I'm using zip ties also. I find that if you make them into a ring first (then you can keep them on a pinky finger), they are easier to get on the quail.
I’ve been watching a lot of videos on poultry and your set up is really ‘happy’ looking, I like it. Also this playlist is my Quail bible. I’m hopefully getting mine in a month or so, probably going to hatch out as have ordered an incubator. I’d love to see how they sleep 🧐 no one has done a video of their birds at night. Idea for a video, stick a camera in the duck, chicken and quail sleeping areas, and one outside and let’s see what they get up to 🤓
Hi Mark. Rooks took my last 3 female quail from the cage, despite me putting 1cm mess all around the cages. I'm heart broken. Fortunately I'd just ordered an incubator and had about a dozen eggs in reserve. So now I'm waiting to see if any will hatch. Should I keep them indoors if I get any chicks?, I mean at the same age as these in the video. I'm scared to loose more to rooks. I'm in the UK. I could build an aviary. What mesh would you recommend? I'm thinking of 6ft high, 6ft long and 3ft wide. I'm hoping to keep 2 males and 8 females. How do I keep foxes abd rats out?
I'm starting to learn about raising quail so I do appreciate your videos! I like the way your birds have room to get around and scratch and taking dust baths, etc.. Your birds are fully feathered out and remain mostly calm when you go into the enclosure. Seems like the better way to go if a person has the room?
Because of your quail videos i got very interested. I later got myself a pen and 4 quails. I live in Sweden and it's snowy outside so at the moment I don't get any eggs. You have really gotten me into self sufficiency and I plan to live a similar life to yours. Thanks a lot Mark.
That's great to hear and I'm glad I may have inspired you to dabble more into self-sufficiency! Remember, you don't have to be totally self-sufficient in everything just try to become self-sufficient in something... Well, that's what I like to say LOL, cheers :)
I am finishing up a hatch. Over half of them hatched which surprised me. I think I'm going to keep each hatching of chicks separate so i can easily remember who is older and who is not. I'm thinking i will be hatching 2 or 3 times a year and will cull my oldest ones for meat. That way i keep a good fertility rate up in my flock.
When I was in Cambodia, little kids go around to all of the beer gardens and sell pouches of quail eggs with salt as a snack with beer. They were wonderful that way, dipped in salt.
Thanks Owen, yes we do sometimes eat the eggs and make cute quail egg snacks etc but to be honest we still prefer chicken eggs over quail or duck. Cheers :)
I know this is random but your video about 5 tips how to grow a lot of lemons has really helped my Meyer lemon tree tremendously! Thanks Mark for the great vids. I subscribed months ago, so that's checked. I'm now going back and watching and liking every one of your videos. Keep em coming. :) Could you possibly do a video on beekeeping? Do you still have the bees, and olive tree care? Maybe how to press the oil from the olives? :)
Hi. Nice video. I am thinking of starting my quial hatching soon. I have some questions. I was wondering at what temperature should I keep my quials in once they are in their brooder. And how many eggs do you think will fit in my 10 egg chicken incubator since quail eggs are smaller. And what do i need for their brooding box. Thankyou and keep up the good work.
Thank you Kyle, I'm glad you liked this video (I felt it may have been a little long and disjointed) plus I had some sound issues, but your positive feedback really encourages me to make more content. Cheers :)
Mark, hello I am in South Africa I have an outside aviary it is quite big I have a few doves in it, can I put 2 types of quails at the bottom, california and coturnix?
hi Mark I really like your videos I've got quails too. I suppose to have three but two got killed probably rats. I only got one female left. I probably getting more soon!
I keep my qail in the green house, it is hard to keep them from eating my tomatoes but it works with heay pruning! And the bird are safe from predators! They have a deep bedding to
I have a flock of my own started for eggs and meat. Do you combine the birds you eat and your breeding stock in the same pen? Or do you have a separate pen for them?
You could make a nice one out of shelving units and cage/welded wire. I made a 4 tier set up along the lines of what another channel made. Look up the Larochelle farm here on yt
Hi Mark LTNS my quail are doing great, I have about 55 now. Moving to a new farm and building pens now for chickens and quail. For now the quail are on wire but soon will have a large run.I'm thinking of putting 1/4 inch wire on bottom even though it will be on the ground, but to try to keep snakes and rodents out and still mulch on top to encourage bugs and allow them to scratch. I do a little different in that I sell most my chicks. I began culling as well keeping only birds that have reached mature weight of above 9 oz at 10 weeks old trying to increase the size on my breeding stock and live up to that 10 oz Texas A&M are suppose to do. Do you have wire on the bottom of your run?
Hi, great to hear from you and well done on your quail keeping. Firstly, I'm glad you are wanting to build a quail run on the ground because it really is a humane way to keep them plus I find it easier to do than in raised cages anyway. To answer you question, no I don't have wire on the floor of the run but I have dug the mesh walls down about a foot around the whole pen to act as a barrier to predators and to stop rodents tunnelling under. I'm going to answer your question and others in a video I'm preparing today (hopefully will release within the next 24 hrs). Cheers :)
Are you saying you took them from the hatcher and put them in this cage, and 4 weeks later, they were ready to go outside? So the quail you are marking is only 4 weeks old?
Yes sure! My position is "homedad" I've looked after my two boys full time since 2008 whilst my wife has pursued her professional career. I decided to make use of our small property to grow food as a way to eat healthier and save money on buying groceries. It was challenging at first to establish a productive food garden, but after a few years I found growing our own food to be pretty easy and very productive. In a way, I'm working at home for myself and family by producing food instead of earning a wage working for someone else. Nothing is for free LOL
Self Sufficient Me that's awesome. I believe there's a sense of freedom and peace workin with nature and nature never fails to reward us in abundance. Your fruit trees are awesome. Enjoy your hard labour and thank you for sharin with us what you've got. Cheers :)
.question: this am, after introducing 1 1/2 yr old quail (2 male 4 female) into a large caged environment with 8-wk old quail, I awoke to find 5 dead quail in the pen. after reviewing the enclosure, there was no visible access by a preditor. can quail kill each other???? thanks, Steve

they can peck each other, sure, but they can also pass on sicknesses. it's always a smart idea to keep new animals in quarantine to observe and perhaps treat.
Sir, my quail chicks peck at each other pull out their hairs.. I was suggested to tie some veggies or greens.. But the habit hasn't stopped now to the extreme they peck at the back make other birds bleed, worried about the mortality kindly suggest an ifea
Where i live it wouldn't be good to keep them on the ground. We get too many flooding rains and are full to the brim with small snakes. So it will be better for me to keep them in cages. But i agree they are a ground bird that needs and loves to scratch and dust bathe. So keep them happy and put them in a large sand bath. And i can really make them happy by putting in some meal worms in the sand box
No predators have ever breached my quail pen but I have seen snakes, hawks, owls, and rats (of course) trying to get in through the wire - denied!!! LOL Cheers :)
We release some too, but the fire ants got the young chicks when hatching. Now there none : ( no where! Dang Bobwhites Quail eat like a turkey does he heee Blue Quail eats less, and a little bigger bird. Pheasants hardly eats any thing. They love field mice, lizards, ants, crickets ect. thanks for sharing cheers
ours have a sand bath with fan filter for dust, they run the house during the day and sleep in the cage at night. some times the stand at the door and want back in the cage haha. they put themselves to bed hahah 2 males brothers no girls to fight over. Old One Legged Joseph T.
What looks like merely play on a micro scale can give you valuable knowledge and experience of how to be self sufficient on a massive scale.. Do you remember that child like feeling of excitement and wonder you had with life when you were too young to have an awareness of money, personal gain, women or responsibility? From that position you engaged with reality in a totally different way to the way you have become accustomed to today through the conditioning of societal pressures, In that state of mind your brain is like a sponge, you learnt without even trying purely because life was fun.. This approach is called targeted education,,,,, Lots of bricks of knowledge that fit together to build a house of advanced intelligence. QUAILS ARE PROPER CUTE!!! lmfao,,,,🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣..My precious ideasses!!! lol
I first guess You relase then into the nature, when I do that here in Germany they can fly to Africa in the winter, or the next cat is eating them, or they come back.
why you don't eat the quails eggs they much healthier for you then chicken eggs , We crack 24 eggs each morning to a bowl and then fry them, they are delicious
Hey Einstein, you're not supposed to hold a quail upside down by their feet / legs. I wonder how many you've hurt without even realizing it? Also, you should prepare the zip ties in advance. Get some kind of table to tag the birds!
Your videos are always very easy to watch and informative as well. Thanks for posting!
Have you considered assembling the leg band loops in advance so you can just put the loop over a foot and then tighten down to the size you want?
Im new to quail and very excited to see my quail grow. They are 2 weeks old today and already trying to fly inside of their brooder box.
Awesome video, Mark! The wife and I are definitely going to revamp the way we do quail now! Also, that music right around 11 min is excellent.

I just ordered the Borotto incubator from your other episode. Super excited to get it tomorrow!!

Hi, I was thinking of getting bird rings for the quails legs So your zip tie idea was great cheap idea Thank you
Post edits and voice overs often improve videos. Your videos are always interesting and informative. Thank you.

Onya robbo
I put some turmeric in the water, it has worked for me to prevent illnesses, in quail chicks.
My grandmother owned chickens and she told me about this trick
Love your videos Mark!

is inbreeding something one would need to worry about by adding offspring back to the same area as their parents?
Yeah

or raw on ramen with roasted pork
another great video, thanks Mark
do you use the quail eggs in the kitchen?
Thanks Owen, yes we do sometimes eat the eggs and make cute quail egg snacks etc but to be honest we still prefer chicken eggs over quail or duck. Cheers :)

Hi...... Mark, thank you for sharing your video 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 🎥👍👍👍
Hi Mark, I really like the double-storey standing cage which you used as brooder. Could you advise where can I find the same type please? Cheers
You could make a nice one out of shelving units and cage/welded wire. I made a 4 tier set up along the lines of what another channel made. Look up the Larochelle farm here on yt

when does the marking start to show up on the quail?
Tip for zip tie cutting. A small, curved cat claw clipper works beautifully and then nothing else gets nipped.
Hi. what kind of nibbles do you use for the drinkers
Thinking of doing some Quail this year I may have a few questions for ya, they look good, I like to give the yardbirds plenty of room
Yes no worries I'm happy to answer any quail questions as best I can for ya. Cheers :)
thanks. do you have to use an incubator or can quail hatch their own eggs like chooks? trying to catch up on all your videos lol
6:55 That quail was about to book it XD
Are you saying you took them from the hatcher and put them in this cage, and 4 weeks later, they were ready to go outside? So the quail you are marking is only 4 weeks old?
The music goes crazy🕺🔥🕺🔥🕺🔥🕺
Beautiful birds
Hi can I ask if you're a full time homesteader?
Yes sure! My position is "homedad" I've looked after my two boys full time since 2008 whilst my wife has pursued her professional career. With such a big land I was wondering the same. One day I'll love to have a big yard and plant all my stuff :D
PD: Thanks for the inspiration Mark.
Where'd you get the transport cage. Please respond im a huge fan!
Most pet stores sell them - it is actually a cat or small dog carrier. Thank you! :)
What kind of cage is this brooder you're taking them out of? I'd love to find one like it
It's big bird cage or a ferret cage
.question:

they can peck each other, sure, but they can also pass on sicknesses. it's always a smart idea to keep new animals in quarantine to observe and perhaps treat.
I will be keeping my birds in cages above ground but they will have a fully closed in dust bath/ sand box.
dust baths help keep body lice down/away
add a bit of food grade diatemaceous earth , works great
Do quail go broody and hatch out their own eggs?
Great video.
Thanks Oscar! :)

No predators have ever breached my quail pen but I have seen snakes, hawks, owls, and rats (of course) trying to get in through the wire - denied!!! LOL Cheers :)
Do qails pair up like pigeons and stay faithful to their pairs?
Unique

Good stuff
What do you do when your quail has a droopy wing ?
Thanks mate!
Thanks Andy! :)
I'm sorry to hear about the mysterious illness. I hope your population bounces back. :(
Not sure if it was an illness or just a freak mass death from the big storm - probably was the latter... It should be ok thanks :)
I guess if You stop eating chicken from the supermarket they will be healthy in the future
Females always have spots on their bellies? Or how else do you tell the male from the female?
Nice brother
I was wondering how you knew which birds where which.
good video have a great day
Thanks, and you have a great day also! :)
salut c,est manifique the bird quail other to passion meaney work picock formidable thx for every nice thing u continue

WBLMB WBLMB Yeah but with chicken eggs you just need about six for a family rather than 24
3:46 to tight my man
HAHA Look at your fuzzy hair lol now your bald like me HAHA
Lol.
Why not to release them like the chicken?
Because they fly away and never come back.
