I love how theo's monsters in the mirror are him being trapped and tons of eyes watching him because he loves to post on social media so the eyes are the people watching him and he feels trapped
wha
omg thanks a lot for saying that :(
Omfg I didn’t notice that
The eyes represent how much he cares about what people think of him and the pressure he feels from others.
Also while carrying Theo's cage, it seems like the eyes are following Madeline, but they're really following Theo, which is a pretty cool detail.
Also, if you follow Theo on Ig (TheoUnderStars), you can see that prior to the game he struggled with all this of trying to adjust to other people's expectations: find an stable job, earn good money. He couldn't bring himself to do that, and took the trip to Celeste also to connect to his grandpa, who was his rolemodel. So the eyes are pretty much the representation of Theo feeling the entire world is judging him and paying attention to his actions and failures
Thank you for creating something so beautiful for us all.

~ This plays, reversed, in the final part of the Mirror Temple ~
I always cry whenever I remeber this
This is written on my wall
for future reference, this is referring to track 12 (in the mirror), not 11.

Man, being trans makes this hit so much harder. The part about not recognizing the person you see in the mirror is scary relatable...
Stunning. One of the best game osts I've ever heard, shades of Metroid Prime, Resident Evil and Joe Hisaishi.
Wow thank you! Those are some tremendous comparisons~
This song reminds me of the typewriter rooms in Resident Evil. Love it

I love you, i keep listening all the time "Even If We Were Birds", We're Beautiful.
You're beautifuuul
Calming, yet has a feel to make you uncomfortable about your surroundings. Overall this piece is beautiful, especially when you get to the Depths part and when those little piano strikes play. Thank you, Lena Raine
That feeling when you finally face your trauma, and figure out that it wasn't your fault. This song captures that "shit, I've been running for so many years" feeling perfectly. Thank you.
Okay I'm sorry for replying to your 3 year old comment, but yes. Exactly that feelings and uhm... I kinda just like.. yk... you made me realize my trauma isn't my fault. I couldn't have prevented it and shit, still, it always felt so terrible and painful. I'm always scared to loose another person I love. (For context: my gf got hit by a motorcycle and passed away.)
Wow. Yeah.
My legs are getting tired and I'm out of breath.
The Temple is such a nice quiet place. But... it’s so _off._
You just witnessed Madeline go through an anxiety attack, and suddenly the game acts like it never happened. Theo is suddenly missing, and all these statues seems so weird.
Hey... what’s that big mirror here for?
The reason that for that is because it's supposed to be! Madeline is walking through an incredibly dangerous mountain, but this calm music and ancient temple don't quite fit in.....
Until the other side is accessed, then it makes sense.

This song feels so deceptively calming. It’s so somber and chill but also sad and empty sounding. The slight intense buildup of the song gives It the feeling of something balancing. The awe of balance but also the fear that it all fall down at any moment. It’s quiet subdued and mysterious. Almost subtly anxious
And then there's the sound that sounds like someone rubbing glass... Probably Mix Master Theo thinking up a jam for us to listen to when he gets out
I like to describe this song as "quiet but not calm", just like Madeline inside.
I Remember once I was so depressed and I Played this song (at a low sound level) and I went to bed and close my eyes ... , A few moment later I WAS IN A DREAM And in the dream I was looking to my face in the mirror and I smile to myself IT WAS THE GREATEST FEELING I'VE EVER HAD , then I woke up AND I WAS IN A VERY GREAT MODE , I know some of you won't believe it but I sower it happen ,try it , I'll never ever forget that experience ,(English is my second language I can't Express it enough) , THANKS LENA THANK YOU SOO MUCH

Madeline says this while you have the chat with Theo about what living with chronic anxiety is like.
indie games have the best soundtracks, its like they were composed with love and care on its basis, so beautiful...
Not them all
How alot of games used to be made back in the day, before companies became AAA and corporations imposed their rules on the way their games are made.
Except Genshin Impact although is success from Asia
@genshin does have amazing music though
Songs with no lyrics can still be very relatable, and I think that sometimes we could all relate to this song, when you're feeling lost
3:50 I frickin love those aquatic like sounds, it reminds me to the old dk country water leverls
I thought the same thing! This track is amazing
Definitely inspired from there.
Every composer knows those tracks and the likeness is unmistakable.
yeah it's great!
it also gives you this feeling you are going deeper than you should.. getting lost in a dangerous place where some thing is just begging to go wrong. both the level and this music gave me this feeling and it's honestly incredible how different music can feel depending on the person
i was reading your comment and i was asking myself: "Which aquatic sounds?" Just a second later they started to sound.
Edit: I just noticed that these sounds can be related to what Madeline said: " Depression is like being far below the surface in the ocean" (or something like that)
For me it reminds me of your thoughts in bubbles, passing through your brain.
The sentimentality and lonely feeling this song evokes is truly special. I never imagined buying this seemingly simple platformer off steam that I would experience such a rich story, right level design, and absolutely breathtaking soundtrack. Great music really completes a games world, and this music does so perfectly. I really hope Lena Raine is asks to make soundtracks for many games in the future, and rest assured I’ll be playing them if just to hear the music.
I think this comment highlights that two people can hear the same thing, and feel somethiing totally different. When I hear this song, I sense i feeling of longing for something that seems so out of reach, but being forced to go thrugh life without it anyway. I really enjoyed your perspective on it too! This soundtrack is so amazing, and it's really cool how it can do that!
Metroid Foo
It's nice to see Lena's music in a game like Minecraft now, especially since that game took a good chunk out of my childhood.
Lena stonks RISING
She’s composing for Minecraft and deltarune now so your wish has been granted
For those who like this track: you may also like Chopin's "Prelude 20, Opus 28". It's very famous and has a lot of descending piano chords as well.
I like your profile picture
Good recommendation.
As soon as I heard this for the first time in the Mirror Temple it immediately reminded me of the Temple of Droplets theme from The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. Also a great track with a similar vibe and those descending piano chords.
I personally like Gnossienne No. 1 Lent by Erik Satie since it has that nice melancholic sort of feel to it, especially when its played more slowly.
But these piano chords are ascending D: D:
The arppegios, right?
This song isn't a storm, or a clear sunny day. It's a small shower. Calming, yet saddening. Happy, but as if there is something deeper hidden.
This is so well made since it simultaneously gives off a calm, melancholy feeling while being just slightly off and eerie.
The inspiration is the Resident Evil 1 save room theme, which was even more unsettling, with it's addition of oddly tuned, distant whistling.
I feel like the only reason she doesnt have a panic attack on the temple floor is the sheer will to find Theo
Well, I think that in one scene she contemplates suicide, but keeps going for Theo, so
@@alilua2489 yeah she really only made it due to Theo (especially since the seekers [those monster things] throughout the level are thought to represent suicidal thoughts)
@@cheese0827huh, didn’t know about that seekers theory
Celeste and Hollow Knight have the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a game

Agreed, but add Minecraft and Undertale.

@@maccraft2014 Not minecraft. Well, ofc its music is extremely nostalgic. But they aren't very well made imo. They're pretty good, but I wouldn't say its some of the best.
Sometimes you can feel like your life is a spiral. And the only way you can go in it is down.
You can't make yourself tell anyone about it. You shut your fears, insecurities and anxieties inside yourself, miserably trying to hide what you feel from others. You distance yourself from the people you care about - from people that care about *you.*
You are quiet. And you are _falling._
I love how it sounds like there's slow and calm breathing in the background, and it legitimately helps me mentally stabilize myself
I absolutely adore this piece, it's sad, yet calming. Peaceful, yet foreboding. Absolutely ambient and fits perfectly with the Temple and the sheer openness and unknown it provides. But one thing I also like about it, is that it gives that sense of familiarity. Like you've heard it somewhere before, and yet it still feels foreign to you. People are saying it sounds like DK Country water levels, RE save room, Zelda, and other games tracks and various classical composers. But I think that's the point. Take into consideration the reversed words of Madeline:
"Sometimes, I... don't really know... what's going on anymore. I... I don't... know who I am. I just... look in the mirror, and... don't know who I'm looking at. Or... who's looking at me. I... think a lot... about... where... my train of thought is going... and it's not always a good place. And that scares me. I don't... like... scaring myself. I don't..."
The feelings that this song invokes I think portrays how she feels. She knows her reflection, but yet while she should be feeling a sense of familiarity with it, instead she is uncomfortable with it, and it feels foreign to her. She worries herself. Scares herself. She worries about her future, and I think this song's foreboding yet familiar nature captures that perfectly.
I think that's beautiful, even if I'm just reading into it too much.
no, you aren't reading into it too much,
that was beautiful.
When you mention familiarity… it scares me. What Madeline describes… it becomes comforting after enough time has passed. And that’s the scariest part about it.
Listening to this late at night and reflecting on my life so far really makes me think.
If I see myself in a mirror, could that be the “Part of Me” that I haven’t come to terms with? What if our reflections are only visible to us because we have unfinished business or grievances to deal with in our lives?
Tha's deep, man.
Heaven knows about how many unfinished grievances and broken dreams we humans have acquired over time.
Sometimes, it hurts to look in the mirror, but you do it anyway, because you *HAVE TO* confront your demons, somehow.
Nah, pretty sure it's just glass.
I don't know if I'm mistaken, and please forgive me if this comes across as insensitive, but I feel as though this music isn't just from someone who can write good music and knows their key signature moods and chord progressions. This is written by someone who feels, loves, and lives the music they've written, or at the very least does a really good job of making it seem that way. Forgive me for the mirror pun, this game not only made me take a step back and reflect on my own mental issues, but this song in particular is almost haunting. It's so simple, yet it's so beautiful. The broken triads or whatever those are called in the first half and the time to reflect on life in the second is so well executed. If there's anything I took away from this game it was the soundtrack and the story (oh and I guess the platforming was pretty fun and infuriating too). I'm sure you've received tons of compliments before, and that I'm not even close to being done with life's hardships, and that the odds of you reading this are zero to none - but I just want to say thank you for creating this soundtrack and sharing it with the world. The first time I heard the track "Anxiety" I started to feel very uncomfortable and actually began having trouble breathing smoothly. Now, after going through all of the C-Sides, I can say that this game (and a few mental images of feathers) has helped me get a grip on what to do when I feel like I'm having a panic attack. You've actually made my life, and the lives of many other people by the look of it, a lot easier to put into perspective. Thank you. Your work has helped me change myself for the better.
This exact same feeling is what I went through the first time I heard it. It's inexplicably deep. Leaves you speechless. Empty. Calm. Quiet. Aptly named as well.
🤔 some day aliens will study comments like this.
Amidst all the baseless hate and anger, there is still sincerity on RUclips. How fascinating.
How could that be seen as insensitive???

So I just got back to playing Celeste after a long break. Entering this chapter, man. I had to pause for a minute. The song that began playing was beautifully crafted, but also left a very unsettling tone. Something about the temple didn’t feel right.
After a trek through the dangerous mountain, a really calm track just suddenly coming out of nowhere caught me off guard.
This piece set the tone of the level right off the bat. It’s so beautiful. Thank you, Lena. 💙

quiet and falling is honestly a perfect name for this piece, the throes of depression the mirror temple represents can often feel like helplessly drifting into the void, spiraling into entropy. Thank you for this.
I always listen to this on my bus home. This song always helps me to lighten up after a hard day. I love Celeste, but I love it's OST even more.
The way the tempo keeps slowing down and speeding up constantly keeps you slightly off balance and it's like you can't stop listening. 11th track, best track.
@Jay L are you ok
Love how the tempo fluctuates a bunch. Really feels like someone's talking to you rather than just a bunch of preplanned midi notes
the music in a game can help elevate it from being something technically great to something truly special, great job on the soundtrack!!
Ellis Yuen-Rapati I agree! But then you have the story....which came off as a little bit cringe to me.
riggis mafom Cringy? I don't see how Celeste's story is cringy in any way - apart from Theo's "YOLOOOO!" maybe, but that's got nothing to do with the story.
At 3:46, It feels like your slowly falling down a abyss of a ocean, where you can see and hear your feelings and emotions, as you sink deeper... This is why I love Celeste’s music as it accurately describes the emotion it wants you to feel, especially Madeline’s emotions. Lena Raine, thank you for creating such a masterpiece of an ost.
Lena, I can't even begin to explain how much I love your work in Celeste. This game, although I've only played it recently because of a sale on Switch, has quickly become a cornerstone of my very being. The music complements the tone of the game at all times and I was always feeling the right emotions at the right time. Over time, persistence has become my first answer to adversity in both video games and real life, and this is 100% because of the things Celeste taught me. Thank you for creating a riveting OST that shook me to the core every single chapter.
PS who's the genius that decided to pair the harder levels with the more upbeat remixes? Cuz thats lowkey the smartest thing a game has ever done. GOSH OKAY I'M DONE GUSHING I SWEAR, I LOVE THIS GAME AND EVERYTHING IT MADE ME FEEL
I can't overstate how much this game impacted me emotionally. It hurt to see and hear. My heart hurts every time I think about this game. The backwards theme for this really broke my heart. It felt so true, and I can't stop hearing those words, "I don't like scaring myself." EDIT: the soundtrack to this invoked more in me than HOLLOW KNIGHT'S soundtrack. That's impressive. Lena, you've created the only other soundtrack that emotionally impacted me.

yes celeste and hollow knight are something else
All the other songs: this cured my depression
This song: time to go deeper into depression
I mean it's beautiful, but c'mon, that's what you always feel at the beginning
I know right? It's like you're being dragged into something hopeless, heavy and kinda like moving sands but it's dark, you can only feel yourself losing hope, that's where the last part of that song hits the hardest, when you see yourself giving up.
Calm down, dont forget that if Music drags you into depression, Music can drag you out of depression too.
well, getting deeper into your depression is the only way to *really* cure it
i disagree. i am quite the cynic myself, but you can appreciate music without being depressed. you shouldnt let things of beauty cause you grief.
Idk. It reminds me the most of diving, being underwater and seeing unfamiliar things with only your breath to keep you company. It calms me.
Coming back to this after my first playthrough, and this was one of the first songs I sought out specifically. The emotion in it is palpable, and there's a constant sense of trepidation while you navigate the Mirror Temple. It makes me want to just sit and introspect for hours, if not have a solid cry over everything I bottled up in the past year.
This is my favorite ost in a videogame so far, dont even need to play the game to know that this piece it's like something talking to you, saying that someone lost his path, its a sad tragedy, it doesnt have to be like that, but it is, and this is how it sounds like, thank you, just thank you so much for this awsome piece of art.
Check out chrono trigger
Lena Raine, you are a musical genius. So much passion was clearly put into the music, as well as the game in general. As a musician (and video game lover) myself, I'm going to follow in your inspiring footsteps.
Best of luck to you, I say.
To me this song really emphasizes the feeling of being aimless, damn.
This song is really relaxing, until you play it on the piano.
Then, you aren’t Quiet and Falling. Instead, you’re Screaming and Ascending in Octave and Shoulder Pain (true story)
I wonder, as a studying music theorist, what were the inspirations on making this piece? Clearly this is a descending chromatic progression, but I'd love to know what the inspiration was for this. There is another piece I found on RUclips that uses such a wonderful harmonic progression called Hushabye Mountain by Rupert Austin, and many more from classical pieces that just sound so good to the ears. I am dying to know if the inspirations came from the classical era, or jazz era, or any time period really. I absolutely love this piece and it stands out the most (aside from the masterfully crafted Farewell that just tops everything instantly).
When it comes to video game music the clear inspiration is the Resident Evil 1 save room theme. The shifting arpeggios over a held keyboard chord gives it that calm, yet uneasy feel. The save room theme is also accompanied by a distant oddly tuned whistling , which adds to that uneasiness. I don't know enough classical music to say what piece original inspired Resident evil 1, but I do know that many games have tried to replicate that feeling over the years, most notably the Dark Souls menu theme.
@@cyberbird451 Excellent comparison to the resident evil theme. In fact after listening to the resident evil save theme again, that reminded me of Aquatic Ambiance from Donkey Kong Country from the SNES. It's clear we have a chain of inspirations going on and it's fascinating
