  • The Winged Scourge is the first of a series of health-related educational short films produced by the Disney studios and the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs for showing in Latin America. It was also the only one to use established Disney characters (the Seven Dwarfs).
In this propaganda short, the viewers are taught about how mosquitoes can spread malaria. A young mosquito flies into a house and consumes the blood of an infected human. She then consumes the blood of a healthy human, transmitting the disease to him. It turns out that this is actually a film within a film and the Seven Dwarfs are watching it. The Dwarfs volunteer to get rid of the mosquito by destroying her breeding grounds and encouraging its natural predators.
The short mentions the use of Paris green and motor oil to control the spread of malaria-borne mosquitoes, both of which are no longer recommended; Paris green was once used as a pigment and later an insecticide but has since been discontinued due to it being extremely poisonous.

Though, one thing to acknowledge is that what people didn't fully realize in the 1940's was most of the techniques used to rid mosquitoes was also really bad for the environment like the oil spray and, correct me if I'm wrong, burying tin cans. But this was long before Off bug repellant.

This is short film is of historical interest. But pouring gasoline, oil, and pesticides into water isn't exactly a bright idea. I do remember in the 1960's these methods were uses, and we paid for it with undrinkable water.

They use motor oil back in the 40s to killed mosquitos' larvae, until it was banned in the 60s, it' was toxic to environment. Now here today in 21st century, people use baby oil or vegetable oil to kill the larvae, make it safe in the environment.

If frogs got malaria from eating mosquitos, they'd be extinct by now. Same with spiders catching them in their webs.
It's the mosquito's bite that gets the disease into your blood. Once the insect hits the frog's digestive tract, it's done biting for good.

This was meant to be an educational skit commissioned by Walt Disney as a cautionary review and tale to promote the prevention of malaria. The first ever Disney princess was not required to be included for it so the animators of this short simply decided not to

Back in the day the dwarfs were very popular, sometimes even more popular than Snow White's character. I once saw a documentary on the making of Pinocchio and they said that people were actually disappointed that the dwarfs weren't in Pinocchio, even though it's a totally different story.
