- I’m really excited to share a video that takes you behind the scenes of how we plan the farm. It is truly a window into our unconventional process and is my favorite video to date!
Even though I’ve been creating a farm plan for nearly 20 years now, I always find this activity to be quite daunting. It’s a delicate balance between dreaming big and also trying to be as realistic as possible about our many limitations.
Because Jill and I are visual learners, pictures, paper, and writing things out make sense to our brains. And while we’re often told it’s not the most “efficient” way to plan, it really works for us.
This year Chris captured the months-long process on camera so that we could share it with you.

Erik, the triangle screen is for RoseHips seeds.the Rose Hip seeds are triangle in shape.
It is so validating to hear Erin say that the planning is like going into a cave! That is exactly how I feel. Terrified that I will bite off more than I can manage but going excitedly ahead anyway. Mistakes are made and knowledge gained. It is quite a lovely dance indeed.

I don’t have a farm, just an area for cut flowers but I love this. It’s applicable to whatever we all do in life. The fact that your life goal is to make sure you give all of us the info to do it ourselves is the best kind of legacy. Now I need Grams Crabapple trees.
This video is SO GOOD on so many levels!! The genuineness of visionaries flirting with madness while acknowledging the importance of pencil sharpeners and extra sticky post-it notes. I always feel like a failure when I decide to move some things around AGAIN but you made me realize that it’s a work in progress and that’s ok. Plans will change as I continue to learn and grow. 🌸

Absolutely fabulous! Your team is wonderful and it shows how much everyone loves what they are doing.
You two are so funny. And so relatable!!!! Do you ever feel like you always cram way more into a space when thinking about it in your head vs. the actual space in reality? I struggle with this, and my husband is always the voice of logic and reason! I'm like a kid at a dessert buffet whose eyes are bigger than her stomach!

I had to laugh at the end with the "chewing your leg/or Jill's leg off to get out of the cave comment." So how I'm feeling right now. Fall is busy around the farm, but spring is gangbusters on steriods, and I always feel like I'm playing catch up and just skidding through by the skin of my teeth....and thanking my lucky stars for the decisioins that panned out and don't make more work for me. Greateful for you that you have a good team, especially Jill. I need a Jill, just can't afford one yet 🤣

I love Jill's painting analogy. And if you ever decide to try oil painting, in the beginning, it often feels like Erin's analogy of going into a cave! You wonder what the heck you got yourself into, and if you'll ever find a way out! But with painting, you have to think like Jill, trust in the process and everything usually works out:). I really loved this video. 😄 I especially love that the two of you are planners, but with a side of chaos. I relate so hard. I have to have a plan, or at least an outline, but it's going to involve a lot of scribbles and scratches (and potato chip crumbs).

You all have such a special rapport with each other. No wonder you are successful, and your videos are the best. I am happy to report my Unicorn Zinnia, Alpenglow Dahlia and celosia seedlings are all going gangbusters. They are my backyard farm plan for now.
