@@mattevans923 Hellhammer was a better band and more influential on Black Metal than Mercyful fate. Simply put, Tom G. Warrior's work with both Celtic Frost and Hellhammer was phenomenal.
I agree, I think Venom may have come up with the name “Black Metal” but it really didn’t begin to the sound we know and love until Quorthon. His vocals took things to a completely different level, that raw screech he used, the high treble “thin” guitar sound and especially on the 1st album where you really hear the bass guitar playing the octave, it gives it such a heaviness and the raw mix of the production is perfect. I’d even go as far as saying while Quorthon created a true Black Metal sound, as he progressed into more complex song writing and left the Satanic themes to embrace his heritage, he’s equally responsible for Viking Metal. The sound changed, the lyrics changed but he never sounded less heavy or mainstream. Bathory imo is one of the most important Metal bands of all time. In their own right they’re as important as Black Sabbath, anything that came out of the Bay Area or Florida/Swedish OSDM. They put Scandinavian countries on the map and birthed a sound that would inspire generations with its unholy excellence!
No any doubts, BATHORY!!! True genius. Unique riffing. Something completely different than done before. Call from the grave was the best riff played here
I think the production on the early Bathory records really let the actual quality of those riffs down. Some of those riffs, as you say are pretty unique, as well as just downright fucking evil, even more so than a lot of Venom and Celtic Frost riffs, especially on The Return of Darkness & Evil and Under the Sign of the Black Mark, but a lot of the time you can barely even make out the guitars due to the fucking awful lo-fi mix. I totally get that the poorly produced style and aesthetic paved the way for black metal as we know it today, and I can still enjoy and appreciate those classic Bathory albums, they’re awesome regardless, but even so, it’s just a personal gripe of mine. Just wish sometimes those riffs were actually fucking audible.
