    This so happened for me after my first kid was born! My husband and I went vegan and lower waste when we were 16, in 2005, and after our first babe was born, several yrs later, we started buying alll the packaged and convenience vegan junk foods again. When you're a brand new parent, it's hard to take extra time and effort for anything other than your new babe. We have FOUR vegan kids now and we're slowly starting to cut back on our plastic waste again. We've always been avid thrifters and love buying secondhand so that's something!

      I TOTALLY get this! It's crazy how the whole "not having time" or when things get busy thing affects it! That's exactly how I've been feeling! But with work/moving and not with babies but I can only imagine! We've got this though! 💛

    I've hit a wall in my zero waste journey :(. Got down to a really low level of plastic whilst at uni, but i've returned to my parents house for summer, and they live such a wasteful lifestyle. I've tried to encourage them by buying my mum reusable produce bags, steel straws etc but she won't even use them. Its a frustrating set back. I don't have access to bulk bins annoyingly, perfectionism isn't possible until society changes.

      I totally feel ya on this! I also hit a mini rut/wall when I moved back in with my parents! What I'd say, is to focus on your own impact first! The things like your clothing, beauty, and groceries for yourself that don't affect others and then work out from there. It's okay that they create waste (and it's okay to use some of their wasteful items from time to time too!). If we lead by example and share resources/show videos/documentaries/info and such, then they may change a few of their habits in time! My biggest tip is to lead by example and be patient because we all have different set of experiences and exposure to things (including our parents) 💛Hope that helps in anyyyy way! Sending ya so much love. You've got this! It's about our longterm impacts and how we're going forward as best we can with what we have x

      Jennifer Fogarty use what you already have! it's easy to go out and buy new 'sustainable' products but you should really just use what you've already got- don't add to the consumerism. if you have plastic bags, use them. if you have an old beach bag, use it. if youre not buying a lot and are only going a bearable distance, carry it.
      if a plastic bag rips or you have a lot of non-recyclable thin plastic from food packaging (like crisps), you could remould it into a new bag with an iron on a low setting and a piece of fabric (so the plastic doesn't stick to your iron)
      you got this, just know what you really need and what the world needs

    Lowering my waste has definitely been more of a challenge for me than I've seen on media and I feel like that in of itself is discouraging. I gotta remind myself as a single working mom that I simply dont have the time, energy, or money to make all the changes that popular role models do. And with a toddler that is very choosy about her food, that makes things difficult as well, from food waste to packaged foods--not excluding the fact that I just dont have the time or energy to wash cloth diapers every night. But it really helps me to keep a mantra in my head to remind myself every day that I do what I can. And even if you cut back a little bit, it's like a penny, every bit helps. And it shows the people around you that they can make small changes, too, and that makes more of an impact than you'd think.
    Love this video, just gave me the motivation to make my lunch before work again ❤

    It would be great if we made a website and every year we pick 5 large corporations where we encourage them to move to a low waste lifestyle. Then everyone just signs it and sends it through their email. I’ve seen this done with other organizations.

    • @SedonaChristina
      @SedonaChristina  5 лет назад +8

      Totally! I bet that's a thing already! I'm always seeing petitions going around in the zero waste facebook groups i'm in! I definitely recommend checking them out! Maybe I'll even start one for people in the sedonachristina fam 💛ooooh that could be fun! x

    • @kaylag9579
      @kaylag9579 5 лет назад +2

      Sedona Christina yes. I was just thinking if we made a website and focus on 5 large corporations and people refer their friends and family and youtubers and influences to this website and the website hits the some the best change makers countries. Canada, United States, Europe, Australia and everyone just hits them all hard. That would be amazing. For example, Pepsi co, Tyson, mondelez these corporations own all the smaller supermarket corporations. If we all focus on them then maybe change for zero waste but also for agriculture impact and natural products as well can effect this change?

  • @KatieDepriest

    Thank you for being so open and real! To be completely honest, I just got into the zero waste thing- but before that, I was cutting back a LOT on shopping and buying beauty products/makeup. I used to be a shopaholic, and every check I would buy new clothes and makeup to the point where I didn’t even know what I had. I donated most of that already, but I’m still left with a lot of face washes, hair products etc. that I’m trying to use up. I’m 20 years old still living with my parents while I go to school, and they are very wasteful. I also live in Texas, where everyone eats red meat and barbecue super often. Finding other vegans is incredibly difficult, but finding other vegans interested in low waste is even harder. Now I catch myself on zero waste shops falling back into old habits- I think I NEED this new thing to be perfectly zero waste, but as you said it’s more effective to use up what you already have. It’s definitely been a learning curve for me, but sometimes I look around and get really discouraged. Nobody else around me is vegan, or recycling, or trying to minimize waste, so what’s the point? Am I even making a difference on my own? I try to encourage my friends and family but it’s hard to encourage without seeming pushy or judgmental. For right now, all I can do is lead by example and hope people see the positive changes I’m making and want to follow!
    I also want to thank you for mentioning it’s okay to have “waves”, I always feel so bad for having negative thoughts about minimalism and zero waste, but it’s good to know it’s normal. This video is exactly what I needed. Thank you for being such a positive influence and using your platform to be such an incredible human!

    I really needed this! I try so hard to avoid eating meat and dairy but all my parents do is guilt trip me or refuse to respect my choice to not eat meat. Worth noting they don’t believe that climate change is caused by humans so that doesn’t help. They don’t see the value in going to Whole Foods and getting fresh bread in a cotton bag as opposed to buying two loaves from Costco that come in THREE plastic bags. 😓😓

    Certain zero waste habits are now just my new normal, like composting and shampoo bars. But with a baby at home, certain other things I just can’t manage, like cloth diapers and plastic-free groceries. I also see a lot of zero wasters saying, “this may take more money and time but it’s worth it!” And a lot of us with families and strict budgets don’t have those luxuries. The best zero waste habits for me in my life right now are the ones that also save us money- like buying second hand clothes, using reusable cleaning cloths and diy cleaners, refillable water bottles, etc. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration! :)

    I needed this! I fall in and out of love with zero waste all the time. I feel like my small impact is so very little in the grand scheme of everything. I hope you had a great weekend!

    A bit of a late comment, but in Norway we have a very strong love of hiking and our nature. It's become more and more main stream to either bring a bag and pick litter when hiking. Or even going out to the beaches specifically to pick trash. I think it's a very good option to "refresh" one's love for low/zero waste. You're literally in nature, and seeing the change you can make right in front of you.

    I think we can get addicted to the euphoria of big lifestyle changes, especially when there's an ethical and moral implication behind them. Once the novelty wears off, if we're not really in tune with the true purpose of that change, it might not seem worth it anymore. Your insight was spot-on with needing to re-connect with nature - I think that will help! And maybe find some new and exciting low-waste changes to make that will re-kindle your passion :)

    It's always good to stay motivated so thanks for this video! And is there any way you could talk about on how silicones in our personal care products affect the aqautic system? Apparently there are conflicting eveidence and it's been bugging the hell out of me. Thank you for talking about this! I haven’t been apart of this movement for too long, but constantly seeing waste and pollution should be inspiring me, but I find myself alone in this and with everything else going on in life, it’s hard to stay focused and to be constantly developing and getting better. You might have talked about it already, but do you (or anyone) have any tips on how to inspire other people without getting too emotional or intense (which might have a negative impact)?
    I’m so happy to see so many people who are equally as enthusiastic as I am. And I can definitely see a change. Thanks again!

    I have been in a rut too lately when it comes to low waste. I have bought some things I didn’t need, but I’m realizing I’ve already made new habits in the low waste lifestyle which gives me new inspiration and motivation to go forward. Bringing my own grocery bags, buying in bulk or choosing cardboard/paper/metal/glass packaging over plastic are things I started doing automatically after a while and last week when I had to buy a plastic bag I felt weird and wrong. Not to mention the money I saved by going low waste is a big motivation in and of itself, and I’m committed to not let a couple slip ups bring me down.
    In the end it’s the small things that matter, and I think the most important thing to remember when going through a lifestyle change of any kind is that messing up doesn’t mean you need to quit. In other words, one plastic bag doesn’t mean the world is gonna explode and it’ll all be my fault, it just means that I forgot my grocery bags at home!

    One of the best low waste decisions I ever made was cloth diapers for my children. It was SO much cheaper than disposable and really easy. Just need a soaking bucket & it only adds a couple more loads of laundry/week. If you nurse(breastfeed) your baby exclusively for their first year - that's the original zero waste! Both my kids were out of diapers when they were 2 because they wore cloth. yup.

    I do feel alone a lot in this journey. My folks nor anyone at my office job seem to understand. I'm avid recycler (even though the system) isn't perfect and try to be mindful of using reusable things like utensils, dishes, and containers. People around me don't understand neither do they make it easier for me. I can tell I weird them out. My one coworker who I lived with for two months still recycles with his kids (just not as much as when I was there), fill up a bag with plastic bags until I come to take them to a plastic bag bin, and I hope they use less water bottles and once use items.

    I’d really like to see more companies push for biodegradable products. I love being a consumer. I’d be so down to go shopping every week still if I could... but only if the products didn’t negatively affect the earth.

    I took a step back from low waste living last August when my health got really bad and I am still taking it easy. I still try to do as much as I can but sometimes I'm just too tired to be making an effort.

    🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I was just thinking about how the term “ zero waste “ has become something a lot of people see as super extreme & that they could never do it.. so they don’t even take the first step or make any changes in their lives.
    Similar to vegan .. people feel as if that’s extreme but don’t realize that they could just have a few vegan meals a week or one a day and still make a huge impact.

    I went through my rut when I had to buy a new couch. I bought one second hand and my cats ruined it in months , since the person I bought it from had pets too. Tried it with a couch from a house with no pets and same thing happened. Bought a new couch from the store and they were all over it and happy as can be.
    I also go through the packaged food rut too. Sometimes those new vegan products look to good not to try or I just don’t have the time to make something and I will grab it for convenience. It’s hard to find more time when you already feel like you don’t have enough.
    Then I remember - one day at a time and do the best you can do that day.

      Sweet. Any chance you'd be willing to do some videos on how cool Seattle and the Pacific Northwest is(are? grammar?)? Seems like Seattle is the most sustainability-minded city in the country... or at least in the top 5... definitely probably in the top 10... well its not the worst. Maybe a city/place comparison video with Shelbizleee(e? so many e's). Love Seattle's spirit of place. Quote fuel - “Spirit of place! It is for this we travel, to surprise its subtlety; and where it is a strong and dominant angel, that place, seen once, abides entire in the memory with all its own accidents, its habits, its breath, its name.” - Alice Meynell

    Hi! I wanted to say thank you for providing such a great channel. I've really enjoyed hearing about your personal story into veganism and low-waste living... and you were one of the big influences that made me (finally) embrace a vegan lifestyle!! I had wanted to become vegan for a long time but thought that "it wasn't for me". So seeing other youtubers talk about it frankly made it more "real" to me.
    By the way, since you mentioned Extinction Rebellion - another great organization that you could talk about on your channel is Citizens' Climate Lobby. It's a bipartisan grassroots organization that has introduced legislation that is the best first step to solving climate change. Their bill puts a price on carbon emissions and is projected to lower GHG emissions by 40% in the first 12 years, and by 90% by 2050. Funds from the carbon fee would be returned equally to households, which means that low-income families would not be adversely affected by the higher prices. Let me know if you have other questions about the bill as I'd be happy to answer them.
    We need more young people in our organization, and while momentum is growing, any efforts to push the ball further would be hugely helpful. We are laying the groundwork for phasing out fossil fuels, and it's a really exciting time to be a part of the movement. Let me know if you'd like to chat more!

      I use shea butter in a metal tin! or you can re use an old lip balm container and melt half coconut oil and shea and let it harden.

      Coconut oil by itself is quick and easy. Can put it in a little glass jar or little metal tin to dunk your finger in and carry around. Even if it liquifies in heat in your purse it doesnt really matter...it still works.

    I recently started to volunteer for the youth in my church because we meet up very week and somehow I got the part to be in charge of providing meals to the kids if people don’t volunteer to cook meals. Anyway, every week we always eat off of those red plastic cups and plastic spoon and forks, but when I make the food I try to make them finger foods so that they just use a napkin instead of a big hunk of plastic. It’s been bothering me since the church also doesn’t compost or recycle. So idk if anyone has some ideas in mind, but I really need ideas on how I can help cut back on waste that my group produces every week and hopefully help them to become more mindful of the resources they use. 💚

    • @SedonaChristina
      @SedonaChristina  5 лет назад +1

      Totally a valid challenge! I would start by speaking to event/church organizers about their practices and having them connect the importance of what we do for the planet as the underlier to the good that we encourage in the world as a whole! Maybe showing them some documentaries/facts about plastic waste will get them to open their mind as well! But it's a hard one and I'd love to hear other peoples ideas on this too! 💛

      Also if there is actual silverware’s available maybe offer to be the one who washes them? And then just set those out instead of plastic..

    • @Seocute
      @Seocute 5 лет назад

      Kasi Brown thank you! I actually thought about that since I know that it wouldn’t work if I put the burden on them I was just thinking of providing the silverware and just wash it at home. The only issue is the plates and cups because I do have a curbside compost but it’s not enough to fit all of they’re paper plates and food, but I am planning on talking to one of the leaders so thanks for your input!

    I really needed this video 💕 I’ve been trying to eventually become vegan for years now and I go into these phases where I’m so hardcore about it for months at a time and then I fall out... it’s really just about convenience and whenever I’m around family because whenever I do eat meat, I’m just like “I could really live without this. Why am I eating this?” And then I feel like crap about it and go into this cycle. Anyone have any tips?

  • @scruffylookingnerfherder1983
    @scruffylookingnerfherder1983 5 лет назад

    This video is so important! I'm actually going though the same thing but with veganism. I've been vegan just shy of 4 years and I was SO loud and proud and passionate about it up until a few months ago (probably when all those ex vegans started coming out on RUclips now that I think about it). I find myself kind of burnt out on it now though and that scares me. I tell myself that if I'm not so crazy passionate about talking about it that means I'm not a "good vegan" anymore and that I'll probably end up going back to meat and dairy. These are AWFUL intrusive thoughts. If I actually sit down and think about it, yeah, I don't actually want to go back and I really do want to be vegan for life. But I get so down and lost in my intrusive thoughts when I feel myself mellowing out about something that once made me feel so may highs and lows.

    Im slowly getting into low waste living I still live with my parents and my family so it’s hard because everyone is aware of the plastic issue the earth is having but they don’t really seem to do anything about it
    And it’s hard because my family owns a cleaning business so obviously they use plastic trash bags and paper towels and a lot of single use waste but at the same time they do gather a lot of plastic bottles and cans and glass bottles and they take them to a recycling center
    But I’ve talked to them about it and so far they are just reusing grocery bags but that’s about it and I brought my self shampoo bars and conditioner bars since mine had finished and my sister kinda shadows me but i don’t mind it she was interested in using my shampoo bar and conditioner bar and I think imma start buying her her own

      I use Meliora. They are a small company out of Chicago. They carry laundry powder that is vegan & cruelty-free and good for any type of washer. It comes in a cardboard/steel container (you can even opt out of the plastic scoop - I just reuse an old plastic scoop) and the container is reusable because you can also order refills that come in a paper bag. All of their packaging is also recyclable with no plastic. Their website is full disclosure about what they use and their process so if you're at all interested I highly recommend you check it out. I've tried make-at-home laundry soaps without much success so I'm very happy with this option.

    I feel really upset because I had to move back in with my parents (I live in a trailer that in another state). I'm my house everything is super low waste, and here they are just throwing away so much. I also don't have the tools that help me be so low waste and it's just stressful. I'm still doing my best but it's so hard when they just buy plastic and disposables and it's not a big deal to them.
