Some complain that this chapter lacks the story advancement of others, however the quiet carries meaning. It lacks the periodic narration of other chapters because Madeline is isolating herself after feeling that she failed even at simply trying to help Oshiro. She's feeling as if she damages the things she touches regardless of her intent. She implies this in the sole conversation at the beginning of the chapter - she doesn't need anyone to do this. She's better off alone.
Then Theo appears at the end. His presence in the gondola calms her as the weight of everything starts to suffocate her. She begins to realize maybe she doesn't need to go it alone. Then after helping her, in the next chapter Theo needs her. Pushing through the weight of her fears she devotes herself once more to saving someone - despite failing earlier, despite isolating. And this time, she succeeds.

Madeline couldn't help Oshiro, so she's literally pushing herself to her body's limit against the freezing wind in an act almost reminiscent of self-harm. There's a sense of frustration and self-hatred here.

This song conveys the sort of tranquility you might feel even in the harsh upper reaches of a mountainside, far isolated from the rest of the world. At the same time, the combination of long rumbling bass notes and arpeggios (?) conveys danger and majesty, as if to mirror Madeline's growing realization (perhaps respect?) that the mountain is capable of far more than she could have anticipated. This juxtaposition of tranquility and tension reminds me of Environmental Station Alpha, and I really like it here, too. Also, maybe it's just my experience playing the game, but I can hear the wind in this one, even when it's not actually blowing.
I hope I'm not trying too hard to sound profound here. It's just that I've come to really enjoy the feeling of this track despite how long of a listen it is. I tend to be pickier about longer VGM tracks, but this OST is proving an exception to that.

    • @danhara
      @danhara 5 лет назад +10

I don't know if you're going to read this or not, but I get the feeling from another ost in the destiny, specifically "the journey home" because it makes you feel isolated, wondering around an abandoned city.
The second is "tranquillity", as it is (for me at least) completely calming and relaxing.

I like chapter 4 because the game’s settings are “abandoned metropolitan city,” “Resort haunted by the ghost of it’s former owner,” “temple that makes you come face to face with your dark side,” “Another universe/the fucking moon with fish?” And then this ones just there like we do want to remind you that this game is in fact about mountain climbing.

This Chapter seemingly has no meaning to the story. It’s just a simple climb in the upper reaches of the mountain right? Just some filler? Wrong. This is the game giving you a break. It allows you to appreciate the mountain’s true beauty, the wonders you can achieve. Slightly scary, but relaxing, letting you calm down, and prepare for the next challenge.

This was honestly one of the most meaningful chapters and music pieces in the game to me, because everything was just so... quiet. It all captured the weight of our first big failure, and the feeling of pushing through regardless. Getting up from a failure like that, it feels empty, it feels like we can only rely on ourselves, and we don’t even know why we’re trying, but we keep going. It feels like we’re going against the wind~
Here’s a theory- nearly every obstacle we face on the Mountain, Madeline created and inflicted on herself. Madeline envisioned the wind, her fears, her falling, leaping barely possible jumps, and the Mountain brought it out for her.
Celeste Mountain is probably a pleasant climb for someone in a good mental state.

Let me share a little story. I was walking around the city, listening to the music. It was about to rain, so sky was gray, you could feel ozone in the air. You'd dismiss the sky and probably continue walking, right?
But then Golden started playing and I just so happened to look up. I was stunned. I felt like this sky was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life.

I first heard about Celeste in someones review video of switch games you should play, as someone who loves hiking and games that remind me of my childhood Celeste stuck out to me. Like hell yeah I wanna climb this mountain!! I purchased it for my birthday finally, and I fell in love. What I wasn't expecting was the inward journey that would come from it. I cried so many times during my gameplay, and each song really captures each mood throughout the game. Now, I've played the game twice through and I listen to songs from this soundtrack on almost a daily basis. Lena, you did an amazing job composing and creating one of the best soundtracks I've heard from a video game in a really long time. You, along with the rest of the developers from Celeste have given me a chance to look at myself differently. Also, you very much inspired me to always chase my dreams. Something else I got for my birthday this year was a skateboard, because I've wanted to learn how to skate ever since I was a kid. (23 isn't too late to do the thing you always want to do btw guys). Anyway, one of the first days that I was riding and just getting used to being on my board, I had "First Steps" playing through my headphones, and it gave me that little boost of positive energy and confidence that I needed. There was something about that moment that just really stuck out to me, and I wanted to share it. Thank you, and I can't wait to see what you create in the future!

When I first got to this stage, the first thought that came to my mind is "heaven". It's such a beautiful section of the game not just by 2D standards but video game art as a whole. It's truly incredible. However, at the same time when you get this sense of "heaven" and the soundtrack with it, the first time you encounter the wind, you begin to realize how amazing "heaven" is. You've only reached the entrance of "heaven" by climbing up this majesty called a mountain, and now you're seeing what heaven is all about. It's very easy to fall down.

I loved this level so much, it honestly surprised me. The wind created such a creative challenge, but really damn hard too. I think the music is really what kept me sane. Bashing my face into spikes, over and over and over again would normally piss me off to hell and back but, something about Celeste didn’t make me mad. Hollow knight as fun as it is infuriated me at many times, but I was able to sit down and play Celeste for 2 and a half hours straight without getting frustrated at all, and I’m sure the music is what helped me. The way it loops is beautiful to me, it’s long, similar but always changing, and the way it builds is incredible to me. It really helps emphasize the progress I make, and captures the mentality of Madeline beautifully. I sit down and listen through the whole soundtrack on loop while I’m working, and I’m extremely greatfull It’s uploaded officially to RUclips

When I first played through Celeste, I actually felt a lot of sympathy for Madeline. I don't necessarily have depression, but I can sometimes get panic attacks and If I get mad at someone I end up lashing out at them even if they are trying to help. This chapter just feels isolated from the rest. It's so bright, but dark and lonely at the same time. Almost all the chapter silent, no dialogues at all. What is truly amazing about this is how each time the wind pushes you at an almost harming speed, you expect the next room to be the end, but it just continues until Theo finds you. That's when the torture both Madeline and the player are suffering stops.

There are many musical patern that repeat in many different sountracks accross the game. Well, there are some strong recurent motives, but also a lots of melodies in the background
But I cannot point these one. I just feel, like, a sense of familiarity. It is really subtle.
Leitmotives aren't uncommon. But it is often either too obvious, either too subtle.
Here, the balance is perfect. But in some cases it doesn't seem to have been planned thourougly and consciously, more like a feeling that is conveyed along the whole sountrack

The blowing wind and general atmosphere of the level probably contribute a whole lot.

this chapter feels like the only one in the video game (besides farewell) where you are truly alone, and the harshness of this level stems not from badeline chasing you or oshiro snapping, it comes from straight from Madeline. Golden ridge should really be a place to take a breather, beautiful clouds floating in the sky, crystal clear pools of water glimmering, and yet it is somber. It’s only when Madeline meets up with Theo that she’s ever able to calm down and experience joy in the entire chapter, even after having an absolutely awful panic attack
