    What's something you've unexpectedly stopped doing/buying as you've made swaps to minimize your life & help mama earth?! Maybe throw in some ideas that aren't as typically talked about in the low waste space! :)

      I stopped buying straws 2 years ago and I finally got some metal and glass ones! I love drinking with a straw and I was missing it so much. I know I could have just kept drinking without one but it ends up having a positive impact on how much water I drink because I love drinking from them so it's a good thing!
      I recently bought reusable pads and I've been LOVING them so so much. They're cute and colorful and even make me look forward to having my period. I don't even have single use ones anymore :D

      To be honest my bf isnt either. I mean Im not vegan but Im considering it and am cutting down. Whereas he just buys so much junk food that has plastic wrapping and doesnt think he can change anything by removing his support to it. He isnt willing to give up all the food to be zero waste whereas Im doing it (failing a bit too since I can only do it when Im not living with my parents, but as soon as summer comes I have no control over all the plastic coming in the house) so yeah I get mad but we have other things in comon and we love eachother even though we dont agree. It wasn't even planned or anything-- we always take turns choosing what to watch & I chose that. He loves the changes it's made in his health & overall well being.

    My biggest change, especially the last 8ish months, is using products up. Even when I have the urge to declutter something I just use it up, or find another way of using it up. The two biggest areas have been stationary and beauty.
    Most A5 notebooks and spare pens went to work instead of getting work to buy them for me and small notepads/notebooks get used to plan shopping lists.
    I brought a shampoo bar, which I ended up not liking (and went back to the half bottle I had sitting in the cupboard...) but because it was expensive I didn't know what to do with the bar. After about 4 months of it sitting in a draw, realised I should just use it up as a body soap, it didn't last long because it was really soft but it's out of my life and didn't get wasted and I feel so much better now. I have about 4 products that will be finished by the end of the year and will only need to replace one (shampoo) because I already have alternatives or extras for the others.
    It's been really satisfying using items up and getting to buy products I actually like.

    • @PhiliH88
      @PhiliH88 4 года назад +9

      Jess Lewis - ditto! I didn’t think I had that many ‘extras’ lying around... yet my concentrated effort to use up what I have has lasted me over a year in some products! Hand moisturiser and body scrubs are the only things I haven’t gotten totally through now, but almost there. Everything else is only bought when I need it now. Made such a difference!

    • @jesslewis7851

      @@PhiliH88 Yes me to! Omgosh the amount of hand moisturises I have been gifted over the years, they are always in gift packs! I've been spending the last 5 months using stuff up so I feel you on this. A lot of people getting into minimalism and being eco friendly are making the mistake of actually buying more stuff and wasting what they already had.
      Even if you have beauty products that are not in sync with your new lifestyle, it does not make sense to throw them away. They'll end up in the garbage anyway and you've been using them for forever so why not just use them up and then switch to other things. I think a lot of youtubers making content don't talk about this.

    'Everyone's needs are different' is important to remember. I try to limit waste wherever I can, but as someone with a chronic, life threatening illness all the prescriptions I need to liver come with DISGUSTING amounts of plastic and cardboard and dye. But without those things I can't live. Minimal waste is not in my cards, sadly.

      I totally feel ya!! I ALWAYS tell people not to worry about their medical waste, as it’s totally out of their control! • @allgood7088
      @allgood7088 4 года назад +6

      I think that's different though - minimalism is about not using to excess. If it's keeping you alive - then it's not excessive! If everyone reduced their plastic and only overused medical waste - the world would still be soooo much better off. You can still be minimal waste with your other items!! If you reduce waste in other areas of your life - you still might be using less plastic than some other people who just dont think about waste at all

      I’ve started doing something similar. If it’s not really for me or if I don’t use it in 30 days, I donate it. 9/10 times it’s toiletries (body lotions, hand creams, body sprays, etc), I’m just very particular with scents and ingredients BUT lots of shelters ask for personal care items. So why not have it go to use? SERIOUSLY. Check out some of the local shelters in your area and see what they are accepting for donations...might be worth checking it out.

    I think the most important thing I've done is reduce my usage of paper and plastic in general. I still record music on cassettes because I like having physical copies of my music but small stuff like repurposing the labels I didn't use for labeling other things has been a surprisingly big help. I've also buying larger containers and putting drinks in glasses instead of single use bottles. The extra step is worth it for the knowledge of making a positive impact. I try to buy glass or metal containers if possible, because then I can reuse them for longer than I can reuse plastic containers. But I've been wanting to say this all this time: Love how accessible you make sustainability, you show that it's not about being perfect but about having the right intention and doing what fits in your life, which works so much better than being dogmatic and obliging yourself to be 100% zero waste even if you have to bend yourself into impossible shapes to get it done. I have given up so many things and honestly I don’t miss any of them. Life is simpler using less.
    Let’s see... traded half of my TP for family cloth you can guess when TP is still used. Menstrual cup instead of tampons. I will shortly have no soap other than Dr Bronners 18 use liquid soap (refillable at my local grocer). Shampoo is now also Dr Bronners, conditioner is now an ACV rinse. I will soon have no surface cleansers and will be moving over to the orange peel vinegar thing but mostly a hot washcloth works. I haven’t had paper towels for 2!years, I have reusable squares of flannel instead.
    Also, amazingly, even with all my rags and stuff I don’t use THE DRYER! I’ve been hang/line drying my laundry for nigh on a decade now. No dryer sheet can replicate the glorious smell of wind dried laundry.
    Oh and the biggest thing so far, all animal foods, and byproducts. As a teen I raised market sheep for FFA projects, and my grandpa raised beef cattle. I had very little issue with this and honestly barely thought twice about the animals, now I’m vegan. This always surprises me.

    "I wish I lived in Europe where transportation is a lot easier to and from and between countries" XD traveling by train in Europe is not an easy thing, and usually a lot more expensive than flying. I'm Belgian and I live just across the border in the Netherlands, public transportation to my hometown: 4,5 hours, by car: 1,5 hours, since it's only 100km!
    Part of the reason why traveling by train in Europe is actually rather difficult and expensive is because each country has their own rail system, and different countries actually have different widths of tracks, meaning that the same train cannot ride from one country to another. Usually that means needing to switch trains frequently, taking more expensive trains on special lines, or needing to take a bus in between different trains. Unfortunately there are no real plans so far to change this. I would really like to see more night trains and long-distance trajectories though, I took the transsiberian train two summers ago and it was a lot of fun just being on the train for days at a time...

    Finland is mostly covered in lakes, forests and fields of barley, oat, wheat and rye. Wood (and paper) is one important industry to finns - yet there is a bidet shower in most finnish toilets (both public and private). Not having one is really rare nowadays. Even en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bidet_shower mentions finns. :)

    Half of my family that I'm with is in the UK, while the other half of my family is in the USA and we barely fly. It's both of evorment reasons and money reasons. During the years that I have been living in the UK, there's so many options to travel to the other part of the city/country or another city/town that doesn't involve traveling by airplane like trains/trams/buses/subway/rent-a-bike.

    i used to love makeup and kind of feel like i had to wear it to feel at my best, but now i only put it on maybe once or twice a week! and i used to have lots of colourful "special occasion" makeup that would almost never get used and would expire long before i could even use up half of it, i don't do this anymore and stick to just a few favorite products that i use almost every time i put makeup on. also, nailpolish is something i too chose to quit just a short while ago after using up my last bottle!

    Also, if anyone really can't stand using a shampoo or conditioner that isn't already liquid, look into how to make liquid soap from bar soap and put it in your own reusable bottle. It's a pretty easy process. You may want to consider a sturdy, reusable plastic bottle or a stainless steel bottle, as glass can be very slippery in the shower.

    The nail polish - I stopped using it because I drew a lot and it often left marks on my drawings when I swiped away eraser pieces, as well as being practically plastic for your nails.
    I'm enjoying reusable pads, as they are much more breathable than disposable pads, and the routine of hand washing and line drying them in the evening doesn't bother me. (When I change one during the day, I first rinse most of the blood off under the sink, and then put it in a bucket of water or a ziplock bag to wait until the evening) I still have some disposable pads, and biodegradable pads for going to places with outhouses.
    I have started to use the bidet more, for number 1 also, out of comfort. I still use toilet paper for drying, because our downstairs toilet doesn't have enough nails for a lot of towels. My grandma had "butt towels" for each person in her toilet which I'm starting to relate to now. 😂
    I only wear makeup for special occasions too. A lot of my friends at the moment are men though, and don't wear makeup, so I don't feel the urge to wear it often.
    The flying one is hard. I try to avoid it now when ever possible. Last summer I got a job in Greenland which I really needed, and the cargo shipping company didn't agree to take me onboard, so I booked flights from Denmark onwards. I want to try the boat/ship route again next year or the year after that when I attempt to go back. And the return is a task too, if the company doesn't agree to paying for other than flights. (This year, I paid for going and the company paid for my trip home.) I have to keep in mind how much I'm actually making while I'm there, to make sure the commute is not too expensive. I should book a tax office appointment to figure out if I will be getting tax returns from Denmark. I'm nervous because I think I should be entitled to them and I could really use the money, but in the Greenlandic tax office, we had a serious language barrier. So I just hope all my paper work is ok and my worker status on paper has been correct. 🙈 TLDR; it's not as simple as to just "stop flying".

    I do feel the same about flying. I love travelling, but I find it really hard to travel by plane and I'm trying to look for some alternatives for travelling especially inside Europe. But, the majority of my family lives on the other side of the world (Asia). Since, my grandpa and grandma are old, I'd love to see them as regurarly as I could which is in my case like once in 2 years. So flying is definitely something I find really hard to give up to. 💔 I'm not a huge fan of travelling by car, so I prefer walking, riding a bike or taking public transportation. I barely drive a car, I only do it when it's urgent. Last but not least, I give up consuming animal products. I've been vegan for 2 years now YAY! Okay, last I no longer buy fast fashion items. I'm on my low buy journey and trying to only buy what I need 2nd hand /a sustainable brands. Thank you for being such an incredible inspiration for me. ❤

    I don't really believe in giving up flying as there are no true alternatives to it. I'm vegan, I barely purchase anything with plastic, 90% of the non-food items I buy are used, I don't own a car and try to bike as much as possible; my carbon footprint is already lower than that of so many people with similar lifestyles to mine. All the things I've given up have alternatives, flying doesn't, and travelling is too important to me to just give up. That being said, I do try to go for longer trips so I can visit more places by train and thus reduce the amount of flights I take, and I opt for airlines that have some sort of tax to make up for their emissions. It's not perfect, but I don't really see any alternatives. I don't think I should give up something that is so important to me when I'm already doing so much

    I've been looking into bidets (and also some gadgets that you attach to your current toilet that act as a bidet)... Could you please give us a recommendation, if you get a moment? Thanks, as always, for all your reviews on sustainable products. All of the information/chats you give are super helpful.

      I’m personally going with Tushy! Since I’ve heard really great things from friends! 💛
