Thanks for posting these videos. Just got myself a 19ft Centerconsole boat with a 115 Mercury 2 stroke. The boat was sunk so it was relly cheap, and now the motor runs great, only need an new starter. It had been ordered so maybe on firday i will have it. And this channel is a great inspiration. So thanks again. Sorry for my bad english, i am from Norway.

Hi Stu, your waterpump may be fine! I had a similar problem with my BF30. The flushing muffs can't supply enough water, due to the extra intake under the cavitation plate, Honda recommend a special fitting which delivers water directly into the pump, I find using a barrel of water works well, and saves buying a specialist part!

You're dead right Nick. I put it in a barrel yesterday and it pumped just fine. I'm never convinced a pump isn't working from muffs, they always seem a bit hit and miss.
I have had the same issue...as soon as the whole cavitation plate goes under it starts pumping via the telltale...crisis over

I love videos about the Green Machine! I just bought my first boat today actually, a halfcabin, 5 meters long, so i'm trying to get a hold of an outboard now. I really want a Yamaha 2stroke 50hp, don't ask me why though, think it's because my father used to have one and it worked so well!

A real good choice with a Honda motor Stu, it will give you years of happy out-boarding, I was going to say, putt, putt, putting around but it will do better than that, also a good tip from Paul to re-charge an aerosol can. Nothing like a 'Pale' to get the job done.

I'm just working my way through all of your videos (very informative), I'm busy fitting out a boat so I was particularly interested in the electrical based vids, I've basically wired my boat the same way as you😁. Excellent as usual Stu. I usually use clear silicone or white/black Life Calk when mounting engines depending on the hull color.

Ha! I'll be sure to chat that video out. As Nick mentioned, it turned out to be that the muffs just don't supply enough water, it worked fine in a barrel so that's good news. Getting close now!

It's been fitted to a princess Pilgrim 25 the inboard engine finally died but has been in since 1965 so has done well

Curious about your thoughts or experience on adjustable jack plates as a means to alter the height of the motor? I fish in some shallow spots it'd be nice to get in further to some smaller reaches. Thanks Greg. I don't have any experience with jack plates, but in theory they should give you the best of both worlds. Like anything though I imagine it comes down to installing something of high enough quality to do the job well.
Never knew you guys were so good at mounting 20inch shafts, or lubricating rods.. I did have my suspicions though. Hahaha...

Stu, When you fit an outboard, what is a good height. Should the cavitation plate be in line with the bottom of the hull as a start point. I am checking my motor height and come across this video on the Green Machine,

i ve always been a fan of having 3mm rubber sheet between the motor and hull to minimize vibration and corrosion
Having something like that in there is a good idea. We often use 10mm polyboard when the transom is thin to give a bit of extra strength as well as insulation.
not a bad idea ether. do you know if outboards carry any electrical charge in the alloy casing?
Yes, the casing is ground, so if it contacts the hull at all the entire hull will also be ground. This is pretty much always the case due to the bracket clamps and the bolts going through the casing. The trick is to make sure that every device has a good negative lead back to the battery so the hull isn't the path of least resistance.
I'm so glad I found your videos they are a great tool to help me out with my boat. but one thing I'm nervous about doing the work any suggestions on how to help me out?
Best thing you can do is start with the smaller jobs like changing spark plugs etc until you get your confidence up. Once you get familiar with the basic components as well as basic concepts sure as torquing bolts up tight enough and using the right sealants etc you will start to be ready tackle some of the bigger jobs. I should do a video soon on some of the basic skills you will need.

It was a great deal. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time.
I put a new Tohatsu 9.8 HP on my father’s aluminum boat last year. It gets the boat up on plane nicely and will cruise about 16 MPH until you open it up to wide open throttle, then the bow is pushed down and it begins to plow through the water. Both the boat and motor are short shaft, but dad’s old boat is exactly 15” on the transom. The anti-cavitation plate is 1-1 1/2” below the bottom of the transom. I’ve tried adjusting the angle of the tilt on the motor with little change. Is the motor too low in the water? Thanks and I enjoy your videos.

You know what gauge that piece of aluminum is going from side to side holding the steering and gauges on the dash? My boat is similar, but it has rotted wood from the 60s. I really like the aluminum look, really cool boat very much the same as the one I’m playing with a 62 Crestliner Scout.
I'd say it is about 3mm thick. With that dash I sanded it clean and then sprayed some clear coat from an auto parts store to stop it oxidising.

I have a pontoon boat, can I use the same measuring strategy by pulling a string across the bottom of the tubes and checking the cavitation plate height..thx

I found a alum boat in florida in 1983 ish at scuba show .
The out board motor was mounted infront of center consul making this boat have a tunnel hull 3/4 and a moon deck in rear for fuel tank . The boat was 32’ long 102” wide all alum .. if any info let me know .
I ordered one but had to cancel do to width but now its legal on road

Yep, sure can. It's a pretty good general purpose grease. If you want something a bit less visible then Lanolin spray is a good choice too.
Hi Great vids so cool the way you work and the knowledge, you must have started very young. Bolting the outboard in to out .... Does this matter ?? I thought I might use a security bolt and hide the nut end inside the boat. Cheers Jon

Im thinking about getting a boat, but I am not good at mechanical things. I saw an ad online about a small used boat. The ad said "small sports boat" Without engine and gas lever. Im wondering is it hard to fit an engine to the back of the boat? How do you connect the gas lever to the engine? The gas lever is over by the steeringwheel. And do you need a separate gas tank or is that somehow built into the engine.

What do you call the metal slate that holds the throttle cables? The guy that sold me my engine bf30 didnt have it and i cant find it on hondas website. And what fittings did you use for the motor? It would help alot thanks
I'm not sure what they call that plate, but I have made one up from a piece of stainless steel plate in the past when it has been missing. It is really just a locking plate with some slots drilled into it that the groves in the cable collars can slot into.
What torque did you use to mount the bolts? Is this for all outboards this size? Thank you.
Generally with outboard mounting bolts you have a second locking nut rather than tightening them too much as you will only crush the transom of the boat. This can be as low at 40 ft/lbs.

I have a dilemma. I want to buy a outboard for my 14ft. John boat, and I have 2 choices to buy a 8hp 1991 Suzuki or a 18hp 1967 evinrude. which one do you recommend.?

re: putting sikaflex on the mounting bracket where it meets the outside of the transom.
I'm remounting an 85hp Evinrude on my 16" Glastron trihull as the holes with the lower bolts had slight leak (and were typically under water). Since this is a fiberglass boat, is there any reason to use it in this case? I will, of course, put it in the holes before the mounting bolts are reinstalled.

+Gogle Plus Sucks I don't think it is as important as with an aluminium hull, but it certainly wouldn't hurt from a vibration point of view, particularly if you already have the tube open to do the bolt holes.

Another great video. What about the positioning in terms of sideways and end on angle. Should it be actually offset by an inch or so from the boat centre line then angled in so the prop remains on centre. I understood that helped with the torque of the prob trying to twist the boat.
Can't say I've ever seen a boat with the outboard angled like that. Generally the weight of the driver counter acts the prop torque.

May I thank you for the quality of what you do online. I was enthusing to my GF about how great it is you start a video with a low-key task... then it all blows up with 'fix' diversions, representing the real world of shitty outboard nuts and bolts that won't play ball. Yeah... she's only interested in our boat 'working' .. jeez !
Great stuff love your videos ... is a cavitation plate and anti-ventilation really the same thing? It stops air from getting to the prop. Cavitation is really the "boiling" of water off the prop as it moves from high pressure to low pressure (which is normal I think).

Stu been watching a ton of your videos and i just recently "proper boat " and my new honda outboard its only 14ft boat with 15hp honda but have been fixing boat as transom was completely rotten to the point its just soft so i re done the transom and now want to bolt the engine on so i dont have to lift it on and off every time , is that adhesive you are using called "Soudal T-TREX High Grab Panel Adhesive" ?? if so would that be best stuff to use ? Never worked with boat or engine in my life so need all the help i can get haha i been learning fast and so far everything has worked out fine , lucky the engine is perfect just boat that needs the work

I wish you did this for every motor so we could learn hahah... doing DT40 converting from tiller to remote control on a power renewal from an old 80s dt40 to new... there seems to be some type of kit but wondering if I can bodge something up now after seeing this vid

Not the rest of us hahaha... my mate 'Paul' and I yanked off the old DT40 over the weekend... only too realise that the lads at Suzuki made the gear selector and throttle assembly inside the cover now... because then you can buy their silly conversion kit... we are hoping to do something on the drag link so it fits (they also relocated the screw hole on the handle part of the motor housing so you needed another kit)... another issue you pointed out was the height of the blades to reduce drag/cavitation - do you have any handy ways to increase the motor height by 2 inches or so? Wish you were somewhere close to Bris/Goldy mate you are a wealth of knowledge. I first found you on the vid you did about the renaming of a vessel according to Poseidon's leger and it was one of the more detailed explanations of the process. Thanks again

Thanks mate. I was lucky with this outboard. The boat it was on sunk and the insurance company paid for the owner to buy a brand new one so he was happy to part with this one for next to nothing.

Great luck for you :) I just bought my first boat, an old Caribbean Sandpiper (I've been round boats my whole life but this one is mine) but it's in perfect condition with a brand new transom and floor. The plate recommends an 85hp motor. I've been offered a Suzuki DT115 for next to nothing , is it too big for my boat? Local boat mechanic says it will be fine but I'm not so sure :/ Any advice welcomed.

Hello i see all yours videos and really enjoy. I have a question i have a evinrude 9.9 1982 i don't used for about 2 years now am try to start and is dead i install a new carburetor kit. I check the fuel pump and is good . I replaced the sparks plug , new gas. And is impossible to start i have spark. What You thinking can't be . Thanks
I would try sparking starter fluid in. If it runs for a moment it is fuel. If there is spark but it won't run even with fluid it could be low compression, bad reed valves or even something like the flywheel having slipped ruclips.net/video/eNPfuLXCgys/видео.html

Stu, Again a nice video de mystifying some of the work that a dealer normally does and most boat owners never do .In regards to the height debate. On a 4 stroke I believe this is not an issue, but on 2 strokes how much difference would a higher than suggested engine mount make to the idle settings? I know I can't adjust idle setting on my 2 stroke 50hp engine unless the boat is in the water due to the exhaust back pressure having having an effect on the intake air/fuel volume. A suggestion for a future 'fit and try' product - how about a bit of an expose on the cavitation plate ' whale tails'?
Hey Ron, yes, the exhaust on two stroke motors is very finely tuned, that's for sure. Given the Honda doesn't have an after market cavitation plate on it I'll drive it around for a while to get a feel for it then put one on and see what difference it makes. It would be interesting to see, but apparently they can affect different hulls very differently so my results may not be the same as other boats.
Is there a reason for putting the mounting bolt nuts on the outside of the boat?
Good question. Personally I think it comes down to the ability to get tools in. Access is easier on the outside of the transom so the nuts are usually there to allow ratchets or air tools to get in, but it doesn't really matter, the clamping force is the same.
Any idea how long sikaflex in the transom holes needs to be left before the boat can be put in the water?
Sikaflex recommend 24 hours.
What is the part called that hooks up to the the motor that pushes water so you don’t over heat and mess parts up it hooks to the water hose and hooks to the part that sucks the water in to keep the engine cool
Hello from Finland! I have the same enginge, a BF40. I noticed you did not have to use choke or the idle throttle at all when starting. Mine wont start without choke or at least much idle throttle. It runs great after 2 minute warm up. What could the issue be? Idle is set at about 800rpm.
My BF40 has an automatic choke so it is always getting a bit of extra fuel on start up. It could that the idle jets in your carburettor need a clean, but other factors like compression can also affect cold starting. It may also simply be that it is a bit warmer in Australia too. :)
Dangar Marine thanks for your answer! Its like 31° C here now and still need to use the idle throttle to start it, not necessary choke. The dealer I bought it from 2 months ago did a full service and cleaned the carburettors. When he got the motor it was idling at 2500rpm(!). Maybe they set it down too low because it is not sounding healthy on idle. Will stall some times on idle. I'll try bumping the idle up to 900-950 rpm max. If it doesn't help maybe I'll just live with it. It runs so great otherwise...
I used spray white lithium grease inside the exposed door-latch mechanism of my RV Driver's door and every metal part become covered with rust within a couple weeks.
Do you get cavertations even at low speeds ! Say on a river with a speed limit ? Surely this wouldn't be a issue ?

Looks like an old de Havilland Offshore runabout. My dad had one with a 70 Yamaha on it. Went well. Had some great fishing trips in it.

Generally just four bolts but the sealant used to stop the holes leaking may also be holding it in place.

Yes, it is actually cylinder head temperature (and the water isn't recirculated) and oil pressure.
I have same motor and problems with cooling. Would be happy to see how do you fix the cooling in this outboard... or at least hear how you did it... but great videos. Subscribed :)
In the end I didn't need to do anything. Once the leg was in a drum it started pumping just find. As somebody mentioned in another comment the Hondas don't run too well on muffs due to an extra intake underneath. Does yours pump on the water?

That was the first video i watched when looking solutions to my problem :) Tested it in a barrel, no problem. good stream on tell tale and t-stat worked... Tested it on a lake today and overheat alarm went off... Seems like its overheating only under load... I now suspect too low water pressure is the problem because at idle the water never reaches the t-stat, only when accelerating.
It could just be clogged line but would go ahead get new impeller and keep on one if any good...but still need to unclog tell tale to see waterflow I read it exits thru exhust which is the prop
Stu. that I know of all bolt's nuts should be installed inside transom, not outside. If nuts become loose won't be seeing them, risk motor to deviate away from transom into the ocean. Inside it's a much better place to re torque all nuts from time to time if in need to do it while combo is under way.
Outside is much easier to see and get to on most boats.
hi stu i brought a 1996 johnson 40 hp outboard for my 4.4 mtre quintrex seaman it had less than 50 hours on it for $1900 it has ptt electric start controls is that a good price to pay thank you jeff
50 hours isn't much at all so you should get many years of good service out of it. I've certainly seen much more tired outboards go for the same price.
