    This is what a proper analysis looks like. There were so many moments that could have changed the game and at the end of the day, NZ had the chance to take the lead twice but didn't convert. Both teams deserved to win. I'm a Bok supporter and I thought after the red card and the fact we kept them out during the first quarter which is generally when the ABs hammer teams - just like they did to us in NZ - , that we had the cup to lose. SA had the hardest run to a final in the history of the sport and you could see the guys had nothing left to give. 5 more minutes and its a NZ victory. The country had 3 collective heart attacks in 3 weeks. I cannot explain how much this meant to us and want to thank the ABs for being the team they are. Rugby is a hooligans game played by gentlemen. Thank you NZ for being gentlemen.

      Preamble to stats too long. Cards were correct. Cane should learn how to tackle. Simple. Frizell Kolisi and Cheslin dwarves yellows. No issues there. No game is ruined by cards. That's usually the lamest excuse ever. Why do NZ get so many red cards and Wales none over 5 years?

During the final, even with 14 players, I found myself saying "you can do it". I was amazed. I was believing AGAIN. When the whistle went I was disappointed. The NZ scrum definitely held up, but I think it's also worth mentioning that Bongi going off so early starts a bit of a domino effect which really stacks up against the Springboks in the second half. Bongi is obviously meant to play at least 50 min, Deon is meant to come in fresh with the rest of the bench. As it plays out Deon is incredibly tired at the end of the game, which can have meaningful implications for the Springboks front row. Even if you are bringing on six fresh forwards the effect is very much blunted with a front row that isn't operating at 100% your thoughts?

    • @nicoboshoff
      @nicoboshoff Год назад +7

      Bongi is the linchpin for the bench. Allows Deon to come up as dynamic flanker and finish at hooker, line outs are steadier and I think Bongi just scrums better than Deon so Ox and Nyakane would look more impactful. Deon was scrumming with cramping legs and a bum shoulder. So yeah, Bongi being taken out of the game so early was disastrous and a true testament to massive balls on Deon.

    "The game's ruined now", I said to my wife when Cane's red card was confirmed. I wanted the Boks to win, but not like that. I wasn't angry at the officials though... I was angry at Cane for a clumsy tackle. Fair play to NZ though for making the Boks EARN that win. I will say that all 4 cards were correctly called in my opinion. I see comments from some quarters that Kolisi should have been red too, but that's a completely unhinged view.

    As disappointing as the result was for the departing players, the AB supporters and the sport in general, we can find comfort in the fact that the AB style, the strength of their players, their mana, and belief in their plan was good enough to make the boks sweat the result until the last seconds, despite having a sanctioned numbers advantage for most of the game. Running, free-flowing rugby is not dead. The game is still for everyone, not just forwards and goal kickers. But well done South Africa, the plan and the gamble paid off, you won this one fair and square with immense pressure (and a slice of good fortune). At least we don’t need to endure a Rassie ref analysis video, or god forbid an English or Aus win 😂

    • @greatleapforwards
      @greatleapforwards Год назад +7

      the "Rassie analysis video" comment is getting a bit old now. it is time to move on. the way he did it at the time (over 2 years ago!) was probably not right, but the outcome got people talking about analysing decisions (and its still ongoing). Secondly - to say that SA style does not include running rugby is a bit disingenuous. We have an exciting backline (obviously not to the level of the AB's), but the weather on the night and the occasion (and hence the gameplan) did not call for that.

    There are so many what-ifs in every game. Debates that will go on for years. At the end of it all, a RWC win is all that remains. This is why World Cup finals are played in the manner they are. Because the final result is what gets you the cup for another 4 years. Hard luck to the AB’s they had their chances but luck was not on their side that night. This is the beauty and drama of the game - anything can happen on the night between two evenly-matched teams, and that’s what keeps us hooked. Every single time. Long may it be. I think the loss of bongi is totally underestimated in people's analysis. The stats show AB's got parity at scrums, doesn't show mauls not used to attack, doesn't show how with neutered lineouts our attack platform was nullified. It impacts the backline stats for SA. It's also interesting how the AB's are the second team this world cup to perform better with 14 men than with 15 men. I also believe the French, Irish and AB's all cracked under the pressure in the last 10 minutes which was the difference between winning and loosing.

    My prediction was wrong, and I'm glad about it. I underestimated my own country. Thought they were out of gas but seems that it was just a dip against England.

      I don't think they underperformed against England, i think it is a matter of playstyle matching, if you play a restrictive rugby it can be hard to go up against a team with the same style. It seems Rassie didn't properly predict this one, I have rarely seen him panick that much in the box. They still managed in the end

      SA just scraped through the 1/4 and Semi - marginal bad calls by refs gifted them the final, then Wayne Barnes MVP performance (he should get a bronze statue outside one of the stadiums in South Africa) was the icing on the cake - South Africa and coaches did a great job with the cards they were dealt.

    I have heard alot about if New Zealand had kicked the conversation or the penalty but South Africa also missed opportunities. Siya Kolisi collected the ball early in the second half and popped it to Damian De Allende who was held up over the line. Then a grubber was put through by Damian Willemse and Kurtley Arendse dropped the ball over the try line. If that try was scored it would have been 19-6 to the Boks.

    With Marx out of the squad and then Bongi going out after 3 minutes in a final I think really changed the Boks plan on how they wanted to use the bench and loosing Bongi was probably the worst thing that could've happened in the game and then for the Boks to still somehow scratch a win without such an important player on the field? Wow!!! I think that alone is a head scratcher.
    Another day, another bounce, a different decision, another injury -all could've changed the end result.
    Unfortunate so many NZealanders think they lost the game because of the ref, these games are always so close.
    Yes there's unfortunate problems in the game that should be looked at and the cards for head contact are 1 of those 50/50 areas where interpretations are always present and we've seen this inconsistency throughout this RWC
    Well done to both sides!

      @@runforrestrun1965 Nah doesn't surprise me that a 14 man AB team seems to play as good, if not better with a man down.
      Boks been working very hard to avoid cards in this RWC and still Kolisi and Kolbe received yellows in the final. And for NZ, Frizell yellow for deliberately taking Bongi off the field within the first 3 minutes, it's because he had to leave the field that a yellow was awarded.
      The upgraded to red for Cane was expected following the pattern of how this RWC has been going.
      S Africans aren't a fan of these cards either, hopefully they stop being so anal about them.

    This is the most accurate analysis of the game that i've seen, and I follow a lot of rugby pundits/ youtubers/ influencers.
    Springboks took the points when they could, and that is how they put on the scoreboard pressure. All Blacks kicked to corner a couple of times and didn't amass points at every opportunity.
    Then, Boks kicked away the ball to stay out of their half. They counted on their defense to prevail and were able to prevent a lot of ABs from making the gain line (only Ardie, Jordie and Telea had moderate success there,) which resulted in them kicking after several phases and not gaining ascendancy. These kicks were fielded well by the Boks. Because they were also able to prevent the New Zealand ball from going wide they were able to contain the attack and control the All Blacks ability to run multiple phases.
    The red card; that's squarely on Sam, completely upright in the tackle.
    A lot of people complaining about the TMO; that's been how the game adjudicated for a couple of years now. TMO can refer any foul play and can refer any infraction in plays leading up to a try. The bunker making the red card decision, same thing- *this is not new.* This system has allowed play to continue, increasing the entertainment value, but to also make the correct call. And it's far better than when the ref and TMO would look at multiple replays and multiple angles and full speed and in slow motion, resulting in some games that had 60 minute halves.
    Well done the All Blacks. That was a hell of a performance for only having 14 men.
    Congratulations Springboks- worthy World Champions.

The fact you can see the game in this light where Hansen and others cannot is astonishing really. Maybe the emotion has got the better of them.
