- We’ve confirmed we are bringing an all-electric F-150 to market. Now, we’re showing you the capability you asked for by having it tow more than 1 million pounds.* This is Built Ford Tough.
*The F-150 battery-electric prototype is towing far beyond any production truck’s published capacity in a one-time short event demonstration. Never tow beyond a vehicle’s towing capacities. Always consult the Owner’s Manual.

All-Electric F-150 Prototype: Tows 1M+ Pounds | F-150 | Ford

Math is fun! This video shows the importance of rolling resistance coefficients. Ford chose a railway for a reason, CRR of ~0.0015, meaning they only needed a 1,875 lb-force from the truck in order to move the train. If they towed same weight on road tires, which have CRR 10x that of railways (~0.015) it would have taken an 18,750 lb force to move. Far more than the F150 weighs, so it would have sat still. Railway gives the illusion of impossible, when in reality it’s what makes it possible. Neat!
Edit: Lots of comments about the tow strap, it actually doesn't need to be rated all that high (see math above, 2,000 lbs will do).
Engineering Explained My question is about stopping all that weight. Did they have to apply brakes to the rail cars or will the friction be enough?
Cool to see you commenting here, Jason.
I'd like to see you do a video on this one.
Thank you, I was really hoping you were going to see this video!! BTW keep up the amazing work with you channel.
Engineering Explained thank you for the greater understanding!
Engineering Explained it was still very impressive
That must be the highest rated tow strap in existence
WAAAAAM39 almost makes it unbelievable
Definitely wasn't that heavy of else it would have been a chain for a tow strap.
I tried finding one, they don't exist. I'm questioning the authenticity of this myself now.
probably spent more money on that than they used to develop this truck
yeah good point too.....the tensile strength on that cable would have to exceed over 1.25 million lbs-force, which for that cross sectional area is probably more than carbon fiber lol...which means that they either lied, or they manipulated their test to make it seem much harder than it was
Those new trucks look good and all. But the real beauty was that old truck looking factory new. Man I love those square body fords.
Agreed
Me, my mom, brother, and step dad all own F150s. Mom works at Dearborn truck. I'm the Admin of a Texas based F150 club. Very proud owners
Tesla: Our truck will tow 300k
Ford: Hold my battery pack
lol. will have to see if that 300k is operational towing capacity.
but how ever you put it it's dam impressive ^^
LOL. You can move a rail car on a straight line with your bare hands. There is almost no friction.
Trains move really well on rails. Wouldn't budge if it was on tires.
Tesla: we have secured enough battery supply for our fleet. Ford: uhhh.. do we need to do that?
If you look into it, it really doesn't take that much force to get railcars rolling at slow speeds like that. If those were on rubber tires, forget about it.
The real hero here is that tow-strap :|
Seriously though, awesome exercise guys :D
There is no way that tow strap could handle a load of what they claimed.
It is a kinetic energy strap for sure. Watch it stretch when they tow over 1 million pounds.
Yes, I was planing to say that too. LOL
The true MVP
Yep! What is that thing made out of, Superman's hair?
can that tow strap be thrown in, with the f-150?
But the truck is moving a million pounds on rails...... it would take under 2000lbs of force to do this... This is classic marketing..
shaymo mitchell That’ll be a extra $10999
Gonna be the nitpicker here: they are towing ***on rails***! Quite different friction than on wheels.
When's the last time you saw a train on wheels? :P
Yup The surface tension is very low.
Andrea Zanni right, but it was still impressive
Andrea Zanni we are aware considering that they video was taking in a rail yard
Exactly lol
I admire the promotion of electric vehicles while still maintaining the same designs and spirit towards the brand. Great job Ford!
By the time this thing is on the road you won't recognize it LOL this truck is over a decade away from being in production technology is already there but the cost isn't
I feel the same as you stated. I might be more drawn to this truck, even though e.v., due to traditional design.
I wanna know where to buy that tow strap.
will cost you 1 billion dollars LOL
Train R us 😆
Wakanda
Military equipment off eBay look up m88 tow cables lol
You get one free with every 1,000,000lb freight train you buy
Chevy next year will be like ”our first to the market, JD Power award-winning electric truck!” 😂
Nobody:
Literally over half the comments: The tow strap
It's because it's a lie. No tow strap can withstand 1 million pounds of force.
It's either a lie or the best most expensive industrial tow strap in history.
KingXDeus 1123 is this a lie, most likely. However there are actually “tow” straps that are used by stuff like cranes and heavy equipment transport.
An I defending the authenticity of the 1,000,000 tons, no not at.
KingXDeus 1123 the strap doesn’t have to withstand a million pounds of force. It doesn’t take nearly that to tow a million pounds sideways on wheels.
King, there was never 1 million pounds of force on the tow strap. That would be on a vertical lift. It take a lot less to move 1 million lbs on a rail.
They make Hemp/Spectra lines & straps that can tow oil tankers.
given on level track with no load, 2 to 3 people people can push one of those auto racks, its not that impressive. It shows that rail is the most efficient form of transportation due to low coefficient of friction.
Finally someone with some sense🤣
you have to wonder how many days did they take prepping those rail cars, greasing everything, making sure every wheel spun super free. polishing the rails so no dust was on it etc
You drive a Chevy don’t you
1 man and a boxcar mover can go a long ways
CRengineer17 pretty much it’s like wet soap sliding across a smooth marble floor
Railcar rolling friction 0.001 x 1,000,000 = 1,000 lbs (one thousand pounds) of force to pull it on a straight, level track. Is that so amazing?
Its on wheels.... I'd like the company's to show me there products towing something with out wheels, that'd be impressive
James Hundley EXTREMELY
This truck truly could pull a million pounds.
I bet they tow it down hill
James Hundley I was thinking the same thing. I can push a 50 ton car by hand on a flat rail
Put it on a 1% grade and see how far it goes.
johnnymccity further than your Prius could ever dream of
.5% is more than enough
0,00010 grade and see how far it goes
johnnymccity tell them please , why do trains sometimes have 6 motor cars
I know this seems impressive and all but the Guinness World Record for heaviest pull done by a Human being, is a 400.000+ pounds plane for 28 feet, almost 10 meters.
His name is Kevin Fast and he pulled a CC-177 Globemaster III in September 2009. So yeah I'm really not impressed when a truck then pulls just about double that xD
I'm a Tesla guy, and I'm very happy to see some real competition start to step up. Let's get these trucks made in quantity.
Can't wait for the 4-way EV truck test in the magazines: Ford vs Tesla vs Rivian vs Bollinger.
Competition....... Bahahahahahahahahahahaha
I love Tesla, but my car is an i3, because it's much much cheaper than the cheapest Tesla.
Maybe one day, I'll have one 🤔
That was always the goal
I'd take quality over quantity at this point. I've seen too much quantity over quality.
I want to see what a regular f150 would do.
ECOBOOST would pull it just like the electric truck in my opinion. I'm skeptical of this video, that tow strap seemed kinda small for that amount of weight.
Probably about the same...
Having seen people in tughman competitions drag train cars with their teeth, I'm sure a standard F-150 would pull it also.
Hey I seen a Ecoboost pull a rig at tractor races
I bet any of the guys trucks would pull the same..
People who dont understand simple physics, won't know that any truck can do this.
Texas Draped exactly. All of these comments have caused me to lose all hope in humanity.
thinking a Subaru Forester could do it
Texas Draped then do it and show us
Texas Draped I want to see the physics of this same set up going up .5% of grade
So true let my old Pappy still me boy I can gear a bullfrog the pull a freight train
Give me 400 miles per 10 minute charge and at $40k, then I'm in.
thank you tesla for forcing this hand, I want my reasonably priced electric pickup
I WISH Fords were reasonably priced. Have you checked the price of a new F150??
jetstream01 how much does it cost in your country?
jetstream01 I was thinking the same thing
What do u mean fords are cheap
Tesla and Ford are partnered together on these anyways
The safety vest got me excited about being safe! 🙃
The man resting his arm on the bed wasn't liking it when he heard there it was all-electric.
True!😂
Ford, to continue this you must include such a tow strap with every sold electric F-150!
King, there was never 1 million pounds of force on the tow strap. That would be on a vertical lift. It take a lot less to move 1 million lbs on a rail.
Sure thing boss it's a $40 strap out of any truck stop they'll gladly sell you for $100 :P
You don't need a heavy tow strap when you're towing across rails.
2000lb pound strap can be found everywhere
Bought a 2012 Ford F150 XLT Crew cab 3 months ago... This truck is my first Ford vehicle out of 24 cars I've been through, and I have to say is not even top trim level and yet I actually enjoy everything about this truck!
I can't look at Chevy the same way anymore... I'm converted and it didn't take much to see how much better the Ford is after I stopped listening to the haters and tried it on my own.
I'm definitely all in for electric pickup truck. Ford has won me over and I will elaborate on the reasons why Ford has taken me away from being a Chevy guy for anyone that asks. I'm rooting for you #Ford
I was a Chevy guy based on my experience with a 68 c20, 74 c20, and 1993 k10. But anything after 1998 I prefer the Ford. That's why there are 2 Ford trucks in my drive and a ford car in the garage though I keep the Chevys. The all electric ford F series will be the very first new vehicle I ever buy.
Amazing...how far can it pull a 7000lb trailer?
Yes
45 seconds
150 miles on a mild day.
Paul Arscott around 120 miles
~100 m?
Others have commented on the low rolling resistance of steel wheels on a steel track. I would also add that electric motors are most similar to steam engines in one respect. They both develop maximum torque at zero RPM. That is how Tesla gets insane acceleration from their electric cars.
Huh it’s a physics thing...and a marketing thing, cute though.
@Fleetleader101 Then why not do it with a diesel as well? There's nothing to compare it to.
Everyone: omg that tow strap must be the strongest tow strap around.
Engineering Explained: Actually that’s only a 2 thousand pound strap. 😅
Nice marketing video but my question is how long will I be able to tow my 6500 travel trailer around the Colorado Rockies and how long will it take to recharge it?
Its less impressive when you realize you could pull that with almost any vehicle. As an engineer for the railway I can tell you, you can push rail cars on flat track by hand, the railway is simply that efficient. That said if ford released an electric f150, and kept the same design with good range, that would be a proper electric truck, and certainly worth a look.
So what the train is 1M pounds if the rolling resistance is low. I want to see force measurement on the tow strap to see what is the towing force.
its the same force it took to move the train so about 1000 pounds
As a Telsa owner, I am happy to see this announcement! Now let's hope that they actually produce these in mass market, and help the EV Revolution
Where can I buy a Telsa?
No soon enough because they are making hybrids first before the all Electric version. Ford dragging there feet yet again. Ford needs to go all in on All Electric right away.
I wonder if the Ford and VW joint venture exists to help each other ramp up battery production? Will be interesting to see if either of those two companies start to break ground on new giga-factories. That's the key and the biggest competitive advantage Tesla has at the moment. If anything Tesla has shown that after working out the kinks from one giga-factory build-out you can rapidly get another one constructed.
just gotta keep an eye out in 2021
Screw electric cars I'll keep my big ol v8 sounds better to
Pretty cool. Glad electric vehicles from the big brands are coming.
Not soon enough. There dragging there feet by releasing hybrids first 🙄 not doing it for the planet. If Ford was trying to do it for the planet they wouldn't release a hybrid and go All Electric like they showed in this prototype in this video.
Don't ever buy a Hybrid. Go all Electric.
they are Coming , but NONE can even stand up to a TESLA 2013 Model S.
Only from Rivian. They dont want you to know that their drivetrain displayed in the video was made by Robert Scaringe and more
wow u must really hate the environment
Don’t forget the Chevy Volt.
For those who would like to know.
the tow-strap is a standard railroad car strap. Each car mover is about 30 tons.
The neat trick was they got it all moving, not how far it went. They was on flat ground, MOST RR cars will move fairly easy after they get started :)
Last thought, How did they get it all stopped? The truck sure as heck didn't stop it. Best guess, they " bottled the air " on the cars ( made sure the brakes would stay released), then used a E.O.T. to put the cars in emergency. How do I know all this, I am a RR Conductor :)
I am not sure I would give up my 2015 F-150 , but that was a cool demo.
Now hook it up to a regular F150, and do the same thing, just to make it interesting.
Absolutely incredible. Going electric unlocks so much potential
Like what?
Couldn't agree more, Alex!
Electric is the future. Just need to get the distance improved and it'll be awesome. Cool to see Ford starting now instead of later.
I'm not an electric guy but once cars can get 500+ miles of range on a charge I'll feel comfortable going long distance here in the US.
Honestly, range isn't an issue in any electric these days. The tiniest cars now have 150-250 mile ranges, most regular car sized ones have 200-350, and any truck sized frame has plenty of battery space. So I'd guess this comes out with at least 400-500 mile range, maybe more. And for longer drives, the public charging infrastructure has really matured and filled out. Plenty more to do of course. But fast charging will give my car about 200 miles in 10-15 minutes, which is just about right for a driving break. :)
Ford could've started making electric cars in the 1900s you dwit.
If electric is the future we're gonna need to update the electric grid. There is no incentive for electric companies to spend that kind of money without a return
An electric truck that can pull 1.2 million pounds, $70,000+, cost of 42 F150's $1.7 million, unbreakable tow strap PRICELESS!
You don't need a heavy tow strap when you're towing across rails. And you don't need a truck that can pull 1million pounds when you're pulling something across rails.
I can understand that a normal tow strap could pull the load because you're not applying a million pounds to the strap. The real question is: how did they stop the cars once they got going? Don't tell me that they used the F-150's brakes.
1Uriahheep1 handbrake on cars
That's what I was wondering XDXD
since you don't see the train crashing into the back of the truck they probably used the rail cars' brakes.
hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! Part#2 the brakes stop trains.
Its staged
I like Ford, though these sort of videos are sorta cringe inducing.
Good they are doing the hybrid thing though. Looking forward to that.
Two Asians test America's best selling truck 4:59
Brilliant! Now tow the same weight on road tyres
I'm impressed by how that tow strap held up to that kind of weight. I need one of those things 🤣
I have been wanting an electric truck since I 1st saw the VIA motors truck on Jay Lenos garage. It had an electric motor with a V6 gas engine on board to charge the batteries...just like a diesel electric train. It got over 100 mpg.
More of a dodge guy myself but very glad to see ford is making progress toward all electric truck... can’t wait to see when it’s not a prototype
Charles Astuto Cant wait till the Ram Electric
This is the most profound moment for electric vehicle adoption. Watching this video makes my heart race. I am full of joy and excitement. Thank you Ford. please bring it to dealerships. I cannot wait to try it. All these pick up truck people can be truly independent by having Solar make your own energy. drive your own truck. be truly independent. This is a huge moment in history.
They should DEFINITELY revive the Ford Lighting as the all-electric version of the F-150!!!
It's called the F 150 Nitemare now look it up it's a badass truck
I been waiting for is big news to drop, I heard about is a few years back because the f-150 that caught on fire in Death Valley California. I told my coworker and family about it but they laughing at me saying " Ford won't go electric in the F-150".
at this towing capacity who can blame them
Your family was right Ford isn't going to go to electric they're going to die out way before that this is just a publicity stunt that truck is never going to for sale Ford has a hard time with the vehicle they created the combustion engine they can't even get that right don't expect Ford to make anything in the electric category worth Wild
An electric car is just as much if not more of a fire hazard than a normal gas one
That’s what people said about making the F150 aluminum. 😂
her being an engineer knows this isn't impressive lol
I didn’t think it could be done. But Ford just made an electric truck that’s actually awesome!!!!! Kudos Ford.
That's why Ford is Ford, no one can beat it !
Skip the hybrid and go straight to all electric and become a leader in the industry
The truck is all electric.....
Considering that it really only took about 2000lbs of Force to do that, my 2000 Ranger with a stick and a 3.0l V6 could achieve the same results.
That’s a GEN-Y Hitch😱 Now THAT’S built tough!!
Why did it still have an "engine" start stop button?
Because you still have to power up the electronics.
Wow!! That's impressive!!! 😲
Awesome electric F-150
Awesome to show how an all electric vehicle is just as capable as the gas powered. Usually electric vehicles are cars talking about road performance, but I’ve never thought about the off road and industrial capabilities until now. Got my approval.
Ford you have done it again.
Born in Michigan Ford trucks till I die.
5:00 I think they missed the high five 😂
Ford is finally onboard to the future. Congrats an electric f150 would be badass
Sam Richards I agree.
I like the old trucks meeting their newer generations, like a passing of hands, yet the old trucks still prove they got more power under the hood
So, this is where the F-150 lighting⚡ idea💡 starts!! Cool man!!!
Rivian sure knows how to build an electric truck...
It can't come soon enough. Very excited about this!
Ford is dragging there feet on this all Electric Ford F-150 because there making a hybrid first. They should be helping save the planet sooner by going in All Electric right away. There's plenty of hybrids proven that's not the way to go. All Electric is what we need.
Love your excitement, Clint!
Forget about competition, can we just appreciate the technology and engineering that goes into such amazing cars.
The real MVP is that towing strap!
Yet somehow that 10k tow strap doesn’t break 😂
If you make it, I will buy it.
That'll be a hundred and fifty thousand will that be cash or card? wait did you think this truck was going to be 50 Grand LOL you can't even get the battery pack for that
Ford developers: Tow strap or battery?
Ford: Yes
Well done Ford these are some very exciting times!!!
We couldn't agree more!
It would really be something if it could stop all that weight too.
FINALLY! Now make a million of those trucks!
I grew up a GM fan and now I'm a Ford sharefolder, small one but still a shareholder. Go Ford!
Outstanding machine, I can't wait till they are available! I'm going to start my own railroad.
Since all they needed was a regular tow strap...1M pounds of weight total, yes..., but on wheels its probably only a couple thousand at most.
Everyone hates Tesla, but when Ford does it it’s WOAHHH OMG... thanks Tesla for your hard work and keeping persistent, but also thank you ford for caring.
I don't hate Tesla. I just hate the smug owners.
Who hates tesla? lol
That Tow Strap going down in history!!!!
Oh hell yeah. I cant wait to see this truck on the market
the safety glasses tho 🤓🤓🤓
Impressive but it’s not towing 1m lbs, it’s pulling you ford should probably correct that in the video title
D L it’s just like Toyota did with their towing the space shuttle commercials
Exactly. Get that load up to highest speeds.
Tow straps used for all heavy lifts in rigging, except it's called a sling. Great video, future is 100 yrs in the making, keeping an electric motor cool under a steady load is the design here.
FINALLY!!! I'll swap my 2015 f150 in for this as soon as it's on the market.
No wonders why petrol cars would be like flip phones one day..
This is awesome.
О мой Бог , это же чудо компания Форд вы лучшие !!! мы уже такой хотим!!! когда в России можно купить эту красивую малышку???
Oh my God, it's a miracle.
Ford you are the best !!!
Super!!! That's what we want!!! When in Russia we can buy this ????? Looking forward to buying this car :)))))))
I have only ever bought vehicles from the Japanese automakers (Specifically Mazda, Toyota and Honda) but this made me respect what Ford has in the works. What is that truck frame and tow strap made of? Carbon Fiber? This was so impressive. Bring in the Electric Era of Ford!
I’m impressed but I’m scratching my head wondering where all this clean electricity is supposed to come from when all these electric vehicles truly start to dominate the automobile market.
Solar? Wind? Water? Wave? Fusion?
Coal and Natural Gas . . . and the Lithium in the batteries child slave labor in Africa overseen by the Chinese.
Sure, electric cars are going to be essentially coal powered, but electric cars are more efficient, and newer cleaner coal power plants mean electric cars pollute less per mile than gasoline. (Clean coal isn't really a practical future, but a fine stepping stone).
greg smith windmills maybe. Nuclear is the only thing that makes sense.
greg smith Clean coal 😀
Guy: "you seem confident but I'll be shocked"
Seems like the Ford guys don't have that much faith in their trucks after all
Well done Ford....see what inspiration can do? That tow strap though....
MURICA!!!!!!
Definitely the coolest concept truck in a long time.
No other truck can’t touch the Ford F-150!💪🏽
F-150 forever!!!!
So you're saying every truck can touch it? Cause you said can't
Yep no other truck besides the Silverado 1500 or the Dodge ram or the Toyota tundra I mean they can but yeah no other truck can
Well, any truck that's more reliable, like a gm..
Youd be surprised
Yes the new electric model was impressive in the video, but no one is asking the real question...
What the hell was that interaction at 0:49
I grew up with Ford trucks all my life and I’m not a fan of electric vehicles but OMG 😱😱😱😱
So proud, let's save this planet Ford!
I want one of those straps!
They don't exist
You don't need a heavy tow strap when you're towing across rails.
LOVE MY F150
I have tears of joy....hell ya....go FORD..!!!
Glad to see Ford working hard on All-Electric vehicles especially since I sell Ford.
