  • My personal project recreating the model, animations, and effects from this Arm Cannon concept that went unused in Metroid Prime 3.

    Everything was done by myself using a combination of Maya, Substance Painter & Designer, Affinity Photo and Designer, and the Unity Engine.

    I _love_ how the shape the barrel parts take for each beam almost instinctively tells you how the beam fire is shaped. Wave beam is wide and swirling, Ice beam's angles tells that it fires ice is like a shotgun, and Plasma looks like a volcano firing a stream of lava.

    The idea of the ice beam being like a shotgun when charged is so awesome
    P.S. why in the world was the charge shot on the wave beam also not like this in Prime???? It seems so obvious

    WOW! These animations are so good! I understand why the developers went the way they did, but all the pieces of the arm cannon changing shape and the way the arm cannon simply "feels" like its charging up is dramatic and awesome! Here's to hoping Beyond will be more creative with the way the beam changes shape.
    On another note, I wish Metroid Prime Hunters would get a remake so that way all of different hunter specific beams could be fleshed out with some official animations for Samus's arm cannon. Younger me was never too keen on the idea that just the color would change since all the other prime games had the cannon change shape. I could only imagine that the Omega Cannon would make the arm cannon react like these animations.

    Wave beam is crazy I love how you can see the light reflect on the top of the visor and I like that they all have a characteristic that shapes them like what they are

    This astounding massive project worked many days, or years, or months, showcased in video, making a new Metroid game (probably not or it is but a fanmade) has gone to a whole new level

    Wow, this is actually really dope.
    Some of the ui/hud look similarly to prime 4s trailer, and this was before that was shown. Good stuff

    Wow, that air dash is some next level movement tech. Excellent job on this, for a minute I genuinely thought this was cut MP4 stuff. Even the HUD design is very similar to the trailers. We will see how well this comment ages lol But excellent job on this nonetheless! Genuinely amazing 👏🎮🕹️💯

    Adore the wave beam in totality. The ice beam and plasma beam’s floating metal bits aren’t my jam, but the overall silhouette for them is awesome. Great work.

      I actually struggled to get a silhouette for the ice and plasma beams that I liked. The plasma beam design I pulled directly from the concept art, but I had to make some adjustments to get it to read properly in the first person view. The Ice beam I just made up. I'm pretty happy with them overall, but I agree that the wave beam is the strongest design.

    I know this probably won't happen especially since Nintendo is so up there own ass with IP protection but hot damn I would love to see this become a full fledged fan game, the UI, the amazing arm cannon, that sweet sweet mid air dash its all sooooo clean! You honestly could make a Metroid Prime styled fan game or hell just use what's here and make your own spiritual prime styled game and I bet wave beams to space pirates it would be amazing! Either way though, fantastic work!!

    This is really cool! I've been working on my own Metroid Prime-like project as well but this has the visuals of the arm cannon, beams, and visor done much better. I've been focused more on programming the scan, x-ray, and thermal visors, making various enemy AI, and other abilities. If you by chance ever want to work together on this kind of project I would be down.

    I love the heat waves that are visible above the plasma, it does give it a sense of being very hot

    Instantly recognized the inspiration of the arm cannon and beams from Prime 3 concept art. Very cool to see it come to life ! Nice plushie Metroids too 😄
    Man this just fuels my imagination about Prime 4 even more ... I still hope they go for a more traditional/recognizable and "in line with the previous Prime games" design for the arm cannon and suit.
    Great work on the lighting and materials 👍 It gives me Prime Remastered x Portal vibes !

      Haha I made the plushie Metroids because I wanted something to shoot at but I didn't want to spend too much time on anything other than the Arm Cannon as that was the focus of the project.

    looks great.
    my guess is that - retro studios took it out because, when you hold down the aim button, samus's left hand would clip through those arm cannon modes for wave, ice and plasma beams.

    I noticed you implemented a dash mechanism and used it mid-air, something which I absolutely loved in DOOM Eternal. With Prime trilogy being so focused on jump-strafing it would be so good if we could stay grounded and dash evade in Prime 4. That kind of movement allows for more challenging combat and speed. I feel Prime 4 should crank the combat pace up a bit.
    Your hud reminds me of Prime: Hunter's hud with it being all green and simple, but I love the more varied designs of the beams/cannon.

      Thank you! I did toss a bit of DOOM inspiration in there. With the HUD I wasn't so much thinking of Hunters. (This might be an unpopular opinion but I didn't really care for that game) I was more just thinking it was a weird disconnect that her visor was a different color than the HUD. having them the same color felt more like you were looking through the visor. If I had developed this into a full game, I would have had the HUD change color with the suit upgrades.

      @@humblebee1321 I think that'd be a good little cosmetic feature as well, like in Prime 4 the UI is all bluish, assuming we can relate that to the Power Beam. But it'd be cool to have the UI change color based on the beam or ability being used. Could do a bit of the same with the helmet itself.

    Oh my god, that was fantastic Humblebee. While I'm afraid the cannon plating's positions after shifting in some instances (like for the Plasma Beam) were a little too discordant, that was still very cool. Keep up the great work. :^)

    Also, the shape of the wave beam's cannon reminds me more of like, what a Spazer Beam's cannon would look like due to the width.
    With that in mind, you don't have to limit yourself to 4 beams, we can use 6 or even 8!
    For custom icons being hand gestures, I decided on, uhhh... (using binary for this since it's way easier to do that; in "0 0000" the thumb is the stray zero, then it goes index, middle, ring, pinky. So the default cannon would look like 1 1100)
    Dark beam: 0 1100
    Light beam: 0 0011
    Annihilator beam: 0 1111
    Not sure what other liberties you can take, but it would be cool to see!

    Something about the cannon shapes feels more like Halo than Metroid. I'm kinda glad they changed it despite these designs looking amazing in general.

    I like the cannon design, but I think floating pieces of metal don't belong to Metroid.

    This is really impressive work, my only suggestion would be if the view model was ever so slightly out further on the screen like Samus holds her arm out. Other than that keep going this is awesome ❤

    Thing is that gamecude couldn,t handle that type animation. Remenber correctly the charging weapons make particles elem get all over the arm canon was some kind glitch. Because glitch don,t do anything bad in the game they not fixed vanilla version

    I would like to mention it would be cooler if the ice beam visibly froze when charged (like it does in prime already,) while the plasma beam steamed, burned, or turned red hot while being charged?

      It's not from a full game. It's a personal project of mine made in the Unity game engine.
