- Buying an outboard motor requires more information than just horse power size.
Do you know what length outboard motor to buy?
Do you know the length of the boat transom?
We show you how to measure the transom & whether you need a long or short shaft outboard.

Thank for sharing your knowledge. I always had a likeness for boat, I actually bought my first boat and your channel is a blessing. Thank you.
it seems like it would be basic knowledge but nobody I asked ever had the right answer this makes total sense thank you very much for posting this video
You learn something new everyday.
Thank you wally short and informative just what I needed
Thank you j m
I improved my outboard outlook with a small air cooled 4 cycle. The stern rides high and a little push does a lot. It starts easily and never has cooling problems. It rides too soft to slap.
i got 230m small inflatable and I found a nice 9.9 evinrude 2 stroke but long shaft , will it be a big mistake to get it or will be fine??? i mean how much will slow me down 2? 3 mile?
And what is the 18ft shaft length on a Mariner 5hp ?
Thanks mate great info
Thank you sir 👍
Thank you.
Sir, how many inches will I give the transom height of the boat for better performance of this 75hp 2 stroke
Nice information Sir... it’s any matter if longshaft put on a boat instead gonna be short shaft...???? Any problem when it’s run..??? Safety question Sir... 👍👍... thank you very much
Had work done by Wally before, highly recommend him!
Thanks Ian
Hi I was wandering if when measuring alum. boat transom for proper motor height, due you include the center riveted reinforcement as part of the height? or just the bottom beside reinforcement? always tried to find this out as the reinforcement
is around 3/4" Thanks
Hey Ducktruckful, anything that affects the height should be included
Soooo what height should the transoms be for a short or long leg outboard ?
bhutch731 15 or 20 inches, then you raise or lower the outboard to fine tune it as some manufacturers vary the height of the outboard by 2 inches
im just doing a refit, where can you find these stern brackets, new or used
Hi Clyde, by stern bracket you mean the poly outboard pad, we have them at the shop, if you are in Australia?
just bought a 15ft wave rider mustang (small speedboat) and a 40hp 2 stroke, long shaft. engine weighs about 75kg, the transom is cracked. could you give me any advise on what to do? was thinking to reinforce with steel plates and plywood.. boat is fiberglass. thanks in advance.
The only correct way is to replace the timber in between the fibreglass which is rotten causing the cracks in the transom
Replacing the transom is the correct thing to do
Is it ok to run a outboard 20" on a 15" transom ???
If you use a jack plate to lift it then i think so
Sorry bud can't hear you.
You need to measure vertically Wally, not down the transom angle!
Yes correct, but it really doesn't matter.
say 18inch ...
Talk in inches....
This is the USA . We go by inches.
We are an Australian based business Coy! we go by mm
This is the internet.
haha inchs ....whats that
Hey whistle dick he's not in the USA and furthermore the educated in the USA go by both metric and standard FYI
Everyone please excuse my fellow American. We live in a sheltered ego-centric little world in which we think we are the best at everything. God forbid we have a logical, base-10 measuring system. And while I'm, here I want to apologize for our President and remind the world that less than half of use voted for him. That's no excuse mea cuppa.
