Viking House: Overnight Bushcraft Camp in the Viking Shelter

- Join us at the bushcraft viking camp for an overnight in the viking home we built using simple hand tools. We use bushcraft and primitive technology to get the fire going. Once the fire was burning in the viking longpit we cooked meat over the coals and enjoyed a night in the bushcraft shelter. The method of lighting the fire was the bow drill, the wood used was a hazel spindle on to a lime hearth board. We collected wild food from the forest to add to our viking feast. Important Bunker Update coming next! (Appropriate given the difficult times at the moment). This was an epic overnight, get your Viking Horn T-Shirts here: taofficial.com/collections/t-shirts/products/viking-horn-t-shirt
The reason the other wall has held up is the clay is under cover and your end wall is exposed to rainfall. Adobe structures have to be patched after springtime (rainy season) or bad storms.
Glad you got to spend the night and enjoy Dustins cooking! Also glad your helping Em with Evelyn.
Skal brothers. May i ask the ale you are drinking/feasting on.
Next you need to build a "smokehouse" for fish etc
Nicely build, Greetings from a Belgian bushcrafter
I can't believe it's already been a year since you built the Viking house
it's very nice
I've got bad news for you
You could always use live moss to plug the holes and gaps in the cedar bark and it will start growing over the bark over time and make it even more waterproof.
Too many gap's. Freezing 🥶
Just sitting and watching/listening to this in these times is comforting.
Government: You must self-quarantine yourself to protect against the corona illness.
Mike and Dustin: Hold our bow drill
I think you understand why we're all here.
Haha!
lol! heck when/if this all blows over there is likely to be a large increase in interest in the bushcraft/survival genre .the entire world will realize their little snacks at Costco can only sustain people for so long. had this been a true world calamity where even basic services are cut off . mercy
You mean, hold my mead.
Ces Ral Well said and I couldn’t agree more!
You always manage to entertain. Thanks.
Your feast made me hungry. So, I paused the video and went downstairs and made something to eat.
Halved some small white bread loaves and toasted them in the oven. Took out some collard greens, cauliflower, red onion and garlic and chopped it up and steamed them with black pepper, italian seasoning and powdered mustard. While my veggies were steaming I put some swiss and cheddar cheese on my toast. Cleaned up the kitchen and had my veggies and toast ready to finish watching the video. lol
Had some iced green tea and lime with it since it is 80F/26.7C here.
Great video again Mike and Dustin! Thank you! 👍😁
Dustin is the Bourdain of Bushcraft :-)
That hatchet is badass, but it needs a name. Skull Cleaver. Dragon Tooth. Norman. (Take your pick.)

ブッシュクラフトとDiyの良いトコどりの映像に魅了されます!
Nice, but the quiet episodes where you build things are much better than the drink and giggle episodes. Thanx. I am a fan and will keep watching.
I can still taste that garlic mayo!
I tried wild garlic in some dush about a year ago ... was amazed how much nicer it was than bulb garlic.
That’s an awesome bearded axe you have, can I get more info about where you bought it?
In one of your videos, Mike said you tan your own deer hides...
It would be way cool to be able to purchase some, due to I dont have any to tan, nor know how...😎
I am so impressed that it is still standing considering the storms we had had here, great work you guys.
Glad to see you guys are following the self isolate against covid19, can't get more isolated than in the woods away from civilisation 👌👍
The two of you are an excellent pair to watch. Your comradery is lovely, the skill of your builds and the yummyness of your foragings and outdoor cuisine. Such an awesome combo!
1 yr wow, I can't believe it's been a year. Cracks not withstanding, the Viking house is looking good.
Brilliant. I watched a vid from America, building a log cabin from scratch. They used birch bark to roof their cabin. But they peeled their bark 6 months before they needed it and pressed it flat with weights.
Mike your videography is some of the best on RUclips. And Dustin’s skills are amazing!
Awesome meal!!
Vikings Forever 👊🏻
Who makes the axe? Several people asked already. Its beautiful.
The way to make a good shingled roof with cedar bark (though thin cedar shingles would be best) is to layer them so that at each point there are around three layers of bark on the roof. This will keep gaps from forming and let you cover the knot holes in one layer with the solid bark in the next. Starting at the edge of the roof, naturally, to allow the rain to slick off.
I was guessing they could add more layers to it. Makes sense to start that way from the beginning so you can overlap them in. I suppose everything works better if you plan for it from the beginning haha.
Thank you both for your time and sharing. ;
The lamb-copter is worth a Nobel Prize in Bushcraft!
I remember watching you guys building this Viking Camp like if it was yesterday, and enjoying every part of the build. I can't believe it's been one year already and it's still up and strong. You guys did a great job, like you always do in all your builds. Thank you so much for all the great videos that you be giving us, they are knowledgeable and very enjoyable to watch. Sending lots of love from Springfield, Massachusetts.
Congratulations with your family and with this video lots of fun lots of food and good friends cheers mate
2022 update! hahaha I've just finished this series and it was AMAZING! I've learned a lot with u, guys. Thank u, keep doin what ya doin!
Sve Vasi filmovi su bas dobri !
What you guys could do to mitigate the bark shrinkage could be to take what you learned from the Viking Turf house and just lay a layer of turf overtop of the bark as an extra layer of protection.
Taking the lessons you've learned from your other structures to revisit your previous work and improve it could make for a cool series eventually.
I just hope the Celtic Roundhouse has a cool firepit like the one in Viking house, that has to be my favorite part of this build.
Such a great job! With more bark, it’d be more able to shed rain. Then could load up the roof with mosses & coax a living roof to grow up over it...which helps shed water & insulate.
The lamb-copter was a genius hack!
you guys eat better in the woods than most do at home. Awesome!
you guys always make me hungry Cooking on an open fire sure makes food taste GREAT Top Video Thanks
Just wait until you can start teaching your daughter about this stuff!
It would be a chore, but I bet you could "moss-plug" that bark roof. Depending on moss availability of course. Watching the condensed full build video of y'all building viking house is what hooked me on your channel.
Can't wait for the round house!
Nice to see both of you enjoying an night in your build amid all the craziness in the world. Great video
You guys should do an overnight in this house during winter/snow. See if it holds up ok.
The food looks awesome . Great video thankyou 💚
Watching you from quarantine, Mike and Dustin. You always cheer me up. Keep it up, guys.
Hi Mike
Over 1 Mill Subs. Really, did you expect that ?
Isn't that amazing. Both yourself and Graeme have the best channels on the subjects without a doubt. I hope you are all well.
Love ya,
Steve in Fife.
Thanks Mike.
Steve in Fife x
Congratulations Mike Dustin a whole year and it still looks beautiful awesome boy I like watching Dustin cook it always looks delicious I can almost smell it sitting in my living room
Great fire pit there.
ta fishing & ta outdoors that's my Friday night sorted thanks guys
I live in Colorado. It's interesting that people in the UK and America all cleared out exactly the same items from the grocery stores: TP, soap, flour, eggs... But we still have tons of fresh produce and a reasonable amount of meat.
So nice to see you and Dustin back at the Viking House. I wonder if you could moss those splits in the bark roof. Another epic video and nice to see something fun in these times. ❤
I can't wait to sit down and watch this. I love your videos. I just uploaded one of me snowshoeing in the bush solo for an Overnighter in the Canadian backcountry.
That axe you use for splitting wood is beautiful! Bearded Axes like that are so awesome, and they are wonderful to work with, as you noted when splitting those logs.
Before you mentioned it I was noticing how great the hatchet was. Very sharp.
What a nice dog :) Wonderful video. Thank you. Stay safe and healthy.
The bromance is back! Love it :) sincronised biting made my day
This is a perfect time to have a house like this in the middle of the woods
Simply the Best at what you two do!! Although the bark did shrink up a bit, it is still a Work of Art! Just shows how fast a year flies by! Great stuff!!
Happy times and good food for the 1 year celebration
That is what this channel is all about
Glad to see you two enjoying the fruits of your efforts.
CHEERS 🍻!
YESSSS! another Viking House video! Btw, that intro was excellent... who am I kidding? All of your intros are excellent! Awesome job bro! 👍👍
Miss you brothers building and playing together
Missed that , thanks Mike ! Keep safe you and your family during this pandemic
Super le reportage, j'aime l'explication de la construction de la cabane avec son revêtement en écorce de bois!!!
good to see you back ♥️
it is great to feast with friends in such a place, soon we will be feasting in our shelter! Greetings!
Sounds great!
the wild garlic you are picking is called wild leeks or ramps here in PA in the USA. We pick the whole plant and eat the bottoms as well. goes great with ham and in the spring there are many benefit dinners of ham and leeks.
One of my 3 favorite bushcraft channels. Outstanding, gentlemen. My wife even watches with me 😄
Bring along a little shovel and REPLANT. Make those wild patches more numerous and closer to camp. Bring your fire ashes out and sprinkle over areas to sow in some nutrients. Dig a shallow trench, fill with storm blown debris, and burn it. Feed your food forest! :)
I would suggest you use the bark as sort of shingles, but only fasten one side of it and leave it hanging down overlapping each other. that would keep it much more loose so it can shrink a bit without it splitting a lot due to being pinned with those nails, thats what makes it rip it apart since they dont have any give.
Recommendation: On doing the bow drill method of fire starting you should have your bearing block arm straight and put your upper body weight onto the bearing block. This will cause less effort and reduced calorie loss during this process.
Jealous! -20 c here today! Love that double-fire pit! You guys rock. Stay safe. 😉💜🇨🇦
Love seeing the two of you team up to enjoy the outdoors and put your builds to good use. Keep up the good work.
You can easily fix (well not easy but simple), the roof, just add another layer of bark going vertical and make sure to overlap everywhere. I would recommend using smaller pieces and starting from the bottom and tying the top of the new shingle to the existing shingles. Do this in horizontal rows, overlap the next layer so it covers the top part of the bottom shingle making sure it covers the lashing of the bottom shingle. You can also add bark to the sides to cover up the holes not that it's needed considering the front is wide open and the fact you have an indoor fire pit. Maybe try something similar to how tepees make smoke flow up and out by creating a heat vortex by having cold air come in through the bottom pushing the hot air up and out. Not sure how you might do this, possibly by adding more vents at the bottom of the fire pit or maybe closing up the front and sides of the structure and opening up the bottom of the structures first few inches. Just a thought
Hello from across the pond in Connecticut New England hey. Always enjoy you guys sharing your videos ya know.
I love camping, the outdoors and bushcraft and you guys are great hey. Thank you! .....Wally.
Love that Hatchet!
Impresivan video !
Was waiting for another feast cooked up by Dustin. Love that I watched the original build of the Viking House and the "Lambcopter." Congrats on one year anniversary. Can't wait to hear what the new projects are about.
Amazing to believe it’s been a year since i watched the lambcopter episode. Onward!
Hello, an alternative to the bran or clay mixture is moss to close the gaps. What was more likely at the time around 900 AD. So try using moss to seal the wall with the window and roof.
So jealous watching this. Looks absolutely awesome dude 👍
dude, that's not a hatchet, that's a hand ax. and it's a beaut! it's also hard to believe I watched the vids of you guys building this a year ago. man time flies. chive on! :-)
I know it's a lot of work, but you could try adding another layer of Cedar bark to the Viking house to patch the holes.
A lot of work but the perfect solution to the problem. Excellent idea !!!
I am sitting here in my new hoody "TA OUTDOORS LIFE IS GOOD IN THE WOODS" I love this series and all the other series. Keep having fun outdoors Mike. :)
Hope you’re still having fun, and enjoying family, and the adventure of home ownership! Take care, and be well, from the Allegheny National Forest in Northwest Pennsylvania.
Awesome vid, I always like to see you guys cooking outdoors, not the normal as we do it here in the states, hotdogs and marshmallows lol. Stay safe over there!
Recommendation II: Pick your grass on the way into the area and put it in your pants pocket. Your body heat and the moving around from the pocket dynamics will dry it out quickly.
So Glad so see you both 👍👍💪💪🙏
Sorry to have missed you and Dustin as was down in the woods on Saturday harvesting wild garlic. Been alot of felling there thats for sure! Cheers Vee
These cookouts are the best though. Being a chef and seeing you get to do rustic cooking is just nice. Keep at it guys
the shell as a palm guard is genius
it is a great idea but i wouldnt say genius its in about every survival book ive read
Looks good Mike, it’s taken those storms amazingly
Omg omg yesss please absaluty love it been learning a lot thank you...future plans yesss....
Loved watching the Viking house been built, great to see you back out there. Hope to see more off these types vids. ♥👍
Now would be a good time to buy some fruit and nut trees, buy some berry bushes, and heirloom herbs. Plant your own distributed plots. :) Plant those chestnuts and oaks to feed the wild life too!
Rather enjoyed that!! Thanks lads!! 👍👍👍
I love these episodes, so relaxing.
Well, Mike, it’s far to grand a structure to let it go without a proper roof. It would be a shame not to use it. You achieved the “Viking” concept, now fix her and enjoy her! We’ll enjoy the videos! Thanks
Outstanding WOW congratulations!!
Can I book this as my Corona resort?! :D
my first thought as well.
idiot? yes.
Man, I want that small hatchet!!!
Great idea on using that shell for a pivot point. I like that hatchet! That thing looks sweet. Your meal looked so delicious. I could taste it from over here lol. 👍😉😁🐔🐓
Good one guys...looked like you had a blast..well done
This channel always makes me hungry... So much for the diet!
In North America, there's something that looks like those "chives," but it's wild onion and has actual small onions in the ground. They have to be crushed like garlic to get the shell off, but they're very tasty.
You must smell so smoky by the time you leave! Can you imagine how the Vikings reaked with smoke, pelts and B.O.! As soon as I watched I made marinated chicken, vegtables and a baked potato!
Might smell better than all that horrid perfume people wear.
Just wanted to say you have a great channel, and watching has made me into a much more proficient fire starter/builder. Thank you, and keep up the good work.
