I think the DCT alone makes quite a bit of difference on such a tight track with so many shifts. I wish you would have chosen a manual M4 as well.
Agreed
Why is the M4 only quicker by 3 10ths? Because you drove it in comfort mode Steve. Comfort mode!
Too funny 😂
Pauses vid... Let me get my snacks ready
hahah same.
I made popcorn after reading your comment, thanks!
I was on my way out and had to put things on hold while I watched it.
I actually was having dinner while watching this video! I had put it in the 'watch later' list specifically so I could watch it while having dinner.
I would vote the 1M to be the most valuable in 10 years. They are all great cars, but the 1M is a limited production collector piece.
hydraulic steering!
i think it's the only "normal" car in recent history that has actually appreciated, remarkable
While the 1M has appreciated in value, I think now that the M2 is out, it'll start to decline. No real differences between the two cars other than styling. e92 on the other hand may start to increase due to its very sonorous N/A V8.
Wait for the Boxter and Cayman to appreciate now that the 'Subaru' powered 718 is out.
they might produce some limited sharper m2 version soon though
Steve, which time difference do you expect from such a short circuit.
0,3 s in a 45 s circuit means that on an average circuit twice as long, the difference would be more than half a second between the three cars.
Anyway nice video!
Aren't the gaps between cars all the same Steve? Looks like .3 of a second to me.
This is very deceiving. The track is so small, that the difference between all 3 cars shouldn't be that much. On a longer track you'd see bigger differences.
+Jack Brand He said the gap between the 1M and M2 was closer than the M2 to M4. But in the final results it's .3 between each car.
Wyatt Foster Yes, i noticed that too. He must have misspoke. Surprised they didn't edit that anywhere in the film.
he also said when he finished with the M1 the gap was .2 secs. It was.3secs.
Yeah, according to the clocks the gaps are all 0.3 seconds. And, if this is the M4 competition pack then it is 444bhp and not 425 as he said in the video.
Question time!
Why would you drive the M4 in economical mode surely that would impact the lap times.
I've had a 1M and done 40k miles from which I enjoyed every mile but the car got boring, I remapped mine which helped. But the main point no one seems to point across that my 1M was very dangerous going round bands over 140mph the car used to rock side to side due the the short wheel base making it unstable at high speeds, also very unpredictable when hanging the arse out. My new M3 as much more predictable driving sideways and stable at high speeds.
Lol and how many times do you drive around bends at over 140mph? Couldn't be happier with my 1M. it's quick enough for the road and fun at sensible speeds. Yeah it would probably start to feel ordinary as a daily, but as a weekend car it puts a huge smile on my face every time.
@@yetidh9 I go to autox more than the big track. The short wheelbase means it can turn better in the tight corners.
Traction off mode 4:58
Why drive it in efficient mode? Why not drive it in Sport plus which sharpens engine response? Maybe would get a better time perhaps?
Softens the throttle response so that power delivery isn't so spikey. Actually makes it easier to control on the limit.
Apart from getting the HP wrong for the CP M4 fantastic review. Thanks
Sutcliff can make a track battle between an SUV and a bicycle and yet get more excitement than other journalist and hypercars.
";-)
Sweet cars! Good review Steve. The way he talks while setting lap times shows how good he really is.
Don't know about your guys, but every time I can't go to sleep, I play a video being host from this guy, and baammm!!! I fall asleep !
An E46 M3 would have made the comparison more interesting :D
Add the E39 M5
It isn't so relevant, because this comparison is about two door coupes. The reason i brought up the E46 M3 is because many journalists say that the 1M and M2 are approximately the same size with the E46.
@Julio Cruz Not on this track, mate. I do agree with OP that the e46 would have been a good additions considering the M2 is almost the exact same size and weight as the e46. The M3 CSL would have been the quickest here, no doubt.
+Mzn T but but but ///M!! Lol
Julio Cruz
:)) What the hell... bring it in.. let's blow some tyres!
Throttle mode is efficient while you are lap timing ?
Steve, great video. Which one do you think drives the best? Which is the most fun? Cheers
I'd like to know what tires the 1M and M2 were equipped with? Maybe their small difference in laptimes comes to that? Impressive machines, all three.
Would be interesting to see 6sp MT M4 vs the other manual cars... particularly since the times are so close.
Next time M4 DCT vs M2 DCT. Then it'll be a fair comparison.
no you dumbass, this will never be a fair comparison, it's a different class of vehicle
+ewt415 of course not, but any variables can and should always be reduced
They already did the M2 DCT in the video against the Focus RS. It ran a 46.7, which is slower than the times in this video (though different day, different conditions and different driver).
+ewt415 It's barely a different class. They're practically the same.
THAT's a video I'm interested in, thanks for the mention!
Awesome! 3 of some of my favorite modern M-cars in one vid. Thanks for this!
I didn't expect much difference between the cars on this circuit as the apex speeds of all 3 cars would be similar due to similar weight and layout. the difficulty in getting all the power down on a front engine rear drive car takes away the power advantage of the m4 on a small twisty circuit like this. on a larger circuit with longer straights and fast corners, the m4 will be way ahead.
Take them to a proper track and the difference will be much bigger. M4 can lap the Nurburgring in 7:40-7:45, 1M can't go under 8:10.
Is 25 seconds really that big of a difference though? I mean in a race it would be, but for a street car? Not to mention that your average driver would have difficulty discerning any difference at those performance levels.
Spot on. His conclusion of 'the less money you spend on your BMW M car, the better value you get' makes sense on a small, twisty track like the one he was driving round. With a few more straights and longer, faster bends, the M4's superior power and traction will beat the M2 comfortably.
the Nürnburgring has many highspeed sections and corners. Even way heavier cars perform quite well on that track. But try to drive that m4 on a twisty mountain road, it really feels like a big car there and I am not only talking about the weight.
define "proper" track.
well all depends on the track characteristics and even car setups
i readed description first , hope that is steve , what a journalist !
M4 was the quickest however the gap would have been more realistic if the test was done with the engine in either Sport mode or Sport Plus. The dashboard shots confirm this test was done in Efficient mode on the M4. Why?
Traction off mode 4:58
@@DjNikGnashers Traction off mode only speaks for traction and is switchable independent of the other settings. I own the M4 and the power difference between Efficient and Sports Plus Mode is extreme. M1 and M2 buttons are dependent on the custom settings only.
@@natecollins867 I own an OG M2, and my previous car was a tuned M140i.
The driving modes for engine only affect the throttle map.
In the lower modes the throttle basically isn't fully open until you press the accelerator all the way to the 'click' (which you go 'past' for launch).
In sport and over, you are fully open throttle when the pedal is only halfway down (even spikier in sport+).
For track driving, it's a lot more controllable to have comfort throttle as it's more progressive and not spikey like an on/off switch.
All 3 handle differently. Track times only communicate a fraction of the difference.
Why did you drive the M4 with the "Efficient" engine response???
Traction off mode 4:58
6:06, throttle response on efficient?
LOL Imagine in sport plus..
I noticed that too. I have an M4 and the difference in responsiveness between efficient and sport ist massive. Sport plus is even more direct but the difference to sport is less noticeable. I could imagine on a small and fiddly track like that one he didn't want the pedal to be oversensitive at lower positions? Sport and sport plus already give a lot of gas at lower throttle in comparison to efficient, which almost feels sluggish after driving around in sport for a while.
I'm not a racing driver though, so what do I know. I'm sure he knows about those settings.
+xcvxcv bro ud know better as an M4 driver than him, M4 takes a while getting used to..
And cold engine also?
xcvxcv I have an M4 aswell and the difference is noticeable especially when driving the car hard.
How on earth the way bigger M4 weights almost the same as the M2? That's messed up BMW
Its more expensive so they could use lighter more expensive materials
***** I think he meant the M2 should be much more lighter because its smaller.
The M2 has a whole new back end and isn't faster on corners than the 1M. Also, the M4 isn't that light for it's size, so the M2 should have been lighter than it ended up been and let's not kid ourselves, the M2 is no bargain either
The M4 is light for its size. Do you know how big it is? It's as big as the 4 door M3 sedan. It's wider and longer than alot of 2 door coupes.
devilzmantis Light for it's size, well a A380 is light for it's size as well. It's size is the issue for many people.
4:57 He's got it in efficient mode! Unfair.
Jovan Korica I
The 1M will always be my favourite BMW. I just wish it came with the 4.0L V8 from the E92 M3.
Why ?
It's a tiny car and wouldn't be 'better' with a huge heavy V8 up front. More power isn't going to be any faster if you can't put the power down on the road.
The M4 looks stunning.
Which one of the three did you enjoy driving the most Steve?
Got a 2015 M235i and in the real world i.e. the public road don't think there is much to separate them so agree with Mr Sutcliffe less is more..
Question why did u put the M4 engine mode in efficiency ? It limits the top end power delivery....I will agree that efficiency would be easier to keep from over steering but other than that I'm sure it should be atleast half a second faster minimum
m4 with manual would be more equal to compare... Manaul vs Manual :-)
Yes, it should have been M4 manual without competition pack. I think that M4 will be slower
Thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you!! The 1M is my favorite, but they've skyrocketed in cost.
Great Video! Thanks Steve
Why was M4 in 'efficient' mode? (at 5:41)
The M4 would have had a lot better time if the engine was set to sport + mode
Kaveh Hedayatzadeh he is. Check 5:41 under the gear position indicator
No, the the suspension was set to sport plus, but the throttle was set to efficient! The car is much quicker in sport plus. Not sure if the transmission was set to the sportier setting...
@@EricfromQuebec I bet all that does is make more noise and match a given accelerator position to a higher throttle/boost level to make it feel faster in normal driving, flat out makes no difference one is making 100% power at 100% accelerator and the other at 75% accelerator but no more of it.
Steve another great video. I'm really interested as to if the Cayman GTS is still your favourite road car for reasonable money. It must have been a year or more and plenty of other car reviews in between but does the memory of driving the Cayman GTS still stand out as your favourite road car?
I'm impressed at how "good" the M4 CP sounds next to the std M4,it seems they disabled (thanks) the Active Sound Design and improved the induction noise, now it doesn't sound artificial or anemic.I also noticed that it wasn't moving the rear end all over, stiffer dampers and better tires seems to resolve the issue.
BTW those polished 666M look awesome
Comp pack still has active sound but its easily removed either by coding or pulling the plug for it on the amp under the boot lining. did mine in about 6 minutes. sounds so much better without it.
jflexton
Well it doesn't sound like crap like the std M4
i wouldnt know, mine's had the Mperformance exhaust fitted since delivery. i never drove it with the standard exhaust fitted although the test drive in the dealers car before i bought mine sounded like a 420 hence me adding the MPE. the comp pack has slightly different tone as the ECU is tuned to produce more burble. plus i think the OEM rear box is slightly different on the comp pack as they list it as a sport exhaust. not quite the MPE but better than standard. thats probably what your hearing. both cars will have Active sound unless modified as for some strange reason BMW think people want 3D exhaust sound in the car which just sounds odd to me.
M6 missing for an ultimate test, although it probably would be the slowest
Great review!!
Probably because its outgoing soon and a new version is on its way. The current 6er has been around for some time now even in LCI form
not in a straight line lol
IN a straight m4 is still quick 0-100.. past 100 m6 will catch up
Good video...as we are on a race track can we acknowledge that 0.3 secs over 5 laps (a small track day session) equates to 1.5s? This is a whole straight and why there are 100ths between different race cars and not tenths? Keep up the good work and keep off the telly
It would also be awesome if you compare Cayman GTS vs the M2.
Add in the M6 for fun. Would actually be curious to see if the power would be enough to rip the bigger car around a tight track like this in a similar time. And then a Z4 35is for more curiosity...
And a 116i, because why not spoil the comparison all the way
I would take all of them!
can somebody give a point of why they put m4's throttle response in efficient mode?
Good video. Mr Steve
I dont care about which is faster... the M4s are more beautiful and sexier than any other Bmws...
Great video. Thank you.
The m4 CP had 450bhp not 425
444 actually but ye
it's 450bhp measured on the Dyno.
+devilzmantis I know my dad has a Austin yellow m4
Well read again the spec sheet beacause the M4 CP has 450 (probably more but that's what BMW declares)
In the video its driven in efficient mode!? Ive got the m4 and that truely is a terrible set up to have o track. the throttle response in sport plus is insane, efficient feels sluggish.
I can't wait to see 2 yr old M2s for sale!
Nice review
I’m between financing a CPO 328 or leasing a M240i. What do you guys think?
he do it the race with efficient mode , this is not correct . He must to change to the SPORT PLUS mode
I like all BMW M's all AUDI RS's and all MERCEDES BENZ AMG's... just give me one of them!
Why is the m4 in efficient mode and not sport plus ?
Very difficult control in a track as this in Sport + mode. It is necessary to be a pilot. I am not saying that this guy isn't professional, I am just saying that to explore the car limits must be a professional driver. M4 is a DREAM!
M4 is in efficient mode!! Eco lap? Lol It has sport+ for a reason!
It's not in efficient mode, do you know anything about BMW's? It's in DSC Off mode which is the only mode you should be using o a track, Sport and Sport+ mode are useless on the track because having a throttle where you get half of the pedal usage is stupid on a track (too twitchy is not a good thing on a track). It's useful on the road because you don't need to use the entire pedal travel to get 100% throttle but on a track you want the full pedal travel to modulate the throttle correctly.
Yes I do know a thing or two about BMW's because I own an M4 CP Ian. It's set to Efficient mode for throttle. I didn't mention the DCS or MDM mode so why even comment on it. The Sport+ throttle eliminates a lot of the lag from throttle response giving you a more aggressive and faster responding pedal out of the corners and yes a shorter pedal. Your analogy of the pedal usage is floored because half of that pedal usage is dead space waiting for the response from the anti-lag system. Yes efficient gives you a longer throttle and some people prefer that so they can modulate it better but if you've driven the M4(M4CP) on track you can easily modulate the throttle in sport+ which imo gives the better and faster response time from the throttle therefore faster lap times. Either way the comparison between these cars is floored. DCT vs Manual for a start...
6:05 The powertrain is in efficient? Probably not the best mode for setting lap times?
All it does is adjust throttle sensitivity. Has 0 impact on performance.
This is what happens on DSC Off mode, it stops the throttle being at 100% with only half the pedal movement. Sport and Sport+ mode are useless on a track, they remove halve the pedal travel making it impossible to properly modulate the throttle round corners.
Well it improves the performance as being twitchy is never a good thing on a track, also you can't modulate the throttle properly on Sport or Sport+ mode.
I completely disagree - Sport+ on the M3/4 drastically improves throttle response - not just the amt of pedal movement you need to elicit that response. It's night and day. He handicapped himself in the M4.
Conclusion: ANY BMW you buy is a great drivers car and very fast.
It's such a short track that the time differences are not that much. Try a longer track and the time differences start to expand.
1M is not that old compared to M2. And M4 is a clearly bigger car but they really tried to keep it light weight, so much so that it's not much heavier than M2. And you never get the chance to extract all that power on such a short track.
I'm a bit confused as to why he had the m4's throttle in Efficient mode. My m4 feels like a 20d in that mode.
same with mine, efficient mode is for crawling out of the cul de sac, i call it granny mode. once warmed up mine goes straight into sport + every time. makes a huge difference to throttle response. ive tested this on a track day at Bedford Autodrome. in efficient it was a fair few seconds a lap slower. it is easier to light up the rears coming out of corners in Sport + so that may be why he was in efficient as he also had TC fully off. the fastest track mode A-B ive found is Sport + and MDM. TC off on a track is for getting those "no drifting" flags waved at you!
Cool battle!
When are they gonna start using a proper circuit?
But which is more fun?! Please reply Steve!
this
get the M4. end of story, more fun, more everything
+Mike Shino I have a 1M with an Akrapovic exhaust, I'm alright
mz21 awesome 👍
+Mike Shino thanks!
What does it mean to "lean on the rear end"?
The engine in the M4 was cold ?!
Great driving
why not a drag race too? what watch is that Steve?
I wonder if the new 718 Cayman S is faster than all of these?
Because around the Nurburgring the 718 Boxster S is faster than a stock M4... So more rigid and light Cayman might be even faster? Or not?
why is this uploaded in 360p?
why is it only 360p?
I want to se M235i ( M240I) vs M2!!!!! to know how BMW pretend to sell us that cars.
What was the dual clutch M2 lap time?
Why was the M4 in eco mode?
Why they dont make an bmw 2 series with 4 dours?
Hi Autoexpress, is this 1M tested with Michelin PS2 or PSS? Thanks
5:41 This guy really drove the M4 on Efficient mode, what a joke of a review. Not to mention 0.3 seconds on a 45 second track will widen quite a bit on a larger track.
6:54 your oil temp is at 80 C after a fast lap???
If the M4's engine power was dumbed down to match the M2's straight line performance, I reckon the lap times would be equal or the M2 would be a touch quicker. Take away the DCT and tire advantage the M4 probably has, and the M2 would be the clear winner. Especially for the price.
yes take away a turbo too while you're at it to really even it out... reality is its a small difference on a tiny circuit, which would widen quite a bit on a longer track.
where did they film this? what is that track called?
yaaaa the best episode was posted on my bday lol
I like M4 CP super machine
Steve, I'm pretty sure you're the man
It says playback error :(
Humm, maybe you should test them in longer tracks. Offcourse, the difference would be small in a sub-50 second track!
6:31 Why in efficient mode on the M4?
Tyres are everything. The M4 competition has better tyres as well as it's track biased suspension set up.
how can it be a good test with one of the cars being an automatic?
Agreed. I reckon the M2 would have been the quickest with the DCT.
I believe the M2 in the Macan video was a manual as well. In the Focus RS video it was a DCT and ran a 46.7 (but again different day, conditions and driver).
They already tested the M2 with the DCT and it was slower on this particular track. Different day and driver which might make the difference but either way.
Why in gods name did he have the M4 drivetrain set in efficient??? No wonder people say they don't sound as nice. Valves are closed in efficient.
*444* horsepower for the M4 Competition Package as opposed to 425 for the standard M4.
Sick video...but the M4 by 3-10ths?! Surely this guy can knock it down by 3 seconds if he had another go or to?
video does not load
m2 vs cayman gts or s please!
I love all 3 cars.. But why did he drive the M4 around the track in Efficient mode???? That took power away from the M4.. It would have been a quicker track time in Sport plus mode.
Why have the M4 with the "DCT "gearbox makes no sense, it would of been more fair with all manuals in my opinion .
Am I weird for liking the 1M the best? I just love it's looks so much more than the others.
There is a slight matter of fuel loads, seems to me M4 was carrying the most...
I didn't know William Shatner did car reviews
New shirt Steve?
Sutcliffe what a legend!!
0:54 how the hell did it go from DCT to manual?
Nvm
