  • We’ve confirmed we are bringing an all-electric F-150 to market. Now, we’re showing you the capability you asked for by having it tow more than 1 million pounds.* This is Built Ford Tough.
    *The F-150 battery-electric prototype is towing far beyond any production truck’s published capacity in a one-time short event demonstration. Never tow beyond a vehicle’s towing capacities. Always consult the Owner’s Manual.

    Math is fun! This video shows the importance of rolling resistance coefficients. Ford chose a railway for a reason, CRR of ~0.0015, meaning they only needed a 1,875 lb-force from the truck in order to move the train. If they towed same weight on road tires, which have CRR 10x that of railways (~0.015) it would have taken an 18,750 lb force to move. Far more than the F150 weighs, so it would have sat still. Railway gives the illusion of impossible, when in reality it’s what makes it possible. Neat!
    Edit: Lots of comments about the tow strap, it actually doesn't need to be rated all that high (see math above, 2,000 lbs will do).

      Engineering Explained My question is about stopping all that weight. Did they have to apply brakes to the rail cars or will the friction be enough?

      yeah good point too.....the tensile strength on that cable would have to exceed over 1.25 million lbs-force, which for that cross sectional area is probably more than carbon fiber lol...which means that they either lied, or they manipulated their test to make it seem much harder than it was

    Others have commented on the low rolling resistance of steel wheels on a steel track. I would also add that electric motors are most similar to steam engines in one respect. They both develop maximum torque at zero RPM. That is how Tesla gets insane acceleration from their electric cars.

    Its less impressive when you realize you could pull that with almost any vehicle. As an engineer for the railway I can tell you, you can push rail cars on flat track by hand, the railway is simply that efficient. That said if ford released an electric f150, and kept the same design with good range, that would be a proper electric truck, and certainly worth a look.

      I wonder if the Ford and VW joint venture exists to help each other ramp up battery production? Will be interesting to see if either of those two companies start to break ground on new giga-factories. That's the key and the biggest competitive advantage Tesla has at the moment. If anything Tesla has shown that after working out the kinks from one giga-factory build-out you can rapidly get another one constructed.

    For those who would like to know.
    the tow-strap is a standard railroad car strap. Each car mover is about 30 tons.
    The neat trick was they got it all moving, not how far it went. They was on flat ground, MOST RR cars will move fairly easy after they get started :)
    Last thought, How did they get it all stopped? The truck sure as heck didn't stop it. Best guess, they " bottled the air " on the cars ( made sure the brakes would stay released), then used a E.O.T. to put the cars in emergency. How do I know all this, I am a RR Conductor :)
    I am not sure I would give up my 2015 F-150 , but that was a cool demo.

    •  4 года назад

      I'm not an electric guy but once cars can get 500+ miles of range on a charge I'll feel comfortable going long distance here in the US.

    • @ikani1
      @ikani1 4 года назад

      Honestly, range isn't an issue in any electric these days. The tiniest cars now have 150-250 mile ranges, most regular car sized ones have 200-350, and any truck sized frame has plenty of battery space. So I'd guess this comes out with at least 400-500 mile range, maybe more. And for longer drives, the public charging infrastructure has really matured and filled out. Plenty more to do of course. But fast charging will give my car about 200 miles in 10-15 minutes, which is just about right for a driving break. :)

    • @Pwnzistor
      @Pwnzistor 4 года назад

      You don't need a heavy tow strap when you're towing across rails. And you don't need a truck that can pull 1million pounds when you're pulling something across rails.

  • @1Uriahheep1

    I can understand that a normal tow strap could pull the load because you're not applying a million pounds to the strap. The real question is: how did they stop the cars once they got going? Don't tell me that they used the F-150's brakes.
