    I think the key is to turn off / sleep all electronic devices because they are easy distractions. I also quite like a rule that Andy Miller, of the fantastic reading podcast Backlisted, applied which is that consistency is what matters. He set himself a 50 page/day target on any book he was reading and, as he says if you can read 50 pages a day eventually you'll get through any book and 50 pages was a realistic amount. You could set a different number depending on reading speed but the key was consistency. Sometimes on Booktube, you get the impression that it is the number of books you read that is the important thing as opposed to the joy you get from the reading.

    • @jaigurudeva00m
      @jaigurudeva00m 3 года назад

      When I started to read I did 50 page per day but I was constantly worrying about how many pages i've read so far and sometimes I read faster to get throught the 50 pages. Maybe was begginer mistake but now I read 1 hour aprox (+ or - depends on the mood) and I focus on digering the words

    • @Lokster71
      @Lokster71 3 года назад +1

      @@jaigurudeva00m I don't think the number of pages matters. I think it is the consistency. I'm a fast reader but different books take different speeds to read. I finished 'In Search of Lost Time' by Proust last month. It took me two and a half years. But I chipped away at it over time. After that, I feel I can read anything!

    I started doing this, i have a book i read at night i sometimes put a 30 min timer so i dont get distracted but other times i just read a couple of pages and thats it. The goal is to read everyday it doesnt matter how much. I usually pick a book that is either long, with slow pace or really hard to read that helps me proces the book spend time with it or not get frustated with it. Right now is lord of the rings and god it does fit in those categories hahaha
    I most of the times i have another book i read during the day that is easier or faster pace.

    I usually wake up one hour before I HAVE to wake up (and I usually curse myself at first, but I always know that it's gonna make me feel great later) to get a breakfast ready and just read as focused as I can in the first moment of the day. Sometimes I can really read some good amount after lunch, but I always fall asleep and take a nap before having to go on my second round of study lol. I also like to read before bed to relax and finish my day with a good feeling, but it's not as productive as in the morning since I also end up sleeping... but still, they are my favorite moments of the day.

    I found a way to gamify my experience with reading, ie I use the Focus To-Do app, create a Books project, then add the book I'm currently reading as a task. Then I would start the timer to read and it helps to encourage me while earning points to grow a plant/tree in this case. Each week, it also shows the hours I spent on each project/Books. Because I like to play mobile games, I find this encourages me. Also, I start with a short 15-min interval; this helps me to read without "wanting" to check the clock. Hopefully one day, I will increase the timer interval to 30 min, 45min, etc. Good luck. I understand your "pain".

    I started reading 50 pages a day from January. And since I am someone who does not like routines, I struggled with this challenge for the first 2 weeks. But after that I was really into it. I usually listen to an audiobook in the mornings and read in the evenings and before going to bed. I am now at a point that I have to actually try and stop myself from reading to go and watch my shows.
    Like you, I did discover reading before bed after I challenged myself. It works wonders for insomnia.

    When I decided to get back to reading for fun after I finished my master's a few years back, what helped me most was making reading a part of my routine just like you said. For me it was 1~2 hours in the morning because my brain is much more receptive first thing in the morning compared to evening, and also because it's guaranteed that I won't be disturbed early in the day as long as I put the forest app on my phone. (My bf always wakes up 1~2 hours later than me so that also works lol) Since I'm living with a partner, it helped me to first set a routine of reading in the morning and then tell & show my bf that, so that he knew to respect my boundary when he saw me reading.

    My rule in general is to read for at least 15 minutes a day. Often that gets me in the mood to read and I read some more, but the hardest part is definitely picking up the book! 15 mins is not too daunting for me personally. Ofcourse there are some days I don't even do those 15 mins but those are rare. 😄 I started using audiobooks a couple of months ago and that has also helped me reading more because I always listen from and to work which is at least 2 hours every day.

I felt really bad and was pressured to finish them and felt like I was in a "reading slump". But really I just stressed myself out and made it feel like reading is something I HAD to do instead of something I WANT to do. I really did not have a reading slump, I realised later on, I was just really busy with other things and other hobbies. When I stopped pressuring myself to read I found that I was more at peace with myself and actually started reading for fun again hahaha.

    I found myself too that the "i have to start reading" was true (for me)
    After I start, i can't finish lmao
    But there are times that I HAVE to start.

    Going to bed late... I do exactly the same as you :D I did read a few weeks before bedtime, but not anymore. I should do that again, because this is the only time at day when it's quite enough for reading (bc anoying people) and no one whats anything from me.

    Ok, this'll sound pretty weird but don't brush your teeth immediately after drinking tea, wait for about half an hour before you do. That's because the pH in your mouth will drop after eating or drinking something like juice, tea or coffee which makes your teeth sensitive and more likely for the enamel to get damaged while brushing.

    Even when I’m in a reading slump and I try to get myself into reading, reading for 1 hour is just not enough for me like I need atleast 3 hours. I’m not a slow reader I just hungrily devour the book 😅

    When the pandemic started last year there was plenty of time to read and do jigsaw puzzles. With things returning to somewhat normal it has been hard to find the time to do these two hobbies anymore. After watching your video something just clicked.

    I like to read before bed but for me it's important to pick a book that won't wind me up, so to speak. Like, I don't like to read romance or intense, heavy books before bed b/c I get all tense, upset or excited and then I can't sleep xD

  • @rss19909

    Every day I read an hour a day. It’s mostly at night when I settle down before bed. If it’s not an hour it’s one to three chapters depending on how long the chapters are.

    I think reading 30 mins a day is a very doable amount of time to fit into a busy schedule for people who would like to read more (:
    I was so excited to see you uploaded! Needed something to watch whilst I have my lunch x
    I hated The Night Circus so much though 😂

    i usually listen to audiobooks in bed because i share the room with my sister, and she goes to bed earlier cause she has to get up for school much earlier than i have to be up for uni, so i cant always have the lights on and i dont want to ruin my streak (im trying to read every single day this year).
    my streaks going really well so far ive already read 38% as much as last year so, its working. and 75% of what ive read this year has been audiobook lol.
