Anyone else prefer the UK version of KN? The US version is so obviously scripted and formulaic. The UK restaurants had different problems he had to solve, like poor marketing, portion size and pricing, too much bought-in over seasonal ingredients, rats in the fridge. And Gordon had more of a warmth to him, only yelling when he needed to break down someone's ego. It was far more interesting to watch.
@@verdigo1 I remember hearing about a restaurant where Gordan cleaned his plate, & the only problem was some bookkeeping or something. It's too bad her restaurant closed because she got too old to run it.
@@verdigo1 UK version is better, but the US version works pretty well on youtube. I don't think I could handle the sound effects and editing on a full episode uninterrupted
Solo Levelings character design is mental. Even some random dude in the background wears armour that would be a legendary item in in any other manga. The art is just so good.
Another aspect is they literally show "grinding" not just kill some ogre with meteor shower to show you're the mc. This story can combine grinding aspect and still mantaining the story progress
@@sakatagintoki9322 Can you elaborate? Why wouldn't execution matter for a story? Doesn't how things are executed, tropes for example, help to distinguish anime from one another - and the way these tropes are executed fit to one group of viewers taste affect how successful that story is?
@@adamhayche8412 I think he meant solo leveling isn't the prime example. The biggest issue I have with solo leveling is the fact nobody else can get powerful, around like 160 I think in the manhwa he's already way more powerful than the 2nd most powerful human so you know nobody else can truly help him later except his summons. If other people's mana or something could be increased through training their stamina it would help at least make it feel like he's not completely alone now. Although I will admit I was obsessed with solo leveling when I first read it, but imo overgeared is way better

@@d4s0n282 Here's a trick to not get spoiled by anything anymore, don't search or watch videos related to a story you are currently invested and have not finished in.
What's great about Solo Leveling is that we see him start from the bottom and earn his OP status one step at a time through blood and sweat, unlike Kirito, and unlike almost all other shonen mcs, he does it QUIETLY. He doesn't make speeches about friendship, dreams, and determination, or scream about he'll never forgive the bad guy. He overcomes obstacles with quiet dignity, which is something I just love.
Solo Leveling is good. The first 2/3 is definitely stronger than the conclusion. The weakest element is just how underdeveloped and useless most if not all side characters are compared to the MC.
The conclusion at the moment is so underwhelming do not care about the final villian at all. I've always just read for the fights and the cathartic resolution. But the final fight while it has world ending stakes has no emotional impact making it hard to be invested in anything that happens. I like the manhwa but it shouldn't even be in the top 100 manga on Mal.
"CG SHADOWS" When he said that. I felt it very deep in my existence with a vietnam flashback to all the terrible CGs in the anime for the past decades.
Honestly cant be believe im saying this but i hope a Japanese stduio does not touch this like how Record of rangnork was cheaped on. I would prefer an American studio with a big budget like the guys who did castlevania on netflix.
To me, solo levelling is like the best 'filler content' between the more sophisticated, story-driven reads. Its got its own content and plot but I enjoy it so much more for the top-tier use of the web-comic formatting combined with the art quality.
The thing about solo leveling and most power fantasy manwha is that they are focused purely on the mc and its story. Solo lvling is inoffensive while Japanese isekai purely for fap material
Jeju Island Arc was probably the best arc in the whole series, ofc the final awakening arc was also epic but jeju island had its vibes on a whole different level. The whole feeling of reading this amazing artwork was summarized in this vid, really epic work!
"The rule of cool, on crack" is the most accurate thing to say about Solo Leveling... I love it so much, but it's 100% power fantasy, just done so well due to the sick fucking art, lmao
True, I read the web novel before the manhwas started and enjoyed it, but the manhwa's art truly elevated it to another level. I'd be super excited for each new chapter even though I already knew what was going to happen.
Unlike other Power Fantasy, Sung Jin-Woo earned his power! He trained hard, almost died multiple times and despite his OP power, he still couldn't save everyone! He knows the pain of being weakling and bullied, thus he work hard to become strong.
Also, Solo Leveling was one of my gateway Manhwa's. You guys be careful. Manhwa is a super addicting drug and can lead to several serious conditions such as: - Staying up all night to keep reading - Jumping back to chapter 1 tor reread once you catch up with the current chapter - lead you to going to other Manhwas to once again feel the invigoration of watching some poor mislead character become reborn into a higher level of being who can wipe the floor with anyone
I've been reading Solo Leveling, Tower of God, Omniscient Reader, Your Throne and used to God of High School until it went on a break. Manhwas are addicting.
While the whole side characters cast have a collective personality of a cardboard box 😂. Even MC girl is useless af, bish got glazed as one of the strongest rank S hunter, but got zero feat. Every time she came out, she need to be rescued by the MC, always.
I wonder if that's why the ending seemed so rushed... RIP Dubu. I am so sad to miss out on more beautifully choreographed fight scenes. Thank you for your hard work in creating this beautiful gem. (T^T)ゞ
@Amalthea Kate Nope. ^‿^ But given how well-paced they were able to portray the rest of the story (and the comments of those who did read the light novel) I can't help but wonder if would have been able to better pace the ending of the manhwa if Dubu hadn't been in the process of dying at the time. Especially since the rest of the manhwa had done such a good job of consistently keeping me eager to see the next chapter and that was noticeably less true for the last few chapters.
I found solo leveling which made me find Garnt which made me find trash taste and now I cannot wait for the boys minus possibly Joey to review this on trash taste!
Solo Leveling does not try to be super "New" and "Fresh", it just sticks to what it is and tries to perfect it without trying too much flashy new stuff that doesn't work. Thats what makes it great.
It isn't great. Frankly any show with no side character I can remember being any use isn't great. It is merely above average. Maybe good. But calling it great is an insult to the true greats like One Piece
@@rajsanghvi5664 Your word isn’t law bud. Just because it’s missing something that’s usually important for a good story doesn’t mean it can’t be one. It could be a lot better but I don’t particularly mind watching one guy steamroll all opposition with no help. Stop being weird lol
Reason Solo leveling is world wise phenomenon was that its storylined was not disturbed by harem harabages just a simple yet a beautiful romance story and the character development of a protagonist simply just amazing and moreover the art in this manhwa was out of the world
you're lying if you think the romance is "beautiful". that's one of the weakest shit about this series. make sense bc SL is all about action but damn raise your standard and read SSS class suicide hunter for a real power couple, will you?
I basically won't give Manwha, Manhua, Webcomics, webtoons a chance, but I will admit that is a HUGE advantage. Like seriously, I don't think I've ever had a panel transition in manga be effective because of how awkward it can be. Why are they not ripping this off?
@@alastor8091 Because manga and manhwa are made to very different origin philosophies. Manga was first made in physical media, i.e. paperback books, and therefore the panels obviously have to fit into that format. Whereas manhwa was made for digital media and thus allows for the long scroll format they use. Note that as with all things, the long scroll format's effectiveness is based on the artists working on it, as sometimes manhwa can have entire long pages filled with nothing but white, whereas manga try to make sure that every page has something in it.
@@StrikeNoir105E yeah, but with the rise of online manga sales and whatnot, youd think some authors would give it a shot. It could help a lot with page pacing. Maybe I'm in an atom sized minority when it comes to that problem though. If Korea is gonna rip off the worst parts of manga, manga should rip off the best parts of Korea, or at least do a little something with them you know? At least one guy has got to get the idea to experiment right?
If you like Solo Leveling, I HIGHLY recommend Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint. Both SL and ORV are made by Redice Studio, but have both different yet similar plot points. It’s satisfying to see your protagonist grow through hard work and their own efforts, that brings not always 100% perfect outcomes. Oh, and if you do decide to read, prepare yourself. Mentally.
The weird thing about omniscient reader’s viewpoint is that I read the whole thing, loved it, was blown away by it, yet I don’t have the mental fortitude to re-read it like solo levelling lmao. Solo levelling, omniscient reader’s viewpoint and against the gods are all incredible web novels though
Solo leveling is incredibly mid, at first it was 8/10 at around chapter 100+ its become 5/10 at best. ORV, is great, at first it was an 8/10 now its a 9/10. ORV has a great mc, great supporting characters, great mystery, plot, art, worldbuilding, etc. Solo Leveling has great art, great uhh... great... umm meh "emotionless mc", side "characters" (could honestly take most of them out and still would be the same story), there's no tension.. i just dont get how its *still* popular, at first it *was* amazing, now its so so fucking mid. Just my opinion tho
I HIGHLY AGREE. I adore the light novel and the manwha just makes it even better. I dare say even better than solo levelling because there are way more characters. MC Protagonist is such a smart ass but it isn't annoying. HIGHLY recommend the manwha and lightnovel.
@@jojonta2119 Been reading like 3 years. But when the writer took a break. I couldn't be bother to read more, it's not that great. Too many character, plots are all over the place. They keep adding new power system every few arcs.

For me, the reason Solo Leveling was so special (considering all the genres it combines), is the fact that the hero genuinely feels human at the beginning. He gets anxious, he worries about his family, he sucks at understanding social queues and other things even tho he can keep increasing his intelligence levels. He just felt like he could actually be your friend and you would love him for that. What happens with other content (being isekai(sh) or just shounen), is that it seems as though the hero has infinite potential and has a set goal. Luffy wants to be the king of pirates and keeps growing because he has a set goal and a heart of gold, regardless of what happens, same with Gon, Deku, or whomever else. Jin Woo also feels consistent as a character. He doesn’t want the world destroyed because the people he loves live in it, and he feels genuine empathy and care for others, regardless of his strength. He legitimately feels like a person, and he feels like a person who’s path you want to follow along because you’re seeing them grow, but also remain human (setting apart his abilities, of course).
he starts out human, then he just turns into an edgelord- in a good way. Like you said, he still keeps that humanity in him, which keeps him from becoming TOO unrelatable.
@@BurntSushi. in what way can you relate to sung jin woo?. after he gets used to the system he becomes the epitome of inhuman; he's perfect in everyway and literally never fails.
@@kingn_n3198the only perfect thing about him is the strength and nothing more which is pretty useless in the human world aside from being able to lift some heavy groceries or something. He still has to struggle to learn social etiquette, make friends and family, form bonds with others, he even struggles while studying. If you remember, in the side story Igris is teaching him something from his school book. He is just like any other human.
@@Fallen_Core He doesn't know how to make friends? Am I misremembering, i feel like every subordinate he gets for the most part easily becomes his subordinate... ie: the young rich D-rank hunter, the girl hunter who smells stuff, and even the demon girl. In the latest episode of the show, it literally shows that just his becoming stronger (and, you could argue, this newfound fearlessness; but I would include this in his getting stronger) substantially improves the relationship he has with his little sister. To the point that it goes from a relationship where she scolds him and is always worried for her-- to the older brother who looks out for his younger sister in a sort of nanny-ish way. (I like this development but i'm just pointing out that this change he has with his family isn't a "struggle". I think saying strength is only useful for lifting heavy stuff is incredibly disingenuous, even in the latest episode the girl who likes sung jinwoo is literally shown having a moment where she is in awe noticing a seemingly new appeal to sung. This appeal being his newly found incredible strength. What social etiquette does sung have to learn??? He is not like any regular human, that is totally proven to be the case when the architect shows how sung was the greatest candidate to become the vessel of the S. M. (I'm assuming you know what that means) I'd agree about him having to study, but it's kind of irrelevant when you take into account that it is happening in a side story after the series has already come to an end. It's something cool for the reader, but I don't think it's fair to say that this "need to study" is somehow an integral piece to sung jin woos character development such that it is one of his imperfections.
I think the reason it's "Kirito done right" is because it feels like Sung earned his obscene amount of strength. You get to see him fight and train tons of times, and early on the stakes are still high because he is so weak that he is constantly against the wall. All of Kirito's strength is earned off screen, even his biggest plot device of Duel Wielding is just pulled out of nowhere with no hints that he did anything to deserve that strength. It would be like if we watched everyone struggle on Namek, and then Goku showed up and was already Super Saiyan and just killed Frieza immediately.
Isn't that like every isekai/power fantasy now,,..., getting OP powers of thin air cuz he's the main character. sao is simply the black sheep cuz it popularized the new wave of power fantasy. There are still many that resembles or flows like sao because that formula works as long the consumers keep eating it like hotdogs
another series that does the "earning" part right is "kumo desu ga nani ka?" but the anime adaptation is kinda awful at times I would recommend the novels
I guess it really comes down to origin stories vs implied origin stories. Kirito had been a serious gamer his whole life before entering SAO, so its just implied that he is "that guy" when he enters into the story, because the story is actually about the technological world they are in and how gaming is interacting with AI and human consciousness and neurology. I agree with you in some sense that it would have been better if they had showed him leveling up in SAO (or even flashbacks or arcs showing how he got into gaming), but if you can just imagine it would be the same as happened in solo leveling, we really aren't missing much. OH, and no, duel wielding is given to the player in SAO with the fastest reaction time (Kirito mentioned it when fighting Yuuki). So I guess he didn't deserve it, but that's kind of like how Sung didn't "deserve" being chosen by the shadow monarch. The are the MC's in power fantasies so they get better stuff than other characters, like all power fantasy stories.
heck even bofuri did it better than most isekai by making the mc OP through combination of many slightly OP skills that might still make sense to have in a game but when used together absolutely broke the game, having the devs try to nerf her adds a little bit of fun to it too
Just like the recommendation for Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, I'd also recommend A Returner's Magic Should Be Special and Survival Story of a Sword King in a Fantasy World. Both are taking time to delve into how their world works, the power structure of their respective kingdoms and governments, and have power fantasies work because their characters earned it.
Well with the stacked list above me, ^ just gotta say you should also check out Overgeared, the title sums it up but it's hilarious how he flies in the face of the developers game balance by dumb luck and ironically being a "bad" gamer
Honestly, I unironically think that one of the big things that helps Solo Leveling feel different from normal power fantasy isekai manga is that there isn't a stupid harem, and the mc is actually cool. A lot of power fantasy isekai manga have bland lame MCs that are supposed to look like normal nerds, and then they get a big harem of fanservicey annoying girls following them around, with lots of time given to MC just interacting with the girls. Solo Leveling doesn't do that. The MC is super cool looking, and acts like it. He isn't a meek submissive nerd who just happens to be strong, he's a cool powerful guy who knows it and acts like it. There isn't a lame harem taking up time that could be spent on more rule of cool awesomeness. On another note, Solo Leveling has in turn done to the Korean manhwa scene what SAO (or debatably Mushoku Tensei, or debatably both) did to the manga scene. There's lots of manhwa somewhat like Solo Leveling, some actually good, taking the premise and adding unique twists and interesting concepts and characters, and others.... just being Solo Leveling ripoffs that aren't as cool as it. Also, there's lots of other awesome Manhwa that deserve more recognition, Solo Leveling derived and otherwise.

@@maybehuman4 Were you not like that the first time you started reading manga or watching anime? While it fits in English speaking mouths less comfortably than Japanese for sure all It takes is some getting used to. I know I couldn't wrap my head around the pronunciation of Japanese characters names when I started, and especially with the honorifics too. Korean manhwa, even Chinese manhua (or any other language really, even English for non-native speakers) are _exactly_ the same.
Not all. Solo Leveling is a pretty standout example in overall quality. While the main characters representations are almost always great the unnamed background characters can be incredibly featureless or rough to the point they stand out like sore thumbs rather than blend in. The backgrounds themselves can be literally copy pasted from a shared asset pool. I have seen the exact same 3d castle/mansion model across at least 10 or so separate titles. Generally these are the dime a dozen "shoujo" romance stories but while manga usually doesn't have recognizable copied assets between one another the level of quality and detail for them are largely similar if you look past the most marketed and popular titles from either.
@@OrionKaelinClips No, I've never had this issue with Manga. Names are much easier to distinguish and remember, even with the -san/-chan honorifics. Hwang Dong-Suk or Huan Dong-Su etc are a pain in the ass to tell apart and keep track of.
the word that you missed that makes solo leveling work is simply its pacing. There is not a draggy moment in the entire series. It's like watching an action flick.Simple but entertaining.
the last ten chapters had horrible pace i reread solo levelling 3 times and only on the third did i finish those 10 chapters, but the rest goes incredibly fast.
Pacing is the weakest part of the story because its paced way too fast. MC start at the bottom and instantly become stronger than the strongest people in the world then author start ass pulling stronger enemies for him to face off against. All the side character get introduced and instantly thrown away. Its fine if you just want mindless action to go through but if you stop to think about the story you find a lot of issues.
@@RexZShadow The pacing is excellent because it doesn't give you time to stop and think about the story. It's doing exactly what it should do, except for the last few chapter as mentioned above by others.
The format between manhwa & manga also shows the approach of their respective countries: Japan sticking to some traditions (printed, black white , page flip) and Korea embracing the tech/future (made for phone/tablet, colour, scroll format). Man I love manhwa. It was like discovering manga/anime again for the 1st time!
True, i read manga for 5 chapter and my eyes already tired On the contrary when i read manhwa it's just scrolling competition 🤣 The visual is amazing As time passes 30 chapter in no time
I think the biggest thing that gives me a hard-on about this series is how there’s only like 3 characters that get any screen time, accept the shadows which are all entertaining, fun, and cool
And ALL of them are good. The hunter woman with the nose problem is good, his well-meaning-but-dumb rich friend is good, his sister is great, and all the characters I don't want to spoil are good. Even characters that seem to be portrayed as asshats, like the American national-level guy, are eventually filled out as characters.
I do love them shadows. I swear they have better personalities than half of the top ten anime's side kicks. And they don't even speak. Well, most don't anyway.
Yeah dude this series is insane. I love how the mc pinpoints all the wrong things, smacks some sense into the others and then see everything flourish under his supreme guidance. The way they all talked shit about him and then he showed them his skill, and then they all suddenly listen to him is amazing. Sadly the series has ended though I hope there will be a season 2. 10/10 would watch kitchen nightmares again.
i get that it would pretty trash knowing what level of budget they could have but cg shadows can be do nicely given the fact that they are not actually shadows but solidified darkness
I've been reading My Dad is Too Strong (Manhwa with the same rift mechanic). It's more comedy centric, also it's just about the main character being OP from the 2nd chapter and dunking on everything. It's great if you enjoy very relaxed stories with no real meaning (And hilarious side characters!)
Solo Leveling: The artwork is just fantastic, many of the pages are just pure artistic masterpieces. Even after taking a bit of a break from it since the end of the first season, I forgot about just *how good* it was.
I recommend this series to everyone that wants to get into manga and manhwa generally. I’ve yet to receive anything except “when is the next chapter and what drug did they lace into my screen for this”
I really hope Garnt does more off topic segments like he did about Kitchen Nightmares, it just makes the video interesting in how he ties it all back at the end
100% agree. I really really loved the earlier chapter, it has character progression and personality. But i dropped it after he keeps going all cocky and self aware of his OP-ness. It's cool and all, but its just repetitive and has no substance.
@@altrazh_xd also the fact that the S rankers are literally useless in the later chapters. Didnt like that setting the author did, i don't even know anymore why other S rankers exist if they cant even scratch the later enemies :v.
"CG Shadows" Honestly considering Solo Leveling's art style, you could actually make this work without it being obvious or bad. It'd just take a good Director and some solid art direction. But also, they're *shadows.* Bar some of the more complex ones, traditionally animating them isn't like animating, say, a mecha. They could take either route and I could see it working.
@@ArceusDX yaw beastars is fine with everything cg but power fantasy will not work that way. The closest I can think of they can get it right with is jujutsu kaisen team or fate series team. It's one thing for it to be possible for CG shadows to be done well; but its a completely different thing to trust an anime studio to actually do competent CG.
@@ArceusDX nah, if orange did it the entire thing would be CG and I’d rather a mix of CG and 2D. How about Ufo-table? They did Demonslayer I think and their use of CG was pretty seemless

I felt that they rushed lot of things in season 2, not to mention the ending The whole leveling things was broken after he broke the system And it's become OPM for the rest of the story
Yeah, an anime adaptation would be almost impossible to do right, considering just how much of Solo Leveling's appeal is visual. You'd need an enormous budget, a lot of time, and some incredible animators.
I wish they slowed down his progress between A and S Rank so that he could begin to tag along with the others and gradually outpace them while they got character development.
Then read The Gamer, the OG all of these are based off of, and have your mind changed with sometimes entire chapters just dedicated to the mc grinding and killing mobs in a dungeon.
I find that solo levelling is pretty unique in the lack of objectification of women in comparison to other male power fantasy isekais. It’s one of the only ones I can enjoy. The MC feels genuinely likeable, solid moral compass and the amount of hard work he puts in feels really admirable. He feels more like those villainess reincarnated MCs than most male-focused isekai MCs to me tbh.
Precisely, that & they give you at least one moment of human emotion - which is something that made Slime one of my top isekai (alongside the worldbuilding, politics, etc. & to be fair, next to most isekai the objectification isn't quite as bad - still bad). It's a tremendous help to an isekai to not have a machine-gun barrage of tits & no characterisation turned on 24/7 & at least give us a glimpse into our protagonist being a real person once in a while.

"I don't know what kind of black magic the webcomic industry has cast to allow us to enjoy full colour weekly chapters." Solo Levelling is made by an entire studio of artists, not just a single artist like most mangas are. Since webcomics are so popular in Korea, it's actually pretty common for them to be made by studios, usually based on a webnovel that was written by a single author. You can think of webnovels being like the manga and the webcomic being the anime of the story.
You know manga aren't made by a single person as well, right? At least after they reach a certain lvl, they get assistants to do certain works, like do the shadows or the setting for the place, the mangaka does the story and the main artwork but the details are often done or at least helped by the assistants, also because they not only have to do it in 1 week or 2 weeks, but also because they make several drafts. At least according to what I know.
@@anubis9151 But his stance still stands that compare the usual manpower of manga, webcomic have a larger manpower with actual studios doing it. But another thing I think that we have glossed over is the fact that most webcomic and manhuas don't much use use paneling as much as in the manga industry. Because like Gigguk explained, the medium itself is catered to smartphone's scroll down viewing. So besides the huge manpower (studio) compared to your usual manga one, the focus on paneling is divert to more intricate art style and coloring.
@@anubis9151 well... assistants does the background and background characters and SOMETIMES the effects but 95% the mangaka itself does all the line work. Mangaka job is actually inhumane. The manwha studio is the same as American comic where every part is shared so that none is pushing themself to their own grave yard *cough* mangakas
Japan does that too-most notably with CLAMP-and I think a lot of comics would benefit from the approach. A weekly comic is too much for one person to deal with, no matter how hardworking.
This honestly sounds pretty cool and the art is absolutely beautiful. Definitely gonna give it a try Edit: read all that’s currently out and I really liked it, particularly the lore and the characters. Hope it gets an anime soon. The only 2 problems I have with it are 1) it has a tendency to rely on fridging (like seriously, SO MANY named characters die unceremoniously or off screen) and 2) a good chunk of the characters are way more interesting than Sung Jin-Woo but are given little to no attention (although to be fair, that’s a problem with most power fantasies)
It’s pretty good, although something Giguk forgot to mention that Solo Leveling has a hobby of introducing great side/supporting characters and then forgetting them.
I can see why it's popular now, I've been binge reading every chapter after this vid, the simplest way to put it, is it's just so fun to read solo leveling, oh and Beru is best boy
OK I've just read Solo Leveling from start to finish. IMO what stands it apart (aside from beautiful art) is that the character makes logical choices. Power Fantasies often go to extremes: 1. The MC makes the right choice but that makes absolutely no sense when compared to the available information. It's like he was given the script and decided to read what comes next. 2. The MC is unbelievable stupid. He makes the wrong choice just to add drama or create an avoidable conflict. And just like in Mushoku Tensei we see Rudeus test how much mana he can use, whether chanting is needed to use magic, etc; we see Sung Jin Woo try the limits of his powers. How far he can use his shadows, how his abilities and that of the special bosses compare to official rankings. He waits until it's safe for him to find out what penalties for certain items are. If we compare it to Kirito instead, he just activates dual sword and immediately knows how to use it and what to do; even though it's his first time. What if there had been a penalty? What if there was an input lag? a combo limit? In Solo Leveling, we learn about the world alongside SJW. And we learn about what SJW can do at the same time as he does. And unlike many stories, there's a sense of progression around an overarching story about an looming threat that slowly crawls into the main center of the stage.
Bro... Kirito had dual swords for 6 months before he showed them off to anyone. Also, the writing in SL is mid at BEST, and if your taste puts that at the top, I believe you just need to grow up a bit more and mature and you will enjoy thing behind the monke bain battle, battle, battle, battle, battle, battle on repeat with no substance, character development outside of the MC getting more emotionless (which is a convenient lazy writing tool the author used so he would have to do absolutely 0 character development after the halfway mark). Also, please never compare this mid garbage to a masterpiece like Mushoku Tensei. You will never get even 1% as emotional reading SL as you would in MT, in fact I know more about the MT world than the fucking SL world and its setting is Fing EARTH!
You have to read "Omniscient Reader Viewpoint" after this. I was recommended that after I read solo levelling. I got into it thinking it was another op Manhua but it is so much more. I didn't think I'll like a manhua more than Solo levelling but it goes many times better than that. A better story, a same level of art and a stellar ending.

YES! YES!! Solo Leveling is the gateway into Manhwa/Manhua/Webtoon drug, now you should read other ones like the Northern Blade, SSS suicide hunter, Overgeared, Her Summon, TBATE, Omniscient Reader... etc... etc.... I think Solo Leveling managed to create a character(although stacked) who earned his way up to the power he ended up with. And they continuously upped the stakes in a realistic/believable way that maintained the immersion. Each episode rarely left you feeling like it was a filler and yet didn't feel like too much was happening constantly, and although each chapter/arc was similar, they managed to be creative as to how he used his massive powers.
There's little to no stakes or tension after he reaches level 100. Every chapter after that we just wait for him to either arrive late to a mass casualty or arrive just in the nick of time to obliterate the dungeon bosses or Monarchs, no in between.
I'd like to recommend a manhwa called Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, which is based on a novel which my sister read the entirety of and gushed to me about. It's about a man named Kim Dokja who one day finds himself living through the events of a webnovel he read, wherein monsters start attacking and people become capable of gaining skills. The protagonist of the webnovel is a man named Yoo Jonghyuk who returns to the start of the scenario every time he dies. Kim Dokja has to survive both the scenarios and Yoo Jonghyuk. It's a lot more complicated and interesting than what I just described, and it has my favorite trope in it which is found family. The manhwa has great art to go along with the (very good in my opinion) story, so I definitely recommend it
Yess, finally someone talking about ORV, I really like Solo Leveling but it sometimes feels too one dimensional and I think Omniescent reader has a similar concept but done better
Your sister is a woman of culture Omniscient Reader only gets better the more you read of it I can’t wait for some of the arcs they have down the line.
Thanks for the recommendation for ORV. I binged it in a day and a half. I had read Solo Leveling before but stopped (I think because I ran out of chapters to read) and feel no compunction whatsoever to go back to read it again. ORV (up to free reading chapter on Webtoons) is fun. Though it does feel a bit meandering because I'm not sure if Dokja has a firm idea for how this whole thing should end and is working toward it, or if the author is keeping the end goal vague so that random side stuff can be added in that ultimately do nothing for that goal other than be a point to grind through for Dokja.
@@noname8354 Ok are there any of those stories that are actually good? Genuinely interested, because I've seen dozens of those and they all just look like the female version of isekai.
@@drumo2273 I'd recommend "If you touch my little brother, you're all dead," because I think the comedy in it is way better than any other "otome isekai/villainess" I've read so far, but that's about all I've got.
Another Manhwa I recommend is “Trash of the Counts family.” Although the Manhwa is not that far in the story, the book is really well written. It takes the classical tropes in these isekai’s and twists them into something amazing. The beginning is sort of slow, but the pace quickens later in the novel. The world building is seriously insane, like the further you read the more things start to connect and make sense. Really recommend this one.
I genuinely hope it stays that way but I’m a little fearful that they brought out the budget for the first time they showed up, I think named soldiers like igris will always be done well though
For those who don't know, an entire Korean Studio handles the art for Solo Leveling. That's why it looks great every week. Many people work on each chapter. It's not just one overworked person like in Japanese Mangas like Naruto or Bleach.
Indeed it is, it's written at the end of every single chapter too. Also, weekly mangas are not being drawn by a single person either, they usually have at least 2 to 5 assistants. Usually main author focus on the characters, the dialogues/story and the overall layout (with a rough of the backgrounds), and then assistants do the inking, the greys, the backgrounds and details. It's the same thing with webtoons btw, there is still a main author even for Solo Leveling doing basicaly the same things as said above (that's why you can get no chapter if he is sick) and they still get overworked like hell too, but the team behind him is bigger and quite literally a company business (while mangas is more "homemade", the author is the one hiring his staff and giving them a workplace).
Wish Tower of Gid author can work with these guys. He is the best ir one of the best artist but is over worked to death. TOG's art explodes halfway through the comic during the Hell Train arc.
the funny thing is that solo levelling fits into this category even more niche than isekai; the 'gate' genre. there exist dozens upon dozens of manwha entailing 'portals open up and monsters come out spelling the start of the apocalypse. some people gain powers, and main character has some opportunity to get stronger way faster than those around him (like some op skills, or by being stuck in limbo for 1000s of years or something)'. I've read quite a few of these myself like limit breaker, advanced player of the tutorial tower, omniscient reader's viewpoint, sss class suicide hunter, along with many that I am glad i've forgotten. the success of some of these 'gate' manwhas has led to a lot of cookie cutter copycats, thinking that decent art + generic op levelling fantasy will rake in endless sums of money. the ones that stick out, and more importantly, stick *around*, are the ones with dynamic characters, ones you hate, ones you love or empathize with, intricate world-building, plot progression that makes sense, well-choreographed fights, ones that make your heart go doki-doki. of the manwha i've listed, limit breaker is one where the end result is quite poor. artwork far superior to the average manwha artist, but writing on the level of a high schooler (although, the writer of the martial peak WN was in high school when he began writing that so maybe not even that level), terrible power scaling, nonsensical dialogue, incredibly contrived drama. that's what makes a manwha sink to the bottom of the metaphorical barrel
He should review Suicide Hunter it's one of my favourites because of its main character. He's a good person with a charming and witty personality that's practically the perfect foil to the antagonist we get introduced to very early on. The time travel/future knowledge to fix the apocalypse genre that's everywhere in the manhwa scene is mixed with MC fixing the antagonist's mistakes and it becomes so satisfying to watch an arrogant prick gets justice served before he gains any power.
"The returning hunter who returned again after leveling up to level up again after returning." Sums up many Manhwas and they're still somehow fun to read.
I recommend the manhwa titled Legend of the Northern Blade. It's an underrated manhwa that has a well-written story, bad ass MC, awesome art style, and it's pretty much just top tier quality. I hope Gigguk would check and review this manhwa and I hope it gets the attention that it deserves because I don't see many people talking much about it or atleast that's what I think.
While SL has the art style of a AAA game, Northern Blade is more similar to a cool indie game; its unique, but still excellent. Personally I prefer Northern Blade
Late to the vid but SL basically made me fall in love with the Webtoon medium. The start was slow but once you reach his second awakening, every chapter will literally hype you up. Reading this weekly is basically edging yourself. You dont get to finish until you finish the story. Thats how hype this series was weekly. It aint perfect but it definitely knows how to keep their readers excited for every chapter. Hell, it made me read the LN because I juwt couldnt wait (tho honestly, I wish I didnt. I still got hyped af and enjoyed the later arcs but that feeling peaked for me during the Jeju Arc).
true. and i and too deep into it. it perfectly fits a mobile phone so i read more toons than manga now. its just easier to consume on a phone. managa is a lot of zooming in read zoom out, scroll left
Yeah, the art of solo leveling is really great. I believe, it's not a single artist who work on it, there's studio who helped him. But that's not really different system from hiring asisstant in manga. Regardless, mantaining that art quality in weekly basis is really amazing
The reasons I think its good: 1. The story is about him understanding and coming to terms with his powers and place in the world. It's not about if he can beat the next boss with how awesome he is. 2. We are explicitly told he is special and OP - they aren't pretending like there is dramatic tension in the fights, just good build up (Hellsing Ultimate is a good parallel). 3. The fights are mental games with existing information (like JoJo), and not full of ass-pulls or power of friendship. 4. While he gets some girls, there is no shitty excuse for a harem to follow him around, and the female characters aren't treated like crap. 5. I don't think you mentioned it, but THE ART IS FREAKING AMAZING! 6. The art is super edge-lord (in a cool way) but the character isn't.
@@youknownothing9556 I mean, it's not death note. But at least it usually comes down to him realizing something or coming up with a new attack. And also if you're not current the latest arc had some interesting Force on Force tactics.
@@Wizzanker NGL, seemed boring and bland to me. I think it is hard carried by Korean style literature and story telling. Overall its lackluster to me in thematics. Korean literature is really good at drawing you in and keeping you glued, and the art style is great. This is great and all, but I feel no depth. Just that things are happening and its interesting, but I can't find deep rooted lore, poetic symbology, or great comedy. It sorta just rides basic themes using good writing. Nothing wrong with that, but it hits me pretty weak because of it.
@@yummychips_ You are right my friend, this story literally has no other merits apart from its art and its fighting scenes. It does the ''good guy beats previously unbeatable bad guy/dungeon and everyone is amazed trope'' very well and that's it. Nothing else. But I'll give it credit where it's due, it does that trope DAMN well.
I can’t wait for season 2. And when you mentioned the part about how it didn’t really do anything different you have to think more about the fact that as jinwoo is leveling, he is reliving his past trauma, all while letting go more and more of his emotions and then you realize just how clear that jinwoo is the player of a permadeath fantasy game.

Solo Levelings character design is mental. Even some random dude in the background wears armour that would be a legendary item in in any other manga. The art is just so good.

Solo Leveling is a prime example that execution is one of the most important aspects in creating a great comic (or any story-based medium).
Not really
Reason Solo leveling is world wise phenomenon was that its storylined was not disturbed by harem harabages just a simple yet a beautiful romance story and the character development of a protagonist simply just amazing and moreover the art in this manhwa was out of the world
@kapu7064ruins it. In some series it seems alr but not most
@kapu7064harems are tasteless because none of the women have dignity nor are worth having when they want to share or the man can’t be a man
@kapu7064 harem would have dragged it down.
Are you being serious with the "simple yet a beautiful romance"? It's one the weakest elements in the story and the girl barely has a personality.
you're lying if you think the romance is "beautiful". that's one of the weakest shit about this series. make sense bc SL is all about action but damn raise your standard and read SSS class suicide hunter for a real power couple, will you?
I’m sure everyone here can agree that the art is so phenomenal that it effortlessly plays as an anime in your head when you read it.
I hope if they animate it, they do it with a huge budget otherwise it will be a fucking mess.
There so cool I crank my self up of joy( and extreme admiration to the sword lord igris every time he appears it's fing cool!!!!)

@@kingn_n3198 true, thats the main and only reason i dropped that
@@kingn_n3198the only perfect thing about him is the strength and nothing more which is pretty useless in the human world aside from being able to lift some heavy groceries or something.
M. (I'm assuming you know what that means)
I'd agree about him having to study, but it's kind of irrelevant when you take into account that it is happening in a side story after the series has already come to an end. It's something cool for the reader, but I don't think it's fair to say that this "need to study" is somehow an integral piece to sung jin woos character development such that it is one of his imperfections.
Honestly, solo leveling is just a perfect hype cycle.
Train, grind, level up, beat boss. Repeat
First three are basically the same, so its actually grind, beat boss, repeat.
Remove the train and you have terraria
@@ziglaus Eventually he just starts grinding the bosses and it just ends up being beat boss, repeat
Well now he skipping most of those and just beat boss, repeat.
Current solo leveling? Lol not anymore. Just "beat boss" and that's it
Gigguk going on a full tangent to hell's kitchen was interesting none the less
I think the reason it's "Kirito done right" is because it feels like Sung earned his obscene amount of strength. You get to see him fight and train tons of times, and early on the stakes are still high because he is so weak that he is constantly against the wall. All of Kirito's strength is earned off screen, even his biggest plot device of Duel Wielding is just pulled out of nowhere with no hints that he did anything to deserve that strength. It would be like if we watched everyone struggle on Namek, and then Goku showed up and was already Super Saiyan and just killed Frieza immediately.
Didn’t kayaba talk about that later or something? I don’t remember
The are the MC's in power fantasies so they get better stuff than other characters, like all power fantasy stories.
heck even bofuri did it better than most isekai by making the mc OP through combination of many slightly OP skills that might still make sense to have in a game but when used together absolutely broke the game, having the devs try to nerf her adds a little bit of fun to it too
"Arise" just hits different
Just like the recommendation for Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, I'd also recommend A Returner's Magic Should Be Special and Survival Story of a Sword King in a Fantasy World. Both are taking time to delve into how their world works, the power structure of their respective kingdoms and governments, and have power fantasies work because their characters earned it.

Well 4 cut hero is awesome

I love manga but hate manhwa. The language is terrible. With names like "Hwang Dong-Suk" it's hard to take seriously, let alone keep track of.

@@ashflake5318 ye i liked the beginning more than i liked the ending
Pacing is the weakest part of the story because its paced way too fast. MC start at the bottom and instantly become stronger than the strongest people in the world then author start ass pulling stronger enemies for him to face off against. All the side character get introduced and instantly thrown away. Its fine if you just want mindless action to go through but if you stop to think about the story you find a lot of issues.

"CG Shadows"
Honestly considering Solo Leveling's art style, you could actually make this work without it being obvious or bad. It'd just take a good Director and some solid art direction.
But also, they're *shadows.* Bar some of the more complex ones, traditionally animating them isn't like animating, say, a mecha.
They could take either route and I could see it working.
Let's see if attack on Titan can do cg thousands colossal Titan then we can hoped for it.

In the world of isekai that's not something that helps. Also it does do it, it's just more subtle, but it just adds to what makes it great.

I love necromancers as a concept in fantasy sethings. And Solo leveling hits the nail on the head perfectly with how they do necromancy.
Really? I feel it's really unbalanced as usually while Necromancers can have physical skill it shouldn't be equal to their skill in Necromancy
Everyone always picking on the necromancer, when all he wants to do is raise a family!!! XD
Nah there's better necromancer stories. Only I Am The Necromancer has awesome strategy type and power ups - manhwa is currently at ch 14. Then there's Seoul Station Necromancer - MC gives zero fucks the story is good till about 60% but then goes to shit after the stupid revelation.

"I don't know what kind of black magic the webcomic industry has cast to allow us to enjoy full colour weekly chapters."
Solo Levelling is made by an entire studio of artists, not just a single artist like most mangas are.
Dear gigguk,
You introduced me to Solo Leveling. THANK YOU SO MUCH OMG I LOVE YOU!!!!
This honestly sounds pretty cool and the art is absolutely beautiful. Definitely gonna give it a try
Edit: read all that’s currently out and I really liked it, particularly the lore and the characters.

OK I've just read Solo Leveling from start to finish.
IMO what stands it apart (aside from beautiful art) is that the character makes logical choices.
Power Fantasies often go to extremes:
And unlike many stories, there's a sense of progression around an overarching story about an looming threat that slowly crawls into the main center of the stage.
but unlike mushoku tensei in solo leveling mc is pretty much the only strong human.
Damn
@@BigFootTheRealOne but he was being trained by the strongest. Shadow monarch is pretty much a god, he was choosen to become one.
I agree! the biggest issue it had was around the mid way point. Once he got the potion, it became aimless for too many chapters.

It’s worth noting that the “hunters setting” (idk if it has an official name) is about as ubiquitous in Korea as Isekai is in Japan, lol.
Not to mention villainess lmao.

For those who don't know, an entire Korean Studio handles the art for Solo Leveling. That's why it looks great every week. Many people work on each chapter. It's not just one overworked person like in Japanese Mangas like Naruto or Bleach.
i think it's reddice studio... they also did art for many other good and famous manhwas.
@@ClemAparia It is at the end kinda same then, as manhwas need colours, making it harder to get something good looking.
@@Skemmm Redice also does Overgeared if i'm not wrong.... the art is beautiful
It seems more like litrpg / "Progression Fantasy" IMO.
Gate? Niche? Are you serious?

"Basically a little babyman"

The reasons I think its good:
THE ART IS ACTUALLY AMAZING
Nah, I could possibly agree with most of them, but not 3, there are no mental games.
