      +MadSnake123 I think Superman as a simple superhero ist boring. With his set of powers he can basically overcome any foe and physical obstacle. The moral and psychological issues that can come from such an overpowered character on the other hand can make for great stories, as presented here. This makes it all the more sad, that we have a big CG Brawl to look forward to in the Batman v Superman movie.

      +MadSnake123 Sorry to disagree but I personally think Superman is the least interesting hero and yes he has had great comics such as Red Son and Grant Morrison's but it is usually because it is an elseworld tale which I personally don't count as part of Superman because they changed him in away that would never be in normal continuity just like Batman Gotham By Gaslight and Batman Beyond

    • @MadSnake123

      Fabio Barresi Fair point, most Superman stories are what ifs...however i have read some great Superman stories that are canon, i remember the saga against Dominus, it was quite good, War of the Supermen was good as well, Superman/Doomsday Hunter/Prey, etc, etc, i mean there are great Superman stories everywhere...is just that they are not as popular as the What If comics.

    • @fabiobarresi5192

      I guess at the end of the day (to me) Superman is one of the least interesting super hero but that doesn't mean he isn't interesting at all because all comics in general are just usually great

    This video was definitely needed. It's for the people who are negative and close-minded toward the character as well as for those who don't understand the character of Superman who want to learn more about him. I'm glad WatchMojo showed appreciation for Superman.

      JazzyZenBrotha -- It bothers me when people say "Superman is boring" or "Superman is too perfect" or "I can't relate to Superman" and that's all what their argument is. If half of Superman's haters read two or three of these brilliant stories, they would definitely find something that they like and can identify with. A good portion of his haters have no idea who this character truly is, and why he's so important to comic book lore.

      +KeijiMaeda86 been meaning to read unchained, but Doomed is a convoluted mess that require Geoff Johns to come in to reboot the character with the much better Men of Tomorrow. And from the looks of it he'll have to do it again since Before Truth focuses too much on Superman's power and not the person himself.

    MOS was such an underrated & unfairly bashed film in 2013.For me, between IM3/Thor/MOS, MOS was the better of the two. I actually enjoyed it & understood more of the plot upon rewatch
    One has a horrendous disappointing plot twist that i was about to walk out literally (idc abt one-shot mandarin) u fked up & wasted ben kingsley"s talent in the film. Another is having an underwhelming undeveloped villain like malekeith trying to end the world with convergence event to consume the universe altogether & the avengers are unpresent or busy at such a pivotal time & taking a subway train rain,yeah.....wtf. Just send two fight jets to stop him,lel..
    Else,A Bunch of renegade Kryptonian insurgent forces trying to terraform the planet and a general who though he lose everything & tries to force Superman to kill him & succeeded. Think i pick MOS ,sure its a flawed movie,so does any other Marvel films to date. BVS? i hope it it does well, ppl are still bitching abt recent new trailer.

      +Cloud Sodding Strife It was a good movie, but it just wasn't true to the characters as many know them. I think they went way out in left field and skimmed over his formative years, which really just felt weird for a reboot. Plus, they couldn't call it Superman? It's like they were ashamed of it or something...

    • @ManOfStamp38
      @ManOfStamp38 8 лет назад +11

      +Cerebral they didn't call it superman because it wasn't superman it was Clark learning to be superman

    • @supermovies4625
      @supermovies4625 8 лет назад +9

      +Cerebral Man of Steel is another name for Superman. The movie was about Superman's origins so why not. It does stay true to the comics. Read Birthright, New 52, Earth One, Superman #22, Secret Origin and Action Comics #1. The only things that were different, was Jonathan Kent and Lois Lane know that Clark Kent is Superman when they first met.

    • @aniruddhmurthy6970
      @aniruddhmurthy6970 8 лет назад +6

      +Cerebral they didn't call him Superman, because they didn't want to force it for the sake of character name. They wanted to bring the name Superman realistically, not just because they are making a movie about it

    • @mrsimmons9451
      @mrsimmons9451 8 лет назад

      +KeijiMaeda86 no it is not, if it would be a superman story then it would have his name in the title and the entire book would revolve around him. Kingdom come doesn't have superman in the title and it focuses on several characters and their stories throughout so it counts as a DC as a whole story.

    • @theryumancer9639

    • @mallorycarll6280

      JavonS83 -- Kingdom Come and All Star Superman will tug at your heart strings. IMO, All Star Superman could be one of the greatest comic books ever written or it is up there on that very short list.
      Superman is at his best when you truly see his internal struggles of self-identity, purpose in life, good vs wrong, and his propensity to care too much. His powers are like the icing on the cake. It's his personal emotional crisises and desire to instill hope on Earth that make him so intriguing and vastly misunderstood. He's not a God. He's not perfect.

    • @thebaronlouis8619
      @thebaronlouis8619 8 лет назад +5

      ***** Goku loses fights a lot more than Superman. Superman can beat pretty much anyone unless they use Kryptonite or magic, and even then it usually just slows him down. Goku gets help from other warriors, the spirit bomb, achieving new Super Saiyan forms, etc. and even then the fights are pretty close. The main issue of Dragon Ball isn't overpowering the characters, it's using the stupid excuse of "he was just holding back" to make the fights last for hours when they should have lasted minutes.

    • @ChadBenjamin
      @ChadBenjamin 8 лет назад +8

      Agatharu Kryptonus Superman can't beat Darkseid, Brainiac or Doomsday most of the time. And he also required the help of the Justice League on multiple different occasions.

    All Star Superman is really all you need. Grant shows you how and who Superman really is. How he loves his parents and how important they are to him. His love for Lois Lane. How he will help everyone before himself. The love and respect he has for all of life. The top three are better what if stories about Superman and good stories, but if you want the story of who and what Superman is all about then All Star Superman is the one.

    "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?" showcases Superman perfectly. It show why he does what he does and why it is so important. It points exactly to why he is different from other heroes and why he needs to hold himself to the standard that he does. Honestly, it should be the first thing anyone working on Superman should be required to read because it show the essence of Superman. Something that has been sorely lacking from him in much of the media for quite a while.

    The greatest Superman actor is Christopher Reeve. Henry Cavill, George Reeves, Tom Welling, Tim Daly and George Newbern are still great though.

    • @cvzanikos1
      @cvzanikos1 8 лет назад +4

      For me Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill are equally the ever in their own time. If I had to pick I'd say Henry Cavill is on top because he fits the role better. He's got the look and the acting down. Whereas Reeve has the look from the neck up. Cavill is shorter but try saying that with a straight face when picturing Michael Keaton lol

    All-Star Superman was a fantastic read. A great "What-If" story that's both fun and emotional, especially towards the end. I really wish they did sequel to the story, seeing that the story ends on such a cliffhanger.
    I have yet to read "Red Son", I have the book, but I haven't read it yet. But it's premise has some great potential.

    Good list but as a life long superman geek I'd like to make a few suggestions for those of you who want to give the character a shot:
    1. The world of new krypton 12 part by Robenson and Rucka....the best superman story I've ever read
    2. Action 775 by joe kelley, IMO it is superior to kingdom come while being thematically similar.
    3. superman 418 by cary bates and 247 by maggin. Both address the 'give them a fish? or teach them how to fish?' theme that red son aptly touched on.
    4. superman adventures 19; in this story CK saves hundreds of lives.....without lifting a finger! Best CK story ever written IMO.
    5. Hitman 34 by Garth Enis who isn't known for his love of mainstream characters like superman but in this comic he highlights the poignancy of superman's immigrant nature to perfection.
    6. Action comics annual #3 by Roger stern. What if superman became the president of the united states? well this comic answers question quite nicely.
    7. Adventures of superman 592 by joe casey. A fine, politically charged superman story done to perfection.
    8. Man of steel 123 by Geoff jones, which highlights superman's emotional vulnerability and it's stark contrast to superman physical invulnerability.
    There are actually alot more I can list but this will have to do for now.

    One I always remember as a kid is 'Superman vs Spider-Man', (1976) It's a bit cornball in spots but it's still a fun little read.
    One other Superman story that really deserves some notice is Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) and Steve Rude's three issue Superman/Batman series from the late 1980's 'World's Finest' in which both Supes & Bats somewhat reluctantly team up to put a stop to Lex Luthor & The Joker's evil alliance.
    Well worth a read for anyone who loves Batman & Superman as characters.

    There are much better stories than having to put his origin on this lit so many times. I personally like "All Seasons" and "Brainiac" better than allot of these. Public Enemies is what should be the ground work for a Superman / Batman movie and not the "Dark Knight: Returns". I think something New 52 like "Doomed" could have gotten an Honorable mention.I personally prefer "What Lies Beneath" for a New 52 arc, but no one ever talks about it. I'm also not crazy about Superman: Red Son. Some of the alterations are more distracting to me than adding to the story.
