- The Winged Scourge is the first of a series of health-related educational short films produced by the Disney studios and the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs for showing in Latin America. It was also the only one to use established Disney characters (the Seven Dwarfs).
In this propaganda short, the viewers are taught about how mosquitoes can spread malaria. A young mosquito flies into a house and consumes the blood of an infected human. She then consumes the blood of a healthy human, transmitting the disease to him. It turns out that this is actually a film within a film and the Seven Dwarfs are watching it. The Dwarfs volunteer to get rid of the mosquito by destroying her breeding grounds and encouraging its natural predators.
The short mentions the use of Paris green and motor oil to control the spread of malaria-borne mosquitoes, both of which are no longer recommended; Paris green was once used as a pigment and later an insecticide but has since been discontinued due to it being extremely poisonous.
80 years later and we now know that putting motor oil on the water, burying trash, and using Paris Green (banned in the 1960's due to how toxic it was) is absolutely horrific for the environment lol
Even the most educated scientists believe in some bullshittery other people of their time believe
Not to mention destroying wetlands, and the thousands of species that live in them.
Agreed.
Yeah, due to those issues, this video has aged like milk. Yikes!
Now today in 21st century, People now use baby oil or vegetable oil to kill mosquito Larve.
I didn't know the 7 dwarves were helping people to get rid of the mosquito's but they did they job well done
Neither did I.
Yeah, they’re like the expendables
Me too I didn't know yeather.
They also encouraged my grandparents to help out during WWII. I forget what short it was, but the song went "It's off to War we go!"
@@dreamsofparis5535They did a film for the NFB where the dwarfs exchange the jewels from their mine for Canadian war bonds/certificates.
This was a fun edutainment short! I'm a big fan of dwarfs (especially the Disney branch)
Though, one thing to acknowledge is that what people didn't fully realize in the 1940's was most of the techniques used to rid mosquitoes was also really bad for the environment like the oil spray and, correct me if I'm wrong, burying tin cans. But this was long before Off bug repellant.
But they've got some things right
@@KatieSandell-o2o Yeah, like screens on doors and windows, plus netting over beds. They're still used to this day.
I was wondering how long it would be before someone brought this up.
殺虫剤や石油による環境汚染はさすがにカンベンしてほしい
それに蚊を食って生きている生き物も多いし
With the metal trash, I was expecting that they would say something about donating to a scrap drive, given the wartime conditions at the time (unless it wasn’t a usable kind, I guess).
As cool as seeing the dwarves again is. Seeing them cover water wirh oil, burying cans and getting rid of water doesnt feel right.
But other things they do are right like filling cracks, covering their beds in nets and putting a lid over their water barrel.
It isn’t that stuff Is horrible for the environment but covering the cracks and crevices is a effective way to prevent mosquitoes from reproducing or contracting the malaria virus
This informative short movie has way much more creativity and ingenuity than anything that came out of Disney studios in the past years!
They are spraying arsenic around the home.. including in a cooking pot. And spraying arsenic and oil in aquatic ecosystems. This is moronic and horrifying.
@@d.s.5820this was in the 40s the negative effects of those methods
The mosquito problem was Cobra Bubble's fault as he convinced the space council that they were an endangered species and to make more of them.
😂 now thats a good disney reference
I'm pretty sure he wasn't even born yet 😂
Plus, wasn't his lie about the mosquitoes started back in the 70s or 80s?
I'm not so sure. The movie came out in the early 2000s, but I think it may have taken place during the 50s or 60s because didn't you see in some scenes where they had black and white TVs in the shops, or the kids rode big wheels and Leela had a little record player. Those things weren't from the early 2000s.
@@theamericanshepherd5378 Nah bubbles mentions Roswell 1973 and implies that it was years ago. So we can assume the film takes place in contemporary 2003.
@@theamericanshepherd5378
The technology shown is very unmistakably nineties, and if owning a record player is only possible in the sixties I guess I'm frozen in time for owning and still using several XD
Also, the planned climax of the film saw the characters use a modern 747 plane to pursue Gantu through a city, but it got changed to using a starship in a mountain area due to 9/11 happening.
Not only is it very informative, but a wonderful piece of forgotten art!
Indeed.
Some of that information is severely outdated but still very informative and entertaining
This is extremely wrong and dated information, but great animation nonetheless
@@noeisnothere Indeed.
I'm glad they show this as a educational from Disney and the Seven Dwarfs in it is so cute!
God bless the 7 dwarfs
Glad you brought this back. A couple of the Sutherland educational vids that used to be on RUclips have disappeared over the years. So more copied are appreciated..
As expect, old Disney is the best.
Amen, brother
Define old because nobody wants any the early decades back. It's always the 90s.
@0deadx21 Around the 1940's up. Think Snow White amd The Seven Dwarves, Cinderella, or Dumbo. You can also put Sleeping Beauty in there too.
@@showman139 It's a good thing those films were made in those decades because people nowadays expect better and more nuances that those films offered. It'll be seen as lazy to make movies exactly like those.
If a 90s cartoon like Dexter's Laboratory didn't exist back then, it certainly won't now or ever. The opportune time to make it is long past. The episodes sure are outdated and lazy in comparison to stuff now.
@0deadx21 Lazy, maybe. Outdated is more relative. Also, what do you mean by nuanced? There are new cartoons out there that people are upset about.
I didnt even know this cartoon existed! I'm glad I stumbled across it!
Wow! I didn’t know about this short.
Neither did I
Same here.
Yeah! I wonder how many hidden gems are there
6:31 Is that a smile on Grumpy I see?
Let’s just say he’s interested in helping the environment .
Yup!!😊🎉
Grumpy doesn't smile often, but when he does, it's sure to melt your heart.
I believe it is. I think Snow White made a big impact on him
4:56 Don’t mess with the 7 Dwarfs!
The 7 dwarfs are the best. I know how to take care of the mosquitos. The short was very educational
🦟🦟🦟👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
4:21 - This clip was featured in the Shining Time Station episode, "Achoo", when Stacy Jones told Mr. Conductor the story of Li'l Sneezer (not to be confused with the Tiny Toon Adventures character of the same name). That larva was meant to represent a germ.
Gordon was crossed.
Gordon : Why should Henry have a new shape? A shape good enough for me is good enough for him! He goes gallivanting off, leaving us to his work for him, and then he comes back saying how happy he feels. It's disgraceful! And there's another thing; Henry whistles too much. No respectable engine whistles loudly at stations. It isn't wrong, but we just don't do it.
Narrator : Poor Henry didn't feel happy anymore.
Percy : [soothing] Never mind, Henry. I'm glad you're home again. I like your whistling.
Gordon : [as he leaves the shed] Goodbye, Henry. We are glad to have you with us again, but remember what I said.
Autism alert!
This cartoon was amazing.
But I'm not sure they know that the use of poison will have consequences on the nature. Same for puting cans underground.
The desc mentioned that Paris Green and Oil is no longer used due to the poison
What do you think happens to garbage? It's buried in landfills. Cans don't hurt anything.
I thought dealing with a witch, is one thing but mosquitoes . They’re dealing with a parasite.
WHAT!!?🤯🤯
NEVER KNEW ABOUT THIS! And I've seen some old ones!😮😱😵😳
This is new to me too.
Man disney back then teaches us alot of things even tho its toxic in standard day. Now it just nonsense on tv, thank you so kich for uploading this
They should've used Disney to create animated shorts on the COVID-19 pandemic.
I’d rather ask Baymax ⚫️➖⚫️🩺⛑️to volunteer on this case after all, he is a doctor and his job is to cure the environment . And sometimes I get the feeling, he must’ve saved the world by creative vaccination. 💉
There's an idea.
I think they did
😢😢😢😢😢😢
And here I thought that the winged scourge (that pecks in the night) was Darkwing Duck! Also, I never knew that the 7 Dwarves were experts in pest control.
No he's the terror that flaps in the night
The seven dwarfs of Snow White!
Indeed they are 😂
Yes
No, the mouses of Cinderella!
@@thatsmarco7413 don’t think so, but back, then men did had more attention and screen times than women.

From nature protection to mosquito and fish genocide poisoned with oil😂
The Animals are helping Happy, Dopey, Grumpy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Bashful, and Doc to get rid of Mosquitos?
Wow, I've never seen this cartoon short before. It would've been a cool bonus feature on the Snow White DVD/Blu-ray.
Hopefully I’d rather consider refurbishing again.
Agreed.
its cool how much people knew about mosquitoe biology all the way back in the 1900s
Trust me, they were MUCH smarter than we give them credit for.
That’s the reason why we have history classes to learn from our past to better prepare us for the future
And how much they don't know yet about how oil in the water and Paris Green as mosquito control are harmful to the environment and burying a can instead of recycle is not the answer, but that's just how it was. We are constantly learning from mistake and be better.
Wait… were they telling people to purposefully pour oil into bodies of water?
They said only a little and probably didn't know that killed anything other than bugs at the time. This is an awfully old cartoon.
Yes, at the time they thought it was fine. Do not put oil on water.
@@richvanatte3947 Might be why RUclips was the only place to find this video
@@jonathansayah9506 yeah, I knew that much. XD
It’s one of those old “information cartoons” they did, educating people on stuff or something XD
@@The_Unknown_Mister_E The oil thing aside, it was a good thing too. Mind you, bug prevention methods have improved somewhat.
Another trick I heard for mosquitos in rain barrels is keeping small fish like goldfish in them to eat the wigglers. I guess the fish poop adds nutrients for when you water your flower garden. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
What do you do with the fish in the mean time, do you feed them and take care of them?
The part where those dwarves are making a screen fence for their windows car reminds me my second trip to Orlando, which they probably used it on those wasps .
Dopey the mosquito hunter!
Keep your body Safe & in good Health.
Infelizmente não se fazem mais desenhos desse nível, a nível educativo!
Thanks seven dwarfs
I like how they blame the mosquito, who doesn't know they have the illness, and not Malaria itself.
It was a bigger problem in the us back in the day, now a days malaria isn’t around in the states but other than that the mosquitoes here are at most a mild annoyance but all around harmless
The malaria doesn't know its doing harm either its just doing what we all are...trying to survive
Malaria do harm. IT Attack And destroy your read blood cells
The mosquitos have more agency.
They might blame bats for Covid-19, and make a cartoon of it in the future.
Disney has always been a propaganda tool. Some things never change.
War never changes and Disney's whimsical although behind the times PSAs also never changes.
Man, I haven’t seen this in decades!
I live on a Farm where West Nile is bad, we would cut the weeds in a pond in our backyard where yes lots of “wigglers” are just bobbing on the surface. We sometimes put dish soap or vegetable oil too, however most of the time we let the fish eat them.
Hamton: Maybe we can watch the special episode of tiny toons adventures.
00:05:00 - announcer: this week on tiny toon adventures!
Ah, back when Disney had the balls to do stuff like this, now they try to pretend they never did it
The seven dwarfs are so cute 💕
The heroic dwarfs
Because this short was made for the U.S. Government, it was never copyrighted and automatically entered the public domain.
Something disturbingly psychotic about the 7 dwarves delighting in extermination 😂
Only against Mosquitos.
Wow this is extremely rare, i didn't know disney made something like this😮
Neither did I, I saw they made the cat short and the truth about Mother Goose, but I did not know about this, until now.
i know for a fact that disney did do war cartoons during WW2@@dreamguardian8320
Yeah, no thanks to the oil on the water. lol. My dad and I just cut the weeds around our ponds to get help reduce mosquitoes.
Here in mexico mosquito is a common worry because they transmite dengue influenza an other disease but we follow these procidues
Than 20 years later “Silent Spring” would be published
I'm just so perplexed as to why they choose the seven dwarves, of all characters they chose them to be in an educational shorts about malaria
Polluting the environment to protect the health of the world honestly has the same energy as "WE DID IT PATRICK! WE SAVED THE CITY!"
This television movie is amazing
Thanks for uploading!
Feels like a cut content of Snow White, where the 7 dwarves fulfill other tasks besides mining for gems.
7:56: Burying trash is NOT good anymore. We can recycle a lot of it.
But it has mosquitoes.
It's so cute when Snow White's animal friends pitched in.😊❤
Gus is the ghost dwart chains prisoner from Haunted Mansion.
For anyone looking at this as a learning video, please do not put oil in the water. It's bad for the environment and illegal.
This is like going to the sea to save seals…
BY KILLING SHARKS!
This is short film is of historical interest. But pouring gasoline, oil, and pesticides into water isn't exactly a bright idea. I do remember in the 1960's these methods were uses, and we paid for it with undrinkable water.

8:46 RIP frog
If frogs got malaria from eating mosquitos, they'd be extinct by now. Same with spiders catching them in their webs.
It's the mosquito's bite that gets the disease into your blood. Once the insect hits the frog's digestive tract, it's done biting for good.

People say that Covid-19 was spread by bats. Imagine if Disney made a cartoon like this and made bats look like villainess monsters.
Why wasn't Snow White in this short?
This was meant to be an educational skit commissioned by Walt Disney as a cautionary review and tale to promote the prevention of malaria. The first ever Disney princess was not required to be included for it so the animators of this short simply decided not to
