i almost always pulse the retrieve on the sp every few seconds and particularly as i enter and exit what i know will be the strike zone. they're fairly dynamic plugs and particularly in current you will be shocked at how wide they will swim if you pulse them and give them time to go out to one side. then they'll dart back quickly to compensate. they will also dive on the pulse, or in some cases even rise depending on your rod angle and the amount of current and tension. my rule of thumb is that all sp minnows are sinking plugs. you will need to beef up the splits and the hooks and invariably you will go beyond the threshold of buoyancy and the plug will sink. "floating" sps become slow sinking, "sinking" become a slightly faster sinking, deeper diving plug. but make no mistake, these are surface plugs designed to get strikes from fish who are feeding in the top 3-4 feet of the water column and hiding beneath in the boulders. ideally you are working your plugs right over the top of structure and in current where the plug will start to do its dance and get off that steady centerline wobble. they are generally the first plug out of my bag at night. they absolutely crush.

Well also it could be the right speed depending on your gear ratio

I’m used to fishing fast lures for black bass (largemouth mostly)so I have to be mindful when switching lures and targeting different fish of how fast to reel.
Im new to fishing an sp minnow so I might been fishing it too fast. I use a theory with a gear ratio 5.7:1 with 38 inches per turn

Bone on a dark night? 🤔 Do you usually use bone at night? Do you find the darker colors work at night better?

Why would they be on bottom at night?Water still to cold at that time for surface activity?

So you could fish striped bass at night ? Was the lure glow in the dark

I haven’t striper fished during the day in years. Big fish feed better at night, and no they don’t need a glowing lure to find it.

If I’m fishing from surf, 18inch to 24 inch. If I’m fishing from a jetty or boat, a little longer so I can grab swivel to help myself land the fish easier
