- (Update: OMG everyone this video is BLOWING up! Thanks for watching!!!) I'm calling this no sew, because the stitches Oogie has don't require a true sewing skill :P (You can use a safety pin for the headband!) Nightmare Before Christmas Oogie Boogie Costume Tutorial! No Sew Halloween Costume! This is my favorite Holiday Season movie and I'm super proud of myself so share away friends!
MATERIALS:
A cheap Mask with a lot of surface to work with
Cardboard
Hot Glue
Scissors
Crayola Model Magic (Edit: About 1 and a half 8oz packs if I remember correctly)
Black Tulle (you don't need much, just enough to cover the eyes)
Black Felt (just enough to cover the mouth)
Brown Felt (Head cover and for belly pockets. Maybe 2 yards. I bought from the clearance section:P)
Thick Elastic for a headband
Safety Pin
Tape Measure
Jute or Burlap Fabric (I ordered from fabric.com about 8 yards, had a bit extra)
Sharpie
Stuffing (You can use leftover grocery bags if you wanted!)
Black Jute Cord or Yarn
Needle for thick cords/string (Or you can hot glue the string to a toothpick. It will fit through the holes in the jute. I had to glue the string to my needle since I didn't have a big one!)
Velcro
Optional: Brown Paint

I'm starting to think that Crayola changed their formula since I made mine since so many people are having issues with it. If anybody has an idea for a similar clay, comment it below! (This clay is super light and dries more like a light rubber ball which made it perfect for a mask. Also, if anybody knows, does vaseline help prevent it from sticking to the cardboard? I didn't have this problem, but others are)
I noticed that the humidity in your home really matters. It wasn't dry after 3 days of letting it sit, so I took it to my office at work where it is much drier, and it was dry by noon. Also, after the outside of the mask was dry, I placed the mask back into the mold to allow the inside to dry. The only breakage we had was around the lips and eye sockets, possibly because I didn't make it thick enough? But masking tape really did the trick to make everything right. Maybe lining the cardboard with masking tape or regular tape would prevent stickage?
I added a plastic bag over the mask and cardboard because originally it wasn’t coming off and was sticking after a week. So I took it out as best I could and added the plastic bag and reshaped it.
It took about a week for mine to dry but it did, I took it out some days too to let it dry under the sun
My mask took about a week to fully dry(Crayola model magic), I even brushed a layer of gorilla glue over it to ensure it wouldn't break/fall apart. Looks good now!
La hice con foamy moldeable y quedó muy bien!, secó rapidísimo... Sorry but I dont speak english
I'd be tempted to put a few wormy guys just picking out the seams
Amy Vintage my bugssss my bugssss...
you can buy plastic bugs at a toy store and mold them in coloured hot glue (if you don't wanna work with latex) make a mold out of sculpy and fill with hot glue. and maybe a couple of hidden pockets with gummy worms.
djeeno he didn’t ask how to get them
@@teddybundy2084 I know. however buying a whole lot of fake bugs would probably be quite expensive and this is a DIY project already I felt it appropriate to give an example of how to create them oneself.
I was thinking about a spider hanging from the tip on his head.

Oogie boogie is missing just one more detail.... BUGS!!!
Oh yeah! Some bugs crawling around and coming out of the seams would really set it off!
Whoa! You had a Halloween wedding?! That is sick!
Yeah we snuck in a cemetery and got married. We met around Halloween time so to keep the anniversary we decided to have a Halloween wedding.
I was thinking about it, maybe you could sew some boondogglse, or very thick wool out of the fake sewings, to make it look like caterpillars or larvae crawling out of the sack...
Or spiders coming out your eyes and snakes out your mouth!
imagine being at a party and oggie boogie is twerking
Lol you made my day
that would be pathetic, because twerking is pathetic.

I am in the process of making and Oogie Boogie costume and I have to say this is the BEST tutorial on youtube for this!
Thank you!!
I used your tutorial last year and I will say it was the best Halloween costume I’ve ever had!!
🎃 Ah yes... I am in the Halloween spirit in september🎃
I’ve been in it since mid July!! That’s when I decorated my house!! As soon as hobby lobby starts putting the fall stuff out I can’t take it. Now all I need is our weather here in Oklahoma to stop being so dang hot and humid. It’s still getting up into the low to mid 90’s. I’m sick of it.

This is really cool! I'd be tempted to spray the whole thing with some glow in the dark paint as well after finishing so it glows in black light.

This is literally the EXACT TUTORIAL I needed this year.
I knew I wanted to do model magic clay for the mask but didn’t know how.
Now I do.

You should add bugs to the eyes and mouth, small but great details

I’m making this for my S1 halloween costume this year and I’ve started preparing the tulle and made the mask thanks so much for this tutorial 🎃🍂
My husband and I just got done making this following this wonderful tutorial. AMAZING results! A few humble tips:
- for the mask, the model magic clay held up pretty well, but had a few weak areas that we were able to reinforce well with masking tape and hot glue.
- we put the burlap over the mask before we put in the tulle for the eyes and the felt for the mouth and found this to be easier. 4-5 layers of tulle should be enough.
- we found jute-colored paint to fill in the leftover white areas around the eyes and mouth that you'll probably have too.
- like she suggests, safety pins do great holding the elastic headband on if you don't know how to sew.
- depending on the burlap you use, you may need to double up the layers for the entire costume like we did because of the transparency of the burlap available to us. Not a huge issue with hot gluing layers together. The legs only needed the one layer, though.
- we used a golf ball to weigh down the cone of his head because the cotton stuffing wasn't doing the trick.
- when cutting out the body, give yourself A LOT of room around your chest and shoulders or else your costume will be much too tight.
- we cut small inconspicuous slits into the hands so that my husband had the option to use his thumbs to hold drinks, then hide them away afterwards. We also added in a tiny hole to the mouth so that he could use drinking staws.
- instead of securing the legs with string around the upper legs, we just got an old pair of my husband's gym shorts (ones with a drawstring) and hot glued them to those to make "pants." Much more secure. He's going to be walking in this thing a lot!
- we finally gave up on the velcro on the shoulders and just did a zipper on the back and glued the shoulders up. With 2 layers of burlap on the front and back, the velcro wasn't strong enough.
John Mendenhall Thank you! i was looking for something like this

Boogie in the moon is most likely going to be my first tattoo. Love Nightmare Before Christmas
I would put all types of bugs and spiders and stuff like crawling from his mouth and the seams
Omg I'm so broke, but wanna do that so badddddd, I love oogie boogie.
Edit: okay, so, I'm 16, and jobless, my mom is not in the picture, and my dad is crippled, it's super hard, we can hardly keep up with our electricity bill...it is really hard...so please, I understand that you think it's me being lazy, but I promise you, it's not. Also, thank you for all the likes!!! It means alot to me!!!
If you download the hobby lobby, Michael's, or Joannes app you can get coupons. Ik hobby lobby has a 40% off one thing which IS applicable on fabric 💖
i dont think it would be too expensive!!
Maybe 40 dollars? all the expense would go into the fabric and the clay and the stuffing, you can find everything else at the dollar store.
Well, it's not specially expensive to make. It's not because it's great looking and some works, that it's specially means it expensive
You can get the jute cord, tule, halloween mask, sewing needles, and paint for pretty cheap at walmart/ the dollar store. You might be able to get the burlap for pretty cheap and they have generic clay at craftstores for 10 dollars for a 10 lb box (you can use a coupon to make it 6 if you go to hobby lobby). If you know any stores that get shipments in burlap bags you can ask them for those. I got some from a guy that sells cacao beans. All in all this costume cost me personally 20 dollars and 20 hours lol
I went and had a look at the Joann's fabric site since I want to make this as well- their burlap is 4 dollars a yard and you'd probably need 6 yards so $24. But if you get their coupon for 40% off, (it's here: www.joann.com/coupon/ ) that's only about 15 bucks so really, not too bad. If you have other fabric stores nearby you might be able to find it for even cheaper. My local Walmart has it for 3 bucks per yard so it might be worth it to shop around. Good luck. :)
Doing this for sure! Now I need to convince my daughter to dress up as Shock. This Halloween is going to be EPIC!
One major change I did was leave the bottom open. This allows for less restrictive leg movement, but more importantly, it allows me the ability to put the costume on like a dress. That is, over my heat, I stead of stepping into it. This is much easier to get in and out of. My Oogie is very chunky, so the open bottom doesn't look any different when left open than when it's sealed.
You could also try using black tights/pantyhose for the eyes and mouth. Easy to see through and breathable 🙂
Smart.😎 Good Idea. 🧠
Thanks, that works really well.
OMG!!! I just wasted 2 hours of my Saturday morning looking for DIY oogie boogie customs, then giving up and looking for ready made pricey customs to buy..... when I bumped into your AMAZING video giving out details on how to make it yourself! Your costume is absolutely fantastic looking and your instructions are sooo simple and practical! DEFINITELY the BEST DIY video on the subject. Thanks sooo much for sharing it. And yes, I agree with others in this forum: You are a GENIUS!!!
🥰😁
Im so in love with your costume, I’m going to make Velcro pockets inside my arms and stomach to fit small packs of gummy worms/candybugs for the kids 💕
I saw this last year and decided to do it this year. I'm halfways through and so far it's going well! I'm excited!😍
I just bought the supplies right now to make this thx
AG TV. How much was the total?
@@homefrynick6688 It should be fairly cheap. Most of this stuff can be bought at a dollar store. The fabric will be the most expensive, but burlap isn't that spendy of fabric either. Not compared to others.
I need to know where to buy the brown fabric for the body! Please! I really want to make this! And the filt for the eyes and mouth!
@@albertoguerra3995 If you have a fabric store near you, look for burlap. That is the type of fabric you really want to get for this. Walmart might have some? Or you can get it online i'm sure. Burlap is fairly cheap, so you won't spend a fortune for it.
You could also use this to make an Oogie Boogie bean bag if you add another bag inside with a reinforced seam :)
This is absolutely amazing. Better than any of the oogie costumes you can buy for sure!
Thanks so much! Followed this with some light modifications and it worked out great, even for a novice/beginner crafter like myself.
Brain Hull needs to wear this and run around using his Oogie Boogie voice!!! 😂😂😂
Hell yeah haha
Omg, he would be awesome as Oogie Boogie. He should go to Shanghai Disney too.
