I bought an ebike after starting with heart problems. I am getting fitter by the day and feeling better than I have for a long time. It helps with hills and is so easy to ride; a total joy.

Totally agree. I used to cycle a lot then had heart problems and gave up cycling more or less. Last year I wanted to join my much fitter son on a tour in the Western Isles so borrowed an ebike. It was truly wonderful, I was able to keep up, climb and stay at his pace. The price needs to come down a lot for most people before it seriously takes off in this country but it is really the answer for people with heart and other difficulties who would otherwise love to cycle...and you still have to put in effort.

I completely agree that the criticism people offer of "it's cheating" to ride an ebike is utter rubbish. If you don't like riding ebikes, don't ride them. This review pointed out that people who ride ebikes often get more exercise than they would if they were on a conventional bike. And even if they didn't, whose business is that but their own? A lot of people find that they ride more frequently and ride farther on an ebike than they would otherwise. And at the end of the day, it's THEIR choice and their money. If people want to be cycling purists, that's all good. Just don't be cycling snobs. Mind your own business. This bike wouldn't be a fit for what I want to do, but it's an honest and fair review -- good on ya.

People need to take into consideration a lot of people get e-bikes due to health reasons as well. I've recently been diagnosed with arthritis in my knee and also Achilles tendonitis. I got two choices, quit cycling for a very long time maybe for life or buy an E Bike, so I did the latter and it arrives Sunday.

Good review. I have a crossfire which has transformed my cycling principally because I live in an extremely hilly area with 1 in 5 to 7 hills. At 71, despite being a lifelong cyclist, I struggled to get up them and thought maybe they might induce a heart attack. So not worth it. I can now look at any downhill and explore it without worrying about having to exhaust my self getting back up. On unpowered rides, I used to be able to get up 2 sea-level to 300ft climbs in 10 miles. Now I can do a lot but it doesn't half deplete the battery. Sometimes by 10% on one climb. I changed the Kenda tyres to Schwalbes and what a difference in control and feel. It is much more taught and being a mountain biker for 20 years, I can now chuck the bike about with confidence. If I get abuse from roadies, I shout back "Well are you 71, then"

I was thinking of the journey to visit my sister who lives a little over 12 miles away. I live at 200ft asl and in the first 5 miles the road climbs to 1000ft asl. After that the road is downhill or fairly flat. Of course, there is the return journey where the last 5 miles are all downhill. The weather at 1000ft can produce thick hill fog or black ice in winter so April to September is probably the best. Alternatively, I could take a folding ebike onto the bus and cycle home.

I liked this review as I have just brought my first e Bike a Mayfair Highwayman from Argos, I have been thinking of it for a very long time just like this guy. I am 57 year old had a heart condition since 2010. I used to love cycling and missed it, in 2018 did get a normal cycle and cycled for 6 months but in Keighley it is hilly and it was very hard. When I was younger I cycled miles and didn't pass my driving test till 2000 and always relied on a cycle. When I first took my e bike out for a run I expected to be very tired and find it hard, I must of cycled 6 mile using the motor and came back and didn't even have a sweat.
I did try to get up some big hills but no way as I am well unfit and like said with a e bike we ourselves have to do a part of the work, but slight hill I looked very impressive and slight hills I struggled with 3 years ago with a normal bike when I was fitter just climbed up them making it that little more easier. I like to walk my dog as well been doing that for years a few mile a day for an hour, now I can cycle as well and the e bike I have I am very happy with. Like this man i didn't pay a lot for it just £649 and yes the worst part of the cycle is that extra weight.
I used to cycle racers, road bikes this is my first strieght handle bar cycle a city cycle and feel a lot safer, my cycles weighed about 12 kg to 15 kg I think this is 22 kg, if it wasn't for the motor I would find it very hard a lot harder then the road bikes I had, but certainly the motor makes it worth while and any exercise is better then no exercise. The same reasons during the epidemic used car a lot less and now only use car for my wife who is disabled and my son to go to colllege about 2500 mile a year, for myself it is the cycle anyday if I go somewhere on my own it is my bike anytime over car. I am saving because not using the car as much and the price of fuel is just going up, its a shame my all family didn't cycle but well worth the change agree with this man 100%.

In my youth I was very very fit, I’d often go out ( 2/3 times a week when I worked shifts) for 40 mile rides on my mountain bike in the hilliest areas Wales has to offer. One day I rode to my girlfriends house, about 5 miles away. I rode as hard as I could, the wind was tough, a bit of flat, a few slopes up and down and when I arrived I’d averaged 17mph. So, the 15mph rating on these bikes is actually pretty good even though it doesn’t sound fast, it challenges me at my fittest.
I rode this bike 2 days ago, a colleague had bought it and I had a go. It’s very heavy, but doesn’t feel it, I’ve had very expensive bikes in the past and never felt this was a cheapo, admittedly I didn’t go far ( weather was bad but I will try it again ) but I was shocked how good it was.
You mentioned how the air felt clean, the grass green etc, I worked in a factory years ago and started at 0545, a colleague and I both rode in, on a spring morning, birds singing gentle warm sun on my face I would get into work in a great frame of mind v getting out of my car groggy because I hadn’t woke up. I recommend it ( although I was fortunate to have shower facilities when I got there ).
You mentioned no rear suspension, a full suspension bike is a dog on the road, it bounces along sapping you energy as you peddle. More expensive bikes have a ‘lock out’ feature to stop the suspension working, but it’s not a feature on cheaper bikes.
A good honest review, enjoy your bike.

      Hi, Johnny.
Just took a look at the Tern website, and although pricey they look good quality!
But...that’s the reason I stuck with a Halfords brand. Easy to just take it back to the shop if it goes wrong, rather than trying to communicate with a internet company.
On the subject of punctures. The front wheel just pops off and is easy to fix. The back is more fiddly. But...the slime stuff I mentioned in this video should sort that!

If your 800ft climb is not too steep, say over 10%, then I would try to get up those in City mode (for me) which is one up from ECO and without pushing too much. If I put it in sport, which is one up from City, the battery drains like crazy. Make sure you get a battery which is at least the wattage of the crossfire but preferably 500. My neighbour has A Kalkhoff with this battery and his range is much more than mine.

Johnny Mac The only difference taking the back wheel off compared to a normal bike is that you have to cut the cable ties off that secures the cable from the motor to the controller.. three of them... and then just separating the two half’s of the connector ... takes just seconds...I took several photos before I took the back wheel off ( to fit better tyres ) .. only tricky thing for me was putting the silver ‘boss’ in the right position.. it has a cut out and the wheel won’t sit right if the boss cut out is not aligned correctly

I live in your area too, i can sympathise with the hills around Dover, some are very challenging, i went on a 52 mile round trip from Deal to Dungeness, wind in my face on the way back, then Folkestone Hill from the harbour, then Castle Hill, Dover. Absolutely rung out when i got back, Good luck with the e.bike, i was considering one but not quite ready, so got a light hybrid. Thanks for the great informative video.

here now in 2023 , ive been cycling to work 2 weeks on 2 weeks off for 3 years, basicaly trains dont run at 5pm in the morning!!! so i can drive have a full DL but choose not to drive as its lazy, ive always loved cycling , im 47 now and after my hybrid bike was stolen ( yeah i left it unlocked outside a shop) i replaced the hybrid with a cheap "dont wanna spend much on a bike attitude" man it was tiring me out just doing 7.5 miles , 3incline hills ..... the bike felt sluggish and to much effort... my whole life has been effected since .. normaly id love my cycle to work 7.5 eat it up a few hills (ps my hybrid had 24 gears. my cheap replacement had 21. ... id get home relax take the kids to the park then start contemplating if to book a taxi which is expensive if you book at 11pm at night . taxi would often not turn up anyway way past my booked time .. hence ive just got a carrara vengence e , just riding it from the train station took me 1 minute on eco and i felt i put the effort in with out feeling the strain...

Does it feel like a normal bike without the motor assistance? Or does the weight hold it back ?

  • @adibop1

I had a normal carrera for few years and I was happy with it. I then tried a Vulcan ebike and wow! it opened up the whole valley I live in. I'm from Wales, hills in every direction. I loved the Vulcan so much that I spent 5k on a merida ebike and it was worth every penny. Loads of people own them now. Great fun but the Vulcan is a great bike.

Great info......I am just about approaching getting rid of my car, I have a superb bike but where I live in a mountain valley its just about borderline too hard to haul shopping from town uphill for 6k especially after a fun packed wine evening, and want to do a train exploration all over Eastern Europe with an ebike

You could, ahem, derestrict it if you want a bit more speed. Move the speed sensor from the wheel to the crank arms and whooosh! :0) Slightly more seriously that was a very good and refreshingly honest review. Some bike mags are in the pockets of the manufacturers and reviews are often a tad biased.

A good video and what a coincidence Kris, I got myself an e-bike a few weeks ago. I'd been thinking about getting one for a year or so and It's a fantastic machine, I'm over the moon with it. I agree with you in that it makes rides pleasurable with the assistance it gives you and that in turn results in easier and longer rides so still excellent for fresh air, fitness, mobility and general well being. Well done mate.

Great review. Theres an ebike dealership in my village. Just a little corner shop. It used to be quiet and was only open by appointment. Now they are busy everytime I pass. Great to see them making money in these times and getting folk to take it up. A friend of mine who got one said it gave him plenty of exercise still but with increased options. He could go further and/or take it easier on his rides. Win win.

This is the best review of the Carrera Vengance e-bike that I have seen.
I bought this bike 2 days before the lockdown began.
What a godsend. I've used it to commute into London everyday for the last 2 months.
I have a few steep hills to get up and down enroute, and the power assist for an 56 year old with dodgy knees is brilliant.
With the money that I am saving on train fares, it will have payed for itself within 6 months.

I am an old geezer, and not in very good health, but that new bike sure looks like fun. I haven't really ridden since the early 70's, and I know there have been many changes for the better since then. I didn't know they made electric bikes, but I might have to check it out. I could use one where I live in Oklahoma to go to some of my sites I detect.

Great video Kris. It's a journey I'm hoping to embark on myself soon. I've never been a cyclist but have been taking my daughter on the back of a knackered old bike for a few weeks and she adores it, singing all the way. It's perfect for entertaining her for a few hours before bedtime. An ebike would be perfect as the hills are a killer. We don't need anything too fancy so that bike looks perfect 👌 cheers. Ps if you ever find yourself up near North Yorkshire you are very welcome to come for a dig and a pint. All the best!

Good honest review matey. Bought mine second hand last August , done 1000mls since with no problems. After having back op's regular bike bit to much on hills, this is just perfect . Eco mode last 50 miles on mixed roads slightly less on steep terrain. Agree with saddle comment after 20miles even with cycling shorts 'monkey butt' rears its ugly head!

You have rear hub motor which aren't great on hills. Mid mount motors can manage steep hills okay because they utilise gears more effectively. Hub motors fine for other applications but not steep hills.

Bit of a shame about the rear suspension, but the fact of the matter is that having both rear suspension and rear carrying ability is a bit of a niche market in bicycles at the moment, and it's only very recently that the concept has even been justified by electric assistance. About the only bicycle-type ebike you could get like that right now is the R&M high end bikes and those cost thousands of pounds.

Hills!!.. Whoever thought 250w was enough don't live in Wales. The hills are long and steep, one particular hill near by and just happens to be one I have to take on the return ride is ridiculously steep.
I'm fine with 15.5mph max assist but would prefer a motor that would assist at least 50/50 with these Welsh mountains and give my knee a break.
I seen several e bikes around town.. Don't think I've seen a 250w motor on any of them.
