  • In this part 2 episode I'll be finishing up the Ford 8.8 rear with Caltracs install for my V8 S10 build. To start off I will be replacing the factory leaf spring bushings with an alternative to having a press method with new parts from Calvert Racing and also putting on the rest of the Caltrac traction bar pieces on the truck. In this video I will also cover the rear diff, various part numbers for items used, and also touch base on the rear shocks I'll be using for my project. This video contains lots of information and gives a peak at the suspension setup for this budget minded S10 street/strip build.

      Thank you! Glad you were to able to find something helpful in the videos I've put out so far. I'm actually in the eastern panhandle so you're practically next door. I hope to have some more content out soon on my truck build, best of luck with your build! 👍

    How do you like this setup? I'm installing the same on my 88 s15, I wonder about the bottom shock mount though how it's not sandwiched, how is your's holding up?

    Hey this is Paul love your show learned a lot but I got some more questions I've got the 8.8 rear end in is there anyway we can get brake kits with slotted and drilled and Chevrolet S10 bolt pattern still there is a true like to know about that thanks

      Hi if I understand your question correctly, yes you can get drill the axles for the chevy bolt pattern and I believe they even may make replacement axle already with the chevy bolt pattern. Hopefully that's what you were wanting to know

    Just wondering what that part # of that friction modifier is?????

    • @304customsgarage
      @304customsgarage  2 года назад +1

      That's a good question I've saw both XL-3 and XG-3. When I go this I just went to the local Ford and ask for the friction modifier, I'll check the bottle to see if any other numbers are on it.

    Did the cal trac base come with the shock mount provision? What was the part number for the shocks? thanks

      Yes they do have the shock mount locations. These comp engineering shocks are c2720 on the rear.

      @@304customsgarage Thanks for the fast reply. I wonder if there is any advantage to the calvert split leaf mono springs?

    • @304customsgarage
      @304customsgarage  Год назад +1

      I don't know alot about those other than what I read supposedly lighter and helps with shock absorbtion, rear suspension (getting planted), etc. I would definitely consider using them in the future myself. In my opinion I think they're are more pros than cons to them. Are you planning to use them?

      @@304customsgarage I think I am going to try using just the 2 factory springs on each side first. Im told the stock springs minus the overload leaf works pretty darn well. I am in the process of building the 8.8 this week. I bought my truck with a V8 already installed but thats it. Has a mild 350 in it with a TH350 trans. I need to beef up the rear ( 8.8) do some kind of x-brace to firm up the frame, install bump steer on front and anti roll bar & Caltracs on rear. I did get a brand new in the box set of the low profile caltracs with the truck when I bought it. Once all that is done I have a 406 with AFR heads I plan to install in it. Have you built some kind of X brace for yours yet?

    • @304customsgarage
      @304customsgarage  Год назад +2

      Yeah I'm going to rock the stock spring no helper leaf it should work as we intended it too. I have not got an x brace yet but it's considered in future mods. I do have a bump steer kit I got for the truck also just haven't put it on yet. As for the anti roll bar (like the x brace/ maybe 10pt cage also) im at a point where I contemplate doing it now while it's semi apart, wait till later, or keep it street a cruiser. For this motor I had alot of the stuff already from years ago so I kinda just pieced it together and changed a few things to make it something to toy around with. It seems the truck has already left the budget cruiser build idea and I'm already starting to plan for the future of it and it's not even on the road yet. The 406 with AFR heads will make a real nice motor! I may bump up the cubes to the 400's myself for the next one.

    what part number for the caltracs did u use?

    • @304customsgarage
      @304customsgarage  Год назад +1

      The one I have are the 3700 or standard ones that have 2 spots to adjust the bars. They make a low profile one also with one less hole for adjustment and I believe that is the 3701 version

  • @wreckanchor
    @wreckanchor Год назад +1

    Me again. Question about the Caltracs and the Ford 8.8.. I think I have the same Caltrac's (3701) low profile units. My question is what U-bolts did you use ? And did they line up with the holes in the Caltracs base or did you have to message the holes in the Caltracs? I know the 8.8 is a 3 inch tube rear & the S10 I think is slightly smaller? Like 2 7/8" or something like that.

    • @304customsgarage
      @304customsgarage  Год назад +2

      I got the calvert racing u bolts off summit racing. Think they were 3.25 inch and like 7 inch long. They did fit in the holes but I did have mess (wiggle, squeeze,etc) with them to get both sides in.

      @@304customsgarage thank you for the reply. I ordered some from Calvert. Looking at your videos has helped me a ton. I am thinking the TRZ anti roll bar kit I have bought is NOT going to work with the stock tank. It looks like the tank is to far rearward. Dang it... Guess I will be installing a fuel cell in the bed.

    • @304customsgarage
      @304customsgarage  Год назад +1

      I have a fuel cell that came with another project I'll have on the channel in the future I really considered using for this. If I have problems with the factory tank and draw tube setup on this s10 I will be switching to the fuel cell. I may get an anti roll bar myself while its still semi apart. Thanks for the tip on the fuel tank and anti roll bar something to consider if I decide to do it now or wait.

      @@304customsgarage I just got my rear installed with the 2 inch drop blocks with 3 degree pinion angle built into the blocks with the low profile Caltracs today. With the 8.8 Explorer rear cut down and using 2 short side axels the 8.8 rear is 56.5 inches total width and the factory rear was 54 inches width. I have decided to try the truck with just the 2 leaf springs and Caltracs first before I decide to install the anti roll bar kit. So I am going to retain the stock fuel tank for now and see how the truck hooks. I will let you know how it goes.
