hi, yes it's quite common for quail to bully each other and chase away birds in their territory. This is another reason why it's hard for quail hens to sit long enough on their eggs to facilitate hatching. You could try isolating the broody hen with her eggs in a separate cage (this method can work for chickens) but it may not work as well for quail as the move might upset the hen and she could stop sitting anyway... Perhaps you could move the bully bird for the time being and see if that helps? Cheers :)
+Self Sufficient Me my female quail us doing much better now. I had her separated with a divider in the cage, few days later put her back and the bulling stopped her now. thank you 🐧🐧
I dont know where you get youre sources but quail remain activly in the wilds all the way from russia to Madagascar. Quail dont lay on the eggs because they dont have a specific breeding patern as wild quail migrate. Its not because of imbreeding. Most of the quail song birds were wipped out in world war two and used what remained to rebuild the quail industry. Best way to keep you quail from imbreeding buy them from seprate parts of the country. Mine come from texas and Pennsylvania
You can incubat and eat dirty eggs. Wash em if you eat them and put them in the fridge. If you incubate tgem and they arnt too dirt dont wash em leave em dirty the bloom will protect the eggs they can be left to turn for a maximum of two weeks before incubator the sooner the better though. Store hatching eggs at room temp in a turner it turn them by hand making sure the point remains down.
I've been working on a line that incubate, hatch and rear their own young. My star is an A&M female that, several times a year, successfully hatches out and raises her own young and to date she has never lost a chick. Hi SSM,
I am not made on quail to eat because there just is not much on them, but I tried the eggs, soft cooked in a little salad many years ago and since then have been trying to get some, but cooking soft boiled quail eggs needs a ‘touch’ I don’t have!
Cheers :)
+Self Sufficient Me Hi,
I had never thought of poaching, so that might be the way to go, thank you. +mrbluenun Tasting fishing is definitely not right - yes it's probably something to do with the feed. Quail do taste stronger than chickens but the taste difference isn't too large in my opinion. I do think they taste better if allowed to get some exercise like in a large pen unfortunately many commercial quail farms keep them in tiny cages.
congrats ! I really enjoyed your videos mate ! I´m keeping some quails at home and I love it ! hugs from Brazil ( Marcelo Quintiliano)..see yah

What cause the eggs to be chalky and what can I do to stop it if possible?
I have a male and a female quail. She has laid eggs but when would you recommend for me ta remove the eggs for consumption? Thanks
Sharon Henry you can remove the eggs immediately for eating - it's best they are removed ASAP after laying to limit spoilage.
hi there, i was wondering how do you know if the egg has been fertilised or not? thank you :)
annstan606 If there is a male in the group you can usually assume they are fertilized
When you fed the chicken quail eggs I was like 😧 had no idea
Why do you keep quails? Is that more common in Australia? I'm from the US.
How do they survive in the wild if they don't sit on their eggs?

Coincidentally, I actually intended filming a video on this very subject tomorrow... I will release it by Friday so stay tuned! :)
thank you very much mark I thought that was the case but I thought I'd just ask anyway. I've only got 12 quail I had 13 last week but one suddenly passed away. can't wait to get some eggs to incubate
+d dogg No worries! Btw, it's quite normal to lose the odd quail or two they're a small bird and whilst a hardy breed they are prone to die suddenly for no particular reason. Cheers :)
that's good to know I seen you mentioned that your about 40 mind out of Brisbane. I'd love to come check out your setup
Can you please do a video on where you can find quail eggs.🤗Such as in nests
Do you mean in the wild or in the pen?

how many eggs can a quep can germinate at a time
what's the chalky stuff on the egg. can is egg be incubated?
Some eggs can look chalky it is sometimes a lack of calcium but usually it's a random abnormality and normal. Yes these eggs can be incubated as they are fertile. Cheers :)
Thanks mate.
thanks soo much for the video

how much does quail food cost and what website can u order quail food from
+DCSOCCER Skills Here in Oz a 20kg bag of quail feed costs around $21 (AU) but another name for it is "Game Bird Feed" in the US I've seen it here bit.ly/1OAdtdY on eBay. Cheers :)
How to know white quail male and female??
They're difficult to tell apart but usually the males are smaller/leaner. The only real way is to tip them upside down and check to see the genitalia if it's a vent (female) or a lump (male). Cheers :)
How many quail ps do u have
I didn't watch it all but it's good
Hi, I know I probably won't get an answer from the owner of this channel but my quail are about 9 weeks old and I have two hens and a rooster but mine won't lay idk why can anyone give me a suggestion on how to fix this or help them lay?
+Maxo Mizell Sometimes quail take longer than the expected 6-8 weeks before they start laying. Also, quail lay according to daylight hours and will stop laying during winter (usually about 3 months) when the daylight is shorter. Quail generally lay eggs best in spring/summer and after 3 months of age. Hope this helps :)
Self Sufficient Me dude thank you so.much I didn't think I would get a response this fast or let alone at all😂 but anyways thanks dude love your channel keep it up
How many quail do you have in that cage
It varies but it can hold up to 100 pretty comfortably, however, most of the time there are around 25 or less.
Self Sufficient Me okay
Great video!😃😃....But my quails isn't laying eggs!!😭😭
Thank you! Give them time they'll eventually lay :)

Chickens will become egg eaters
nice video
Hi I have 4 quail 3 months old not laying eggs yet when they will start laying anyone can tell me plz...
+Farhan Kurdi They should start laying soon but depending on your season you might have to wait until spring. Quail usually start laying after 6 weeks but egg laying is also seasonal regulated by daylight hours not temperature so when the days are short in winter they don't normally lay unless given artificial light. :)
Mine always lay their eggs in a hole they made in the hay
You have well-trained quail! Cheers :)
I do give quail egg shells to my pigeons love from egypt
Unrelated but Egyptian food is the best
Thanks..
My quail sit on there eggs forever! she sat on them eggs for like 2 months! never hatched though
Oh really! Yes I've seen the odd bird of mine still on the eggs but it's never successful... Cheers :)
can you raise quails in colder places like Canada?
Hmmm I don't know im from Alabama so im not to sure if you have a heat lamp and a heated barn im sure you could
I hear that you can keep a few indoors in the winter then let them out in the summer
You can yes. Many people keep them as pets in cages. :)
my white quail is just lay 1 egg why
There could be many reasons why quail will stop laying such as time of year, feed, and other factors.
I have batair but he was not given egg

I had her separated with a divider in the cage, few days later put her back and the bulling stopped her now. thank you 🐧🐧
ATW6 WONDERS That's great to hear! Thanks for letting me know. Cheers :)
is that male and female in the cage
That was a male (the white one?) cheers :)
When I go to collect quail eggs my dogs r always waiting for a treat they love them raw

Spotted Eggs.
Quails do u have
+Lanster 2015 I have about 20 at the moment but I sometimes grow 3 times this amount. Cheers :)
And they lay very blue eggs
Great video, but I wouldn't feed the quail their own eggs
Thank you!
Kristen Gibson its okay to feed them eggs. They like the shell.
Store hatching eggs at room temp in a turner it turn them by hand making sure the point remains down.
my quail break eggs all the time. the can peck right into them
I have two male female and they lay 13 eggs per month
When my chikens try quail eggs, they start eating own eggs :/
Too much calcium in your chickens will yield armoured eggs. Our Rhode Island Reds laid some near rocks for a couple days.... 😝
+Ken Lee Thanks Ken, never seen it personally but I will look out for it! Cheers :)
Nice video, but not good idea feeding with broken egg!
Ok thank you! :)
