Not surprising that with all that is the going on you experience anxiety, even depression. It’s good that you are open to discussing this, showing that you can take care of yourself and your family. This takes strength and humility. Be proud of yourself.
It’s good to see you outside working on preseason tasks! I know you will whittle those tasks down to a manageable level, just like I know all our prayers are helping Gina’s recovery. Don’t fret, you are included in those prayers. Breathe deep and enjoy the beauty around you as you work to accomplish your dreams. 💕😊

I absolutely love Fall - the changing of the leave, the cool, crisp air, etc. I’m glad Al, that you took some time to decompress a little bit. You work so hard to provide for your family and your animals and sometimes forget to take care of yourself. Taking just one day off for yourself can change and renew your focus. Praying for your strength and peace of mind. I pray for Gina’s healing as well.

Thanks for sharing your personal struggles with anxiety and depression - so many of us are in the same boat! Love seeing the progress of your beautiful homestead and look forward to your first winter on the "big lot"! SUGGESTION: Please tuck the strings of your hoodie inside so they don't tangle with the branches as they are pulled through the chipper! One can never be too careful when using such tools. ALSO, maybe you can connect the chipper key directly to the chipper so you won't ever lose it.

Try hitching up a tandem of the wagon/trailer and chipper. Chipper output into wagon/trailer and then you’ve got chips to mulch and centrally compost. Even on our large farm, it makes sense to centralize the chips resources, just like sawn lumber and firewood.

My wife suffered badly from anxiety and depression about 16 years ago - too much stress with teaching and in the end it came close to a heart attack. However she had a stent fitted, gave up teaching and slowly over the next 5 years she came right. At her worst times she would just sit on the couch crying... supporting her was difficult. Anyway - it was her faith that got her through the worst of it and her favorite prayer was "be still and know that I am God"

Your comment about those who built before you struck home. My dad built the home I grew up in, we moved in in ‘51, I was 9 months old. He didn’t have the tools you have, dug the basement with pick & shovel & laid all the blocks. Like you, he learned by doing & studying, he did get help with electric & plumbing, which he learned & utilized as he did more. Everything else was self taught. I can’t imagine what he would have accomplished in todays world. He never got to finish all his projects, sadly passing when he was only 60. His generation & those before him amaze me at what they did, just as you & Gina are doing now. One thing you all have in common - a never ending supply of elbow grease! Prayers for Gina & a good recovery & for the rest of the family during this challenging time.

suggestion: tandem tow the shredder and a light weight large bucket, or open box type trailer to capture the chips from the shredder, and bring 'em home with you for mulch/compost, etc., OR get that electric mini truck up there at OGP with the back end lift to capture the chips. No shovelin' !! Thank you for pics of your gorgeous OGP Autumn!

Right now, we've almost completed the dry-in of our upstate NY homestead house. But mother nature HATES us. It rained nonstop the minute we began building, and finally let up long enough to get up the first floor. Then more rain, and we FINALLY got our gable ends done, and some rafters (We follow Ken's Karpentry and used his method for the loft space 2nd floor.) The first floor area was spray foam insulated and staying dry with a huge tarp over the 2nd floor, but then last night, we had gale winds which destroyed, then blew the tarp off the house, and of course the rains began. Now we're trying to clean up from that and the weather forecast NOW shows of the next 11 days, 10 days of rain/snow and one cloudy day. (Try generating any solar from that). So we're hoping our Amish friends are going to help us get the roof up in the next day or two and we can FINALLY get dried in. Oh, and it's just me and the wife (ages 65 and 62) doing all of the work with the exception of our Amish friends offering to come help raise the roof. (maybe I misunderstood them?). Anyway, we get pretty depressed and despondent thinking we may not even survive the first winter up here, and then something comes along and we're back on course. I hope that happens tomorrow once again!

Just a comment about fueling up the chipper - I recently saw a video on another channel where the guy, who's lived on a farm his entire life, said that his dad instilled in him that he should ALWAYS top up the gas tank right after using equipment so that he always knew it was full and ready to go the next time he needed it. Wow - the water in the river/creek is so clear.

If it sits over winter without a fuel stabilizer in it the carburetor will gum up and it will be hard to start. Maybe with older fuels it wasn't so bad. We run all our gas powered things dry before we store them for the winter. We try to buy the non-oxygenated fuel to run our small engines too.

You are so right! As much as I love the building, I love to work outside & with the animals. We all need a change of scenery. You've created some beautiful scenery while building a new home & farm. Little Man & Camo are some beautiful goats! Praying for Gina's healing & the family's strength in supporting her! Love you guys!

I love how you said it's hard to be down by your "Other Half". What a wonderful tribute to your love for and dedication to each other. That is how it's meant to be but so often people forget it and don't actually live it. Thanks for sharing. God bless!

You have every "right" to feel overwhelmed. People who do not have winter don't recognize the pressure fall puts on us to get those necessary outside things done. Plus you don't have Gina helping and have reason to be stressed some with her operations and recovery. I'm glad to hear she is doing well, we are all pulling for a quick and complete recovery.

i wish everyone on earth can understand what you said about life happening for us and not to us. i learned that lesson. in my christian life i have always been taught that life is one lesson after another whether we see or understand it's value at the time. in 2012 my 43 yr old who was my best friend went to sleep and never woke up. my whole world fell into a deep hole. long story short, i needed a psychiatrist who specializes in GRIEF DEPRESSION and incredibly in 3 months i was learning to live with life. 2 months later my other son had heart failure and more and needed to move in with me [he's still with me]. had i not found myself i would not have been there for the other son. god sees and knows our future. 2 yrs later i started thinking about my estranged sister. i had a need to find her and make contact with her. i found her. she was in a bad way. her oldest son was in the process of dying from brain tumors. i told her about my son and she said 'tell me all the details because i don't know how i am going to get through this.' so everything bad and good i had experience i was able to give to her and i was able to be there for her when his death happened. yes al, life happens for us. i am forever a believer. love your videos and journey. i pray gina keeps getting better every day. may god always go before your family.

Don’t let things adversely affect your life Al! The beauty of the land you own is there are so many things that you can do. If nothing else get in your side by side and go for a ride. I imagine it is every thing that is going on now. Remember life is to short. Enjoy what you have and where you are. Praying for you and you family.

A granddad who is around for them is a great gift to those children - much more so than a truck driver! Driving is hard on one's body.Thrive in your new role. My time with my granddad was the best of life!

Me too. Went on Ssdi due to MS 20 years ago and became the babysitter for a newborn granddaughter. Then another 5 years later. Got to be a bit much and sort of had a breakdown after 2 seizures. Just take care of yourself and your health no matter what the family needs are.
