    A 2000 Corolla is known to have gasket leaking when it is old as a common problem. Inability to climb mild inclines and rough running is odd for a Toyota 1.8L engine. I replaced fuel injectors (rebuilt, warranted set for $130) and coils and got platinum NGK plugs and at last... had the intake manifold GASKET replaced for fairly cheap. Problem disappeared on GASKET replacement after the 3 other things were done. At 275K miles on the odometer !

I’ve already got shops telling me it’s going to take them 3 hours to find the leak , sounds like some bullshit and I am a woman too.

    Hi, great video thanks. I have the problem, which I understand is quite common on these, where the revs at idle, surge up & down around 2k revs when the engine is first stated, particularly from cold. I understand that a leaking intake gasket can be the cause of this problem, but my fuel trims look normal (around 0). I was wondering if you know of any other causes of this surging idle problem? Many thanks.

    I appreciate seeing the second method as I've heard of that but it was nice to see. Regarding the first soapy water method, was the engine on??? Will you see a leak without engine on? Where did air come out of, ambient? But the second part was good.

    • @alextwist8

      The bubbles are made by the smoke machine blowing smoke into the intake. With the engine on it'd just suck the water in as the manifold is under vaccum.

    Thanks Eric really neat trick. Got a maybe not so easy question for ya. What maker of vehicle scanners do you recommend for the DIY'r who wants live data feedback, on screen code assist and generally a real good quality scanner?Background - I had an Actron CP9580A code reader but I gave it to my son who now lives in Texas. The only thing I don't like about this scanner is that it can't interface with Windows 8 or Win 10 computers. They have said that they plan to release a new driver for the computer/tool for the last year. I'm getting a little antsy waiting for them. I know there is a half dozen or so good scanners out there ranging from wireless to connected and from cheap and erase codes to the lets see what else is going on type of scanners. The latter is my choice for scanner capability level.

    Could you also use the scan data readout of manifold absolute pressure to confirm vacuum leak? I have 1999 Toyota Corolla. Idle LTFT is rather eratic (up to 15%) but stablizes to 7% and under after long drive. It seems like maybe there's a vacuum leak at intake manifold gasket that gets sealed when gasket expands under heat? But the manifold absolute pressure stays at 10.5 inch HG to 11.3 inch HG @ idle (AC off) regardless if the LTFT is at 15% or under 7%. So, is it possible to have a vacuum leak that does not get picked up by the MAP reading? Thanks.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  9 лет назад

      yusuihang Oh for sure. It is not like you are loosing inches of vacuum or enough to be registered on the MAP sensor. Your best bet in this case is to use the STFT. The gasket will seal up as it is warmed up, almost completely in some cases. They are very cheap and easy to change even if you didn't want to test it and just guess.

    • @yusuihang
      @yusuihang 9 лет назад

      South Main Auto Repair
      Thanks. I hesitated with just changing out the gasket because on the 1999 Corolla, gasket is flat type (felt?) sandwiched between metal surfaces unlike the later (after 2003, I think) Corollas which have the rubber gasket and plastic intake manifold. So I wasn't sure if the gasket seal would improve with heat like with the rubber gasket. But I have 360k miles on the original gasket, so it's probably a good time to just replace it.
      I stumbled onto your youtube channel last night and like your videos a lot. I subscribed right away. I had watched ETCG videos before, but never subscribed to him. I am just a home DIY but appreciate the contents of your videos. Hope you will continue broadcasting.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  9 лет назад +1

      Oh I see, sorry I didn't look to see what the 99 used for a gasket. Do you have a scan tool you can watch the STFT and spray around to find the leak? Do you know what I mean?

    • @yusuihang
      @yusuihang 9 лет назад

      South Main Auto Repair
      Yes, I know what you mean. And I do have scan tool to watch the STFT/LTFT as I am spraying. I will try that out. For the 1999 Corolla, only need to remove plastic cover (secured via nuts on studs through valve cover) over fuel rail to spray around intake manifold.
      I had previously sprayed around other parts of the engine (throttle body), PCV hoses, but stopped short of removing fuel rail cover to spray intake (and injectors) because I thought the valve cover studs may have to be removed to take off the plastic fuel rail cover and I thought I should get torque specs for valve cover bolts first. Now, I have the torque specs for valve cover bolts but I also realize the the fuel rail cover can probably be removed via nuts on the valve cover studs without having to unbolt the studs. I know that my thought process may have excessive and ridiculous. :)

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  9 лет назад

      No your though process is great. To get the best results do it when the car has sat over night and is stone cold. If the intake is leaking that is when it will leak the worst IMO. Will you let us know what you find?

    Help plz. 2005 Corolla with p0171. So far have changed the maf with Toyota oem part. Replaced both o2 sensors with denso. Changed intake gasket. Changed catalytic converter due to a leak. Fuel pressure reads at 49 psi. Removed and cleaned fuel injectors. No vacuum leak. Car running very rough at idle. At idle, short term fuel at 0 and long at 25. At 2000 rpm, short at -4 and long jumps to 40. Any ideas plz.

    • @MarzNet256
      @MarzNet256 7 лет назад +1

      sargon khabeer Hook up a scan tool and check vacuum at idle on warm engine. It should read about -25. If it's much higher (less negative) you still have a vacuum leak which will cause a rich condition (as shown by you high LTFT). However, with a vacuum leak the LTFT should drop at higher RPM. You might also have worn injectors which are not spraying fuel properly-even though you cleaned them. You can remove and check spray pattern (videos online for how to do this) Check the plugs. What is the RPM at idle when engine is warm? How many miles on car?

I have the same issue, maybe I'm not noticing performance decline but car vibrates, changed engine seats, cleaned throttle body, changed MAF sensor, changed spark plugs, changed fuel filter assembly, cleaned fuel injectors, cleaned air filter, changed pcv valve and hose, oh and the car still has bad gas milage, it's a 2010 Corolla xli, GCC specs, with almost 200k km now, a full gas tank of 42 litres would drive me a total of 340km in city and then I'll have to refill again.

      You spray where the soap was bubbling on the intake.... all along the gasket seam where it meets the head. Smh. It'll naturally draw in the carb cleaner, brake clean, etc, and change those specs in the scanner. It's just another way to prove there's the leak.
