The part where the mom cries because that’s all she can provide and the kids still are so grateful makes me tear up every time
Yep, I love how even though those children were poor they still had respect and integrity, as we know some children act out, become bullies, lose self respect etc. etc. This is the way that it is supposed to be that is why those children got blessed, I love the message that this cartoon radiates.
Same
😭😭😭😭😭
I know such nostalgia it's so sad but true children today are such brats and don't consider the feelings of their own parents. I like this short cartoon
@@artgarcia5977 true.
Oh my god, I remember seeing this as a child and being absolutely heart broken. This movie has not left my brain ever since.

Same! I grew up poor & STILL felt worse for them.
Same.
was it the part when the mom cried?
Same. This movie was so powerful it's my first memory as a child and I've often thought about it over 35 years until RUclips brought it into my life once again.
They may be poor, but these two children are grateful to have friends and family. They are also well mannered and well behaved
Exactly Max and Dave Fleischer made this cartoon during the great depression is a reminder of America’s dark pass that we should never repeat again
in poverty humbles people
Well-mannered and well-behaved you don't know what kids are
@@pigdictator4558unfortunately, that’s not always true. Poverty can also make people bitter, hard and angry.
It's just an animation bro 😂
I was poor as a child and my parents did their best just like this mom. It makes me cry to see this.
Also, mindblowing visuals for 1936!!
That's Fleischer studios for you.
This is typical animation for the era.

"Typical"? This is from one of the top two competitors in the industry.

The Tailor, the Baker, and the Toy Shop owner have heart of golds!
now they just need to find a contractor that can help them fix up that broken down shack they're living in, or hopefully build them a new one.
This is what I remembered from this movie the most. It's always been my favorite
These three are living proof of the good that the world is capable of
They're perverts. They're trying to pay the troll toll.
@YOURMOMGOESTOCOLLEGE they do something good and you try to twist it into something bad, that tells me all i need to know about you
I used to watch this cartoon with my grandpa, he would always tell me to appreciate the things I have and how hard my parents worked to support us. We were poor, but we were happy.
rw:i remember something like that from a toystory short and this little Angel cat would say at the end of the short"Be thankful for your Gifts,They're all around you".^_^ until he mysteriously vanished outta thin air.
My mother was raised in a modest home that did not have running water or electricity. That home was filled with love and integrity. Mum cherishes her memories now. I liked reading your post 👍🏽
Praise God
Poor is relative. If you have a large garden producing tons of food and is able to live comfortably, then what is poverty ? You are here on earth for experiences, and money is only a tool if you can produce those things with the help of nature and land... so its
Were poor.
I remember crying over this as a kid. Age 33 and it STILL brings me to tears!
I remember living this . . . as a kid. To this day . . . in my dreams . . . I dream of being in a Diner where every kind of food, I love, is there for me to eat.
This episode came out during the great depression of the 1930s my friend this is just a reminder of what children were going through during that time
America was going downhill. A lot of people lost their homes. A lot of people are living in the streets.

Traumatizing Children since 1923
This is a beautiful cartoon.
It shows empathy towards the less fortunate ❤
How sad and how kind of the people who helped the family. No child should go to bed cold and hungry anywhere in the world. There's enough food.
That’s kind of reminds me of countries like India part of Africa part of Mexico and parts of Brazil people are not born poor it’s just a greediness of others
It’s not our fault the world is messed up technically it is but we try our best to make the world better
@@luisjaime2567 Actually, people ARE born poor BECAUSE of the greediness of others... which only makes it even worse. Capitalism is so messed up.

That part gets to me brother my mom always tells me to be great for the food you have I grew up the same way, almost but my mom always told me to be grateful
Least him & his sister had a mother unlike Oliver Twist
I use to watch this with my family when I was quite little in the early 2000's. My grandma would compare this to her time growing up during the Great Depression, and I never forgot it. Somehow this cartoon was able to bridge that gap and helped me be grateful for what I have rather than what I don't. Rest easy Grandma. I will always remember you through this cartoon, and I will show my children when they are born.
I’m sorry to hear what your grandma was going through my friend, but it was hard at the time America was going to the great depression. It’s this is a reminder of what the country was going through
Who knew the Fleischer brothers can make people cry
Your grandparents were my parents. It's all mom ever talked about.
My grandma was the exact opposite. Granny lived by the dollar and died by the cigarettes.
This cartoon was written during the great depression.
He fact that they were dirt poor during the Great Depression totally went over my head as a kid. I was just mesmerized by the fascinating animation.
The Fleischer brothers were animated cartoons during the great depression, and this is just a reminder with children were going through
Hunger starvation lack of medicine America was becoming a Third World country in the 1930s
Historical context:
.
This cartoon was made during the last years of The Great Depression in USA. The cartoon somewhat reflected what happened those times.
Another Historical thing about this cartoon: It is the first Fleischer Cartoon to be produced in full 3 Strip Technicolor.

Im 33, and had this on VHS when i was a kid. Watched it so many times. Nice to revisit it
😍
Know whats crazy? This came up in my recommendations after watching other video on that vhs "christmas comes but cone a year". I'm 34 myself, we probably had the same exact vhs bro!
Im 3 years younger and also seen many old cartoons, this one in special feels very nostalgic
No way, we’re the same age and I too had the Fleisher vhs cartoons
I’m 34 and had a couple of these vhss with these old cartoons on them which I would watch regularly as a kid. It’s strange to think that at the time I guess I just thought they were the shows for that time(or maybe a little bit old at least) but they actually would already have been around 60yrs old by that point.
I'm 32, and me and my sister grew up with this cartoon, especially around Christmas. My parents also grew up with this, and I see why they wanted to share it.
same and I'm 31
When I watch something like this it just reminds me of how lucky I am and how fortunate I am to have what I have
My mom always told me to be grateful the little things that God gives you even if you believe in him or not
Same and I'm 33 Thank you for uploading the video I remember my childhood days! ❤🤗
Yep. I’m almost 35 and had that same video in the 90s.
Makes me sad and very thought provoking. Don't see cartoons like this anymore. I think all children should watch this especially around Christmas time just so they can see how very lucky they are. Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤🌷🌷🌷❤❤❤

It’s a sad reality with children in Africa in our grandparents had to go through
Yes that I agree with :) I just love and adore this cartoon :):):)
That's exactly why I put this on for my kids, it's not too hard hitting but they can see that not everyone has what they have.
@@luisjaime2567 Yes, it's sad, but why does Africa do poorly?
Genesis 9:25
25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.
Cannan was Ham's son. Ham means burnt or black. Africa was cursed by God for what Ham did to Noah.
Now you know why African, in fact most dark-skinned peoples, do not thrive!!
I am watching this on my 61st birthday. saw it many years ago, it made me cry them, it made me cry today.

If they would imagine their mom also being happy in a dreamland, having fun with them, that would be touching
This is a reminder of what America was going through back in the great depression of the 1930s. This is what our grandparents had to go through. It was hard on them.
Children of that age don't really have empathy yet, so this is totally normal
I'm amazed by this handmade, totally handmade, truly handmade cartoons. not one pre or post processed image by computer. parallax scrolling, wonderful colours, fluid animations. unbelievable hard work behind.
I just love how all three of those men took time out of their day to give this poor family a free meal. As a kid, I did not appreciate that as much as I do now.
also if you see at the beginning, they probably put that wood for the kids

Now I'm a dad and both of these babies look and act like mine....I can't stop crying. We aren't doing anywhere near as bad as I was when I was a kid and I think this cartoon helped with that.
This is an American culture treasure. The rotoscope filming is somewhat rare. And it presents such good values for children to learn. Just wonderful!

the ending gave me chills!! The way they eat their dessert before their dinner is so cute. I love how they were still grateful and thanked their mom even after she cried. Such sweet children, we must all raise our children to be humble 💕
The baker and other restaurant owners appear to be Italian descent, which also made a statement in this era! What a touching cartoon. I had never seen it before and it brought me to tears. So many suffered during the great depression, and then they lived through the horrors of WW2.
The most violent storms create the brightest rainbows
When you're around an Italian you will never go hungry.
Brings tears to my eyes.. i used to tell bedtime stories of a candyland to my brothers and sisters before bed, to help prevent bad dreams, and the idea came from this cartoon.
Plus, we were pretty poor, and went hungry a few times, so this just resonates with me. I love old Fleischer brothers cartoons.
I also like Christmas comes but once a year from the Fleischer brothers too 💖☮️

Before Walt Disney became king of animation, the Fleischer brothers were the kings of animation

Man, it’s like looking at a depressing reality of what would happen if Popeye left Olive Oyl as a single mother.
Thats what I thought as well. LOL. Is this the first version of Olive Oyl?
She always had Bluto and he was much more badas.
Bluto turned out to be an abusive sob. After Popeye's ship sank Olive Oyl & daughter we're alone. (Bluto just wanted her Marine widows pension.) Then left her with a boy baby.
Where a person is when he is old, he may remember his situation when he was the age of children. If he was 60, 70, 80, or 90 years old, he must remember when he was a child. Children’s lives are wonderful and beautiful.❤
Old classics is gold classics.
This made me nostalgic, heartbroken and I'm crying, but I feel so happy to know that despite the hardships, my mom did what I could say right now almost the impossible, to raise us and we weren't rich, nor terribly poor, our needs were met and we had what we could. We were happy with it. I remember these cartoons and my childhood comes. My mom loves this style of cartoons and I know she would love to see them. Unfortunately back then, we saw them with voices in Spanish, so I can't find the doub version in Spanish, but I'm sure she'll love to watch them again.
I grew up with these cartoons as a kid this one right here really made me cry and my mom always told me to be happy of the country you’re living in her grandparents had it rough But they still made it through

I had a DVD with all these cartoons! All those Mel-O-Toons, and the classic Superman, and Betty Boop!
My mom always joked about how her cheapness with DVDs when we were growing up was what led me to studying animation!
Think we had the same VHS. This sweetness destroyed me then, it’s destroying me now, lol.

I want to think that at the end of this short, the Baker graciously gave their mother a job and she would bring home the left over baked goods.

It's wild how a child can see the best in everything.
I seen this as a child and just thought It was a fun cartoon.
But watching it as a 39 year old I see the truth to this and honest to God it's bringing tears to my eyes.
I don't know wether I'd rather be ignorant to such things like I was as a child or to feel and known how it truly is.
The prospect of ignorance is only phesable in ignorance alone for once one becomes aware there is nothing that can remove that awareness.

This video, along with a few others inspired me to give 3 of my top students who were very poor a ps5 for each one of them, as well as a bunch of accesories, school supplies and a lot of food, i'm an elementary school teacher from mexico. The sweet smile of the grateful, well behaved children has no price.
Fleischer Studio stories with kids are some of the best stories... It's so often about kids who need something and even if they don't behave as well as demanded of them in that time, they barely ever get punished. It's full of love. And despite the quality of the videos and the deterioration, really well animated, especially the backgrounds.
Memory childhood.....I got it worse when I was young. I'm glad I watched it again 😊😊❤❤
I haven't seen this since I was a little kid and we had a VHS of all old and classic cartoons.
It definitely hits differently as an adult with kids than it did when I was the kid.
I managed to hold back the tears when the mom started crying because that's all the food there was, but I lost that composure when they pulled up their little blankets and they were so riddled with holes that they didn't even cover their little bodies. 😭
I first watched this when I was 4, and I vividly remembered key details of it. So when I was bored one day I looked it up and found it. Brings back memories of how positive and innocent I was for only remembering the dream portion 😊. But at the same time, it’s horribly sad! This is a sad reality for a vast majority of people worldwide.
I've first seen this when I was 7 years old. I am 42 years old and this still makes me cry
The music is so touching
Beautiful cartoon such grateful children 😍 knowing that they're mother is struggling but still manages to give them food on the table and put a roof over their heads
As a kid, I never thought this was sad. I loved it because of the food areas they walked through in Dream Land.

Breaks my heart so hard every single time
2:45 i just realized that song playing in the background is “schubert serenade”
I would argue that, over "be grateful for what you have" as many are commenting, the main theme of this piece is community and empathy.
The quality of life this woman and her children have is unacceptable. They spend their days unequipped for the cold, gathering materials off the street for their dilapidated house instead of going to school.Their only food was a loaf of old bread, the mother isn't even shown eating. They don't have electricity in the mid-1930s. Their blankets are threadbare and inadequate. They only have enough food in their dreams.
Each merchant on that street corner saw the children and came together to charitably give away some of their wares so that the children could not only be happy, but so the family could survive.
Those merchants could have been like a number of passersby and ignored the starving kids. One even said he knows where the family lives, he is perceptive and has had this family on his mind before. This gesture is a display of unabashed, no-strings-attached generosity. It's what makes this cartoon so beautiful. They foster the future by keeping the community alive. Those with help those without. This is how we should live.
To say the children should be grateful for what they have, while yes, being composed through adversity is a virtue, it only does so much. We should appreciate what we do have, yes, but those who can help should help. This cartoon would be very different if the merchants came with nothing and said "See? Be grateful for what you have!"
Nobody should be grateful for the Great Depression. It was the greed of banks and the wealthy in the speculative market that got us there, so many innocents impoverished and starved over something they had nothing to do with. Jobless parents abandoning children clad in glour sacks because they couldn't provide for them. It's nothing to be grateful for.
It's great that the children are appreciative of their community's generosity, but given their circumstances, how else would they be?
كانت ايام جميله عندما اشاهد مثل هاذيه الافلام ابكي ع زمنا الجميل اسال الله ان يكون زمن اولادنا اجمل وان يتعلمو حب الخير والبساطة والاحساس بوجع الأخرين

Agreed, So beautiful
Watching this through VHS, younger me understood it as poor. Now that I’m 40, I understand it as Great Depression poor. I can’t imagine.
I'm 30 years old, I was watching and I'm 7 years old. Those years passed quickly☹️
I watched this whole thing through. My head instantly goes to Grimm's darker versions. When the Kids go to sleep, they die due to malnourishment. Their bodies float up to heaven, and when they wake up, they see a feast. Somewhere in Dreamland seems to me a darker version, and Parallels the story of The Little Match Girl. My mind sees this story interpretation through Grimms and Perrault's lens.

Always tear up bad, when I watch this. The end is what makes the tears come down. Love the old cartoons.
Knowing that many children still suffer from poverty and fatigue and do not have their most basic rights, this matter breaks my heart 💔💔💔

As a kid this movie thought me to be grateful for what i was given .
How our society is corrupt that with so much abundance on this earth, there are those who have to live in such a way. This cartoon is not fictional there are many who live this way. The sad part is that the earth could be a paradise an abundant garden producing so much food that there is no shortage of food across the world but the ignorance of the people, this is the result.
The mother has the same body type of Olive Oyl....this is after all a Fleischer cartoon!

This is my FAVORITE cartoon. It got me through some tough times as a kid and to this day I get emotional watching it. I think of it often and had to search to find it. No one ever knows what it is but that’s fine. It’s great to see others who love it just as much ❤
This cartoon means so much to me.
It doesn’t matter how many times I watch this. It’s always magical! ❤
I used to watch this a lot as a kid.. we had it on a vhs tape full of looney tunes or old cartoons or something. I'm amazed i found it.. i used to always get so emotional watching it.
Beautiful and appealing to people generosity and sense of humanity and mercy to help others.
Como os desenhos antigos eram mais bonitos e cheios de valores bons.
Since the Baker was the one who mainly came up with the idea, and knew where the children live, I’m sure he offered the children’s mother a job in the bakery, such as probably being his right hand person.
I sure hope so...
My brother and I used to watch these cartoons and they have never gotten old. My mother worked very hard we were poor. Father wasn't in the picture. So their would be times of nothing for Christmas, not even a tree. We would pretend we got gifts. We would go without food sometimes so what we would do is space it out eat one day and go without the next or so day. Sometimes I was so hungry my brother would distract me with stories. I have never taken anything for granted in my life since. ❤
