Viking House: Overnight Bushcraft Camp in the Viking Shelter

- Join us at the bushcraft viking camp for an overnight in the viking home we built using simple hand tools. We use bushcraft and primitive technology to get the fire going. Once the fire was burning in the viking longpit we cooked meat over the coals and enjoyed a night in the bushcraft shelter. The method of lighting the fire was the bow drill, the wood used was a hazel spindle on to a lime hearth board. We collected wild food from the forest to add to our viking feast. The reason the other wall has held up is the clay is under cover and your end wall is exposed to rainfall. Adobe structures have to be patched after springtime (rainy season) or bad storms.

You could always use live moss to plug the holes and gaps in the cedar bark and it will start growing over the bark over time and make it even more waterproof.

lol! heck when/if this all blows over there is likely to be a large increase in interest in the bushcraft/survival genre .the entire world will realize their little snacks at Costco can only sustain people for so long. had this been a true world calamity where even basic services are cut off . mercy

Your feast made me hungry. So, I paused the video and went downstairs and made something to eat.
Halved some small white bread loaves and toasted them in the oven. Took out some collard greens, cauliflower, red onion and garlic and chopped it up and steamed them with black pepper, italian seasoning and powdered mustard. While my veggies were steaming I put some swiss and cheddar cheese on my toast. Cleaned up the kitchen and had my veggies and toast ready to finish watching the video. lol
Had some iced green tea and lime with it since it is 80F/26.7C here.

Brilliant. I watched a vid from America, building a log cabin from scratch. They used birch bark to roof their cabin. But they peeled their bark 6 months before they needed it and pressed it flat with weights.

Who makes the axe? Several people asked already. Its beautiful.
The way to make a good shingled roof with cedar bark (though thin cedar shingles would be best) is to layer them so that at each point there are around three layers of bark on the roof. This will keep gaps from forming and let you cover the knot holes in one layer with the solid bark in the next. Starting at the edge of the roof, naturally, to allow the rain to slick off.
I was guessing they could add more layers to it. Makes sense to start that way from the beginning so you can overlap them in. I suppose everything works better if you plan for it from the beginning haha.

What you guys could do to mitigate the bark shrinkage could be to take what you learned from the Viking Turf house and just lay a layer of turf overtop of the bark as an extra layer of protection.
Taking the lessons you've learned from your other structures to revisit your previous work and improve it could make for a cool series eventually.
I just hope the Celtic Roundhouse has a cool firepit like the one in Viking house, that has to be my favorite part of this build.
Such a great job! With more bark, it’d be more able to shed rain. Then could load up the roof with mosses & coax a living roof to grow up over it...which helps shed water & insulate.

I live in Colorado. It's interesting that people in the UK and America all cleared out exactly the same items from the grocery stores: TP, soap, flour, eggs... But we still have tons of fresh produce and a reasonable amount of meat.
So nice to see you and Dustin back at the Viking House. I wonder if you could moss those splits in the bark roof. Another epic video and nice to see something fun in these times. ❤

That axe you use for splitting wood is beautiful! Bearded Axes like that are so awesome, and they are wonderful to work with, as you noted when splitting those logs.

the wild garlic you are picking is called wild leeks or ramps here in PA in the USA. We pick the whole plant and eat the bottoms as well. goes great with ham and in the spring there are many benefit dinners of ham and leeks.
One of my 3 favorite bushcraft channels. Outstanding, gentlemen. My wife even watches with me 😄
Bring along a little shovel and REPLANT. Make those wild patches more numerous and closer to camp. Bring your fire ashes out and sprinkle over areas to sow in some nutrients. Dig a shallow trench, fill with storm blown debris, and burn it. Feed your food forest! :)
I would suggest you use the bark as sort of shingles, but only fasten one side of it and leave it hanging down overlapping each other. that would keep it much more loose so it can shrink a bit without it splitting a lot due to being pinned with those nails, thats what makes it rip it apart since they dont have any give.
Recommendation: On doing the bow drill method of fire starting you should have your bearing block arm straight and put your upper body weight onto the bearing block. This will cause less effort and reduced calorie loss during this process.

Love seeing the two of you team up to enjoy the outdoors and put your builds to good use. Keep up the good work.
You can easily fix (well not easy but simple), the roof, just add another layer of bark going vertical and make sure to overlap everywhere. I would recommend using smaller pieces and starting from the bottom and tying the top of the new shingle to the existing shingles. Do this in horizontal rows, overlap the next layer so it covers the top part of the bottom shingle making sure it covers the lashing of the bottom shingle. You can also add bark to the sides to cover up the holes not that it's needed considering the front is wide open and the fact you have an indoor fire pit. Maybe try something similar to how tepees make smoke flow up and out by creating a heat vortex by having cold air come in through the bottom pushing the hot air up and out. Not sure how you might do this, possibly by adding more vents at the bottom of the fire pit or maybe closing up the front and sides of the structure and opening up the bottom of the structures first few inches. Just a thought

Hello, an alternative to the bran or clay mixture is moss to close the gaps. What was more likely at the time around 900 AD. So try using moss to seal the wall with the window and roof.

I know it's a lot of work, but you could try adding another layer of Cedar bark to the Viking house to patch the holes.

Recommendation II: Pick your grass on the way into the area and put it in your pants pocket. Your body heat and the moving around from the pocket dynamics will dry it out quickly.

In North America, there's something that looks like those "chives," but it's wild onion and has actual small onions in the ground. They have to be crushed like garlic to get the shell off, but they're very tasty.
You must smell so smoky by the time you leave! Can you imagine how the Vikings reaked with smoke, pelts and B.O.! As soon as I watched I made marinated chicken, vegtables and a baked potato!
Might smell better than all that horrid perfume people wear.
