  • Join us for part two of our discussion about the 70s most celebrated brother/sister duo, The Carpenters. After getting real about Karen and Richard's difficulties in last week's episode, we offer a palate cleanser in the form of a musical deep dive. We gush about our favorite songs and what made them oh so personal. Which song connects Carolyn to her father? Which song made Kristin cry post-partum hormonal tears in the middle of the night? Plus, how did the songs get that signature sound? Sometimes when you know the stories, the songs get even better.

"Hurting Each Other" was a huge hit and actually went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart...it was ranked at the 65th biggest single of 1972.

Thank you for correcting that. Hurting each other was huge. Reaching number two on the billboard hot 100 is accurate.

FYI - their background vocals consisted of both Karen & Richard, and they each sang 2, 3 or 4 separate harmonic lines, and then these separate tracks were electronically doubled, so there were finally 8, 10 or 12 backing tracks overlayed on the lead vocal - this was unique and special and sounded great - what didnt sound so great was when Karen sang over (double-tracked) her LEAD vocal on songs, which many feel distorted her pure, natural beautiful voice - a good example of this is the chorus on "Superstar" which has her voice doubled (as opposed to the verses) - there is a video of her during their 1971 concert on the BBC where she sings this song live, with no double tracking of her lead vocal on the chorus, and one can actually hear her gorgeous voice unadulterated...
BTW - the reading of the lyrics off a napkin and recording "Superstar" in one take is all true...
Her rendition of "I Need to Be in Love" in 1978 is the best version, primarily because she doesnt double track the chorus, as she does on the studio recording - the same thing can be said about the beautiful "Merry Christmas, Darling" from the same show (surprised you didnt mention this song because of its lasting popularity down thru the decades).
Thanks for the shoutout to "Carpenters: A Musical Legacy" and to the Carpenters Forum, where tons of info about Carpenters can be found - and me too!

Whoa , it’s John Bettis. THE JOHN BETTIS ? Wow !!! I could sit and listen to you tell stories for days. I’m dumbfounded speechless. I never thought about the lyricist that much in the past until I discovered you . I love you, man.
❤ Karen Carpenter, John Bettis, and Richard Carpenter forever ❤

Big fan of the Carpenters....love Karen! I´m currently looking to buy the vinyl albums "A Song For You", "The Tan Album" and "Close to You". I bought the coffee table book "Carpenters: The Musical Legacy" and Randy Schmidt´s book "Starving
For Perfection". Denmark here (Sept. 2024).

No, they did NOT lip synch in their concerts!! They were a 7 piece band and did the harmonies. Karen was the only femal voice.
