    7:13 It's always fun to pick up on the scenes where the "Marvel method" gets a little broken. Kirby has Hulk hiding in a circus; green, big, huge and dressed in full clown makeup and it's up to Stan to "explain" it. The second meeting with the story art already outlined: "Jack, he's not disguised, it's just the Hulk in clown makeup. Fine, keep it in, it's a good image with the juggling.... I got it, he's pretending to be a robot the ringmaster just happened to find. I'm such a genius."
    Let's be fair; Sometimes it's not always Stan Lee's fault.

    Something I always find interesting about long-running comics universes, like at Marvel and DC, is how characters change in their depiction and portrayal over time. Like, I really like Janet Van Dyne/The Wasp, but sometimes these old, early stories just make me cringe. It really shows how we like to imagine that these things all came fully-formed from the Ideal Plane, when really they've always been works in progress. That can be kind-of reassuring for me, from a certain point of view!

    Someone at the circus could have been in on the Hulk's deception - possibly the owner. Hulk could have come to them and made a deal be a star attraction and get the audiences in as a quid pro quo for hiding him. His collaborator helped disguise him and just told the rest of the circus employees that they'd obtained a robot that would really pack in the crowds.

    The guys at Marvel just didn't have a clue how to handle female characters in the early 60s, did they? The Wasp named the team and wasn't even credited on the cover. And at what point did she change from the empty-headed borderline nymphomaniac of the early years, to the tough-as-nails alpha female that she was in "Under Siege"? Maybe the subject of a future video?

      @kaleremmers5095 3 года назад +16

      Chris Claremont (who is famous for bumping up the power and prominence of female characters such as turning Carol Danvers into Binary) wrote two issues of Marvel Team-Up in 1977 (59 and 60) wherein the Wasp receives a power upgrade from Hank Pym that made her an actual threat (she was pretty much just an annoyance before, if she was allowed to do anything). Then after her divorce from Hank Pym, Wasp took over as leader of the Avengers (in 1981/82 iirc) and became pretty badass, though her success as a leader is debated somewhat (She had to deal with a LOT of strong personalities as leader such as Hercules and Namor). In the 1990s she kinda returned to her more flighty self in West Coast Avengers (She also not so coincidentally reunited with Hank Pym, who was a member of that team) though she was still a force to be reckoned with. Her personality has flip flopped between those two characterizations ever since. I think it really depends on whose writing her, how much they like her, and how involved with Hank she is.

His behaviour is very dependant on how much the writer likes him and he jumps back and forth from a competent scientist hero who had to reckon with his past or an emotionally unhinged man who's just as likely to cause terrible problems as he is to try and fix them. In some runs he's one of my favourite heros and sometimes it feels like the writers are short on ideas and went, "Well maybe Hank's crazy again."

    One of the legends of how the Avengers were created was that Daredevil was taking forever to get off the ground (Something about Bill Everett having drinking problems), and so had to whip out something off the fly, and a "Justice League, but not really" was the best they could think of on short notice. And now it is the biggest pop culture thing of that past ten years. Because Daredevil needed more lead time.

    The story goes that Bill Everett was very late completing the art for a new character that Stan had thought up, Daredevil. To fill this hole in the production schedule, Stan and Jack come up with The Avengers, using characters they have already introduced in the anthology titles and The Hulk whose own title had ended earlier. This need to quickly come up with a replacement title could account for the rocky story line and some plot holes in this first issue.

    That outfit reveals what a lucky husband you have!
    When I was a kid, I had a mind to save up the $400 Overstreet said Avengers #1 was in Good. I didn't end up doing this nor know where to buy one. I just assumed my local comic shop had one behind the counter where they kept the valuable stuff that they let you go through only under supervision, which back then didn't take that much, I bought my Man-Thing #1 and Amazing Spider-Man #102 from those behind the counter bins for $6 apiece, which was a lot for a comic back in the '80s.
    When I read the Marvel Masterworks volume for free from the public library, I thought I really dodged a bullet by leaving it to wealthy collectors. It was corny and didn't really get good until Roy Thomas started on it with things like Henry Pym not being able to return to normal size or die of shock.

I think that makes him the only founding member who never did. As far as Hulk passing as a robot, I think he got another member of the Teen Brigade to claim to be the one controlling him via their short wave radio set up- sounds logical in an early '60's way of thinking.

But no one but Scott and Hank are aware that Hank has passed on the Ant-Man identity to a new guy. So when Ant-Man AND Yellow jacket show up together, The Beast says, "ANT-MAN AND YELLOW JACKET IN THE SAME PLACE AND AT THE SAME TIME?? THAT'S FREAKY!!"

    About lead-lined tanks. One time I had a strange dream where the Savage Dragon had to keep Marvel Comics' Enchantress from getting involved in some fight or other - for her own safety as much as anything - so he put her in a locked room where every single material was made of plastic and other "unnatural" materials. Dragon's line of thinking was, he probably couldn't hold the Enchantress forever no matter what he did, but if he gave her access only to materials that didn't exist in the Viking Age, it would take her a while to figure out how to use them in magic. Even the only beverage he left her was diet soda.

      @@harlannguyen4048 I dream in comics sometimes. Sometimes I dream entire comics, other times it's just a scene or a setup. Personally I think my subconscious got kind of clever with this one, that you could at least slow the Enchantress down by forcing her to deal with synthetic fibers and the like.

    I always preferred the Justice League to the Avengers in comics. The Justice League always felt more organized and that they were the best heroes (or the best at the time who could show up and fight bad guys regularly) whereas the Avengers were always fighting and arguing with a constantly shifting roster. It didn't help that the 60s "boy's club" writers made most of the male characters talk like chauvinists when women were around.

      I mean, to be fair, this IS W.A.S.P. Wasp; she's a heiress flibbertigibit. Like Paris Hilton with super powers.
      Imagine being paired with a reality television star as your partner. As in- you are a brilliant scientist, and she likes fashion, but you're considered equal.
      I'm not saying it's good writing, I'm just saying I understand.

    • @kaleremmers5095
      @kaleremmers5095 3 года назад +7

      @@VitaminCBable I mean, Hank chose to make the Wasp his partner and gave her powers. So I guess he could have just fired her if he didn't like her. But in reality it was the 60s and pretty much every male character at Marvel was written like that, calling women "dames" and the like.

    • @DSan-kl2yc

      @@kaleremmers5095 well we saw the story. She reminds him of someone, she's in trouble, they actually like each other.
      She's essentially flirting to make him jealous.
      It's all a bit, an act.
      And he's flippant because he's in denial ect.
      obviously he thinks they work well together in their origin. And she's already gungho enough to want to be involved

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron 3 года назад

      The fact that they made her basically Paris Hilton with super powers was a bit of sexism in itself. Making her obsessive with her clothes and appearance, and being flitty and talking about how hot all the guys were. Sue Storm and others were pretty much the same back then. The male superheroes were almost all scientists (even Don Blake an MD was shown to have the "Science skill" trope of knowing all the sciences) and the female superheroes were pretty much just tagging along with their boyfriends. Later writers saved the Wasp character by having her build a fashion empire, thus not throwing out the original characteristics, but turning them into something good.

    • @Someguywithalotoftism
      @Someguywithalotoftism 3 года назад

      I don't think any of this was like super awful I just think it's weird, but it's a completely different historical context. I mean everything was different, especially perspective on the world and how they viewed other people, especially women. So I never like to say it's sexist or something because it's hard to judge people based on a time you weren't in. There are obvious exceptions though like Stalin and stuff

    Odin: Loki, thou art banished to the Isle of Silence!
    Loki: Talkie, talkie, talkie, talkie……
    One of the reasons the Teen Brigade panel seems haunting, is that one of the members resembles a young Jack Kirby. What was odd to me was how Loki’s eyes appeared in the sky. They’re EVERYWHERE!!!
    Those Watches seem fun, but the one I’m holding out for is the Dr. Manhattan symbol. Not only would it tell time now, the future, or several flashbacks (as needed), but it would be it’s own pun!!!
    No, no, just take a Minutemen to think about it. It’ll come to you. Sorry, can’t help. I’m writing comments 12 minutes ago…
    Meanwhile, I recommend comparing this story with its remake Avengers, the Origin from 2012. More modern. Slightly more elaborate. Even boasts a sequel.
    And no one lost Eyebrow control….
