People that live in Buenos Aires are called Porteños, because it was a city really important by it's ports :) You can use Dulce de Membrillo to make Pasta Frola, it's a delicious pie recipe! :)

In Argentina we also eat dulce de leche with toasts for breakfast or as a filling for pastries, well, we put dulce de leche in everything :p Is particularly delicious in a cake we call chocotorta wich is basically layers (4 or 5) of chocolate cookies damped in milk or coffee (or both, why not?) And a mixture made with dulce de leche and cream cheese or cream in equal parts. I think it could be a great use for the dulce de leche you just had in your box ;)

Hi, I'm from Argentina, and I'm quite happy with the selection of products. I'll just add some things that apparently are not clear in the booklet.
The dulce de memebrillo is actually quince jam. It is usually eaten in sweet pies as a filling, and in the most classical dessert, the "postre vigilante", which consist in simply a slice of jam with a slice of fresh cheese, such as muzzarela, or cuartirolo, the argentine staple.
The mate infusion derives from a much less famous tradition outside of Argentina, called "mate cocido" (literally "cooked mate"), wich you can achive simply by brewing yerba mate the same way you would brew loose leaf black tea. It is traditional to sweeting it with charred sugar cubes, and also add milk to it. It tastes delicious that way.

This box barely represents the awesomeness of the goodies from Argentina. I'm from Argentina but I live in Brazil since I was 5 and about 2 years ago I went to Buenos Aires and got a bag full of sweets. You DEFINITELY need to try Bocaditos Cabsha, Bananitas Dolca, Dulce de Leche from Salamandra, Tita, Alfajor Jorgito, Mantecol, Rhodesia, Vauquita.. well that's what I remember anyway.

Hi Emmy!!! I love Argentina! I went there about a year ago and I'll never forget that trip. Such a beautiful place! Just to clarify, they call porteños those who live in the city of Buenos Aires :)
And you should really try their meat, specially "ojo de bife" and "empanadas", they're amazing.
    Greetings from Brazil

It almost sounds like you're saying "trolley world", ha! A fun little fact about the dulce de membrillo: membrillo is the quince fruit, which is called marmelo in Portuguese, which gives the sweet jelly paste its name in Portuguese, marmelada. Marmalade in English comes from the Portuguese word & sweet, which was later adapted to lots of other fruits! Guyabada/Goiabada, made from guava is scrumptious, one of my favorites. They taste great with cream cheese on crackers or mixed with citrus to make teas!

I've had the fruit gel-pate in Spain and I think it's made from quince, which is not something common in the U.S. to find in a produce section, so I'm not surprised the the flavor was hard to place.

Porteños are the people from the capital city of Argentina, Buenos Aires city where the main port is located (for many years this wad the only port that could be used to export things making other states resent Buenos Aires and making this nickname kind of an insult to the people who lived there).
Great video and greetings from Buenos Aires.

Those are not typical food of Buenos Aires! As someone who lives in Buenos Aires that jam is not even sold in every day stores or your local market you have to go to a super pricy store to get that, those cookies? never saw them in my life. that tea is a very snobish tea, nobody here drinks that on a daily basis
Olive jam? WTF?? I wish I could send you a REAL Argentinian treat box

Dulce de Leche is like the best thing on the world! You can eat it with practically everything! We use it to make cakes, ice cream, pastries, cookies or just to binge with it straight out from the jar!
Also you should definitely try making some Pasta Frola ( because that's a LOT of membrillo and you will get tired of the sweet flawor if you eat it all alone), is like a sweet pie made with membrillo and it's DELICIOUS! (and also quite simple to make) great video Emmy! ★

You had actually already tried dulce de leche when you ate Argentinian food in Emmy Eats Argentina, the alfajores are made with two cookies and dulce the leche in the middle, you had two alfajores that time; the one you called straight forward alfajor (I don't remember the brand) and the Guaymayen, which is one of the most common brands here.

I feel that some of those items might be confusing... Buenos Aires is not in the Patagonia Region. Other provinces are part of the Patagonia, Buenos Aires is in the east-center of the country while Patagonia is pretty much the whole south, which is pretty far away from BsAs.

Great video! Dulce de membrillo is also popular in Spain, it's made with quince and you should slice it or cut in squares. A tip: toast + dulce de membrillo + Burgos cheese!! That will made an incredible meal!;) (also in a sandwich, you can use membrillo in many ways, all of them delicious!)

I got the try the world box earlier this week as well. The dulce de ledge is already gone.. I started dipping the coconut cookies in it. And yeah that chimichurri is one of the best bottle versions I have had. Now on to the membrillo, membrillo is quince and in a paste like that pretty common across Latin America. Those of us of Cuban descent like to eat it on bread with white cheese (i guess goat will do) and we also have a version of the paste made with guavas instead of quince. But it is delicious. I wonder if it's something we brought over from Spain.

I don´t know if anyone has already tell you (probably yes), but "porteño" is how we called people in Buenos Aires outside of it. If you are in Tucumán, for example, a porteño is someone that is from Buenos Aires but inside Buenos Aire, well, they are just another argentinean. It doesn´t mean that they are expert in anything, it literally just means they are from there.

  • @sterling_max
    @sterling_max 8 лет назад

Nice video emma, but as an argentine I can tell you that if you liked the brands of tea, membrillo, cookies that were in that box, you'll be amazed about the ones that we actually consume here in Buenos Aires. Regarding the Dulce de leche, the one you tried doesnt even get close to the flavor and texture of classics such as La Serenisima and Chascomus.
    Great work

I think it's a good box for people who want to explore their tastebuds with international goodies. Please don't do these boxes as taste tests unless you've never tried an area before because I think it's better to try food people enjoy from their area than companies putting stuff in boxes.

Ironic that a subscription service named "Try the World" only had shipping within the US, -_-
A shame, seems like such a well-thought out box!!

Porteño is slang for "a native person from Buenos Aires" because Buenos Aires is a port city.

Here we have a picture of what the quince (DULCE DE MEMBRILLO). That they sent you, friends of Argentina, is made from this fruit. Something like a jam, but rigid. In Chile it is also very classic :) www.frutasluisi.eu/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/membrillo.png

Love Emmy, but the contents of the box are hardly representative of Argentine treats. And the brands are a bit random, except maybe for Ines Berton, who is kind of a tea celebrity in Buenos Aires.
Hope you make another Argentine video sometime soon :)

Another idea: you can eat dulce de leche with butter or mix with whipped cream :)
