- A swarm of moths tear into "Ye Olde Costume Shop" as one pretty girl moth is beguiled by a hypnotic candle flame. The male moth ignores his lady to chow down on a hat. He notices her trapped in a spider web with the fire attacking and makes some attempts to save her. The Moth and the Flame is a Silly Symphony that debuted on April 1, 1938. Most of the time, the flame is a caricature of a Latin lover. But for a few seconds at one time, it takes on the caricatured appearance of Walt Disney. This is a beautiful classic silly symphony cartoon that's almost forgotten. I hope you like it.

I had never seen this silly symphony before and believe me that is saying something! It’s absolutely sweet. I just love it.

These wonderful cartoons used to be featured on the Disney Channel in the 80s. We have a VHS tape where we recorded some hours of it. This was one of the shorts on it. For some reason the part where the mask's face melted and turned from happy to sad always stuck with me.

Funny...I was sitting here and had a flash back of that face and couldn't remember what it was from and been looking for about an hour now and searched for disney cartoon fire scenes and some how this popped up and it all came rushing back when I seen the name and the first few seconds and it all came back from 30 years ago. Glad I found it or I wouldn't have slept tonight...lol Also the flame turning blue was the other flash back but couldn't remember.

I remember this silly symphony and it teaches about temptation.
Makes me think this is what happens when you mess with fire. Jealousy is a problem even in our society today.
I feel bad for the guy who has to come back to his house full of moths,things are burnt and water is everything.
I don´t know if it was just me, but as a (little) child I had a kind of impression that in a number of their old shorts Disney seemed to love burning butts form characters of theirs; probably not so "fashionable" nowadays... This moth, some gang in a western Mickey short, and even the main characters (Donald, Pluto, Goofy and Mickey himself) they all went at some moment through that harrowing experience. Those scenes impacted me as a child a great deal.

It's actually the moth caterpillars who eat things like wool. I like moths and think they're cute, but ended up with an infestation of pantry moths and had to put my foot down. They were eating paper towels and all kinds of odd stuff, no real damage but it got really annoying having moths and little caterpillars that looked like maggots everywhere.
I never realized the girlfriend was portrayed as a cheater when she noticed the flame. She ought to be grateful her boyfriend didn't notice her dance moves towards the flame.
I think she was probably mocking the flame, maybe.
Either that, or the flame was literally hypnotic- at least until it tried aggressively to catch her and set everything on fire.
I think it's a spoof off the old line about how moths simply cannot resist the flickering glow of a fire. _Like a moth to the flame_ is a very old saying about following irresistible and foolish desires to one's detriment.

@@JMarieCAloveyou shouldn't oversimplify things. cartoons in that time were not exactly the same as today. this was 90 years ago. you should try to put it into perspective. a girl deliberately showing bare legs and underwear to a man (the flame)? it's a very strong sexual innuendo for 1938.

This cartoon can be said the most hated, because the moths are the bad ones for entering the shop without permit, as well destroying products meant for customers.
And the flame should have think smart, he could have multiply himself since he left fires everywhere. Means he should able to make more helping hands since everything here is burnable.
I wish I could find and still watch the VHS copy we had of this. Brings back memories of when my kids were little.

I don't remember seeing this Disney cartoon, and I never had the Disney channel. Of course today the true Disney does not exist. Walt Disney and his authentic brand have been dead a long, long time.

I don't think the flame looked like Disney, Looked more like if Cab Calloway was a cartoon character and not just lip synched.
It does resemble King Dice (a character based directly off of Cab Calloway) quite a bit

so let me get this story straight-
a company of pests breaks into a house and starts to destroy property,
the fire who lives there flirts with the mothgirl who takes the bait after her boyfriend forget about her in favor of food,
after some playing around she decides no, the fire is persistent and chase her, starting to burn down the property to get to her,
the other moths drench the place and kills the guy who lives there.
