A supercut of Materwelonz's Outer Wilds playthrough. Honestly one of my favourite runs of this game, so many intresting things noted and she does constantly explain her thoughts on all of the things ::)
Note that this playthrough was played around 3 years ago, so there are some intresting bugs and stuff that doesn't exist in the current version.

Have I watched various Outer Wilds playthroughs like 50 times? Yes. Will I watch another one? Also yes.
Same ❤
Love this playthrough. Welonz is the only person (i can remember) who noticed one of my favorite pointless details in the game; The Nomai Children have noticeably different, much worse handwriting than the adults. And especially in Solanum's case, it's sweet (and heartbreaking) to see Her handwriting get better at different points in her life, from the Ember Twin, to her time in the Hanging City, and of course Her final resting place. We get to watch her grow up, from something like 200,000 years after her death, all through her handwriting and the things she says. And remembering that always makes me a little emotional
Yeah she one of few who understand and care about the nomai,
My friend noticed it and I never realised. Amazing detail
Ha. I love that she took a picture with Solanum. There should have been an achievement for that lol.
You are só right, it should 😢
For anyone wondering why the number of the probe that found the eye of the Universe at: 1:10:16 is just 9.354:
The developers changed this number with the patch 1.0.7 on the 18th of June 2020 to 9.318.054 following some criticism by the players.
In their own words from the patch-notes:
"Increased the plausibility of a certain number on Giant's Deep"
What were the players criticising? I mean, the Eye could have been found on the 10th cycle, or even the 3rd.
@@Scion141
It could have, there was a chance for that.
But that chance was infinitesimally small.
While possible, the more probable out-come was the one we got, that being nearly 9 1/2 million tries.
That is what players criticised, that only the 9 1/2 thousand tries was too lucky, which narratively diminished the tone.
@@voidjockey82especially when it’s technically inconsequential to any living being how long the time loop had been going on.
@@knightsolaire5351 but making it 9 million adds a lot more weight to the discovery.
the only problem with that is it opens up a brand new plot hole in the experiences of gabbro and the player of being likely within the first hundred loops.
Oh wow, this must have been a really early playthrough of the game. The probe tracking module still only displays around 9000 probes launched, not 9000000.
nah it said 900000 she just read it wrong lol
@@captianshredder1:10:11 ???
1:21:53 And look at the entrance to the Black Hole Forge control room
Yeah, the description says it's from 3 years before the upload date of the supercut, so it's probably the earliest release version of the game. You can see some other differences too: there's no recess to hide from the sand in on the Ash Twin Warp Tower, and the visual effect for the Ash Twin activating is different (just a purple tinge, no geometric patterns).
@@DragonaxFilmsa lot of differences, text in a few, arguably less important Nomai places, translator/reading animations, probably tons of bugs and other stufd
Man, she's really got some unique insights. The Vessel being brain-shaped... I never even thought of that. And she's able to keep track of everyone! lol
god she's *so* excited to meet Solanum. This is so wholesome
I love how she started doing the quantum stuff the easy way by taking a picture and then forgets and starts shooting her scout to make it harder by the end
Oh my god, I just love her ending statement and how she shows her emotions there. Outer Wilds is one of the few games that managed to make me cry and I love to see another person have that same beautiful experience.
I can't believe she accidentally entered the Ash Twin Project without even realizing it! It's crazy because there's so much information given there that you have to learn from other places, like the Sun Station - it basically sums up all the stuff you could learn from other places. Very interesting to see that!
I did the same thing on my first playthrough! Fortunately, since I lacked the context to really understand any of it, I realized I was in over my head and just left. I ended up pretty much forgetting about it until I got there the "normal" route, and getting a nice "oh THAT'S what that was!" moment out of it. I think it's a real testament to how beautifully they executed this non-linear storytelling that an accident like that only ended up enhancing my experience.
I've seen three people do that, it's insane !
It was tender and poetic that she took the "you" stone from Solanum as a keepsake to remember her by, then decided to give it back to Solanum's corpse, not knowing it was the same person.
“Hey we’re improving!”
Immediately dies after forgetting to put on suit 😂
Oh this one was so beautiful. Not many players remember characters' names or really empathise with them the way this streamer did. I shed a few sympathy tears at the end alongside them too.
My favorite solanum interaction. I had never even thought of bringing the stones back, and then leaving it where she did.
Cracking the hell up at the accidental badass moment when she falls off the cliff at 43:42 and continues to try to save herself, then realizes it is hopeless and resigns herself to certain oblivion so she says "...whatever." in the face of death via a black hole. badass.
Welonz is one of my favorite gamers on RUclips! She's always super thorough and takes consideration of every part of a story when she plays. Thanks for putting in so much hard work!
except that one scene on the orbital probe cannon, but gauging from this comment section, we don't really talk about that..
The quick maths impressed me. 1:44:08
The clumsy landings and crashings with a 'that'll do' gives me such nostalgia 😅
There's one quote that always comes to my mind when i watch people's reaction to the end of Outer Wilds, a quote the SCP Wiki (a creative writing community with roots in the horror genre but encompassing much more today):
"You don't get to pick the ending of the story. [...] But you do get to pick how you decide to take it. You can sit down and weep that the old stories you grew to love are gone…. or you can smile and move on to the next shelf."
As in that SCP Article the World has to make room for the next story, so does the Universe have to make room for the next Universe in Outer Wilds. A Universe full of new and exciting stories - that we might get to see one day, or we might not. But it's still important that we accept the need to let something new emerge.
I'm totally addicted to those Outer Wilds playthrough. Thanks so much for putting those supercuts together and preventing me from wasting 15h of my life every time.
This was one of the best ones I've seen. She's so inquisitive and was able to put together a lot of things real quick
Nobody ever said she was anything but very smart.
And if they did, they're wrong.
Welonz did such a great playthrough of the game. They're so articulate, and you can tell just how much they appreciated the game by the end of it. Thank you for creating this supercut. Getting to watch others play the game is the only way I can relive this incredible experience.
And thank you again for the amount of hours you’ve put into making this
I live on these supercuts, thanks for this Eelis!
Bruuuh when she left the energy lab without trying the black and white holes made me cry in frustration😢
It's hilarious that she figured out Quantum Entanglement without realizing it. Also, after watching Pointcrow's playthrough, seeing someone actually make an effort to land the ship properly is a welcome change of pace xD
Hell yes, we gettin to the Great Old Ones now
This the best Playthrough she care about the nomai and understand the story also her voice is relaxing
I think this is my favourite playthrough I watched. I like a lot of the things she noticed and her thoughts. And I, too, cried at the end. It feels nice to see someone else react that way, most playthroughs seem to end a lot more... collected?
Going through a pretty rough season of life now, and my norm had settled into a dull ache of despair for… what feels like has been a very long time. I somehow randomly landed on your video… and wept with you at the end, and it was really… nice… to feel and cry in the light of knowing hope and beauty *do* exist and will continue to. Might sound like an odd thing to thank one but yeah… cheers to you fellow traveler and conscious observer.
1:16:47 Did the quantum moon go into the sun while orbiting the hourglass twins? Because there was orange not blue.
how would that make a difference? if the sun is supernova, there's no orange left.. 🤷
@@StayFractalesque Exactly, I'm saying I don't think it was a supernova, the moon just floated into the sun, the same way the interloper does, because the flash was orange, not blue and the music didn't play.
The moment in the high energy lab when everything is available ans she just walks away because she did not see the black and white home cores at the wall next to her... and then she just stumples into the ash twin project XD
WOW v1.0.1..... thats an early version how old is this playthrough? Jun 3, 2019!? nice. interesting to see the changes between final version and practically release
Is that why it was only probe 9000 sonething?
@@AlfaWolf777 Yeah, I actually played on the patch with that number. They increased it to 9 million by just adding a few digits in the middle
Sun station was also missing some info. I did not know the info about its state was added later.
if I had a penny for every time I saw someone call esker eskell, I would have two pennies which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice
Thank you! Welonz's playthrough is my favourite by far, with this I'll have a (relatively) easily digestible video to send people!
Watched it Welonz' channel too. Always a pleasure, she's clever in those kind of games.
Welonz is such a gem!
I do really love how they talk out their thoughts. Perfect for playthroughs.
Thank you for this new Supercut ! :D
I have a problem
This game is an incredible experience and to see peoples reaction to it for the first time and their appreciation of this work of art is profoundly enjoyable.
There are worse things to be addicted to
Needs more cowbell.
Thank you for your supercuts, they're always so handy!! 💚
Coming back to watching OW playthroughs afer a while. Need my emotional checks
Your description for Materwelonz channel is broken, just fyi
I love Materwelonz!
I never noticed that the actual number of tries it takes for the probe to find the eye was actually random. Her probe found it crazy early
Seriously, I thought it was a fixed number for everyone, somewhere past 9 millions, the Wikia says so too.
Could it be a bug?
@@THExRISER If I remember correctly, they changed the number on a later patch (it used to be a lot lower), so her playthrough must've been before that.
@@jardelelias5625 Yeah that could be it.
@@silverfoxeater Oh that explains, thank you.
Yeah, the game was patched to go from OVER 9,000!!! to OVER 9,000,000!!!
Also, I think the game counts how many loops you go through and adds it to the number of loops the project has already been through to reach the number you find at the module in Giant's Deep's core. So it always starts at the base number and dynamically keeps track of how often you restart a loop for maximum accuracy. Maxccuracy.
1:46:46 this is fine
This let's play must be old, it's and very old version of the game
what makes you say that?
This is version 1.0.1. There are (substantial) differences in the Nomai text compared to the current version, as well as numerous other changes. An obvious example of this is that the number of probes launched is in the thousands, not the millions.
@@tonogram exactly that's the main one
1:36:20 oof that hurt to watch.
what caused the weird end loop animation at 1:24:10 ?
it happened again at 1:41:55. it must have to do with not dying when the loop end triggers?
I believe the first animation for when you get far enough away from the nova you don't actually burn up in a fiery death, instead freezing to death in space from the lack of a sun (you get an achievement for that too). The second I think is an instance of you not actually dying from the nova again but instead survive inside of the supernova proof Ash Twin Project, but it activates _because_ of the nova and it sends you back in time anyway. I think Materwelonz is playing an old version here, in newer patches a new animation has replaced the second instance with more of a Nomai architecture type pattern indicating that it's the Ash Twin Project sending you back, not you dying.
@@gamerzgod123 that makes sense, I thought it might be an old version because I didn't recognize that animation, compared to the one you'd see in the dlc for instance. I appreciate all of the details you shared with me, I didn't know you could freeze to death in space, let alone there was an achievement for it lol
luv u Eelis :)
1:10:20 wait what? why is it showing the wrong number for the probe?
This is before they changed the number to a more reasonable one in a patch
1:37:30 haha that's cheating

Man, I thought Atrioc was bad but this takes the cake
Why do you write mean comments for no reason?
@@cleverman383 that’s a great question. I gave it some thought, and I’ve figured out it’s because of two different things. One is the frustration I feel when watching this which disappoints me because I usually love watching people play outer wilds, and therefore I express it in a toxic way which I don’t believe is harmful for anyone. The other reason is that I meant it in a somewhat joking/ribbing way (not all of it, as explained above).
@@StoryAndSong1 Thanks for the thoughtful response! What were you hoping to find in this video that frustrated you and disappointed you when you didn't find it?
@@cleverman383 well I really just wanted to see someone enjoy outer wilds in the same way that I did, and somewhat experience that again through them. I think in my mind the experience is ruined when stuff like this happens.
