People say that Anxiety is a track that sounds just like an anxiety attack. But, to me, this one is the one that really sounds like anxiety. The beginning with the almost discordant synths and the erratic and booming drums that come together into a cacophany of threads that make it hard to follow, looping over and over, while the synth gets just higher, and higher, and higher. the way I understood it was that it was her voice, or at least, her emotions and fear. if you listen to this track reversed, the otherwise unintelligible whispering can be understood. it’s pretty rough.
Anxiety and this were also my top 2 for eerie or discomforting tracks in the game. Anxiety does its job of feeling very panicked and scared.. This.. just feels awful, but in the best way possible. It feels gross, claustrophobic, scary, etc.. And that's what it's meant to do, and.. that's probably part of what makes it so satisfying.
Nathan Carver Yeah those are some good adjectives. I also really like describing songs with verbs; this one to me seems kind of like running away from yourself which you can’t do. Also, imo, this is the best song in the soundtrack because of how strong it is in its emotion.
Simonsaysgaming the panic attack scene is my favorite, just the sudden darkness and intense atmosphere was jawdropping. This has to be my favorite though, the whole thing feels like it’s leading to a sort of upbeat track but it just... doesn’t. It feels hollow and hopeless, which is exactly what it’s meant to make you feel. Anxiety is a more panicked and intense track, it’s meant to take you by surprise, but in that scene you aren’t alone like the beginning of this track, so it seems to have a bit less of a hopeless tone (or it at least drops off in Anxiety before the end)
This song really makes me feel uncomfortable. It's like the walls are closing in on me, but I have to keep running because someone needs me. When the music goes quiet, it's like everything freezes and I get chills. It feels so alien...
Yes this is a masterpiece from the artist, really makes you feel uncomfortable, I forgot which scene this is from but isn't it from the panic attacks on the gondola? Or the mirror temple. Either way, this soundtrack really makes me feel for the characters
From what I understand, this is what the music and the level is suppose to make you feel. So yea, it achieved its goals. I was super uncomfortable with the Mirror Temple too I tell you. Haven’t gone back to it even now
I swear, when you had to control one of the monsters and bring it to Madeline, that's the only time I can ever remember being genuinely creeped out and unnerved by any game I've played, excluding horror games of course. The entire temple was one big nightmare, what with the difficulty, music that oozes of negative thoughts and emotions, as well as the way that poor Madeline felt throughout the chapter, as well as the whole game up to that point, this level, while not as frustrating as say the wind in chapter 4, is definitely the chapter I least want to go back to, in a good way though. It's not intended to be a good place, the temple achieves its goal perfectly.
The music for this level, as well.. As I mentioned in another thread, it's gross, claustrophobic, eerie, disgusting, etc.. It makes you feel uneasy, and like *you shouldn't be here,* but it was *intended* to do that. Despite being my least favourite to play through, from a gameplay perspective, this level is one of my favourite for concept and.. I guess how it relates. I genuinely wish I could put better into words how this track and level is perfect, but.. I can't. It's just so.. *right*.
Making you control the monster, letting it overcome all the obstarcles to get to Madeline and attack her was one of the most genial elements in the game. They further displayed Madeline's anxiety, presenting a breaking point, some sort of climax of the built-up tension. (Theo lost, temple growing darker, moster statues... i immedeately suspected they will mean trouble.) It also enhanced the player's anxiety, by forcing you to do something highly uncomfortable - you're supposed to attack the heroine you've learned to love, bring her deepest fears to her and [kill] her. Did you notice the poor girl tries to run when you're closing in? And while all of this you learned how these monsters work. They explained gameplay element to you the most disturbing way possible. After finishing this level, i couldn't sleep for like 2 nights.
Do you record with live instruments or are they synthetic? Just curious. Either way the effect of you create organic and machine sounds, in the way that you do, is so affecting. So cool. Thank you.
'I'm at the bottom of the ocean, I can't see anything in any direction. It's claustrophobic, yet I feel exposed. I remember feeling normal, but now it just feels out of reach, no matter what I try.' When I first played Celeste, I couldn't really relate to Madeline at all. But now, I understand this quote on a spiritual level lmao.
Want to know backwards whispering, here ya go; "Sometimes, I... don't really know... what's going on anymore. I... I don't... know who I am. I just... look in the mirror, and... don't know who I'm looking at. Or... who's looking at me. I... think a lot... about... where... my train of thought is going... and it's not always a good place. And that scares me. I don't... like... scaring myself. I don't..." -Madeline, Celeste
Through the mirror temple, the whole place is pinned on using a person’s anxiety to test their strength to advance to the summit. It’s obvious that madaline’s anxiety is about herself. Even before she reached the temple, she was being pitted against herself. Against a version of herself that she hates. And because she hates herself, the temple acts to hurt her, not because it’s doing so of it’s own intention, but because that’s what madaline is trying to do, she’s trying to fight herself. And it becomes clear that the temple is not just centering around her the whole time once she gets to theo. The temple is also using his anxiety against him as well, with eyes constantly staring at him and being trapped inside a crystal barrier. Theo’s anxiety is a social anxiety, he is uncomfortable being watched and feels trapped when being surrounded by strangers. It’s also why he takes photos for his social media account. He still wants attention, but is unable to be in public to do it. It’s... something i understand all too well.
And this is where the Beholders come in. They are (probably) Theo's anxiety. Not only due to the eye thing, but also because of the fact that they dash with a green afterimage, and Theo uses green.
Sometimes, I... don't really know... what's going on anymore. I... I don't... know who I am. I just... look in the mirror, and... don't know who I'm looking at. Or... who's looking at me. I... think a lot... about... where... my train of thought is going... and it's not always a good place. And that scares me. I don't... like... scaring myself. I don't...
@@fyrefox45 Listen at 7:24 with headphones on. There are some very quiet sounds that don't match with the soundtrack. That's Madeline speaking backwards
I think the most compelling thing about the theme of depression in this theme is not just the reversed Mirror temple theme in 4:46, but when it gradually transitions to the piano actually playing the new backwards melody in 6:34. It's not an exact reiteration of the reversed melody, but you can feel the beautiful yet anguished melody trying to push through the blaring synths and violent drums. Almost like how people with depression sometimes feel like they have to push through a new normal that has been forged (or in this case, reversed) for them. Nothing is the same as it was before, like how the new melody is not the same as the old reversed melody. It's...hauntingly beautiful.
Your right! It’s really interesting; like at first with the reversed song your confused, then with the version afterwards like you need to get to the end at any cost. It’s amazing!
It reminds me of... something. I cant put my finger on it, and it feels completely abstract when I focus on it. It's some distant memory, maybe a dream I had.
Damn, when I first heard this song, I didn't think anything of it because of how unpleasent the start sounds, and I thought "oh, this is just supposed to be disturbing, alrighty". Now, I appreciate how masterful this song is, how it begins with hopelessness and unraveling to the hopeful tone it sets at the end, using every sound and instrument used to make it sound unnerving minutes before. A piece of art
I Never noticed the whispering until at around 3:30 before i watched the backwards vid, but now it seems so obvious. This was so touching when i just now saw it i am somewhat shaken... Such a brilliant game !!!
When the drums kick in at 7:07 i get major chills Also i love the atmosphere this song creates, it's so creepy and lonely and sounds full of isolation, and then the ending just kicks into gear and it flips the track into an epic ending, love it! Yet another amazing track from the best game OST ever!
I listen to and enjoy a lot of music people might call "oppressive". This is the only music I've that genuinely seems to deserve that moniker. It's good, but... painful. It feels heavy with guilt for sins long ago.
Quiet and Falling gives you a feeling like you've lost all hope and you sink deeper into the darkness and sorrow, with no way out, with no one to help you. Into the mirror's gives you a feeling of threat and danger, but slowly gived you a feeling that there is still hope, and that someone helps you get out of that sorrow and darkness that you initially sunk into. Honestly, both these two songs represent a mirror not only because one is the reversed version of the other, but also because both have opposite feelings that are present in one character: one feeling of being dragged down, and another one of being pulled up.
This will forever be the theme to ease my panic attacks. This song is just the musical manifestation of the saying that you're not alone in what you feel. If I was then this song wouldn't describe my personal panic so well lol
i had been kicked out of a CS:GO comp match. i was feeling pretty hurt, and really down, so i booted up sai, pulled up my youtube playlist, shuffled, and began to draw. the thing is, i had forgotten i added this track. i was already feeling pretty negative, and when this came on, it amplified those emotions. i literally began to cry, and breathing got harder. awesome job, 10/10 would break down again
@@via_embre i really wanna say something inspiring, and i thought of something kind of cool: "try to be cool about it, a random man cannot comprehend you as much as you can yourself and to call somebody bad is to call yourself bad since you are spreading negativity" but then my mind was like "it's a lot better to say git gud since now you are not spreading negativity yet still can hurt somebody" and i dont know what to say so i want to ask hopefully something simple How was your day? Do you want some pancakes?
I've listened to a lot "dark" stuff. Black metal, depressive black metal, dissonant and chaotic pieces from mathcore, rock songs with lyrics way more gloomy than what I've heard in black metal, I went through a lot of musical experiences, from horror videos games mostly, earthbound also played a major role in my exploration of that kind of music (the Giygas, now I don't feel safe anywhere) and I gotta say, this OST is so rich and colourful during a long part of this game and there's this thick track that comes after going through the regular temple sticking to your clothes and your limbs and weighing down on you... I was honestly oppressed by the ambiance and the music... It did made my progression in this part really tough but I never "rage quitted" and kept on fighting my way through lovecraftian horrors, I just wanted to escape this place at all costs, you could say I was scared lol but woah.. I can't seem to have enough of it, thank you Lena Raine and thank you too to the whole team for making such a well executed game!
This area was just... *shivers It’s like the True Lab in Undertale. Cool, but unexpected and scary as hell. Suddenly there’s enemies, eerie music, tentacles all over the place. You’re literally living your worst nightmares. But the creepiest part is the backwards talking, and the message it’s sending. The mountain/mirror is taking what Madeline hates most and is using them against her, but the scariest things to her aren’t the stuff that’s being used against her. The scariest thing is that fact that it came from Madeline. She’s literally scaring herself. That’s what anxiety is, and it’s been given a form. The mountain/mirror knows that. I’m just glad Theo’s here to keep us company.
Peref L. I thinks it’s more of like it represents her own anxiety attacking her, like I said in the comment. Madeline doesn’t hate herself, she just doesn’t like that her own body actively works to scare her. The enemies are so hostile because they are her own anxieties.
Peref L. Oh I know this is speculation, I was just curious. I agree with you on most parts, but the thing is I feel as if almost Madeline doesn’t think Badeline is the same as her at first. This is supported by the Badeline interaction right before she drags you to the bottom of the mountain. Madeline views Badeline and her anxiety as this horrid part of her that’s always trying to drag her down. She’s doesn’t realize it’s an important part of her, and is always trying to push that part away, to fun from it. Madeline’s biggest fear is when it fully catches up, when this “creature” starts scaring her. She doesn’t realize she’s scaring herself.
I don't think the Temple would have had such a terrifying effect on me if it wasn't for this amazing soundtrack. It really makes you feel claustrophobic, anxious, and all you want to do is get out. Partnered with the freakish monsters that chase you around and the visual distortion, the Temple genuinely made me feel a little bit sick tbh and I was always on edge especially towards the end.
This theme. This GODDAMN ANAZING theme. *I swear to god when I hear this I physically get colder* *HOW?* The ONLY track that gets more of a reaction out of me is Starjump. *And we ALL know how well that panned out*
The way the sound swirls around your head head in the beginning makes it truly feel like you're in some kind of inescapable, well, mirror world made of your worst fears. The whispering gets to me too. I can hear it over any noise in the room no matter what. its amazingly done.
this was my favourite level. when i kept dying on other levels, i'd have to take a break to calm down (by petting a cat) but i never got frustrated dying in this level. love the atmosphere.
With RUclips and the internet in general being such a big thing, getting games spoiled for me is a common occurrence. A lot of the times, I buy a game after seeing footage of something really epic that happens at some point in the game (Epic moment, final boss fight, an amazing song, you get the idea). Going into games blind is something I haven’t gotten to truly experience since I was a little kid, playing Paper Mario on his GameCube. Recently, I’ve been picking up new game series on a whim and giving them a whirl, trying to expand my horizons. I picked up Baldur’s Gate (friggin’ AMAZING), and when that was all said and done, Celeste. Hit diggity DAFFODILS was this game a whirl. It’s been a long time since a game actually unnerved me (too proud to say scared). Everything about this area just felt... wrong. The warped music, the reversed lyrics, and the daMN BODY HORROR MONSTERS AAAAUUUGH!! Never have I felt so relieved to finish... no... escape a level. Pat yourself on the back, Lena Raine. You got me good!
God this song really sold the Terrifying Hellscape of the temple in Madeline's head. Not to mention the VHS effects and the weird squid creatures. This game managed to encapsulate horror better than most movies nowadays can
This chapter scared the hell out of me on my first playthrough. The music made it more horrifying which is great for level design but not when your trying to sleep.
This song is both beautiful and haunting at the same time. I feel like (in my opinion) it is not necessarily the creepiest but the scariest song ever made based purely on the fact that it is a bunch of disorienting synth sounds with strange whispering in the middle and haunting piano keys at the end that reverses Quiet and Falling. This song is truly a masterpiece; a work of art! Celeste has one of the best soundtracks ever made!
Those synths are just so good, it doesn't just feel like something is behind you, it feels like there is danger in every direction and you are just petrified in place. There is seemingly no way out. You don't know what's happening. You may be trapped here forever with your personified thoughts.
Is it just me or is the high pitch tone that holds through much of this piece 7:10 the same sound and frequency as Madeline's dialogue box jabber makes when she's having a meltdown?
Now that you point it out... It is incredibly similar. That's probably intentional, given what the hidden message (Backwards speech - there's a few videos floating around RUclips) is.
i thought i was the only one that noticed that !!!! i heard that when i played the game for the first time and thought i was goin nuts, i thought madeline was crying and that my ears were tricking me.
I liked that little detail, when Theo talk about the virtues of Maddie, the level gets slightly brighter, like implicitly telling you, your mind is your biggest obstacle, sort of
That's a powerful image, and also sounds like an out-of-body experience waiting to happen, especially with mid-night drowsiness and disorientation. Can't wait to try it out if I have the chance.
I gotta say man, when I played the game and listened to the "voices" I got really scared, it was pretty disturbing. When I listened the track in reverse, I thought "this is the best and saddest easter egg in gaming history". I love how it adds so much to the game and thr story
“That chapter was quite fun, I wonder what the next one will be-“ *Chapter 5 Mirror Temple* “OH NO!” I was scared by the name because I remembered that Badaline usually appears through mirrors.
I am seriously impressed what you did by making this soundtrack with a twist. Your work is phenomenal and will be more than recognizable for your career.
I can definitely understand why a lot of people hate this Level, BUT you can't deny that this section alone sets it apart from the others. The whole atmosphere of it felt dangerous, but in a quiet and controlled way. *Now?* The whole stage just feels like a nightmare. Eyeball monsters are immortal and hunt you down until they literally can't keep chasing you, most sections are rushed with few safe places to stand on, and even your friend is trapped with you, unable to do anything because of his own problems. It's horrible... *but no matter what, you have to keep moving.*
This is sad yet hopeful, like watching yourself in the mirror and telling yourself everything is gonna be fine. I'm loving this soundtrack, so good even if I didn't play the whole game yet.
This music is frightening : it feels like something is on my chest, and isn’t letting me breathe, it’s horrible, and the reverse Quiet and Falling, it’s really stressing..gnisserts yllaer s’ti ,gnillaF dna teiuQ esrever eht dna ,elbirroh s’ti ,ehtaerb em gnittel t’nsi dna ,tsehc ym no is gnihtemos ekil sleef ti : gninethgirf si cisum sihT
When I played that game I was exactly in Madeleines place. I'm better now but this beautiful song helps me remind me of how fragile your mental state can be. It's perfect!
It gets more intense, and with the feeling of going back to do something as its reversed. Perfect music for "confronting the problem" as the old woman said.
I remember the first time I played through this chapter and heard the whispers! I got really spooked out by it, this song in general and the seekers trying to kill me. Then I heard the track in reverse and I was amazed! This is why Celeste is my favorite game and 5A is my favorite chapter. Thank you Lena
6:08 to the end really seems to have a "Madeline. Get over it. Theo is counting on you. You need to get out of here" sort of vibe. Most of the song before it really sounds like a panicky or "I'm trapped" kind of feeling, but after around the 6 minute mark the song starts picking up again Lena Raine is really good at putting meaning or conveying emotions in music
Oooh mirrors. Any piece of media or game that invokves mirrors, immediately expands its value by double, much like mirrors make a room appear much larger than it is. Not to mention their significance in our own spirituality. This song is epic.
This music does more than put you on edge, it makes you anxious. The slow revolving in and out brash tone like a sort of vibrato yet... there is a clamness and beauty in how it all harmonizes and is quite at moments, yet has notes which are akin to screaming because of the heavy vibrato and ranges they are in, in my mind, you are one of the composers of all time, doing some genuinely inventive things and thinking on the level of haydn's cleverness and beethoven's exploration of music. Haydn, Beethoven, mozart, debussy, lena raine: -sincerely Uel
Aecx The whole "looking in the mirror and being scared" is basically taken to a literal level where instead of looking in the mirror *you crawl inside the mirror*
This track makes me really uncomfortable, and I mean that in the best way possible. Lena captured the tense and fearful feel she was going for absolutely _perfectly_
The slow drum beats come in when you're in any room that has a monster in it, sort of like how the synths in Golden only come in when you're in a room where the wind is blowing.
I'm sure a lot of people are aware of the hidden message in this song but do people actually stop and realize that this song is just "quiet and falling" BACKWARDS?! This is beyond creative composition.
Do you even realize that the entire game fits with everybody personal life? With all those moments in particular of everybody's life! Good and bad moments, joy and sadness love and hate positive and negative feelings, a personal journey that makes you introspect and think about past, present and... Future
I love how haunting this soundtrack is, with calm songs sprinkled throughout to change the tone according to the scene. Oh except for track 10-Anxiety, that song perfectly captures anxiety and is so perfect in every way, not that the other songs arent too, my favorite song in the whole soundtrack has to be track 8-Scattered and Lost. Perfection.

Also it's so disorienting, there's dozens of different paths
Actually this is my favorite level.
Some people afraid of the dark. And some people see beauty in it.
*right*.
Honestly, the hardest level for me was the resort (so far I’m currently at the resort again in chapter 7)
The way you blend synth and instrumental percussion is unreal.
Do you record with live instruments or are they synthetic? Just curious. Either way the effect of you create organic and machine sounds, in the way that you do, is so affecting. So cool. Thank you.

'I'm at the bottom of the ocean,

TwoEcksKay With silent I meant that she makes very little noise, not that you literally cant hear her.
How has nobody responded to this masterfully written comment?
And this is where the Beholders come in. They are (probably) Theo's anxiety. Not only due to the eye thing, but also because of the fact that they dash with a green afterimage, and Theo uses green.

Especially with the reversed whispering
It reminds me of... something. I cant put my finger on it, and it feels completely abstract when I focus on it. It's some distant memory, maybe a dream I had.
at 2:10 you can hear whispers too, they say "sometimes, i dont know... whats, going on anymore..."
It gave me so many chills when I first heard it in-game.
I was like: ... wait what the fu... Goddamn lady, stop whispering in my ear!
...oh i probably gotta reverse you, don’t i?
When the drums kick in at 7:07 i get major chills
Also i love the atmosphere this song creates, it's so creepy and lonely and sounds full of isolation, and then the ending just kicks into gear and it flips the track into an epic ending, love it! Yet another amazing track from the best game OST ever!
I listen to and enjoy a lot of music people might call "oppressive". This is the only music I've that genuinely seems to deserve that moniker. It's good, but... painful. It feels heavy with guilt for sins long ago.
Sins that shouldn't matter anymore and yet continue to haunt you

It’s like the True Lab in Undertale.
I’m just glad Theo’s here to keep us company.
very true
"I'm helping!"
Why are some people so obsessed with undertale these kind of comments and people make me cringe
I don't think the Temple would have had such a terrifying effect on me if it wasn't for this amazing soundtrack. It really makes you feel claustrophobic, anxious, and all you want to do is get out.

You may be trapped here forever with your personified thoughts.
the part where you get to the giant eye at the very end and the music just corrupts always gives me goosebumps
