A special bonus video in which John Green and Microsoft founder Bill Gates talk about how Ethiopia has reduced its infant mortality dramatically in the past twenty years.
This kind of thing makes me feel VERY grateful for what I have and makes me think about how I could help, even just by a little, decrees world suck. Thanks John!
I wish there were more people in the world that dedicated even a fraction of their time or energy to bettering the world like Bill Gates does. He's truly one of the most incredible people on the planet.
My 18 year old cousin recently got back from Ethiopia volunteering in a hospital for three weeks. I'm so proud of him and of you for all the awareness you're spreading about Ethiopian healthcare. Much love from Montreal x
I totally teared up reading the part of the newsletter this week with the middle school kids. They sounded so happy to be themselves and I have so much respect for that. I'm only a senior in high school, but I feel like I can learn a lot from them. I definitely wasn't self confident enough to embrace my nerdy quirks in middle school. Those kids should be so proud of themselves. I hope they stay themselves up through high school. John, Hank and their librarian, you should be so proud of your influence on these kids. You inspire me and others in the most positive way I can imagine. Thank you with all my heart. DFTBA.
It's great that Bill Gates is on the vlogbrothers channel and all, but to call it the smartest video you've ever seen? That's a bit of an exageration, don't you think?
Oh my I am so glad this bonus video series is a thing. THANK YOU SO MUCH JOHN! I THINK THIS WHOLE VIDEO SERIES ABOUT ETHEOPIA IS VERY INTERESTING AND COOL AND LEARNING ABOUT IT IS EXCITING.
ssevf You mean the billionaire who has invested the last years of his life to finding out the most efficient way to do charity ? He's not just a billionaire. As far as I know charity has become a full time job for him.
ssevf Charities as organizations only dedicate a small % to actual cause, rest goes towards pay, marketing etc. Bill is one of the few people that secured the money first, and doesn't need more to secure his own family's future. This way he can control 100% of the money given towards research or other causes at least at charity level.
Don't usually post, but this whole series is truly fascinating. The search for the solution for the problems in Ethiopia, the focus on last-mile healthcare, and innovative solutions to problems with distribution are really inspiring. Thanks for such awesome content.
1:36 Bill uses the word "we've" like I do when referring to my football team. He owns it. He shows his passion for the Ethiopian healthcare system and the part his foundation plays in it. Well done, keep up the good work!
I love videos like this. It's great that things like this are happening places, and healthcare is improving and infant mortality rates are being reduced. It has to mean so much to the people there, and it's something that we take for granted in places like Canada and the U.S.A., because we don't take the time to think about it that often.
Thanks for the special bonus video! I have spent the last 4 years (and probably the next 6) studying hard so I can work in public health. These videos are the kind of thing that keeps the fire burning in me through my long education.I want to find solutions to terrible issues like having so many child die from preventable diseases. I'll be sure to reference them when I become the Director-General of the World Health Organisation
Videos like these remind me why I love to be a Nerdfighter. I've been watching the Vlogbrothers since late 2007, so when a video like this comes around it feels like I'm sitting in the room talking to Bill Gates as well. It's crazy.
Bill Gates is truly inspiring. The fact that he has all of the money he needs to do whatever he wants with his life forever and he chooses to spend his time doing charity work and helping in third world countries is amazing.
YA BONUS VIDEOS!!!! Also, there needs to be more rich people who are interested in taking their great situations and spreading the wealth like Bill. It's really common for celebrities to donate money to various charities which is always good, but it seems like so few are actually deeply passionate about decreasing worldsuck. The world needs more celebrity nerdfighters. :D
I sincerely find all of these videos on global health compelling. I don't know if I can wait another week. I need to learn more about the world around us. It's a craving I think that all nerdfighters have.
I think Mr. Gates was very eloquent in this clip and am looking forward to seeing more of him on this channel. I was actually kind of surprised, popular media has depicted him more as a social invert. I saw someone else comment that he should be a new vlogbrother and I would like to add to that. He should be a vlogbrother from another mother
I am really loving all these videos from Ethiopia, both you discussing different issues and seeing your footage. Even if I on a logical level know that Africa is complex and its stories are many and varied, the image of Africa in my head has just not been keeping up, but by being exposed to it more I can notice my picture and instinctive idea of this enormous continent and people becoming more complex and relatable.
Thank you for sharing your experiences in Ethiopia with us. Personally, I'm learning a lot from it. I'm so grateful that I get the chance to learn about this. Thank you so much John. You've opened my eyes to a lot of what's happening in these countries, and how remarkable they are as a country for finding ways to improve life for themselves. DFTBA, John. And thank you. I'm looking forward to learning more from you about Ethiopia. I wouldn't mind if these were your regular videos. These are amazing stories of human survival. I want to do more to help them!
Hey there Catherine (I hope). I know that this is an earlier video, and so I’m very late in commenting. Until then I continued to simply hear what was said, but I wasn’t really concentrating at all on the content. I was just hearing the sound. Then, as I walked back to my phone I realised that I wasn’t sure if I was listening to John Green or Bill Gates, It took me a moment to focus that it was Bill Gates talking, and....yeah...that’s it. I thought that they sounded quite similar and that was a very surreal micro-experience. I just wanted to share this with you. Thanks for all that you do, and take care 🙂🐿 P.s I imagine that, to you this is ridiculous and funny (in a good way) and kinda like the times my mother would say (in public) how much my older brother looked like Paul McCartney - but just his eyes and nose. She would hold her hand over his mouth and insist that people see what she saw. FYI my brother looks nothing like Paul McCartney. AT ALL. For years now I will refer to him as Paul or Sir Paul and he will refer to me as Nicole. I became Nicole Kidman after our mother shouted out for all of us to come into the TV room. It was like our mother saw something completely different from everyone else...these memories still send my mind on amazing philosophical adventures 🤔😳🙂🤔
Improving health and helping people out of poverty is amazingly important work. It's so good to hear that this is actually making a difference in people's lives and positively impacting communities... meanwhile in the 1st world people have gotten so used to vaccinations that they don't understand the dangers and risks with not having them and people are deluded into thinking really strange things. It's good to see that people aren't taking the wonderful fruits of medical science for granted and its going towards the good cause of helping people that it was intended to do.
Blown away by his influence on the Age of the Geek and so impressed by the model of compassion he is showing all of us. He didn't forget to be awesome.
Dear Bill, Tossing software components into a box, shaking it about for a while and pouring it onto the floor is not the same as programming an operating system. That said, I admire your dedication to improving other people's lives. Sincerely, Me
Interesting! I didn't realize how vitally important health is to maintaining a country. I always knew it was a factor, but I didn't realize it was THE factor.
The coolers for the vaccines are such a great advance in recent years. I can't wait for more research and development to be done on administering vaccines through a nano-patch, which does not require refrigeration.
It's great to see how Bill Gates is really committed to giving intelligently. He's not just saying the words, he's actively trying to be the expert on these issues and how to solve them.
What impresses me about Nerdfighteria is also what impresses me about Bill Gates. Vlogbrothers could just be some entertaining guys on You Tube, but they took the platform and decided to do good works, like Crash Course, Kiva support and P4A. Gates could have spent the rest of his life counting his money or buying personal stuff - like islands and jets - but instead he set up the Gates Foundation to well, basically reduce World Suck. This team of John and Bill give me so much hope for the future.
No... If you took a million people somewhere and paid for their healthcare, that is great but if you take a total population of a continent for example or the world there is no magic person that can pay the healthcare bill for everyone. Healthcare must be earned to be sustainable. Those that dont earn it must depend on charity or do without. The only reason Bill Gates can act like GOD in Ethiopia is because, mostly Americans, are purchasing his products and he is spending some of his profits/wealth on their healthcare. Without free market commerce Bill would have nothing.
Lanc Mac No, see, universal healthcare is not exclusionary toward privatized healthcare. If you want better healthcare, you can pay for it. The important part is that if you can't afford healthcare, you AT LEAST get a minimum of guaranteed care. Because health and life are ethical rights no matter how much paper you have in your pockets. THAT'S what it's about.
Lanc Mac Wait? He is rich because people are buying his stuff? That's unheard of man. I am contacting NASA so they can seal this message and take it into space.
Lanc Mac We choose to cover everyones health care as it benefits everyone and our economies. Considering America is one of only a handful of countries with out some form of universal health care, your argument seems to fall kind of short. I'm not sure I agree with your statement about Bill Gates acting like GOD either, but that's a whole other argument :P
Bill Gates is an amazing and extremely smart man. Great, great work from both of you. Looking forward to TWO vlogbrothers videos on Tuesdays :) (Also, really liking the RUclips jacket, John.) DFTBA!!
Can we see your unedited footage of talking to Bill gates and all the Ethiopians? I'm really curious how their views on different topics are same or different from mine. On hankschannel maybe?
I don't think that it would be against the rules for him to put then up here. It would be educational so it could go longer than 4 minutes. I do agree I would love to see the full videos where every I could.
If anyone is wondering what the Poverty Trap is (like I was). The poverty trap is "any self-reinforcing system that causes poverty to persist". In this case, I think mr Gates is talking about the system where parents bear a lot of children. They do this to make sure those children can take care of them when they get old. However, this causes the population to grow, which causes there to be less capital/wealth per person.
Dear Mr.Green, I'm a huge fan! I love the books you've written! I was wondering if you could do a meet up October 16th-18th? A couple of friends and I would love to meet you! It's fine if you can't though. Anyways thank you for reading this. Love, Shai-Anne
I've read on Wikipedia that Ethiopia's government is a republic and a democracy, but to what extent is it corrupted and not looking out for the people's best interest? Do any Ethiopians or people who have been to Ethiopia have any experience in this?
A special bonus video in which John Green and Microsoft founder Bill Gates talk about how Ethiopia has reduced its infant mortality dramatically in the past twenty years.
Snakes!
first
QTHERESSERECTION Awesome name
This kind of thing makes me feel VERY grateful for what I have and makes me think about how I could help, even just by a little, decrees world suck. Thanks John!
I hope there are many more of these to come.
Keep up the good work:)
Bill Gates for third vlogbrother.
YASS
Dave Green is the third Vlogbrother.
Maybe he could be a vloguncle? He's 23 years older than John so it's completely possible. :D
cmeflywva that is very true. even though dave is just a creation from tumblr
I think you mean fourth VlogBrother
next time you see him ask if i can borrow £1 billion
in all seriousness great work for a great cause :)
Korsos bill is american. its just the man writing the comment is lol
£1 billion is $1.6 billion USD.
Even just a million would suffice.
Korsos lol.
I actually meant to reply to Jonathan. xD
This has been such a big year for you John, you'e accomplished amazing things and Nerdfighteria is proud of you :)
I wish there were more people in the world that dedicated even a fraction of their time or energy to bettering the world like Bill Gates does. He's truly one of the most incredible people on the planet.
You're in it, baby! Spread the word! The entire Nerdfighter community and all it's lovely tentacles are dedicated to decreasing world suck!
Did this age well?
I feel so special seeing this so early :D
My 18 year old cousin recently got back from Ethiopia volunteering in a hospital for three weeks. I'm so proud of him and of you for all the awareness you're spreading about Ethiopian healthcare. Much love from Montreal x
I think it's official: Bill Gates is a Nerdfighter.
Bill Gates was a Nerdfighter before there was a word for a Nerdfighter.
I totally teared up reading the part of the newsletter this week with the middle school kids. They sounded so happy to be themselves and I have so much respect for that. This is the smartest video I've ever watched in my entire life.
you have very low expectations in your life then
SkyClap *slow sky clap*
what
for me?
It's great that Bill Gates is on the vlogbrothers channel and all, but to call it the smartest video you've ever seen? That's a bit of an exageration, don't you think?
John, you should make a playlist for all of your Ethiopia videos. It will make it easier to share them all that way.
It's like watching father and son. I can't like this more than once, but I would if I could!
You know what Bill Gates? The design of Windows sucks, but you're an okay guy anyway, so I can deal with that.
you took the words right out of my mouth lol
Agreed. Not a fan of Windows, but he is a great guy!
He's no longer a part of windows. Hasn't been for a good while.
He no longer is CEO of Microsoft, and so has no say in it. The look of Windows 8 would be the realm of someone like a UI designer.
MultiInko you make me lol.
You are so awesome, using your "fame" to spread such positive messages to the world! love & bitterballen from the Netherlands
Oh my I am so glad this bonus video series is a thing. THANK YOU SO MUCH JOHN! I THINK THIS WHOLE VIDEO SERIES ABOUT ETHEOPIA IS VERY INTERESTING AND COOL AND LEARNING ABOUT IT IS EXCITING.
Bonus video, is it my birthday! I love these vids, so interesting, and inspirational.
What?! A third vlogbrothers video a week for a whole month?! You just made many nerdfighters very happy, John. DFTBA
So excited about this. I'm really glad you'll be showing us more videos like this one :)
John, I'm just curious: How do Ethiopians envision the future of their country? What kind of economy do they see themselves becoming?
***** Very cool name.
ssevf Fun Fact: people not living in a country are still capable of analyzing it.

Knowing the richest man in the world is a great guy makes me feel a bit happier about the people on the planet.
Yup. This. Seriously. This so much.

glad to see that someone uploades a serious video.
Thanks for making these bonus videos from your trip. Very illuminating.
Got to say I have so much respect for Bill Gates
same
How can one not like/respect him? He's just a grade A human beeing/role model
Me too! Gosh, I'm glad someone as knowledgeable as him has the monies.
***** I would spent it better, Velour Tracksuits, neon tattoos and 100% Cocaine. Maybe you're right.

A bonus video is always good
This is a well made video John!!!!!
I love bonus videos !
It made my day a lot better !
Good job John. You just put your influence to very good use. I commend you. Keep it up.

So interesting. Can't wait for more.

beautiful quality of video and topic
Just watched this 16 minutes after it came out. I just randomly checked vlogbrothers channel and this was here.

Hey there Catherine (I hope).
I know that this is an earlier video, and so I’m very late in commenting.
Rest assured, that this comment is not time-sensitive in any way, shape or form.... and my comment is thus/this -
Mr Gates has a very similar voice to John’s voice. It’s not the patterns that are similar, it’s something to do with the small inflections, the timbre..it’s very difficult to explain.
But here goes, here’s what happened. I was watching the video, John asked Bill a question and Bill began his reply. I got up to make my peppermint tea and I left my phone on the coffee table.
For a moment I was distracted by the task at hand and I thought that I would rewind the video to hear it again. I just wanted to share this with you.
Thanks for all that you do, and take care 🙂🐿

You guys should start a podcast :-)
Say, could you post more of your footage from Ethiopia, so we can try editing it for the Online Video Nerdfighter Workshop?
Amazing video!
Interesting! I didn't realize how vitally important health is to maintaining a country. I always knew it was a factor, but I didn't realize it was THE factor.
I have a feeling that John's next book is going to feature themes about poverty and Africa.
Bill Gates was fascinating, but all I couldn't stop watching John's bobble-head impersonation when Bill Gates was talking
OMG i didn't even notice it lol
Yay new video !!!!
You sir are a gentleman and and a scholar, and a something about wine.
The coolers for the vaccines are such a great advance in recent years. I can't wait for more research and development to be done on administering vaccines through a nano-patch, which does not require refrigeration.
The kid in blue around 1:48 who ran up and stuck his tongue out succeeded in distracting me.
Loved this video, and I can't wait for more of these uploads! Could you talk about net neutrality?
I'd love longer interviews. Since it's a bonus video I think you can get away with that it's longer than 4 minutes, and also because Bill Gates.
this is fantastic thank you
It's great to see how Bill Gates is really committed to giving intelligently. He's not just saying the words, he's actively trying to be the expert on these issues and how to solve them.
Yeeeiii Bonus!!
This video made me very happy and it also made me cry.
Very good video, thank you
Let me see if I got this right: We get double Vlogbrothers videos on Tuesdays? If so YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

So in conclusion universal health care is the best system.

Dear Mr.Green,
I'm a huge fan! I love the books you've written! I was wondering if you could do a meet up October 16th-18th? A couple of friends and I would love to meet you! It's fine if you can't though. Anyways thank you for reading this.
Love,
Shai-Anne
