Enjoyed watching this again, and I think you've nailed it. I still contend if the AF was more modern, this would still be viable for a lot of work in 2024. If it had 10 bit, even more. Thanks for posting this video. This was a great breakdown of what is still are very reliable workhorse of a camera. One of my biggest regrets was not getting the C100 MK II and instead getting the MK I. Some of the ergonomic fixes of the MK II would have been a big help. That being said, I really enjoyed shooting with the C100 and only retired it last year after going to the Panasonic EVA 1. It taught me how much more I could get out of the colours even in 8 bit 4:2:0 with a really solid custom white balance. It helped enormously and I don't go anywhere without one now.

@@Sutterjack Yeah, I've seen plenty of reviews saying the battery life on the C100ii is like the Energizer bunny that lasts a ton. I'm wondering if you might have experienced any negatives on your C100ii such as: Top handle being loose from the one screw only; Colors having a green tint out of the camera; Inconsistent auto focus lock on a face; Cable being a little loose. These are some of the minor complaints I've seen other reviewers say about the C100ii. As for the C200ii, that is also tempting to get, mainly for its 4K output quality, but tons of reviewers lament on the lack of native 4.2.2 10bit output. I personally don't see myself using the raw mode on the C200ii due to its expensive CFast requirement, plus honestly, I'm simply too lazy to have to process a ton of raw footage just to output 4.2.2 10bit. So I don't know if it's worth it to spend around $5600 for the C200ii just for the native 4K output albeit at 4.2.0 8bit. I don't know if the C200ii is RF mount, if so, RF glass is rather pricey and I don't see myself upgrading to RF glass any time soon. At the $5600 price level, there are plenty of other contenders that are very good and can output native 4.2.2 10bit, hence making the C200ii less attractive on a price to feature ratio. Going back to the C100ii, I've seen other videos comparing the image quality of the C100ii versus the Canon R6 mirrorless camera. Although not a "cinema grade" camera, the R6 is quite impressive for its video quality output, plus its ability for shooting stills. So if I only had $2600 to spend, I could choose either the C100ii or the R6. If I were to get the R6, I would probably spend the extra bucks to get the adapter to use my existing EF lenses. So many considerations and compromises to consider, LOL!
@@caseyonlocation8257 Funny how people complain on the top handle thing - I think it's fine. I like Canon color though I don't think it's a deal-breaker over other cameras - I'm more concerned about gradeability. I rented a Nikon Z6 and it was a great video machine but the files were horrible to grade. C100 autofocus is a little overrated, but still decent - just forget face recognition entirely. I know what you're saying about the 4K workflow - especially in RAW. My computers struggle right now and it's frustrating to think of the cost of upgrading for 4K horsepower. I was talking of the yet-to-be released C200 M2 that I want to compare price/specs with the C70. If the C70 had a better hinge on the display and EVF, it would probably be the camera for me. Like I said I love my C100 M2, but the image quality out of the new cameras is amazing. All depends really on what you shoot and where you plan to use it (field vs. studio). Interesting to me that on B&H the C100M2 has a higher rating than the C200. People have high expectations, but they should expect a lot from a camera at that price.
@@Sutterjack So, forget face recognition cuz the C100ii is not reliable for that? So just use "normal" auto focus for center weighted bracket focusing then? Or forget auto focusing entirely 100% cuz AF doesn't work at all on the C100ii? Not sure what you meant. I rely on auto focusing, preferably on my face for talking head videos, or even for documentary/interview filming in the future. As I get older, my eyes are no longer 20/20 especially for closeup stuff. Even with reading glasses on, it can still be a struggle sometimes to make sure stuff is in focus if I had to do it manually. In my younger years, I used to manually focus a fully manual Hasselblad 503cx film camera body when I was shooting weddings and portraits for yeeeeeaarrs. I relied on an optional split image prism inside the viewfinder to line up the image vertically to know an image is in focus. Nowadays, I simply give up on manual focusing, cuz as mentioned my eyes are no longer 20/20 like I had in my 20s and 30s. So yeah, auto focusing on the face and eyes is pretty much a necessity for me. I suppose I could try using the focus assist feature (assuming the C100ii has that), but then again I'm lazy...truth be told. I've gotten spoiled by very good face tracking AF on my Canon XF400, Canon Vixia G60, Canon 90D, Canon M50 cameras that I'm pretty much spoiled by that feature. I realized auto focusing is considered amateurish by film-making standards, but the thought of manual focusing and manual focus racking is like...ugh. As for the Canon C70, yeah I've seen lots of videos on that too. Yes I've also probably seen the same videos complaining about the LCD hinge not being so rugged. The lack of a view finder might be disturbing if using the C70 in bright outdoor daylight. I'm sure it has better codecs and maybe low light performance and all that, but for over $5,500 price tag...it should LOL! The more I think about all this, I probably don't want to spend more than the price of a C100ii cuz for the type of content I do, it's not worth spending $5k to $10k for a cinema grade camera just for the luxury of slapping on one of my Canon EF lenses. Now I see why some users prefer using their DSLR/mirrorless bodies if they truly want that f1.8 bokeh effect along with all the other modern conveniences that a DSLR/mirrorless new age camera offers. If not for all the over heating issues of the R5 and R6 bad press, I would be severely tempted to get the R5 or R6 myself. Maybe the new R3 will fix the over heating issues? Don't know but fun to speculate.
@@caseyonlocation8257 Modern camcorders are amazing and have so many things to like - especially the price! We bought the Canon HF G50 at work recently and it blows me away for $1100 - great 4k and terrific face tracking. So many good choices now. Hard to know where to put your money these days with the pace of technology - frustrating !
Canon Canon Canon - if only you would throw us a bone and let us record 4K externally even at only 4.2.O 8bit it would be great. Why Canon, why do you hate us?
It is a problem - I've been told, at least with my 5D M3 to set the color profile to neutral and turn sharpening down - then bring color/sharpness back in post. Still doesn't look as sharp as the C100 but decent. I actually plan to buy a EOS R to use as B cam to my C100 and on gimbal. I haven't shot with a 5D 4 - may be a better video image than my 5D 3.
Very informative video! I have a question regarding the face tracking. I also have a efs 17-55 f2.8. Does that lens support face tracking on the Mk II? Thanks
According to my instruction manual the C100 M2 face detection only supports 6 EFs lenses and unfortunately yours is not one of them. The face detection is a joke and honestly pretty useless.
When I select 23.98 I have stuttering image. What am I doing wrong? Or is it possible that my camera is broken? At 60fps I have no problem at all. Works perfectly. thanks for your helpful answer.
Possibly your shutter angle is off or your system frequency got changed? I'd have to see what you're talking about to understand the problem - same problem at 30fps?
All depends what you mean by video quality. As I said in my video most people swear by shooting Clog for maximum gradability, but I personally prefer wide DR. The camera itself is limited internally by only being 4.2.0 8bit. I've found I've been able to increase my final, edited footage quality by increasing the MBPS setting but it's a compromise between the quality you want and the file size that's acceptable to you. Hope this helps
@@ВладимирШкваря.Мирмоимиглазами Нет проблем товарищ I use many different lenses - obviously the Canon L glass is the best quality, but because of the 1.5 crop on the C100 sensor you can use EFs lenses with no problem too. The lens shown in the intro shot is the 17-55 f2.8 EFs - great all-around lens, sharp with nice range - has IS too. I use the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM for wide shots, I also use the sigma 15 f2.8 fish eye for a cool perspective. A lot of Sigma glass is great - one of the most popular lenses for C100 users is the 18-35 f1.8 - fast and sharp - I want one but can't really justify the cost. Hope this helps
I always appreciate the positive feed back from C100 owners - I really feel the "4K Envy" these days, but I just can't justify the cost until I get some work rolling that demands it. The C100 is showing its age, but it just WORKS - reliability is big in my book.
The C100 is the equivalent of a APS-C sensor - crops 1.5X. So it's a perfect match for EFs lenses. For example I own the 10-18 EFs lens and at it's widest it becomes a 15mm equivalent on my C100.
Its a pure workhorse... ill take an EVF over a monitor anyday... considering you can buy one for around $1000 is insane... and if you are pushing to RUclips, you can up res to 4k , no one is going to tell. 94% of people view RUclips on a phone.
I plan to keep mine as a backup/ safety / Bcam even now shooting with a C70. You make a good points - I saved some recent C100 footage output to 4K in Premiere and then uploaded to RUclips- looks really clean. For this clip the wide was EOS R (HD) Closeups - C100 M2 ruclips.net/video/Zfymg4eu5Mo/видео.html
I would add that the difference in properly shot C100ii footage and 4K on another camera in a controlled environment (no high dynamic sky backlighting...) would show less difference than the difference of optimizing your upload settings for RUclips. Mediocre YT upload settings on an Arri will look worse than a C100ii with good upload settings. Combine this with most folks looking at content on phones an tablets in bad lighting while doing something else..... the C100ii is still overkill for most social content!

C100 ninja 2 was a great combo, not so much for image improvement (not much of a difference) but just faster editing workflow not having to transcode
Canon Canon Canon - if only you would throw us a bone and let us record 4K externally even at only 4.2.O 8bit it would be great. Why Canon, why do you hate us?

Great Video my problem is trying to get it to match my 5d Mark VI when I have a 2 camera shot any suggestions?
@@Sutterjack ah bummer. Thanks a lot for the reply
Hello. What is the best video quality for Canon C100 Mark2 or Canon 90D?
All depends what you mean by video quality. As I said in my video most people swear by shooting Clog for maximum gradability, but I personally prefer wide DR. The camera itself is limited internally by only being 4.2.0 8bit. I've found I've been able to increase my final, edited footage quality by increasing the MBPS setting but it's a compromise between the quality you want and the file size that's acceptable to you. Hope this helps

@@Sutterjack What lens were you shooting with?
@@Sutterjack Thank you. Totally agree with you. I also have 17-55 f / 2.8
The C100 MK II has been a WORKHORSE for me. Even in 2021! I've owned it for about 4 years, and it is still VERY relevant! I love this camera!
I always appreciate the positive feed back from C100 owners - I really feel the "4K Envy" these days, but I just can't justify the cost until I get some work rolling that demands it. The C100 is showing its age, but it just WORKS - reliability is big in my book.
Does it take EF-S lenses ?
The C100 is the equivalent of a APS-C sensor - crops 1.5X. So it's a perfect match for EFs lenses. For example I own the 10-18 EFs lens and at it's widest it becomes a 15mm equivalent on my C100.
@@Sutterjack , indeed great full hd image. Will never sell my c100 ii. Canon crop is 1.6 x.
