Loved this video, I dont know if this would take too much time but a breakdown of teams playoff success for each year would be nice for earlier years that arent as fresh in our minds. Like you could say "blank team" made it to the first round in 1982,84 and 87. Keep up the great stuff.
As someone who skipped to the end... How can you have the Blackhawks as number 1 right now??? Don't you know it's Detroit! They haven't lost a game in days! I don't see them losing a game in April either... In all seriousness the Blackhawks were amazing this decade. The talent acquisition is top notch. The fact that they not only draft well but find gems like Panarin is crazy
Going into this video I'm trying to guess who wins. Chicago does have 1 more Cup this decade but Pittsburgh never missed the playoffs. Should be interesting
I literally said before watching the video, the Canucks would be no lower than 17 and no higher than 12. 12 is still pretty good considering how bad we’ve been the last 5 years
Missing hockey. Hoping that Hockey Night In Canada will put on a hockey related broadcast. I'd even be happy with the intermission crew talking hockey and playing clips of important things of the year and talking potential future ideas to complete the season.
I think it is pretty sad that the highest a Canadian team is on this list is 12. Not to mention, that the highest-ranked Canadian team, plays in the Canadian city, which has by far the warmest winter. To me, the coldest NHL cities should be the ones that wins the most Stanley Cups. Because remember hockey is played on ice and you will not find ice anywhere in Florida unless you tossed water into a freezer.
This is dead on in my opinion. Before watching I thought my isles would be around 23-25. But the review of every team opened my eyes to reality, that some things are easy to forget.
I thought there could be a count back, where the NHL will select completed games so all teams will be uniform in total completed games home/away and division/conference (not as important), so a team that is in playoffs are out after the levelling countback that could be introduced, Presidents, GMs and fans maybe could be vocal on this introduced system or leaving as if, without completed regular season. Same with NBA. But it appears this won't be ever addressed or even mentioned.

@@packers256 the blues were good the whole decade too, since hitch came in in 2011. Yeah they choked a few first rounds, but made a few runs and won the cup, which does weigh more than 3 conference final losses I think. I shouldn't have made it sound like it wasn't close..

Honestly surprised to see the Stars on the bottom row (not a Stars fan). Given Dallas had a few quality seasons and second round playoff appearances mixed in with the misses, I would have guessed they'd be in the row above.
If I remember correctly the Caps had the beat record during the 2010s. However, their lack of SC Playoff success really hurt them in terms of being in the running for the 'team of the decade.'
@thehockeyguy, let’s please set the record straight... The Sharks got to the 2019 conference final with guts, skill, and something every team ever has or doesn’t have at random, puck luck. The thing everyone’s salty over is referee incompetence, something much like puck luck, is random and indiscriminately helpful or hurtful. Last year’s Round 1 was Vegas’ to lose. Everyone remembers them giving up 4 goals in 5 mins, but everyone also conveniently forgets that they had won 3 out of 7 games by game five and then subsequently lost each game they needed until they were knocked out. In Round 2 we went game for game with the Avs for seven games. The offsides dispute in game 7 was a challenge any coach would’ve taken, and it worked out because of the randomness of the ref’s decision. The hand pass in Round 3 was an act of duress in scrambled melee. Timo was trying to get it on his stick, he got checked by a Blues player, the puck ended up on another players stick and they scored. Again, the refs could’ve called it but they didn’t. All of the Sharks were ready for the call but it never came. So I ask again, aside from haters simply being haters, how are the Sharks the arbiters of their own controversy? We played hard during the whole run; lost our captain twice, Cooch lost like half the teeth in his mouth, EK65’s groin was torn to shit, and yet we endured. Ever since last year the refs have done nothing but screw us all this season as punishment for their own embarrassments. But all that aside I’d still hope for a little more empathy from you, Shannon. No love lost or anything, but definitely don’t feel like staying quiet about the so-called controversy.
The sharks won from referee incompetency you're just a sharks fan so you dont want to admit that. The sharks are eh team that got saved by trash reffing
Matthew Daley If Pittsburgh gives up someone with a lot of cap to expansion then they will be fine...That’s why I’m kind of excited for the expansion because as of right now Chicago is expected to give up Saad....6 mil in cap gone like that!
This ranking is mostly based on post season success, as it should be. However if some like to figure in regular seasons here is an oversimplified look at regular season success. (Oversimplified as in its just one stat, not division wins, playoffs made, presidents cups etc. which honestly would be far more helpful, but I have limited time) Here is simply a list of regular season wins Pittsburgh Penguins 466 Washington Capitals 462 St. Louis Blues 443 Boston Bruins 442 San Jose Sharks 441 Chicago Blackhawks 437 Tampa Bay Lightning 436 Anaheim Ducks 426 Nashville Predators 422 New York Rangers 417 Los Angeles Kings 408 Montreal Canadiens 397 Minnesota Wild 396 Dallas Stars 393 Philadelphia Flyers 392 Vancouver Canucks 391 Calgary Flames 384 Winnipeg Jets 384 Detroit Red Wings 381 Columbus Blue Jackets 380 New York Islanders 372 Colorado Avalanche 363 New Jersey Devils 361 Ottawa Senators 361 Toronto Maple Leafs 360 Arizona Coyotes 350 Carolina Hurricanes 346 Florida Panthers 344 Buffalo Sabres 318 Edmonton Oilers 305 Vegas Golden Knights 94
As a fellow Stars fan I’m also still bitter about the Lehtonen and Niemi debacle. And now Jim Nill decided that only 1 scoring line is good enough. Granted that line is one of the best on hockey but still
The Hockey Guy even outside of the cup the blues had a higher winning percentage, more total wins and 4 of their early playoff exits were due to being matched up against the eventual Stanley cup champions. I like your list overall, but I agree the Sharks are too high.
@@ogreman2229 I've always thought the one major flaw of the current playoff seeding system is this: it punishes teams for being in the stronger division. Hence the Blues having to play the Hawks in the first round a lot despite both being top 4 in the conference in those years. It's too much to calculate into Shannon's rankings for every team, but it is interesting to think about how this seeding system has likely helped a team like San Jose make more frequent deep runs coming out of a weaker Pacific division.

Not taking anything away from the Blues last year but the Sharks were definitely the more consistent and better team over those 10 years. Also, both times the Blues made the Conference Finals, they played the Sharks.
Hate on the Sharks all we want but we can't deny how consistently good, & even dominant at times, they were over the decade.
Lone Wolfe 19 No one wanted to play the Sharks in the 2010’s during the playoffs. Just those pesky Kings got in the way.
Loved this video, I dont know if this would take too much time but a breakdown of teams playoff success for each year would be nice for earlier years that arent as fresh in our minds. Like you could say "blank team" made it to the first round in 1982,84 and 87. Keep up the great stuff.
This video is a very fresh idea and we need more of it!
I moved to Edmonton in 2012, and until the playoff run in 2017, all I heard was the "Decade of Darkness" for the Oilers.
Great job. No one had Nashville beating Chicago that year, lol
Going into this video I'm trying to guess who wins. Chicago does have 1 more Cup this decade but Pittsburgh never missed the playoffs. Should be interesting
Nice work shannon, i called the top 5
I literally said before watching the video, the Canucks would be no lower than 17 and no higher than 12. 12 is still pretty good considering how bad we’ve been the last 5 years

Seeing my Kings have more wins than losses in a decade makes the 2010s decade so special if your a Kings fan. Haha!
Missing hockey. Hoping that Hockey Night In Canada will put on a hockey related broadcast. I'd even be happy with the intermission crew talking hockey and playing clips of important things of the year and talking potential future ideas to complete the season.
i love the pens but it had to be the hawks
i really like checkin' shannon's "older" vids (i didn't discover this channel until earlier this year)
I think it is pretty sad that the highest a Canadian team is on this list is 12.
Ahem
What about the Thrashers?
NYRGaming30 you know, I thought they were pre 2010 but nope 2011
Tampa actually made it 4 times to the conference finals because 2011
the good news for them is that so far for the next decade power rankings they are contenders for 1st place
Finally a recent power ranking where we make the top row 😝
I thought there could be a count back, where the NHL will select completed games so all teams will be uniform in total completed games home/away and division/conference (not as important), so a team that is in playoffs are out after the levelling countback that could be introduced, Presidents, GMs and fans maybe could be vocal on this introduced system or leaving as if, without completed regular season. Same with NBA. But it appears this won't be ever addressed or even mentioned.
I skipped to the end and couldn't believe the 80s Islanders and Oilers weren't #s 1&2 on your list!
29:51 you called the draft lottery results with Lafreniere
No way San Jose should be ahead of St. Louis. Similar decade but stl won the cup!
san jose was arguably the best team in the league for a few years early in the decade
Playoffs 9/10 years, 1 Cup Final, 4 Conference Finals, Past 1st round 6/9 Times. VS Playoffs 7/10 years, 1 Cup Champ, 2 Conference Finals, Past 1st round 4/7 times.

Disagree man, you can't act like the cup is everything and nothing else matters in these rankings. Sharks were consistently very good for the whole decade unlike the Blues.
@@packers256 the blues were good the whole decade too, since hitch came in in 2011. Yeah they choked a few first rounds, but made a few runs and won the cup, which does weigh more than 3 conference final losses I think. I shouldn't have made it sound like it wasn't close..
@@babayaga6184 They missed the playoffs 3 out of 10 times and 3 other times they lost in the 1st round, what do you mean they were good for the "whole decade"?
Lehtonen-niemi combo was sick
Your hockey vids are keeping me going - thanks :)
You had it good until the top 2. Chicago missing the playoffs hurts them in my eyes. Pittsburgh had back to back cups and didn't miss the playoffs once.
They also won five Playoff Series, lost eight, and, five of those losing efforts were to teams that they should have beaten rather easily.
@Atheos B. Sapien Kevin Stevens thought visors were for pussies which by his logic made Larry Murphy a pussy, as for being a bitch, so often it does takes one to know one.
@Atheos B. Sapien They also lost to teams they should have dominated, without a real rival, they still went several years without Cups.
@Atheos B. Sapien The visor that gives you a long career, but, Brockton Boys like him were too macho for that, I'm not sure what's worse, you're grammar, or, your manners.
@Atheos B. Sapien No, I'm just pointing out how your emotions have clouded your judgment, and, made you into a complete loose cannon.
Super concept :) bravo !
for the 2000s im predicting:
3). Red Wings
2). Avs
1). Devils
Devils sucked at the end of the 2000s
Cbj I think would benefit most from a home grown star I think. Maybe that on pick they had last draft is the guy.
Chicago should still be a contender if not for some poor management decisions on personnel
I'm guessing what happened to them likely happens to the Penguins, particularly if the Playoffs are cancelled, combined with the Expansion Draft.
Matthew Daley If Pittsburgh gives up someone with a lot of cap to expansion then they will be fine...That’s why I’m kind of excited for the expansion because as of right now Chicago is expected to give up Saad....6 mil in cap gone like that!
"Buffalo fans didn't expect to be very high on this list" Well actually, I did not expect to be as high as u put us.
Good list overall but I think you should have deducted points for certain things as well like consecutive playoff misses.
I like this idea...are you doing every decade? If so, it be really cool if you could use throwbavk logos teams were using at the time.
okay now next decade remember this so we can compare and predict the following decade
This ranking is mostly based on post season success, as it should be.
However if some like to figure in regular seasons here is an oversimplified look at regular season success. (Oversimplified as in its just one stat, not division wins, playoffs made, presidents cups etc. which honestly would be far more helpful, but I have limited time)
Here is simply a list of regular season wins
Pittsburgh Penguins 466
Washington Capitals 462
St. Louis Blues 443
Boston Bruins 442
San Jose Sharks 441
Chicago Blackhawks 437
Tampa Bay Lightning 436
Anaheim Ducks 426
Nashville Predators 422
New York Rangers 417
Los Angeles Kings 408
Montreal Canadiens 397

Philadelphia Flyers 392
Vancouver Canucks 391
Calgary Flames 384

Colorado Avalanche 363
New Jersey Devils 361
Ottawa Senators 361

Florida Panthers 344
Buffalo Sabres 318
Edmonton Oilers 305
Vegas Golden Knights 94
Shanon you are breaking my heart as a flyers fan
Man Shannon looks great in white and blue.
Forever the best hockey channel. Been watching for at least 2 nhl seasons now and I’m always impressed with the content. Keep it up!
Keith has to be in the hall of fame. NHL put him in their 100 greatest players, so by default he’s pretty much in.
He shouldnt have been in the top 100 there's dozens of better players but a hes hall of fame
@@wagglewiggle Keith may be old but he was the only defensemen who could defend McDavid during the return to play.
As a fellow Stars fan I’m also still bitter about the Lehtonen and Niemi debacle. And now Jim Nill decided that only 1 scoring line is good enough. Granted that line is one of the best on hockey but still
Stl has to be above sj one cup is far better than infinite finals appearances.
It's over the period of a decade though. When I do the 2000s, do the Canes get a top spot with one Cup?
Connor Madden agreed
@@connormadden182 it's hard to call the pacific weak when the california trio were the terror of the league until vegas started beating them up lol
I’d have
1. Chicago
2. Pittsburgh
3. LA
4. Boston
5. Caps (reluctantly because they were trash in playoffs until they finally won)
6. St. Louis
7. San Jose
8. Rangers
And Tampa went on to 3 straight Stanley cup finals and 2 straight cups. Between 2015 and 2023 using basically any point system Tampa would probably be over double the next best
great spot for oilers... still not sure why ive been a fan all these years
I skipped to the end and I can't believe the 90s red wings aren't #1 on your list!
2016-2017 and 20-17-2018 the caps vs pens series were legit the Stanley cup finals. Whoever won between the two were no doubt winning the cup and Unfortunately pens got the best of caps twice. Caps couldn’t been the team with 3 cups
Perfect timing m8-i needed a distratction.
Wow, Tampa went from swept in 1st to not even making the playoffs this year.
Also as a Habs fan I'm loving the history videos. It's all we got
Tampa is in the playoffs..........
aaaaaand now they just won the cup............lol
@@tristanthechampion9227 and they did it again
Seeing how both the Canes and Oilers are being run now I’d be shocked if they both aren’t at least in the top ten for 2020’s
If this was 2007-2008 to 2017-2018 Pittsburgh would be number one
Solid rankings for most part.
Crosby looks like a flyer in the thumbnail.
I'm surprised that you would rank the Ducks so high considering that they haven't won anything significant this decade. Oh well, let's hope for better things to come in the 2020s
It will be interesting to compare 2010 to 2000
do a power rankings on the best GM'S currently
i started watching hockey and really cheering for the leafs in 2010... it has not been a fun time in terms of watching my favourite team play hockey
Nice to see Ottawa not in the bottom row for a change.
So basically vancouver was the most successful canadian team throughout the 2010s
damn.. that's kinda sad(as a canucks fan btw)
Blues fans won’t be happy with this one..
Nah, 7 is about right for us. The only debate is whether the Blues should be ahead of the Sharks, but SJ was so consistent in the playoffs the whole decade it's not a surprise they wound up ahead in Shannon's point system.
Connor Madden the Blues should most definitely be ahead of the Sharks 😂. Literally no debate
@@mperez9101 I agree, was just putting it nicely out of respect for Shannon haha
Eh I'm a little triggered that the FUCKING HAWKS are a head of the Blues, but like what do you expect
Shannon has a well known anti-Blues bias, so it's not really surprising to see him find a way to put a team that didn't win a Cup ahead of them.
Do this for more decades!
I'd love to see the points each team got
You're forgetting the Tampa vs. Boston ECF in 2011
I skipped to the end and I can't believe the 70s Habs aren't #1 on your list!
I feel like I'd rather have a cup and not make the playoffs for two years than lose in the conference finals three years in a row. But what do I know, I've never celebrated a cup...
16:22 My guess is the Flyers. Maybe Boston?
arizona over cbj? i know they had the run in 2012 and weren’t that bad early in the decade but i wouldn’t put them over us
Top 4 on this list should be hawks, pens, kings and bruins. Am I right?
Ask the Blues if you really need a good goalie to win. They weren't even in the playoffs before Binnington
