@@robertbutchko4275 Ohtani cannot run until it was clear it was a double. He does not need to take risks. The runner on First has more time to run back if the ball was caught, hence can take more risk.
There was nobody out so they had to hold up. Had there been two out they would have crossed the plate much sooner. The second base runner is more vulnerable than the first base runner because second base is closer to the outfielders so it's a shorter throw, so the first base runner can move up farther and still have time to get back to first if the ball is caught. The second base runner doesn't have that luxury. The Shuto was probably already close behind Ohtani when they realized it wasn't going to be caught.
Unsung heroes of this game: Taisei, who relieved without problem on the top of 9th; Genda, the shortstop who played with a broken pinky, made that over-the-head basket catch and also made a sacrifice bunt; and that crazy fast pinch runner Shuto who scored the game-winning run (So glad he didn't trip in this pandemonium!)

Japan's broadcasting was by the far the most energetic and I love it but its actually ironic to call it far elite. In fact its so devoid of content its hilarious. Its essentially MURAKAMI HIT IT! MURAKAMI... MURAKAMI!!!! AAAAAHHHH OHTANI IS COMING HOME AND.... SHUTO HAS COME BACK. GOODBYE (means Walkoff in this scene). The other announcer didn't even get a word in because he was so awed that Murakami hit the ball and was saying GO GO COME HOME. They essentially just turned into fans.
You know, I'm glad Team Mexico was visibly sad and disappointed. Because it shows they wanted it, that the WBC actually MEANT something to them. For years baseball has been on the decline in popularity. This is my first time watching the WBC and I'm so fired up. So many amazing, heart-stopping games throughout the tournament. I really hope that baseball sees a surge of popularity after the WBC.
Pretty good point. I’m American and this whole attitude of “wbc doesn’t mean anything” is so annoying. Mean anything to who? 4 out of the 5 Dominican mlb players on their roster said winning the wbc would mean more than the World Series and the other said it would be tied. There was a player who was called by his country’s president and asked to play. The guy on Taiwan who is trying to make the mlb wasn’t gong to play and got so much backlash from the Taiwanese that he basically had no choice. I’m going to misspell his name so I won’t try but the Cuban national on the Mexican team was granted citizenship directly by the president because he said he’d play if he got it. I’d say the wbc sure seems to mean something to a lot of people.

I’m exposed to the American version of the game and the broadcast style but I notice this kind of foreign broadcasters passion for other sports like soccer in particular. Baseball is growing in popularity globally. It's just declining in the US. Hopefully this tournament will get more Americans back into the game!
