While walking her dog near the Thames River about 25-30 years ago, my mom found a fossilized fish. She kept it as a novelty, and left it to me when she died. I took it to the local university, Western Ontario, to the Natural Science department to try to find out some more about it. I met with one of the professors who was a little surprised to see the specimen I had. Turns out the fish was endemic to South America about 40-million years ago. I donated it to them, and now it's on display in the main hall when you come into the Nat-Sci building.
I also got a "mystery box" when my grandmother died, and in that box was a few souvenirs she had bought when travelling the world, and another box. The 2nd box contained a manuscript with messy handwriting on its green cover, and a hoard of First Nations pottery and flint arrowheads and tools. The manuscript had been written by a man named Wilfred Jury, who was a prominent local archeologist way back in the day. I remembered there was a museum named after him, and bundled everything up and went there. The first things I showed the museum people (after explaining why I was there), were the pottery shards and flint artifacts. They were nearly speechless, but remarked on the quality of the workmanship. They all went completely silent when the manuscript came out, long thought lost to time. The guy that seemed to be in charge said "we don't have much of a budget for acquisitions" without taking his eyes of the manuscript. I replied "you don't need one, this is where this belongs". All of it is now on permanent display, with my name on the card under 'Donated by', though the museum has since changed its name.
As to how my grandmother wound up with it in the first place... she was the local librarian for 50 years, and helped Mr Jury with his research. The artifacts and (signed) manuscript were a thank you for her work.

The coolest thing I ever found was about 40 years ago. I was out on a horse camping trip, that means just me and my horse, and I found the remains of an old wagon road that kinda wound around this hill. I was looking down into the crevice of the bottom of the hill and I could see something shinny down there. It was about 75 ft or so to the bottom. I secured my horse and slid down the hill. I found an old wagon wreck! It was totally undisturbed too. It was pulled by two horses/mules and their bones were still in the harness. There was all kinds of stuff there, cooking pots, clothes, boots and much more. I didn't really have time to dig around there and always thought I would come back to it, just never could find the time, life just took much out of my day. I always wished i had had a camera with me because that was so cool.

I took up metal detecting as a weight loss program. I have been going for just over a year and have quite a few odd, and valuable things,, it's nearly turning into a hoard now, but the best find was a few weeks before moving to a different sate. I had been driving by a place that obviously been a home at one time because of a (about 100 yards long) tree lined driveway. after 4 hours of finding almost nothing but a couple broken toy cars, bailing wire, and shredded wind chime I was on my way out and found a 28.5 pound paint can of silver dimes ranging from 1900 to 1964. over 5000 after counting and organizing. I have pictures.

I grew up in Vermont and in middle school we had an awesome history teacher who took us on a bunch of day trips to interesting places in our local area. The coolest/weirdest one was a spot in a town called Castleton, where someone bought a piece of land and while excavating for a basement found it was all clean yellow sand exactly like you’d find on a beach. As he got deeper he found some huge bones and realized it was a whale fossil, apparently before Vermont had its green mountains part of it was what they called an “inland sea” if I remember correctly.
The planet tilts on its axis every 12000 years give or take a few I believe. Einstein even accepted that the planet did indeed tilt, and had spent the last years of his life trying to figure out how it tilted. His colleague, Charles Hapgood, wrote a book “ The Adam and Eve story”, which also discusses this tilt and was classified until 2016 when a highly redacted version was released. This continent was once under water is what I’m getting at 👍🏻. Fly over WA state and in the middle of the state in Moses lake there is a large sandy desert! From above it looks just like what you’d see on the ocean floor near the beach but on a massive scale. They have also found ocean dwelling fish skeletons in the area 😱! Hopefully y’all live about a few thousand feet, the 12k timeline is in the 2040s if I’m not mistaken 🥳😎!

I'm going to have to stick with it being related to either Plate Tectonics (ie past supercontinents, which are now broken up), and/or, that once upon a time the sea was higher and thus the coats were in different locations. There are lots of inland areas that have fossilized sea life, after all.
_(mind you, I'm not saying the earth's axis doesn't shift a bit [rotational precession I think is the term], but I'm not sure I could believe it'd be to any extreme that'd cause those sort of geographical changes... but I'm also not in any scientific field to say)_
@@DUKE_of_RAMBLE I agree with you in the fact that I am speculating based off of research and critical problem solving skills I’ve been blessed with. I am neither a scientist with a degree, nor was I hear when the earth might have gone through such geological changes such as these could have taken place. I believe there is more than one depending on the direction or type of tilt but the main term would be “Axial precession”, but that could just be a type of precession.
I don’t know where my comment thread started but I believe I mentioned the sea life fossils in Washington state? Or mentioned if you fly over Washington state you can see what appears to be ripples of sand on a massive scale dead center of WA.! We used to go ride the sand dunes all the time on our dirt bikes growing up in north idaho. I always thought it was super weird for there to just be a massive chunk of sand dunes not more than a couple miles off of I-90 in Moses lake. It feels like you go through a portal and wind up in the Sahara lol.

The weirdest thing I discovered was a tree miles into a national forest, with a few names and a date carved into it. The tree wasnt on a trail so the odds of finding it were pretty low but what makes it a truly bizarre discovery was the fact that the carvings were made forty years ago on the exact day I found it.... to this day I think about that find

In regard to the Dragon Stone, I know someone who found one of those and remarkably it was shaped like a turtle shell. We all thought it was a petrified turtle shell. It was pretty large too. I hope he still has it. It looks cool. I wish it were mine.

I grew up as an Army brat at Ft. Bragg, NC. When my dad and I were digging for worms for a fishing trip, we struck metal. It turned out to be a perfectly oiled and preserved M-60 machine gun. It had gone missing from an armory some 25 years earlier. Naturally we returned it (after firing it off a few times). 😂

What rust? It was packed in oil and sealed in plastic. It was in perfect condition. It was clearly stolen, but whoever buried it either got too scared to keep it or forgot to get it back. Hard to believe it was forgotten though.

Dodecahedrons in the Roman time were a multi-use multi-purpose tool that basically every household had at least one. Surveyors also tended to carry a lot of them. I was always taught that they are a surveyor's instrument so that when they have to replace their tools they can take the damaged tool and line it up to one of the holes so that when they have made a new handle for their tool they can match it back to the circle that was first determined to be accurate from the broken one. And then always have a perfect fit putting their new tool handle back on.
One version of the dodecahedron was certainly used for knitting. But most of the big heavy ones we find today but I was always taught were nothing but survey instruments. Romans used surveying pain quite a bit and a dodecahedron could be tossed into a boggy or swampy area with the surveying chain on it to get a reasonably accurate measurement in areas that would be unwise or unrealistic to send a person

The coolest thing found near to me was the entire very well preserved woolly mammoth. It was only about 3 miles from my house at the time. Now, it sits in it's own museum in Fairview Utah. It's huge! I had no idea until they assembled it next to the museum in it's own museum. This thing is massive!! It surprised me. Even when you see pictures that are too scale you cannot truly see how huge these things are without standing near one! Or at least I never could not for real like that

Hey I think all of those on 13:50 might just be valuable collectibles of artsmen craft. Either tgat or similar to the assissin’s creed games it would remind you of a technological item. To me they may just be another piece of art. So who knows what they could be. But I do have only two possibilities that are listed.

Nothing too impressive but behind the house I grew up in in Vermont was a very very big forest. The forest had been used for all kinds of things from abandoning cars and washing machines to giant granite mines (at least 50 years old now shut down). All of it was so cool to see but even further back there were these caves that had hundreds of signatures and markings stating that people had been there. It was always very cool to see the many markings of people that have come and gone. For those that are curious as to where the caves specifically are all I'll say is I lived maybe 10-15 minutes away from Montpelier near camel's hump.

Being that they were found in caches of Roman coins, it would make sense that the holes in the Roman dodecahedrons were used to measure coin sizes.
Coins from that era were standardized in weight, not size. Coins of the same value could be several mm different in size. Also, hand struck coins were very roughly circular. Few of them would have had any level of regularity. The circles in the objects would have had no relation to any given denomination of coin without having a mark to indicate such.
On top of that, a simple paddle with holes would've been way more convenient than a dodecahedron.
I remember a recent news story of one of those metal bound spheres slammed into someone's white van somewhere in the mid-west a few winters back.

The dodecahedrons were used to join canvas or cloth tarps together, like for tents and pavilions. The ones with holes were for different sized poles to raise the tarps and the ones without holes were to just join the tarps. Without them the tarps would just rip.

My brother found a 1867 silver dollar in a river near we’re I live. On his way back to shore he dropped it into the mud near his feet it took him 10 minutes to find the coin and we went home with a cool new coin.

We had a monolith in hungary as well , but it had to be removed ,because people were trying to destroy it (not a suprise) for no reason and some people were crying on TV because it was empty inside. The monolith was made by 2 youtubers called pamkutya.

The dodecahedrons, that are usually found with money may be an early version of a calculator, turning the sides from one size hole, or coloured side to another indicating different values aquired while counting. This could be used as proof of value acquired.
Those last creature that got “wiped out” seem to have suffered from a catastrophic event, a massive mud slide. I wonder how large (global?) that event was and can these creatures (deaths) be carbon dated?

This is definitely a family legend and I have no way to confirm this but our family may have the long lost journal of Maria von Trapp from the sound of music. Apparently, my great great grandmother was a friend of hers and may have helped write some of the songs in Maria’s journal. This would have been around the time when the von Trapp’s where in America.

Could the decahedrons not have been used in the manufacturing of coins ? They were usually found with coins and have different size holes, also wax was used often when casting metals like bronze or copper.

I once found a coin dated 2004 from Cyprus while digging in my back yard. I live in the UK, don't know anyone from Cyprus, and my back yard isn't accessible from the street. Still don't know how it got there. My family owns the house since the 60's.
My guesses - maybe a bird dropped it? Otherwise it may have come in with soil, compost or potted plants (an immigrant worker accidentally dropped it while working at a nursery)?

1. It could be like a piggy bank becaus of all the different holes. Different coins are different sizes.
2. It might be a thing used for crafting suggesting the wax and spheres and different holes and cold places that they were found

The coin checking theory seems plausible. they haven't found a whole shit ton of em' judging by the gist of the video, but I'm guessing they weren't for anti counterfeiting, they were using em' to shave coins down. Put the side edge of the coin in the whole, push hard and rotate coin while you do. Only shave just a little off each coin, nobody notices. You pocket the gold and silver shavings, if you handle a lot of coins it could be quite profitable...
( either that or a multi sized candle holder, unless that was just a way to hide one from suspicion.)
Septarian nodules (the "dragon stone") are gorgeous when polished. I was given a small, palm-sized one with very visible black druzy going down a crack, with the rest carved and polished to look like an egg. ... Unsurprisingly, septarian is carved into egg shapes pretty often.
