Mistakes? You did better than me. We bought a truck and trailer and loaded a boat and headed out. Stopped at the first Florida weight station and DOT asking for all of our paperwork and Logbook. Our reply, ...I have no idea what you're talking about! He laughed and said "the only law you haven't broken was pulling into the weight station " that's making mistakes!🤣🤣🤣

Advise first your future brother -
#1 Bells & whistles dont pay the bills & dont get you better loads. You got bad info on GVW. If your under 8k (truck only) per FMCSA/DOT you will not be inspected as a heavy truck. Wont matter how heavy the trailer is or the load your carrying. (Ive had 3 Level 1 insp & passed every time WITH a full load (32k lbs)
#2. Should have stuck with RAM. They offer a specialized option of their Tradesmen edition that is built for hot shot hauling. Better trans, bed lighting, spray in bedliner, better gear ratio & all the tow options. Cant beat a Cummins for long life & power. List price is around $55k (Bought mine for $47,500 OTD)
#3 GET YOUR CDL. Not required but it'll open a lot more doors for you.
#4 Register your truck at the manufacturer's placard weight. (Below 8k) That will keep you from having to deal with IFTA taxes.
#5 Get a ELD! Required by law if your driving more than 150 air miles from home.
#6 Most important advice I can give you is understand you are selling yourself not your truck or business name. Be professional, humble, respectful & honest with every customer. It'll generate more business than any load board can.
I've been doing this for a while now & trust me, the opinions I listed come from my own trial & error. But it's only my opinion, every man must walk his own path.
Check out TowPiglet & Truck&Travel on RUclips. Great people I know that are open books of knowledge and loves to help newbies be successful.
Good luck brother, God bless & stay safe out there. FAITH & FREEDOM TRANSPORT INC.

I have a 98 Dodge ram 3500 and it's a very good truck to hot shot with and it was a truck that was given to me by my dad and he also gave me a 26 foot dovetail now one thing if you do happen to go into it yourself you will have your first dot Safety audit and that will happen after a year of you having your operating authority and make sure that you have everything in order cuz if you don't they will revoke your authority it is good to be leased onto somebody but you need to watch yourself because some companies will screw you over and I don't know what size trailer you have or going to pull but if it's a 40 foot I would have definitely got you a dually and I would definitely go and get your CDL because if the hot shot and stuff don't work you could always go and drive semi trucks it's not that hard to do all you have to do is study for it I have my CDL and once every two years I have to go do a DOT physical and that's where they check your eyes and your hearing and so on and so forth my dad's got a 40 foot dovetail that we use from time to time to haul four wheelers with I have two customers that are all four wheelers for and one of my customers I haul trailers for as well and depending on the weight in the trailer that you're going to pick up for somebody you may definitely need to have a CDL

I have done this same thing with new dodge trucks. if i can offer a bit of advice..these trucks are expensive and you will be putting a ton of miles on it faster than you will be paying it off...figure out how many miles you plan on putting on this truck before you sell, trade in on a new one or retire this one. take the total cost of the truck and divide this by that amount of miles. that will give you a truck payment cost per mile and let you know how much extra you need to pay on that truck in addition to your monthly payment. this will help you from being upside down on value (never know when life will change and maybe you want to sell off the truck). otherwise, in 2 years when it has 200,000 miles and you still owed $40,000 or so on it (no idea what your interest rate is or the term you chose). or 4 years at 400,000 miles and still owe $20,000. also consider that you will need to put back money to replace this truck at that time. i made every mile count on my truck. i had my own authority. i got set up with a couple manufacturers and i hauled exclusively for them, same loads every few days. i hauled cars back because they were plentiful and paid ok.(again repetitious loads with a contracted dealer). my main load paid better than average load board rates. this made hauling cars a good easy and fast back haul. repetition was the key to efficiency for me. i put between 250,000 and 285,000 on my trucks and sold them when they were about 3 years old. once the trucks crest 300k miles.....the value drops dramatically. if you plan to go 300k i would suggest taking it to 500k (hopefully it makes it) and then just retire it. i have known people go up to 500k but they were constantly plagued with nuisance troubles that were not expensive to repair but they would keep them from driving. i wish you luck!

Everyone commenting on how they want to get started, keep reading all the other comments saying the same exact thing. That is your competition. Be aware that the market is FUCKED up right now because of everyone getting into hotshot. In the last 2 years I've seen the pay come down at least 35-45%. Hell, I called on something to be dispatched 2 days ago, was told it would be dispatched to me and before I could hang up someone was calling up offering to do it cheaper than it was listed. So they gave it to them. All these new people are racing to the bottom on pay because they are desperate to work and don't realize you cannot sustain a business this way. I'm sorry to say, but a lot of you new guys joining are ruining it for everyone.
My insurance agent told me about the astronomical increase in hotshots hes insured in the last 6-12 months, but an overwhelming amount of them are going bankrupt within about 3 months because they are simply not making enough. They are not asking to be paid what they are worth, just what they can get.

You could of just bought a semi truck with a sleeper and a regular flat bed or step deck.
I been trucking since 03 on and off.
    Had my own authority twice.
My insurance on a big truck with reefer.
980$ a month. Includes reefer break down and other tow perks etc.
Reefer was 27k with 10k hours. 2012 man year.
Truck was 22k in 2013. But I have rebuilt the engine and other things.
I have put 20k on avg per year in the truck. That’s with me doing as much labor myself as I can. I’m a basic entry level bolt on bolt off mech. I don’t do anything major. That goes to the shop for the pros.
I made 150k last year gross. 80k miles traveled.
    Worked about 180days otr.
The rest was home and watching tv or working on the truck or hanging out at the gym.
There is money in the business. I’m not sure about hot shot but big trucks still have money in it.
You have to run legal and it pays off in the long run to have a good authority and good ins. You can charge more if you have a good rep.
Key in this business is to keep people out your pockets. Shops, factoring, high interest loans , road side repairs etc. just keep folks out your pockets and you should make a living.
Good luck. Stay safe and welcome to trucking business.

And even though many don't do it when actually on the road, for the test, you need to cover everything that is supposed to be checked. That includes down to even, the wipers, windshield washer, horn, seat belts, etc. Most people say the lights, tires, lug nuts and the big stuff and then forget the little things. Read the handbook for the test. it covers all the stuff you need to know. it is mostly just common sense, so don't over think it.

Class A ddl. Find a company that offers company sponsored training. Swift, Prime, Schneider, PAM, Rhoel, and many others will pay for training upfront and you sign a contract to work for a year and a small portion of your pay each week. I am almost done with my first year with one of the mentioned companies then i am free to move to another company if i wish without having to repay a student loan for the schooling. I recommend going to truckingtruth.com to bone up on the tests and read over the forums. If you do go for it and become a truck driver good luck.... one piece of advice is listen to your trainers and be hungry for what they teach.

Hey would you have changed your truck decision now that Tow Piglet has let out the trick of just having the trailer company to change the GVW sticker on your trailer to accommodate the 26000 pound rating? I mean if you could get a redo would you go with the Dodge Dually and a new sticker on your trailer?

    • @my11badkids78

Or would you ever consider doing the 1 ton dually Enterprise long term rental? That's my only concern in starting Hotshotting. I would probably want a new truck to cut back in maintenance but then it would end up with several hundred thousand miles on it before it was paid off. That long term rental deal seems worth it. I was just wondering your thoughts on it.

I worked at Aisin drivetrain for 2 years it's in Crothersville Indiana. Ok if only you could see how those shit boxes are made you would be surprised that a single one made it to 100k miles. New hires got 10 mins of training. Everyone was either hungover or high on painkillers. The production control department supplied the main line with parts would drop shit all the time scrambling to pick it up and put it on the line. A lazy ass supervisor got tired of every 3rd trans failing leak test he plugged part of the leak tester with duct tape so it would always read positive pressure.

(edit) just get a CDL, no point is selling yourself short.
being as the insurance and all other cost are the same i bought a 2012 Freightliner Cascadia single axle day cab. (im not doing super long hauls) bought it with 500k on the clock. has egr cooler leak and oil wicking the injector harness. so after the $10k i paid for it i got another $5k into it to have it road ready. has a detroit dd13 and 10 speed fuller. loaded it will get better mpg than a loaded pickup hands down. will break less, and give me far less trouble. turns sharper, stops better and is far more comfortable with far better visibility than any pick up. it's easily got another 500k miles of life left in it and i promise you that ford will not give you 500k even if it was not worked hard. i just can't see buying a pick up for this type of work. not after the 5 transmissions and 3 rear ends my dodge has ate up to reach the 500k miles it currently has. the only thing that lasted was the cummins and that powerjoke will never live that long. that is not me being a brand nazi that is honest experience from a guy who has been doing this a long time and destroyed enough trucks doing to to know what is what. no pickup will survive doing work meant for a road tractor.

SouthGeorgiaHotShot and yet they still get you down the road in the same amount of time, with less maintenance, and will last a million miles if you treat them right. The reason for that is simple. Ford didn’t even make a 7.3. International made it for them, and in fact its the exact same engine they put in their Medium Duty trucks (33,000 GVWR and below). International calls it the T444E.
I will say I think Ford did a good job with the 6.7. Most last about 500,000 or so. So you’ve got a good truck for a few years at least.

Not sure why this GVWR issue is being made to be so controversial because its really very simple. If your vehicle is RATED higher than 26k you need a CDL, if not you don't. Proof, ANY Joe Blow with a drivers license can go buy a 26' box truck rated under 26k and drive it off the lot no CDL required. Why because the GVWR is not the true weight of the vehicle but the "safe operating rating" so you can go load that vehicle up and as long as you don't exceed 26k (combined load and truck) there is no infraction. Now in the same situation someone with a CDL can also not load that vehicle up more than 26k because that's the vehicle rating and they will be considered in violation for overloading. With that being said, being overloaded does not automatically mean your getting a driving without a CDL charge it just means your overloaded and will be required to reduce your load amount before you can operate. You may be ticketed by someone that doesn't understand that but it will not hold up. A truck and trailer is no different. The truck has a rating and the trailer has a rating together they can not be over 26k and the load can not exceed the rating of either axle meaning you can't shift a load forward or backward to fool the scale.

20% is way to much. 15% is customary but still to much. The fuel card will save you at the big chain stops that overprice their fuel. The mom and pop stops and cash is the way to go. You need to find your own customers and run your own dot numbers and get 100% of the revenue. Call nastc national association of small trucking companies pay the 250.00 take the class. Get their fuel card. Pay the 350 for your own mc numbers pay your own insurance. Or at least get your mc and have it on hold till you can afford to do it all at once. But having your own customers is key.
