AL I’ll make a suggestion: lay you 4 pieces of chain link fence or some kind of fencing at least 1.5’ wide on the ground around all four sides of the coop base outside. This will keep raccoons 🦝 and skunks from digging under the coop. This way you can move the pieces of fence each time U move the coop. Because they will dig under the coop at night if they’re hungry enough.
Good idea, CC. I can imagine it wouldn't be too hard for a critter to dig under an edge to gain access, and that would be bad. Anything that can be done to inhibit their entry would be good. With some roofing panels to back up the tarp from bear push-in, it would be fairly stout to resist predator ingress. (we hope!) Of course, this video was shot earlier this week - we hope the test chickens made it and didn't become predator meals!
@@samvalentine3206 absolutely 😉👍
@@brianharries no it won’t, move the coop and lay 4 pieces of wire on the ground around all four sides ! It’ll take 1 minute or less. This keeps Predators from digging under the cage. I don’t see why you say it would be hard to do a 2 foot wide piece of wire the length of that cage and four pieces of it and just lay it down on the ground beside the cage that’s not very hard to do. 🤷🏻♂️😏
@@brianharries you don't think AL can drag 4 pieces of fencing 20 feet across the ground when it is time to move the chicken tractor?
I could do that and I'm 5 months pregnant 😅
Definitely agree with this plan. I’m 70yo and can do that also.
My uncle uses a mobile connect camera since he lives 3 hours away from his hunting property. Make sure to have a heavy duty latch that is racoon proof. They can open lift latches. You may also want to get cattle panels to protect tarp area on the roof in case a predator tears it. A secondary perimeter with a movable electric fence is handy too.
Just a word of advice, you need to have some hardware cloth underneath the tarp. The raccoons can climb up and tear right through the tarp I have just learned this from experience.
Also wrap some poultry net or hardware cloth around the bottom sides of the coup. Raccoons will pull the chickens through the holes in the sides and snack on your chickens that way.
Yes! I'm a little worried about the top being a vulnerable point, too, with just a tarp and no metal to keep out the critters. AL: Maybe if you could surround the coop with a portable electric fence, that would add the needed protection from predators.
They're right. A bear would rip through that tarp in two seconds.
You might want to put a hot wire around the chickens for added protection. Like you did with your bees. Glad Gina is recovering well. Thanks for taking us along on your adventures.
Like this suggestion
Poly wire hasn’t failed me yet. I use it for the meat birds. I have a chickshaw for egg birds and I don’t protect that with electricity. It seems to keep the birds safe. I see predators on trip cameras in there area too.
I was also going to suggest that. I always have a hot wire around my coop for predators
I would want something more than a tarp to make it predator proof - metal like the sides or wooden and maybe a night time shed within the coop.
Love the new coop. I am worried though about bears ripping the top. Also agree with CC Rider, you need some chain link on the ground around the coop so critters can't dig under. Otherwise, it looks like a wonderful sturdy coop and since it will hold so many birds, you will only be having to move one coop of meat birds and that will be a real time saver for you. I am so happy to hear Gina is recovering as expected in the right time frame. Y'all have a Blessed day.
So happy to hear Gina is doing well. Love the tractor/coop. Looks sturdy! Have a Blessed day.
Glad to hear things are progressing! Might I suggest surrounding the coop with some electric mesh about 5 or 6 feet around it to train predators to stay away. I've seen coyotes slam against the mesh repeatedly to panic the birds closer to the other side, where another one can bite at the birds. Also have seen a bear peel a car open to get at food. The electric fence also works around the garden with bears too.
The new outdoor chicken coop looks good, I trust it will be as robber safe as it needs to be. The tarpaulin roof does not sound totally proof against all comers. We know you have an interesting collection of threats, just waiting for a chance to attack. I guess you could always add wire netting to further beef up any protection if it looks like being needed. Smaller animals might just want to burrow under the edges to get breakfast, lunch or supper according to the time of day. Do you have plans for any other protection measures?
Suggestion: Put Wire mesh on the roof under the tarp as some predators might be able to tear/chew through the trap.
Hi. Been praying for you both. What you shared about depression and anxiety gave me hope for my son. Just to stress to you about the coyotes...please make sure Figaro is safe...I've seen other youtuber's cats attacked. We love Figaro :) and will continue to lift you both up in prayer. Blessings and Peace in the name of Jesus to you both.
Thank you
Amen, Lisa... nicely said!
Coyotes will draw out and kill dogs of all sizes as well.
Coyotes keep the rodent populations down. They are good neighbors with the right fencing and structures in place. I love to hear ours howling it up at night, that and the owls.
@@tagladyify yep. They will send a cute puppy out to whine and draw in your guard dog. Then they attack from all sides.
Hey Al. This came highly recommended to me for our area they are called Kittmip solar powered animal repeller/ predator deterrent. I am going to use them in the winter when the electric fencing doesn’t work well in the deep snow we get. Praying for a speedy recovery for Gina. Keep up the great work. And be safe.
Nice idea about the chicken coop but if a bear wants in it can rip that tarp apart I would replace it with a wood roof instead of a tarp
I agree my cousin lives in the Adirondack Mountains and raises pigeons. He had a bear that ran right through is run for them. He lost quite a few of them. It was the one and only time. But he never did that again. He built a small one right on the side of the building.
Glad to hear Gina is doing well, we are all wanting her recovery to go as fast as possible.
Good morning Al.
Nice coop. Praying for Gina every day.
I’m in Nor cal. We are still recovering from the fires.
Many cougars, bears and coyotes are taking off with many pets. Mine included.
The bear took out the neighbors bee hives.
Coyotes left, well, they left evidence of a sad moment for someone’s pet.
You will need a sturdy roof. And you will need chain link barriers along the base edges. Raccoons dig well.
Best wishes for success. Sorry to be so dismal.
I hope it goes well.
Get some weld mess or use some siding board and finish the roof of the chicken tractor so it’s full enclosed, then put the tarp on. The trap is a weak point and predators will get in.
I wonder if that tarp will hold all that snow and ice they get too
Thanks Al for updating us on Gina’s recovery. Continues PRAYERS 🙏. Vinny 🇺🇸
I like the look of the portable chicken pen. I, like others, am concerned about small predator critters digging under the walls of the pen. Hopefully those brave test hens will survive. Once you get your shop and welder up and running I'm sure you can build an improved version of something similar. Glad that Gina is recovering nicely, it just takes time. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Goooooooooooood morning Al , Gina and Olivia! I hope that Gina is feeling better and stronger each and every day!
Howdy Richard! Nicely said... we all hope and pray Gina is improving day by day!
Blessed morning Lumnah family! Wow Al, what a chicken tractor! I have never seen one like that. I was thinking you would move the wood chicken coup with you. It is nice seeing your animals on the new land.
I pray Gina is healing well and will see her smiling face soon. 🙏🙋🇺🇸🕊
Howdy Praise! You said it! I'll join you in prayers for Gina, and add Olivia and Al to the mix... plus Figaro, Tanner, Pluto and the goats!
I would think that coons or coyotes could did under the fence and get the birds. Could they possibly even rip the tarp and drop in? My friend lost 38 birds to raccoons this summer . She was so upset she has not replaced them. I wish you well on your adventure. Gina is in my prayers. The backdrop in the beginning of this is absolutely gorgeous !!!
I would have taken 6 of the old flock since they are not laying well anymore instead of your pullets. Al will prediators be able to dig under the cage edge without an electric fence around it?
By now, as this video is already a few days to a week old, those test chickens may be history... hopefully not!
You may need to also cover the roof with the fencing material also to prevent animals from jumping in through the roof of the coop. You can build it.
Aren't you going to Trailer up some of the old Chicken coups from the old farm, you build some pretty nice coups down there.
We will
Al, those chickens didn’t sound like they were volunteering to go to the off road property!😄
Good Morning Lumnah Acres Family!!! The trees are getting really colorful. I am amazed at how beautiful nature can be. The chicken coop is nifty. I hope the test batch goes well because that is one big thing to get checked off the list
Is the chicken tractir really predator proof with only a tarp on top? Coons would easily be able to chew thru the tarp, i cant even imagine it would keep a bear out? Are you planning on using a premier one fence around it?
hi, love the coop! my concern is if you have bears, it is definitely not bear proof....coons too are tricky buggers
I hope you will plan to make a perch. Nice coop. I’m a little concerned about bears tearing through the tarp.
Add chicken wire to the roof. A bobcat can slice through the tarp. They need perching bars too
Nice chicken tractor Al. Those ladies look very happy to be in there. Thanks for this. Continued prayers for Gina's recovery.
as someone who has spent a lot of time in new hampshire....its a land of moose...bears,,,coyotes..skunks..possum....wood chucks....deer...fox...wolverines..many kinds of eagle/hawk like birds....to name a few!
i feel nervous for the test chickens
(holding up my hand) Me too!
Surely if you have bears around they can just rip straight through the tarp
Prayers Gina for continued healing and recovery ❤️🩹.
Small predators like Weasels, Possums, Raccoons, Fox, Bobcat, and Coyotes will find it very easy to get into/under your chicken tractor. Of course if the bears want them, they will tear the whole thing apart to get them. Good Luck.
Good Morning Lumnah Family & Friends, I have been watching every video and seeing how far you've come. I've been on your journey with you for a little over 4 years now, and it has been quite an amazing journey, I've really enjoyed watching everything that you've built together and seeing how everything is brought about! God bless y'all Have a wonderful day!!
Howdy Angel! You said it perfectly! Thank you for your blessings and wish for a wonderful day - all those nice things to you and yours as well!
@@samvalentine3206 Hello there Sam!!
Gooooood Morning
We had chickens for thirty years and thought we had Fort Knox. Two weeks ago, raccoons got in (dug under railroad ties ) and got 13 of our chicks. They are relentless. We now have added an electric fence. So far so good.
Really like the mobile chicken tractor! Looks very sturdy. The idea about using fencing on the ground around the perimeter is a great one. A smaller fencing grid opening , like 1” would be good, extending 1 foot from edge and even a little bit under the edge. Predators are vicious and persistent . Loved “Who wants to go with me??? “. My thoughts “ Me, Me!!!😂”
Gina you are missed. Praying for a speedy recovery.
Another great and successful day Al. Wishing you and your family a happy future and a swift return to full health for Gina.
The foliage is so beautiful up there! I loved the shot of the tree lined with the huge boulders. Still in awe over how many you dug out. The chicken tractor looks nice for a store bought. Where are the hens going to lay, on the ground for now? I bet Gina can’t wait to get up there.
These pullets have not started laying yet.
@@tonygrimes13 Thank you, I didn’t think about that. 🤪
I would think electric fence as a must to go with any enclosures.
I might even put up some perimeter runs to introduce to the locals.
Excellent idea. Defense should be in layers of deterrents, something to fall back on before the ultimate goal is broached (hopefully not)
Al you remind me of when I was in the army, You asked for volunteers then you went in and picked them such BRAVE Chickens for this mission (Chicken Coop)!🥺
Lucky you did'nt cut open the box any deeper otherwise the tarp would have been cut. Enjoying you journey. UK
Not sure that metal coop with no metal top, just tarp, will keep a bear out, but electric fencing should help that, if it's hot enough. Hope it all works! Prayers for Gina's quick and complete recovery.
Wow loved that episode Al, made my boring Saturday night special. Happy to hear Gina is on the mend.
We had a guard donkey for our sheep 🐑 Willow was the most charismatic, loving and fierce defender of her whole family, including us! 😊 Her favourite thing to do was blast out a “GOOOOOOOD morning everyone!” as soon as the kitchen door opened 😂😂 Well, at least that what we thought she said - and of course we always yelled back! 😂
What size donkey was it?
@@brentonpickens1872 Eee-Aww Eee-Aww always was a big one.
A pair of Gelded Male donkeys are the best for predator control. We had a pair and they kept the coyotes totally off our property.
Glad to hear Gina is doing well. It's so hard to function with tubes hanging out of your body and I didn't want to say any thing before about those darn tubes but I feel for you they were a pain in my Backside. Prayers for Gina and love that chicken tractor... so cool...Thanks Al for sharing...
hooray first animals on the new farm praying for fast healing
Good morning, Al and Gina! What a glorious day! Great plan for the Chicken Coop. Hopefully it'll be pretty escape-proof, too! You know what chickens are......! ☺ Have a blessed weekend.
I'd be a little worried about bear push-in on the tarp. A bigger species of bear could stand up at the side and push in with it's paws to gain entrance. Maybe some corrugated roofing panels might make it more secure from those bruins.
@@samvalentine3206 gotta say, I'm with you on that. Coyotes could also dig under, so can chickens! How 'Predator-proof' this is remains to be seen....Have a great day! 🙂
@@samvalentine3206 A little bear could tear it apart.
@@rachelm7525 - Thanks! Hope you have a great day too!
That is a nice looking chicken tractor, I hope it protects the chickens well , and I'm so happy that Gina is continuing to get better, God Bless Her to have a awesome recovery! 😊👍💕💕💕
How are you planning on keeping predators from digging under into your new chicken shack? I'm wondering if you are going to run an electric wire around the exterior of the coop?
Time for the trail CAM to watch the uninvited guests.
The girls need a roosting bar to sleep on.
The girls need an elevated laying box(s)
You should also know the chickmahal needs the rest of the walls for SNOW protection.
Blessings to you and the family Al. As anyone can see you and your family are real
Go-getters. I pray for Gina's
Quick and safe healing. I also hope that the predators can't
Dig under the new chicken house. Maybe putting something around the bottom of it would not allow them to gain access to the birds...
Enjoy the weekend.
How awesome to finally be bringing animals to the OGP.. just hoping the coyote n bear don't become huge issues.. Prayers Gina continues to get better, We miss seeing her beautiful face on the videos..
You need a steel roof on that, not just tarp. Looks like it would not stand up to a persistent large predator and the opening are too large to keep out the smaller ones.
I see others suggesting improvements to the coop. I’ve seen others use ridged hog or cattle panels around the bottom perimeter to stop the diggers. They fold up and can clip to the sides for moving and then fold back down. Keep up the great work, looking fantastic.
You might want to add the wire on the top also, so that the predators can't tear into the tarp. What about a metal wire floor so that they can't dig under. Do you think if you put a larger wheel, it would raise the pen higher when moving it around!
You might want to put the new coop inside the yard with the goats when you bring them up! What about two guard dogs in with the animals and some guard geese for alarm system? What about a roost for the chicken to get up on at night?
I love the term chicken tractor on steroids. I first heard in from Billy on Perma Pastures Farm, but he uses it for the technique he has learned to get chickens to grow and even lay without using grain while they make yards of compost for him.
I am so delighted to see you putting out this video about homesteading. I have missed your farming videos. What a wonderful thing for you to do.
Good Morning! An ostomy IS a hernia, in that some intestine pokes out through a hole. Very important not to push any more out, or they have to surgically repair it. I would get some chain link fence panels to lay down on the ground all around your chicken tractor. Some of your predators are quite happy to dig underneath to get a nice chicken dinner. Coyotes dig holes under my chain link fence all the time, just so they can hunt rabbits on my property. I think a coop with a wire bottom on it would be more secure, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a chicken tractor. What about laying boxes?
Gooooood Morning
Howdy Guy! Good point about the ostomy. I had one of those for about 3 months and was fortunate to get it reversed. The area is still tender and that was almost 15 years ago.
I used 2 feet wide hardware cloth around the perimeter of my coop to keep digging predators out. It is lightweight easy to manage and was durable enough to get the job done.
Good Morning Al! I've been using a live game camera that is cellular and sends photos directly to your phone. Continued prayers for Gina for a speedy and pain free recovery. Maybe some solar motion lights mounted to the chicken tractor as well
The cell cam idea is good as long as there is cell phone service in your area, and there is at the OGP. Then one needs a cell plan (moultriemobile, AT&T, Verizon, etc) (for each camera) for $13 a month (per camera) on the moultriemobile annual plan - prices vary per one's needs.
"solar motion lights mounted to the chicken tractor" got my Thumbs Up

We love watching your videos! They are very well done and we are so impressed with how many things you and Gina can do. We have been praying for Gina’s recovery and health. God bless you and your family. ❤
So glad Gina is feeling better and her next appt. will be a win. My prayers are with you all. Love the chicken coop, the first ready one I've seen. Can't wait to see the goat fencing go up.
It is so awesome that you started bringing animals to the OGP!!! They always say Chicken is the gateway animal for homesteading. You might want to bring Figaro in the house for nighttime. I miss Gina but I just want her to get better. She could just come to watch you work. Pray for Gina!! Pray for the Lumnah Family as well!! Aloha from Hawaii!!!
Miss Gina there too. So glad to hear her recovery is going well. You guys are doing amazing. What a beautiful progression.
I had to chuckle when you flipped that box down and were about to open it. I said to myself, "I could never do that. My OCD would make me flip it so the top is up before opening it." Then you went ahead and did just that. LOL
Good morning Al Gina & Olivia. That new coop looks good hope it will keep the critters away & be successful.
Glad Gina is feeling a bit better but so good she is taking it easy & she can watch what your doing on you tube.
The trees look amazing.
Our prayers to Gina always be safe. Take care happy family. 🙏🙏

@@samvalentine3206 Hi Sam take care & have a great weekend to you & family.
Al, thanks for the video. So glad you all are making great progress, both in health and homestead. Blessings!
Al, are you thinking about (a) guard dog(s) for your critters?
I absolutely empathize with Gina concerning catheters that you have to live with!
Gooooood Morning Craig. We have been a bit. But we aren’t ready for one
Will the birds have a roost in the Porta-coup? Nesting boxes? At what point will they be winter housed for warmth? Sturdy & we'll made product but I couldn't figure out the dual bird use differences.
I’ve posted it 4 times to tell you of a game camera 📸 and RUclips keeps taking my comment down! So AL there’s no need in asking your subscribers to comment if RUclips is just gonna delete our comments 🤷🏻♂️!!!!! Shame on you RUclips.
RUclips only allows links from itself, it appears, CC. Makes it hard to link to stuff directly... one has to become creative to get across your information.
Im thinking if you dont fortify the chicken tractor MUCH MUCH better you'er gonna find nothing but chicken feathers the next time you come up there, that also goes for the goats as well as all your animals, You'er living in the wilderness now. These predators live by a different set of rules.
Looks like predators will burrow right under that pronto. Wire mesh needed around the base for sure. Electric fence like premier 1 too around whole thing before chickens or goats come IMO. Good luck Al..
Hi Al
Glad to hear the good news about Gina.
Nice looking chicken tractor. Looked easy to assemble.
Hope it works for you.
Just hope there aren't any predators that try to dig under it.
Can't wait to see what you suprise us with next.
In all you do be blessed and safe
So glad Gina is doing better. I'm still praying 🙏 for her. The trees are just beautiful. Can't wait for the next video.
Al, you’re NOT bringing up the ‘Test Batch’ you’re bringing up ‘The Volunteers’!
LOL! Good one!
Love the new coup, do you have any plans for a roost for them? So happy to hear that Gina's doing better. Al, I think it's time to mark your territory. Some lights with motion detectors should scare some of the critters off as well as leaving your man scent around. When do you plan on putting the siding up? You guys have a great weekend.
Apologies but it's *Coop* not coup.
Why isn't there a metal mesh roof like the sides? Won't the raccoons just eat right through the tarp. If I was a hungry raccoons, I would
I'm surprised it did not come with a roosting bar. Come night time, They're gonna be screaming where's it at!! Lol
Roosting bar and nesting boxes are optional accessories
With all the small trees and branches around, it shouldn't be too hard for Al to fix up some sort of roosting system for the birds...
@@samvalentine3206 I’m sure he will too.
my hopefully helpful critique on the this tractor: I like it,but, theroof needs wire. if a coyote jumps on it, or even a lowly raccon, they'll tear up that tarp in no time. I have seen the aftermat of what I'm descrbing, it was a racoon. Hog panels would make a lot safer.
I am hoping Gina will be rid of the bag soon, and able to come see the progress made so far. It will definitely raise her spirit.
praying for her promt recuperation.
Al, thank you for keeping us informed. I am praying for Gina’s recovery, but am also praying for you and Olivia. Strength and peace be upon you all.
The predators in my area would get under that tarp in a heartbeat. And with no chain-link fence on the bottom, they would dig under very quickly.
Ain't that new chicken coop missing some roosting pens so the chickens can get up off the ground at night? And I think you using the rope on the tarp was a good choice to make it a bit more secure, but as others have suggested it'd probably be best to replace it with someone more firm and attached to the body! Also don't forget to open up for the water in the water "feeder", seems you forgot to do that looking @ 25:25 nothing was filling up..
Great job....Again! Praying for Gina.
A beautiful Fall good morning to you also Al, Gina, & Olivia! I like the new coop.
Hey Al, I"m thinking you are going to need a few strands of electric fence to go around all your livestock areas...probably a double row fence of it. The bears will break through a fine wire or chain link to get to the chickens and goats pretty easily. I'd also suggest a large donkey to help as a livestock protector.
Hope Gina's recovery goes well. We here in the Philippines are rooting for you both. Just a thought, Do the chickens need a roost for sleeping at night?
That's a good point, Stuart. One would think a roost would be helpful. With all the natural straight small trees there, it shouldn't be too hard to cut a piece that fits in perfectly that could then be zip-tied in place, or lag-bolted from the edge through the fencing panel to hold it in place...
I was thinking the same thing when I saw the notch in the side rail. Blessings to all ❤❤
Before you start baiting the predators with chicken dinners, remember that bears are very easily repelled by electricity. One zap from a fence and they will not come around. So if you installed even one strand in a simple perimeter then bears would not be a problem for you. And a bear would noteven be slowed down by that tractor 😬
Good luck...bears pretty much go where they want. Curious strong and determined
That coop will probably keep coyotes out, but without a floor, a bear will just flip the whole thing over with one paw and help himself, even ground pegs would not stop a bear.
Looks like the bears will be eating chicken for dinner tonight
Yep. Sadly an 'open' outfit like that without electric predator fencing is like a bear lunch box. That tarp isn't going to be much of a match against a hungry bear's claws rip it wide open .
I did not see where you got the chicken tractor.
I agree with the person that mentioned adding some kind of heavy duty wire to the roof line as an additional predator deterrent.
I just lost all 8 of my chickens to, I believe, to a racoon. It ripped a 3ft. slash thru a layer of chicken wire & a layer of half inch welded wire. Devastating!
