- It's a question I've been thinking since the final whistle on Saturday night and especially, after the World Rugby 'Dream Team' featured only Eben Etzebeth from the World Champions. This is a TEAM, maybe more than any other gone before it...but are they the Greatest?

Tim, you actually brought tears to my eyes. At times we do feel that the rugby world is against us, for whatever reason they have. To have someone like you making the comments that you do is heart warming to say the least. A massive thank you from South Africa 🇿🇦

Only one of these members is a South African. The rest are drawn from the UK, Australia and Ireland and represent the sides that emanate from those parts of the world. The fact that SA has the same number of representatives as the US is beyond absurd. It would be equivalent to including only one representative of Germany or Brazil on FIFA but having three South Africans as well. These are the people who steer the ship and they're as corrupt as the people who run FIFA. I'm glad they snub SA. It's a badge of honour.

@@Bokgat The list is available on the World Rugby website. It took no 'great effort' to name them. They're corrupt because they preside over an organisation that doesn't represent the rugby family. The recent World Cup was held in France, not South Africa, despite France holding the comp ten years earlier and despite South Africa being chosen as the recommended host in a lengthy report that was subsequently abandoned. The recent 'team of the year' contained one South African and ten players from teams that didn't even make it out the quarter finals. The coach of the year is an Englishman who may have taken his side on an eighteen-match unbeaten streak but also cost them the World Cup by not rotating in the group stages. The list goes on, but I can't be bothered to continue populating it. Your attempt to goad me with a reference to 'having the balls' made me laugh. A real man calls someone out to his face, not on the interweb.
The way Siya ran over to Cheslin and embraced him in a massive man hug as the final whistle blew says everything you need to know about the way he cares for his team - each on individually!
He just ran straight for the man who was hurting most just a second ago and lifted him up and celebrated.
I wouldn't be surprised if he had done the same thing if they had lost.
Yes, that was another special moment from Siya. He is the best Captain at this level, and should have been in the dream team based on his skills, his comeback from major injury in such a short time and his humility as a captain who really cares for each of his team mates.

I don’t think there has ever been a team that is more “squad” focused then this SA team. Even the way the bench is viewed and used is completely different. SA has changed rugby from a 15 man game to a 30 man game. That’s the biggest innovation this team has brought. Great video Tim! As always.
Revolutionary way of thinking about your player pool. In 2019 I thought the bench were better than the starters.
We were forced to as we had to play effectively five finals in a row at huge intensity for each game. As a starting team this was not the GOAT (prolly NZ 2011), but as a squad with sheer depth that was able to play five high intensity games week after week on the trot we were GOAT.
They play 8 man rugby, and their boring.
There is something that no one is commenting on...(during the world cup tornament .. the AB couch told the world that springboks play boring type of rugby game..we were heavily challenge by that...and his own team too...to show who comes on top.. you'll be the judge)
As a kiwi, I'm conflicted year to year the all blacks are more consistent, but South Africa since returning to world rugby in the 90,s have. been better performers at rwc level, but you have to take your hats off to the bokkes
A large factor in it is what Rassie said a couple years back, (to paraphrase, since I can't remember the exact quote, but it basically along the lines of), "The only thing the Springboks care about are the World Cups, and every test match inbetween the World Cups are little more than preparation and testing in preparation for the world cup, and we don't mind or really care if we lose a couple test matches while trying different combinations and tactics".

I'd say we choked, but we only at 14 players on the field for 60 minutes..and we dominated the second half....congrats to the spring boks, but best team ever, give me a break.

Cards should be given for intentional foul play or repeated infringement not because an attacking player switch direction on a team and catches you out of position even siya card was ridiculous.... ufc fighters get punched in the head for 15-25mins but god forbid getting a shoulder to the head which has a bit more padding than thin gloves. World rugby will kill the game with these bullshit rules they bring in. If players want to stay safe don't play a physical game
England 2003 got me into rugby. I can name the entire 22. They ran a fantastic WC campaign. Springboks play for a higher purpose. It's for the people. It's for the struggle. World Rugby struggled to put that into their template of awards.

What is so amazing about this team had the all blacks gone for the poles instead of the line they would of won France was unlucky England nearly beat us so what's so special about this team I think the worst of all world squads ever scrum was pushed around
Hi Tim. I’m a 78 year old grandmother. I have so enjoyed your commentaries. You’ve helped me understand so many aspects of the game. I just love how fair you are in your comments. I am one very proud South African. My love & gratitude to our Springbok team for bringing the sunshine in.
I’m a Wales fan and follow France as a second team. When the boks beat France in the quarters I was ambivalent about them but full of respect. I then, for the first time I can remember, supported them when the final came around. And you said it. It is their teamwork and self belief that is so impressive. Along with great coaching. I thought the substitution of Libbock was a master stroke. Won that game for SA. I also now understand the trauma on the faces of SA when they were beaten by Japan IN 2015. The RWC is everything to them. Well, hats off - and look forward to seeing you in Cardiff next time!

That loss against Japan brought the country to a halt, it was like the country mourned for a week. haha But we know how NZ feels we've been there its hard but that sets the tone for the next one

Exactly & that’s why their wins mean so much more. Barnes’ RWC 2011 final was THE worst, the French were robbed due to dodgy calls & Barnes folding under the (national) pressure.
Every single SA player gave it their all to topple champion teams week after week. Siya Kolisi player of the tournament (imho) what a 💯% humble, inspirational leader🎉🎉😘
And Ardie Savea as a Samoan leader & player on the field…absolute inspiring❤

these Bokke may not be the best players, they're maybe not playing the "sexiest" rugby but they're the team that can scrap and fight and drag a result out of every game no matter what. They're the ultimate knockouts team with the greatest captain of all time.
This Boks team deserves a lot more credit than what they get. We’ve seen top class international teams over the years but this team is exceptionally special both on and off the field. Full respect for what they have achieved 🙌🙌

I will definitely agree with you Tim, As a South Africans we've witnessed this team grow, as a Nation we grew with the team... They certainly are the Greatest.
Most of these players came out harsh circumstances, Cheslin only started playing Rugby at the age of 16 after his school noticed how fast he is. Some players like Siya came from rural beginnings bare foot, food for once or twice a week.
The team has soul, that is what speaks to people, people can relate, As you say if you're a real rugby fan you will spot the difference.
Honestly I am grateful that the world can see what South Africa went through every rugby match in terms of critics, it's only now that the west notice what we've been saying for decades. This formed the mental strength you witness today, they are so good at blocking out the noise that nothing phased them.

Lived there in 1976/8, great rugby then. Great team now but I think a great team in a financially stable country is better than a great team in a destroyed, corrupt South Africa of today. 4 Rand to the pound then, over 20 now even though it’s propped up. The luckiest team of all time. They lost to Ireland, and scrape three wins largely due to refereeing inadequacies.
Kolbie's charge down was illegal, the first penalty against England was clearly not a penalty and NZ went down to 14 before they could beat them, just.
And with World Rugby disgraceful treatment of Tom Curry, it has left a bitter taste in mine and many others mouths.
It seems that WR have taken up with the critical race theory, that preaches only white people can be racist.

To have used a sport so synonymous with apartheid to unite a nation is a tremendous feat and perhaps explains to non South Africans how important rugby is to us. Thanks Tim.
It also sheds light on how wise and far-sighted Nelson Mandela was. Without his endorsement, The Boks would never have become the inspirational force they are.
We witnessed it in 1995, gold watch Bevan for his decisive role in the SF and kiwis vomiting around the pitch. Rugby is beyond sport for sure in SA.

This team encapsulates the best of South Africa - brotherhood, faith, perseverance and joy. It has reminded us of our roots of Ubuntu - 'I am what I am because of who we all are" and who we can be when we stand together. Their ethos: 'the sum is better than individuals' and their undying committment to give 100%, in my albeit biased viewpoint, makes them the G.O.A.T. Thank you Tim for the depth your understanding about the Springboks and South Africa!
There is only one thing that makes me sad about this amazing team: Many will not be there anymore during the next WC. But I guess this is how legends are made :) Thank you boys for all the incredible emotions I had during this 2 months... I was lucky enough to see them playing 2 of the best ever games in Paris... If only I was South African!

As a kiwi i reckon this is without a doubt the greatest ever world cup victory as they did it the hard way playing all the best teams. No other world cup victory compares and i suspect they will be a good chance to go for a three peat in 4 years. In saying that i think as far as pure statistics for winning games and dominance between and during world cups the 2011 - 2015 ABs team is superior.
This current boks team is great though, no doubt about it!!
You have to admit, the springboks are the greatest team in world cup history. They already became the best world cup team in 2019 in history because their win percentage was already greater than the ABs in 2019

Bok fan here and I have to agree with you about your 2010-2015 team, they were top drawer, but the Springboks have now become what the ABs have always been a symbol of national unity, as Tim said it was a symbol of division and now the team is truly a mixture and the black support is huge now. I think the rest of the Rugby world needs to beware, the Boks may not manage a third World Cup in a row in 2027, but I think there will be such a crop of outstanding young black players (inspired by Kolisi) coming through that the 2031 will likely be won by SA. If that happens the production line gusher will open wide. That said the AB v Boks games are always the game for either side. Respect!

I was 9 years old when I watched the 1995 final... the buildup to that was something else!
As a child I hardly understood the significance of the 1994 election, though my parents were very much for the New South Africa. I did obviously see the massive inequality all around me and even as a child that struck me as really broken.
After the 94 election South Africa got a new Anthem (which I think is the best in the world), but during the 95 tournament we also got a kind of second anthem in the song "Shozaloza" which was sung at every game. I have a strong memory of this song being sung in church on a Sunday morning. A song in Zulu and Ndebele sung by an all-white church choir on a Sunday morning only one year after apartheid officially ended. Something different was in the air.
On Saturday evening I joined a few thousand people at a local shopping mall to watch the game on a big screen in the food court.
Being part of a crowd of all races and ages all packed in pretty much shoulder to shoulder and all cheering and screaming and dancing (and lots of holding our breath) was pure joy!
I'm rambling... I have too many thoughts and not enough time or skill...
I am just thankful for the wonderful changes that have indeed happened in our country even if we are daily plagued with a hundred problems.
The new South Africa has never delivered the delusional peace and prosperity liberals claimed. The election might have been a big step for democracy but it’s ultimately been a destructive for the country. Even Kolisi said nothing is going right. That’s purely down to appalling corrupt governance.
Finally we have someone beginning to understand what our much loved, admired Springboks are all about. It is not a team its a FAMILY. GREAT show keep up the great work 👍

Honestly, that's a feat of note and I take what you're saying about the team being the "GOAT" - the 2023 team is definitely better than the sum of their parts! The Springboks have made over 300 changes to their team in the last 25 test matches. They have used 52 players in that time. They are the first team to understand that using all your talent will be better than putting all your egs in one basket. They lost Lood, Pollard and Am before the World Cup, and then they lost Marx and Mpimpi but got Pollard and Am back. They have changed the way coaches will approach the way they use the talent in their system.
And Koch was unavailable for the final.

As a South African, I must admit we don't have the most skilful players like the 2015 AB's. No McCaw's, Carters or Nonu's, but this Springbok side showed the world how to play with your heart. Most of the Boks in this team was nobody's or quotas once, and Rassie and Jacques made something out of them. Today, we can proudly say that The Springboks are the best in the World. Thanks Tim for all the work you have done during the RWC. Respect brother!!!
Wrong, we do. It's just not something the coaches have wanted us to showcase in the playoffs, rather brute force and defense. Ox has crazy offload skills, so speak Snyman. Pollard is an attacking flyhalf who loves running the ball himself. He almost scored a try in the final doing what he likes, making hard runs into contact. Eben has good offloading. Faf has superb passing range. We have loads of skills but defense wins World Cups
This team transcends rugby. Their values are something all other teams can only aspire to ❤

There is something about the Springboks team that wins in spite of every reason why they shouldn't. But I think you summed it up perfectly: as a TEAM, the Springboks are perhaps the best of all time. There are much better individual players concentrated elsewhere but hot damn do they have a ghastly willpower and determination and team spirit.

I can only talk for myself but I believed in this team from the start of this world cup.
When we lost vs Ireland, I was not worried.
I never doubted them vs France.
I believed that we would take the win against England even while we were so far down.
I believed throughout the Finals, even taking into account that Barret might have put that shot at goal over.
Don't get me wrong, I expected tough battles (which we got, through and through) , but If a team can make me believe like this, I must consider them for the G.O.A.Ts.
I would like to know what the experience was like for the ABs 2011/15 fans.

From a kiwi perspective, it was heartbreaking knowing the final was there to be won, and we just couldn't get there, but in having said that if we couldn't win we are glad it wasn't the irish or the French in fact the bokkes were the only team we could be happy for and I think that's because our nation's share such a huge rivalry when it comes to rugby, so we as a nation are not so sad,more so just happy if we couldn't win it , atleast SA could

This team is really special. An amazing group of guys. Beating the best French team of all time in QF in one of the greatest games ever. Finding a way to beat England despite struggling and looking dead in the water with 8mins to go. Beating the AB in the final again with 1 point.....their mental stength and brotherhood togetherness is what makes them the most beloved Bok team ever. I have never seen this kind of love for any Bok team.
The 2007 team probably the best tbh, but this team the most special. The 2015 AB side arguably the best ever.
I'll be humble as a South African and say those 2011-2015 AB's were completely untouchable both during and outside the World Cups. They were also filled with absolute legends of the game.

Never forget the 1997 Sprinbok team coached by Nick Mallet that went 17 test matches unbeaten.
That run is seared into my brain. That run is the one of the reasons I wanted AB’s to beat Ireland and the fact it’s 17 and not more is why I live for England being beaten. In 25 years time I recon I will get over it.
The 09 team was a real force as well. McCaw said it was the toughest opposition he ever faced.
Yes I remember the November tour them beating France by 40 points or so and then Scotland by a cricket score. Henry Honiball our greatest ever 10.

In an age where individualism is usually more valued than collective effort, SA showed the way and is a beacon of hope for not only the sport of rugby but for their country as well. I had the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon amongst SA fans in Paris before going to the semifinal vs England and all I can say is I was amazed at what I experienced! They were a great team with a great record. Only thing I'd say with certainty is that this was the toughest world cup to win in the history of world cups, with the route the boks had to take

As a South African 🇿🇦 I could not have been prouder of our team. This Springbok team has shown everyone, what we as South Africans can achieve if we can just put politics aside, and work for the greater good of our fellow countrymen.
These players are all heroes in my eyes, and listening to you (Tim) in this video, it brought a few tears in my eyes, cause every word you said is true, and add to that the history and the stories behind each of the players in this Bok team, and you will have even more respect for them. Just like I have a world of respect for you and the videos you have posted during the world cup.

Well according to World Rugby, Andy Farrell is the best coach and also the Irish team had the best players. Strange then that the best coach couldn't get the best players to win a quarter final

Thanks Tim you really summed it up very well in an objective manner. As a South African, I listened to many games as a child over the radio at 5 in the morning against the All Blacks .. I am now 69 years and TV has spoilt us. For many years, the 1974 British Lions was the best for me, then 2015 AB and now this team. I was at quarter finals in Paris and it was just a game I will never forgot - my son of 37 years called it already a bucket list experience ! So my dear friend keep this chats going and when there is excellence point it out please. Take care

Small correction; the British & Irish Lions toured RSA in 1974. I saw them play Eastern Province in Port Elizabeth. Was stunned by the quality of Gareth Edwards and Phil Bennett. I was at Rhodes University at the time. Rugby was hugely popular amongst the Black and Coloured population in the province and there was always a huge crowd of Black and Coloured supporters that used to watch 'varsity games in an area at the end of the pitch.

I used to enjoy Dale College and Selborne College rugby in the 70's in the Eastern Cape area. Also Queens College and of course Graeme College. It was great schoolboy rugby

One point about the 2015 All Blacks. They played and beat all three other Semi Finalists in that world cup. (Argentina, South Africa and Australia). And they made it look easy. There was not another team that they could have played in that tournament that was better than those three that they beat.

You are correct in emphasizing TEAM! That's precisely it. I read many articles and listened to many pundits saying that taking Manie, Eben, and Siya off during the England game was brutal and embarrassing. Except that's not how the Boks see it, they all buy completely into the concept of "Team first, always!" Their moto is #StrongerTogether It's pretty simple, really.

SA have won back to back not in there home country. NZ did it back to back at home. SA won a Lions tour plus 2 world cups with this team. No question the team is the G.O.A.T

I watched a program on TV here in South Africa recently where they had an interview with Divan Serfontein scrumhalf and previous Springbok captain and he said when he started playing for Stellenbosch University the great Doc Craven said do not consider yourself the best because there was better players before you and there will be better players after you. Maybe we can say this about teams as well.

I'm probably biased as a South African, but I couldn't agree with you more Tim.
These Boks are certainly the best of all time and Siya is an incredible man and ambassador for the sport, and our country. I've never had the privilege of meeting him in person, but he has touched my family deeply - last year my (then) 10 year son underwent surgery and radiotherapy for a brain tumor. For the radiotherapy he had a custom made mask to keep his head in position which he had decorated with a Springbok emblem. This was brought to Siya's attention through a friend, and he took the time to record a video message of encouragement and support for my boy. You can probably imagine what that did to lift his spirits!!!
It proves to me that he is not just that way in front of the cameras; he's genuinely humble despite being one of the greatest sporting icons of our time - or perhaps of ALL time.
You have been one of the champions of RWC 2023 Tim. Congratulations. Your humility and graciousness are destined for higher honours, I am sure.
Personally I think the 1995 South African World cup team were the G.O.A.T.S. They went into the world cup with zero experience in world cup competitions. They drew a deeply divided country together. They played stopped a rampant and unstoppable Lomu. They took the game to extra time against the widely touted to win New Zealand. You could argue that that team had home ground advantage but that is not entirely true because support for the team was not constant and non support from parliament was very vociferous. It was that Springbok team that laid the foundations for this world cup, Francois Pienaar who started the tradition of exceptional people to captain the Springboks. It was the 1995 team that went out after the world cup and started coaching grass roots rugby in the townships and started initiatives like the junior school rugby leagues. It took a generation of effort, started by the 1995 team of amateurs to create what the Springboks mean now.
Interestingly, the great Jonah Lomu never scored a try against SA.

Agreed, it was also apparent when the Blitzbokke were winning lots of tournaments, individuals rarely appeared as most tries scored, most points scored ... and Cheslin and Kwagga were two of them. And the Blitzboks defense was legendary ... that demands trust and commitment ... two of the main characteristics of an elite TEAM.

We beat (edit) played 5 tier one nations and a very physical Tonga to lift the trophy 🏆🇿🇦 ..also we lost Lood de Jager (our best lineout jumper) Am and Marx before the competition
....and still tactically out smarted ABs in second half by pinning them out of range when our lineouts and scrums didn't dominate....💪🏻

Yeah but was close. Apart from a couple of decisions, but think the boks wanted to win but we're not worried either.

Great video as usual, and I couldn’t agree more! The Boks are able to produce more than what they appear to be capable of when it is needed. Arendse’s tackle was one example. Pieter-Steph was a machine in the final. Libbok giving up his spot because he knows he’s got work to do, and the team comes first. They know what victory would mean to South Africa. It is just such an absolute pity that South Africa, which is more than the sum of its parts, is ruined by politicians. South Africans are team players just like the Boks, but our leadership is the complete antithesis of the Boks’ coaching staff.
The scenes that you was talking about with the blacks supporting the British and Irish Lions during the Apartheid years i had witnessed it first hand. The Lions had win the game in Port Elizabeth at that time. Today it is wonderful to see all the talents from all the different groups that has been jelled into one unit. Yes, in many positions you can find more talented players, but then we miss the point. The Springboks operate as a unit, they respect the coaching team and the coaching team respect the players and togethet they create this bond, one unit, support each other, play for each othet, play for the nation. Lastly, under Eddie Jones most of the Springboks would not have been pick, " they are to old" He miss the point.
Agreed, this is the greatest team of all time. The mere fact that they did not receive even one award shows you how rediculously corrupt world rugby is. Their dream team with just one Springbok? What a f-ing joke!!! I just wonder what more they need to do??!!

Ireland had a great year. All the players in the world 15 also had a great year. Yes, there might be some bias in the selection, but SA got their award on Saturday. As close as this year's world cup was, just as close I think the voting on the team/coach/w15 was this year.
Yeah if the voting stopped before the quarters. "Best Ireland Team ever" could only reach quarters and then they get coach of the year too. In my opinion, if you have the best team from a nation ever and you still only reach the quarters, you have a mediocre coach. @@pjn123

Thank you for great comment on team dynamics. The Bok slogan throughout RWC has been “Stronger Together”. In Jo’burg I saw the clip of Marx and Mapimpi returning to Paris to be welcomed by the team at the hotel. Seemed to me then that no matter how wiped out the guys were after two bruising knock out matches - the return of these two would rev them up and remind them of what they do and who they do it for.
Tv coverage of return home today was unlike anything I have ever seen. Was at at Madiba’s Inauguration in 1994 - this team symbolises the same hope and capacity to succeed.
