    First off, great video. I've had my C100 mkii for about the same amount of time as yourself and I love it still.
    Second, on the frame rate rigmarole - you can set a custom button to go directly to the Bit Rate menu, which will make it 3 clicks to change your frame rate instead of a dozen or so. Here's how to do it:
    1. Go to Menu > Spanner icon > Assignable buttons
    2. Select a button (I use button 1, aka the rewind button on the back)
    3. Scroll to the bottom and select "User Setting" (the menu will turn blue - this just means it's now recording your input)
    4. Go to the Spanner icon > MP4 > Bit Rate/Resolution
    5. You will now see the words "*MP4 - Bit Rate/Resolution" next to the button number in the list
    6. Exit the menu and test the button

    Hi! Thanks for great video! C100mkii can recognize faces, but this feature is only for some STM lenses. I use 10-18 and 18-135 and faces are detected not only in the centre of the frame. So maybe it will help you. If there was Magic Lantern for c100, imo this would be a beast camera for a lot of years.

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  2 года назад

      Oooh! Thank you Andrei. Good to know. Obviously, I don't have the compatible lenses. Have you found the face tracking on those lenses to be reliable? That really would give this camera a lot more mileage.

    • @andreiipoliakov
      @andreiipoliakov 2 года назад +1

      @@ginger_dog It is reliable if you shoot not under minimal focus distance of the lens:)
      It depends, but I often use it. More over, you can set AF mode not only "Face only", but also combine center focused and face recognition. It finds faces in about 90% of the frame. So if there is no face or it was lost by camera, AF focuses in the center of the frame immediately.
      But I work only on STM lenses, I have any USM, so can't say anything about them except that they do not support face AF and auto iris.

      Trying to find time to finish my parents project but I did get them filmed using my C100 MKII, 90, Atomos Ninja & Shogun monitors. Excellent review and commentary. I too am part of the C100 M2 cult and you nailed all the key points-good and bad. Yes C100 can do some face recognition, but it's so pathetic it's not even worth mentioning. Seems like the lack of higher ND is your main gripe, but for me I really, really wish the focus point could be moved by the joystick to any part of the frame. I also don't see any reason why Canon couldn't let you record 4K externally at least, but I'm sure they didn't want to cannibalize their higher-end camera sales. Yes the codec is mediocre, but the files grade good and are TINY! I doubt I'll sell mine even when I upgrade because the camera is such a reliable workhorse and great for long events like presentations and ceremonies. Excellent battery life and I use the EVF a lot. I'll wager to say this camera will be remembered fondly twenty years from now - just a solid, functional camera that built a lot of loyalty in its users for very good reasons. check out my review ruclips.net/video/esyJkKmcW6k/видео.html

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  2 года назад

      You make very good points. File size for what you get in post is unbelievable. Definitely the camera of choice in my book for events because of the mbps, battery life, and audio abilities. That is a puzzle about the lack of 4K external recording, but I bet you are right as to the reasons. You don't see a lot of people raving about it online, but it is a workhorse that many are getting great ROI out of.

    • @Sutterjack
      @Sutterjack 2 года назад

      @@ginger_dog I bought mine in 2019 with some reservations because of 4K being the standard now, but having used one at work for 3 years I was well familiar with the good and bad. Again, when it comes to gear, reliability is huge in my book, and the C100 is well known for just delivering good footage consistently for long-coverage events - just a functional workhorse! FYI when I output my C100 footage in Premiere I up the H.264 export to 20Mbps instead of the default 10Mbps - helps to control the 8bit deficiencies, especially in the shadows a little better without increasing exported file size too much.

    nice review mate.. couple of things that were wrong though; the slow motion there is a quick selection its called s&f in the menu, also autofocus does have face tracking, some of the ef-s stm lenses allow the c100 m2 to have face tracking. my 18-135 efs stm lens is one of them.

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  2 года назад +1

      Thank you Elite Kumite Australia! I have not experimented with the s&f in the menu. How does it work? Does it shoot true 60p? Jordan Chase left a comment that I pinned to the top of this video about how to program quick access to changing the fps.
      You are correct about the lenses too. To my knowledge now, there are only a handful of lenses that are compatible with the face tracking, none of which I own which is why I assumed the camera didn't support it. It doesn't seem like they are super common lenses that everyone has in their kit, but I could be mistaken on that too. I use the Sigma 18-35 art lens and Sigma 24-70.

      This will lead you to a short two item menu. Bit Rate/Resolution should be 24 Mbps 1920x1080. If it's not this, you will want to select this option and scroll to the 24 Mbps option. Next, come out of this menu and select the Frame Rate menu below it. Here you will have two options. In your case, since you want to shoot 24fps, you will choose the 23.98P option.
      Hope that helps. If you run into more issues, don't hesitate to reach out. Would be glad to answer any questions.

      To minimize color grading, hit your menu button again and this time select the first menu identified by the video camera icon. This is your Camera Setup menu. Scroll almost all the way down to where you see CP CINEMA Locked and make sure that is off. That will give you a slightly higher contrast image that should need less grading.
      Another helpful thing you can do is hit your menu button and go four menus down to the OLED/VF Setup menu identified by the shiny screen icon. Five items down you will see the View Assist. option. Make sure that is On. This will make the image on your LCD screen fairly close to the one you will get on the actual footage when you load it into iMovie. The LCD screen isn't out of this world accurate, but having that View Assist. On gets it close.

    What would you recommend for sports recording, like indoor volleyball?

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  2 года назад +1

      Definitely something with super fast autofocus capabilities unless you shoot closed down aperture. Closed down aperture will give you wide depth of field but when indoors, exposure could be tricky. Fast reliable autofocus would allow you to close down aperture and still get great footage. The C70 would be a good option for autofocus, otherwise, if you can shoot at f6 or f8 then the C100 mkii would be awesome.

    Anyone knows if there is a way to make the camera NOT splitting mp4 files?

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  Год назад

      What do you mean by splitting mp4 files? Are you filming one long take and it's creating multiple mp4 files of that take? If so, it's because it has a file size cap for how big of a file it can create. You aren't loosing any moments in your recording, it's just the camera can only handle creating files up to a certain size. Once it hits that ceiling, it starts a new file without missing a frame. If this isn't what you are describing, please specify.

    • @naormeningher

      @@ginger_dog exactly, on 3.95 gb it creates a new file. No way to overpass it?

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  Год назад +1

      @@naormeningher Nope. All cameras do that, they just have different file size caps.

    I have a question about using this camera in low light situations. I was doing professional filming at a venue with subdued lighting (spotlights on the ceiling) and no extra lights. I found I had to raise my ISO to 12800 just to achieve correct exposure. My lens was an f4.5 - 5.6 zoom. The footage has some noise. Is there any way to avoid such a high ISO without using extra lighting?

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  Год назад

      If you can get a lens with a faster aperture, that would be my first recommendation. Find the focal length you need for the venue and see if there is a prime lens that gets you better f/stop.

      @@johnchoice1371 Good question. I rarely change the ISO from the native when filming with this camera. I've not done it nearly enough to be able to answer you with confidence. You'll have to experiment and see when it breaks down.

      @@ginger_dog OK. Thanks for your reply. I have a fast prime lens, but the problem is I generally need the versatility of the zoom and I don't have time to change lenses when filming live events. I might try using a slower shutter speed, see how that helps.

    Is camera recommended for a 1 man band documentary?

    • @ginger_dog
      @ginger_dog  2 года назад

      Well, ironically, I'm shooting a 1 man band documentary on this camera and so far it's really worked well. If you are getting any moving camera b-roll I would recommend a gimbal. Otherwise, shoot tripod or hold the camera really still for some nice formal composition shots. This camera travels and handles well and I've been impressed with its documentary capabilities. Top handle allows for lav and shotgun microphone audio with full size XLR which is essential in documentary filmmaking.
