I wish Osborne had stayed through the 2001 season, if he had we probably would have had two more national championships. In 99 he missed coaching so bad he considered taking the head coaching job at Michigan State when Saban left to go to LSU. He basically said he turned it down because he knew Nebraska fans would be pretty upset.

Lynn Henning a sports writer with the Detroit News published a book called "Spartan Season's"chronicaling the political turmoil in the Michigan State Spartans football program from the George Perles era of the 80's until a couple of years ago. It was a pretty interesting read for me having grown up as a Spartan fan, and living through all of the coaching changes, and turmoil that defined Michigan State football during that time. One of the most interesting things written about (and I heard nothing about it at the time all of this was to have occured) were the frequent attempts by Michigan State's former President M. Peter McPhereson to lure Tom Osborne to East Lansing. In 1994 before Michigan State had hired Nick Saban and Osborne was under some pressure with a bowl losing streak that was making the fans here anxious he apparently came close to taking the Michigan State job before talking it over with his assistants and declining. Then he was offered it again in 1999 when Saban left for LSU and gave it some consideration before his doctor strongly advised against it. He was even offered the AD job in 2001 according to Henning.
I was at this game. Beers were expensive. Even so, I don't remember the 3rd quarter and apparently fell into the rows in front of me while everyone was high fiving one another. EVERYONE at this game was awesome. The A&M fans were so fun to party with, and polite. The A&M band was incredible. The residents of San Antonio were accommodating, the river walk was awesome, the Alamo was pretty cool too. 09:55 - this is what I think of, when I think of toughness, and why Nebraska has the right coach!

I don't know if anybody noticed if you watch the replays of the 97 season they talk about talking to Osburn ,in the Oklahoma game the Texas A&M conference game the Missouri game and Oklahoma an Colorado. I watched we're comments were made by Osborne about him coming back for the next year, talking to players about making sure they were coming back that was reported by the press, or too the Press by him . with him knowing he had newcome an Crouch starting the next year I think he was planning on coming back but he was worried he wasn't going to win the title that Michigan was going to win both poles and that's when he decided to pull the carpet out on returning as coach. on one of the game's announcer Jackson openly stated he talked Osborne about making a run for 300 wins getting it had a healthy doctor's report and he was looking forward to it

Definitely...that 93 Husker team was was very, very good, however they drew a more mature and just plain well coached group of players in florida state..many of which would wear a nfl jersey in 6 months after that game...but that loss is what Mr Osborne confirmed what the players said to be truth...that game gave the Huskers the confidence that if they could match that Florida state team, and they did, their confidence exploded along with their resolve as that game was crushing loss..some teams will fold and some would rise..Husker players decided after that game, while still in Florida that the off-season will be brutal and they coming back and run the table the next year...which they far passed that declaration..they ran the tables for next 2 years

While I miss the Option offense, I really miss the athleticism and nastiness of the defenses that NU had. I think that is one of the biggest reasons for the struggles over the years. I believe Frost will have NU back on the map in a hurry, especially as far as offense is concerned. I just really want a tough defense. Go Big Red!

To be fair, K-State, Colorado, and Missouri were the only teams to even hang with Nebraska in 1997. K-State did it for about 2 and a half quarters, Colorado somehow managed to keep it close in the fourth quarter, and Missouri did the same. Colorado and Missouri were well below K-State’s talent level. KSU was clearly the 2nd best team in the Big XII in ‘97 and definitely could have beaten Tennessee as badly as Nebraska did
