Detroit's transition from Yzerman/Fedorov to Datsyuk/Zetterberg was the key to their success while Lidstrom was apart of both generations and dominated the decade in Norris and other trophies.
Scarecrow7 A fun fact that I realized is that Lidstrom has been apart of all 6 presidents trophy Wings teams which is obviously the most, and Lidstrom also never missed the playoffs in his career, as I believe his rookie year is when the streak started.
The wings made the playoffs every year of the decade, had over 100 points every year won two cups, lost in the cup finals once and the conference finals once, won 4 or 5 presidents trophies a pretty amazing decade.
2006 1st round loss to Oilers(who went to the Finals) really hurt, that year's Wings roster was one of their best, Manny Legace might have been at fault.
Hasek left Buffalo in 01.... 02-04 rebuilding, 05-07 they were a WAGON. So I’m just going to assume THG just forgot, he’s normally spot on, I’ll cut some slack.
Carolina's '05-'06 team can be considered underrated because it took them 7 games to beat a Buffalo team without their top 4 defensemen playing in the conference finals, and then had to go to 7 games against the 8th seeded Oilers. Still a Cup championship and you cannot discount that in itself, but when you measure up to the other champions, they lack that extra bump.
I loved the 2000s wings. We had a mix of Yzerman, Lidstrom, Datsyuk and Zetterburg. I wished we would’ve won more cups during the empire coming from a leafs wings fan
the red wings realized the value of scouting a decade before the rest of the league did. they were honestly talented enough to win five cups between 2000 and 2010
2006 1st round loss to Oilers(who went to the Finals) really hurt, that year's Wings roster was one of their best, Manny Legace might have been at fault.
Agreed. The 05-06 and 06-07 teams were among the best teams of the entire decade. They shouldn't be too high but definitely closer to 10 rather than 16.

@@dman7774 I agree that Malkin should be mentioned. Shannon saying the Penguins success is because of #87 is just factually wrong. The Penguins actually have a higher winning percentage when Crosby is out of the lineup.
Hey shannon, love the content. Got a couple video ideas if they're not already in the works: best single seasons for teams/players and worst single seasons for teams (maybe top 15 lists?)
Definitely have to say growing up a hockey fan in Michigan in the 90s/2000s we were absolutely spoiled by how great the Red Wings were. Great time to fall in love with hockey. But we also deal with the Lions so it balances out lol.
Chris R my introduction to hockey was the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs...I was a kid just getting into sports in NC when the Hurricanes were going on that big playoff run. I was devastated by the loss to your Wings, but in retrospect I realized that ‘02 team is still one of the best ever assembled. Lidstrom, Yzerman, Hull, Hasek, Federov, Shanahan, Larionov, Robitaille, and Chelios are all in the Hall. They also had a young Pavel Datsyuk and other players I remember like Kirk Maltby. Plus Scotty Bowman was coaching. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a better team.

Given all the talent that the Sharks have had over the years, it almost seems impossible that they've never won a Stanley Cup. They are the Minnesota Vikings of the NHL.
Darren McCarty said recently that the wings won in 08 in spite of babcock and lost because of him in 09 and I believe it. You didn’t have datsyuk the first 5 games of the series which was a factor but you were still up 3-2. You took hossa from them. There’s no reason the wings shouldn’t have won cups in 07, 08, 09. I think if there was a coach the players respected a bit more behind the bench, they would have. They were absolutely loaded. Also holland was a dumbass for letting hossa walk so easily.
MikeG82 still should have won when you were up 3-2. If you rewatch the 08 series, that should have been a sweep. There were long stretches where Detroit dominated Pittsburgh. And that was with hossa.
Randy Randerson The 09 series was the perfect storm of the wings being hurt and the Penguins getting some help from the league with Colin Campbell reversing Malkins automatic suspension for game 3. Datsyuk was hurt but he did not play well in those playoffs, Lidstrom was a god playing through a ruptured testicle, but Hossa was an absolute ghost throughout the entire playoffs, it made sense to retain Franzen instead because he was a beast with 25 playoff goals in 2 years. No excuse to lose that series. The wings were up 3-2 and then scored only two goals the rest of the series: Kris Draper and Jonathan Ericsson. That’s the short answer
LA had 3 year's of playoffs to start the decade and then frustrated the crap out of me the next 6 seasons Deadmarsh's career ending, the Jason Allison trade and subsequent injury's killed the decade for LA but hey Brown,Kopitar, and Doughty equalled 2 cups

Yes they won in 08 but they got even better in 09 and lost. It doesn’t make sense. I’m just glad I got to see them win but it should’ve been so much more
It's how hockey goes some time; sometimes you just hit a bunch of bad luck. They looked well on their way to beating LA in '01 but lost Yzerman and Shanahan to injury for almost the whole series, they could've easily won in '03 or '06 if not for running into super hot goalies in Giguere and Roloson. By NHL rule Malkin should've been suspended for game 3 in '09 after getting the instigating penalty in the last 5 minutes and without his 3 assists the game he would've been suspended, that series is probably 3-0, in '07 they were less than a minute from going up 3-2 on Anaheim (who won the cup and were the other best team left) before that terribly unlucky goal that hit Lidstrom's stick on the ice and went straight up over Hasek. She is a cruel mistress sometimes those NHL playoffs.
Hasek departed in 01 from Buffalo. The sabres teams post lock-out were some of the better teams to start that era of hockey. Pre-lock out, the team was re-tooling a bit. Toward the end of the decade they started to slide, but they had Miller, Vanek, and Pommenville all in their prime.
The Red Wings always gave the Stars problems. I was so happy when Colorado beat Detroit in the playoffs in 99. If Detroit had beaten Colorado that year, I honestly think Dallas would not have won the Cup that year
I think rebuilds are tricky for NHL teams, but it can be a challenge to become a Stanley cup contender because teams have to be smart, draft well and maybe have top end players in key positions on the team.
I still miss the Thrashers. If the owners ever got their shit together, the team could've won at least one cup. Some really talented players in their history. Hossa, Heatley, Kovalchuck, Byfuglien, Little, McEachern, Snyder (rest in peace Danny boy), etc. Great jerseys too.
Vancouver, Toronto, st Louis and buffalo, who had 9 points using you’re system (Toronto had 10), all should’ve been ahead of Tampa and Calgary who only had 8
Dildo Swaggins I thought so too, but you have to remember they went to a conference final in 2001 before the rebuild. That means they made 3 of 9 conference finals in the decade and appeared in 14 playoff series. Despite those bad 3 years they made the playoffs 5 out of nine years and only once did not win a playoff series. The math adds up.
Scarecrow7 Ya from 03-04 all the way to now the Sharks have the most wins, points, and i believe points percentage excluding Vegas and least amount of losses. Regular season champs that struggle in the playoffs.
I dunno, Shannon. Saying Sabres started to have their troubles after losing Hasek seems a bit exaggerated. Miller was no Hasek, but he was definitely as stud. The team from 05-07 was a beast. Shame it got disbanded so soon. Could've possibly had a better 07-08 season if we didn't lose keys like Briere and Drury.
I understand bertuzzi was a great player, but what he did to Steve Moore I never could get past it. I truly hate him as a player now, I just was shocked when that happened and how unruly it was.
"And then Pronger's wife said it's cold here, and that's where that ended". I laughed pretty hard... As an Oilers fan too. Shit sucked at the time, and she was and is public enemy number 1, but you just gotta laugh sometimes!
In regards to San Jose and St. Louis, I get your formula and think its a good way to do it, but at the same time it is pretty goofy to see a team that didn't win Lord Stanley's Cup ahead of one that did. But I get its based on consistency in keeping a good record and getting into the playoffs too. So I see both sides of the argument.
Part of me was surprised by how high the Blues were. I became old enough to really start watching hockey near the end of this decade when the Blues were awful.
I don’t think the rangers should be this low after the lockout they missed the playoffs once hank came in that year and the team changed. I know they didn’t have deep runs because they lost to the penguins a lot but they were still a solid team the second half of that decade
16?!? Why are we Sabres only 16...oh wait... that's right....Management went on a fire sale after BOTCHING Drury & Briere resignings....😑😤😭 aaaaaand were STILL waiting....
The devils had a much tougher division then Detroit, even the board shows that. The Islanders where better than Columbus, the Rangers were better than Nashville and Chicago, the THIRD best team in the Dev's division Philly where miles better than Detroits SECOND best ST Louis, and there was no equivalent of the Pens for Detroit to deal with. It's a lot easier to qualify for the play-offs on a regular basis when your division is always weak.
Fallen Devonish It’s still not really a debate, Detroit made the playoffs with over 100 points every year of the decade, won 2 cups, 4 presidents trophies, led the west 6 years, won their division every single year, had two of the top 3 single season teams of the decade, and had the most Hall of Fame players. They were easily the best of the league
I mean it’s a great list but top ten would be some changes but the way they still are now are fine and I could see why personally I’d have 1.Nj 2.avs 3.wings 4.ducks 5. Pens 6. Stars 7.sharks 8.sens 9.canes 10.flyers but great list either way
Haven’t started watching the vid yet but Shannon if the Isles are above 25 the list is wrong. Horrible trades. Horrible picks. Horrible seasons. Horrible franchise on this decade

Predict before watching:
5. Pittsburgh
4. Avs
3. Devils
2. Ducks
1. Wings
Ducks ahead of the Devils????
Well, you got the right teams, but you were a bit off in the order.
We need an in between the decades for Vancouver lol
Funny decade for Michigan sports, wings and pistols were great while tigers and lions were historically bad
The flames got completely robbed of that cup
wait... my team is number 1 on a hockey guy list????
Part of me was surprised by how high the Blues were. I became old enough to really start watching hockey near the end of this decade when the Blues were awful.
Jay I remember the days the arena was half full at the end of the decade. Not all that long ago.
First, the sharks were ahead of St. louis. Then, the sharks were ahead of St. louis.
Ottawa before Melnyke must of been nice
Tbh melnyk actually saved the team in 2003 when he bought it. I’m not saying he’s not an idiot now but back then he was much less hands on
I don’t think the rangers should be this low after the lockout they missed the playoffs once hank came in that year and the team changed. I know they didn’t have deep runs because they lost to the penguins a lot but they were still a solid team the second half of that decade
Islanders aren’t 30th I’m stunned
Why isn't Vegas on this list? :P
Vegas would be in the 2010's. The 2000's ended in 2010 because it would've been 10 years. Vegas formed around 2018.
And Pittsburgh could easily be 1st or 2nd of the 90s... What a stretch
I am shocked Chicago was 24th tbh, they were arguably the worst team from 2003-2007, like almost unwatchable during that time.
what a jersey though
5:30 Jesus Christ 😲
Wings
I mean it’s a great list but top ten would be some changes but the way they still are now are fine and I could see why personally I’d have 1.Nj 2.avs 3.wings 4.ducks 5. Pens 6. Stars 7.sharks 8.sens 9.canes 10.flyers but great list either way
Soul Reaper888 Not having the wings #1 is madness. They were the team of the 90ds and the 2000ds
Wow talk about a bad list
Haven’t started watching the vid yet but Shannon if the Isles are above 25 the list is wrong. Horrible trades. Horrible picks. Horrible seasons. Horrible franchise on this decade
Gotcha! Right at 25.
LGRW!!!!!!!!!!
