The world truly misses Karen Carpenter.
I’ll never ever be ashamed or embarrassed to say I love this band.
Same for me. I'm a hard rock loving guy. Led Zeppelin and Van Halen to name a few. But I always loved the Carpenters too. Karen's voice just kinda grabbed me and pulled me in at a very young age.
People should be ashamed to say they don't like this.
One thing that stands out when watching this, is for all the commercial success they had, and for as broad as they’ve often been criticized for being over the years, you get a sense that it’s still really all about the music for them. They’re really excited about the arrangements and musicianship, and you can see that it’s what drives them. Not the money or the success. That’s more than can be said about many modern and past acts, for whom it’s all about the image. It’s a bit ironic how so many acts are more about the sex and controversy than the music, yet these musical geniuses were criticized back in the day for being “too wholesome”. I miss wholesome, and I miss music.
Nice comment. And I have to emphasize “missing the music.” The Carpenters gave us the best music in every sense. They were consummate professionals. Music of today is absolute noise. I would say that it’s devolved. Rhythm and harmony is replaced with pounding monotonous bass.
_And by the way, Karen has the most beautiful big brown eyes ever!_
I miss music, too. The Carpenters whoop the bejeezus out of today's narcissistic crap ass musician wannabes. True extraordinary talent. 🤘
Much of what’s out there today isn’t music.
@@danielsccrmom16
You're being generous when you say "much."
There might be something good in today's music, but I can't find anything.
I totally agree with you, I was just a kid in the 70's and while I'm watching this, I'm starting to cry. Don't know why, it just brings back memories of better times.
2023 thumbs up if your still watching this kind of concert ❤
this is what we call real live show no hocus-pocus so amazing she sing like an angel❤
I’m here STILL DIGGIN KAREN 💔❤️
Watching now and thinking wow this is really cool.
I absolutely love Kaen and The Carpenters, I have enjoyed listening to a few of their songs over the years but I'm seeing them really for the first time after watching the movie last night and a few of the recorded concerts here on the tube. I turn 50 next year and I can't believe it's taken this long for me to switch and tune into their music Gheee Whiz they were absolutely fabulous artists.
And still watching in 2024 ❤
No “Auto-Tune” on any voice has been used! And as you heard them say, they sing 4 part harmony!! 👍👍👍
Karen will never be matched. Heart, soul, beauty, and she kept time better than a wrist watch.
Never❤
This is a gem! Karen on drums and singing in 1972. Her voice is so melodic and smooth. The band is also fantastic, and Richard's and the bands harmonies make that Carpenter's sound. 2023 and still digging it. 🙂
It's my favroite live Carpenters concert out of them all. The Bachrach/David medley is 12 minutes of pure magic.
@@zigman8550 And it could as well be 15 minutes, had they not played it that fast. Karen rules this planet!
Karen Carpenter, completely untouchable in her talent and style. The definition of a class act
Peeeeeee Pazow!
Absolutely for sure... Magical Voice! Sounds like an Angel......
And she looks so happy while playing drums.
That's the real reason why do i like about Karen Carpenter since Shrek and the Final Chapter
@@Diomede-Lefort that’s what I’ve noticed too. I wish they’d have let her stay on drums
Karen Carpenter
Number 1 Female Vocalist.
Number 1 Female Drummer.
That’s a global rarity indeed.
Yeah, when you put it that way...I know they're out there but I honestly can not name another female drummer
Don't forget number 1 sister.
Just your biased opinion
🤣
No lip syncing. No auto-tune, and every note is absolutely perfect. God they were talented!
She was 22 years old with all this talent
I was only thinking the same thing! 😮
Best female voice ever! Her tone, intonation & pacing were perfect. It all happened so fast. Must have been God given. She was a real sweetheart! Her feeling & interpretation of the songs was great! Such a tragedy what happened to her later. If only she had realized how beautiful she really was -- there was no need to lose any weight. I think she was a wonderful girl!
Maybe Patsy gives her a run...but yeah...Karen is a Goddess!
Beautifully said!! Agreed!! ❤️
She also incorporated a beautiful vibrado in her voice.
Best Ever!!!
Elton John has said that his perfect female voices are Karen, Eva Cassidy and Judy Dunham
When I was a teenager it was so uncool to like the Carpenters. Now I am older, I can see and feel the beauty in their music. Karen is mesmeric.
yes, today music is noise
Those who weren't afraid to love her also found her beautiful, angelic, graceful & mesmerizing. Fortunately you haven't missed out 😶
AMAZING TALENT ❤❤❤❤
Ha! Imagine me in 9th grade in 1991 when I liked The Carpenters and the rest of my peers were more into Nirvana 😅 I just knew quality music back then, when it was uncool.
Yes haha they thought we were ghey
Greatest female vocalist of all time. Period. Loved her in the early 70's and still love her today.
She sounds most amazing in this particular concert.
Karen Carpenter is an absolute joy to watch. Not only was she a natural talent she was a pure class act. Miss her so much.
Same here. It's magical. Till this day I miss her too. This was a great show. Wish it was longer. 1 hr. Would have been better. Great quality from 1972.
She bestows magnetic presence and beauty as well.
Of course I adore the heavenly voice of Karen Carpenter, but she was also a very talented drummer, and a very funny person to boot ! Not to mention absolutely beautiful ! A once in a lifetime talent to be sure.
And on the day that you were born the angels got together....always mesmerized by the carpetenters even at 7 years of age I'd sit and listen intently. I wanted to be a drummer and that sealed the deal.
To this day, no one can match Karen Carpenter's beauty and talent. RIP, Karen.
SUBLIME. They were still almost just kids at 22 and 25 and they were total professionals and on top of the world. You can't practice your way to being what they were. Richard is often overlooked - but he was/is a brilliant composer/arranger/musician. And Karen - oh, Karen - the PRECISION, the EASE, the TIMBRE and musicality.
They are doing, live on stage, with the analog tech of 50 years ago, a dozen back-to-back performances of highly produced album songs. And they are NAILING IT! It's bordering on superhuman.
Boy, that Australian audience got a show to remember...
Wow! First time watching a Karen Carpenter performance. “We’ve Only Just Begun” just made me break down in tears!
She was the best female singer of the 20th century.
i agree even today 2018... no one comes close to her
even today, no one comes close
and drummer
Chris Jones Be careful!!! That is a very big call there!! Though I don’t disagree, you still have to consider Whitney Houston, Judy Garland and others!
And so far the 21st too.
Watching her sing and play drums at the same time, made one realize they were in the presence of true musical genius.
Props to the clarinetist for covering parts originally played by oboe (Superstar) and trumpet (Close to You solo) and making his instrument sound like all of them.
My heart still breaks for the loss of her beautiful voice. I'm thankful to have lived during her time.
Hearing Karen sing Close To You on this video just gave me massive chills all over my entire body. I've loved her singing this and so many other songs since I was ten-years-old. I've often said that when I die, if I am fortunate enough to make it into heaven, I hope the first angel's voice I hear singing belongs to her.
We agree 😇...💖...👸..🤩...💥...💫
I agree with you 100%. I’ve often said too that I hope to see her in heaven.
This is her happy place...
Amazing how perfect her voice was live.
Gator Man Even better than on record. She added little exaggerations like extending a note which just made it better.
Gator Man She must have started singing at around 5 years old to have such a perfect voice.
+Sheena Colbourne 16 is correct Sheena; she also had very little voice training; her teacher told her i won't touch that voice, the only part he trained her on was her high register.
Karen always gave her best, 120% in performing. Unlike Whitney & Barbra, also two of the Finest, they felt they needed to "change it up" in each performance, never the same. Why? Their first recordings were the BEST. Karen was consistent & they had nothing on her.
This
Karen has to have one of the top voices ever and do mean EVER
totally agree
A Star in Heaven, God's Lead Singer in Heaven.
Hard to believe Richard is 77 years old now. Karen left us far too early, she had the most amazing voice, one of the best of all time.
Man what talent LIVE! Even explaining how it’s done! No machines no auto tune! Pure RAW TALENT!
they were victims of the sexual revolution
Unbelievable ❤❤
I would not call it raw talent. I would call it being a professional musician... because most popular music is made by amateurs.
No. Lol..
@@greendeane1 but of course real musicians song writers ! But live n Raw!
Karen Carpenter had the voice of an angel. “Superstar” brings me to tears every time.
What amazing Stage Presence. Everyone there couldn't keep their eyes off her..& ohh how they loved her!!!
This is such a Great Concert!! It must have been something special and you can tell how much they love the music!! Karen sings with such a heart and she is only 22! The keyboards & arrangements & harmonies are amazing and the other musicians! I love seeing Karen's joy while drumming and singing.
OMG! That exquisite voice of hers! It can break a heart, or heal one!
Yes!
So true brother...she helped me recover from my own anorexia. Just so sad she couldn't get over her own...
WOW!! What a concert! Cool that their vocal coach was there directing the orchestra. SO MUCH MUSICAL expertise! You can see how much Karen loved the drums. I didn't even know she played until recently though I was a teen in the 70s.
So young at 22 & 26 and already international superstars! Much more talented than I ever realized!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I can’t believe it’s actually live, these are spectacular performances
Noone will see this, but I'm an Aussie, Karen's heartbreaking death saved my life - and I was nowhere near how devastatingly sick that poor woman became. Karen, you saved so many of us. 😔

What a beautiful thing to say and a lovely tribute!
I’m always overjoyed when I find live performances from their early albums. My late wife and I saw them live 3 times, and this brings back memories of the first time ❤. Her angelic voice was such a loss. There will never be another like her.
That glorious Bacharach medley. So brilliantly arranged (Richard) and performed. They made it seem so effortless.
Best female rock drummer ever!!!
She knew it all about rithym, thats all about a drummer, its not all about play hard, its about timing and sincronized , she have it , naturally !!! She is one of the best percusionists of all time, period !
That would be Alice de Buhr of Fanny
She really had a tight rhythm. Her hit on the snare was fast and she pulled rolls out of her pocket. I hear very much a jazz influence in her playing. If all she ever played was the drums I would say she was extremely talented. Singing at the same time like that? Mind blowing.
Sheila E says Karen was "the best ... especially for her age ...". She's amazing to watch ... All Around ~ Singing ~ Drumming~Being Beautiful and not Knowing She was gorgeous!~Kind~Truly One of a Kind ...😇
Not even close. You can't even name the other thousands you have not heard.
Simply the best female pop singer of all time.......
I love Karen Carpenter more than the air that I breathe. She is so in touch with her spirit that it's unbelievable. Thank you brother Richard for building the pedestal for the perfect Angel 🎉 ❤ You two are the Yin and Yang of music history. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Karen❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Every generation has a very high bar to follow if they're gonna follow The Carpenters! They were undeniably the Tops in performance & dedication to their craft. They touched the heart strings of the masses with every song and when Karen died we all wept as if she was our sister. 😢 That's what music & musicianship can do. It personalizes us and tells us that we all have the same hardships, joy and love! 😊
I was lucky enough to see the carpenters in Las Vegas in about 1978 or 79. I recently brought one of their tunes to my music jam group and the younger ones didn’t even know who the Carpenters were! Watching this reminds me that these were one of the great talents of the 20th century and deserve a lot more Recollection respect and replay than they get today.
I have never seen this performance of The Carpenters in Australia in 1972 before in which Richard explains the technicalities of how they created their beautiful sound both on their phenomenal records and on stage! He has, as did Karen have, a great sense of humor!😄
Karen will always be my top crush on any human I’ve been exposed to. Angel voice, radiant smile, sweet personality and funny sense of humour. She was just perfect and always will be.
This concert shows the Carpenters at their best. Karen's performance is full of passion. She could express the deepest feelings in her voice as well as in her countenance and gestures as we see in this video. She is completely absorbed in the music. She is able to articulate and demonstrate in the music and lyrics what it is to love.
@@adf8382038 That's really out of bounds.
she rocks those drums....lol
Richard at an early age showed himself to be a great arranger himself. He drove the Carpenters. Pure class.
But his need for control was detrimental to Karen's mental health
He was gifted, Karen was a phenomenon.
When talent was a real thing, when real singers and musicians play concerts... amazing show, simply amazing.
It still is real. Look harder.
Voice from my childhood, such a tragic loss.
I imagine Karen in the 90s producing, singing lead for a Disney film?
What a voice ❤
I love her hairdo in this video. She is so damn pretty!
I cry from the beauty of the most perfect voice
Karen put so much feeling into every song she sang, as though she were living in that moment. True talent to be a lead singer and play the drums and do it so well. Her voice like an "Angel". I applaud her on the early years, she didn't wear makeup. None that can be seen until the later years. She was a natural beauty and taken much too soon. I feel for her brother, talented too and great piano player. I can't imagine the pain of losing Karen had on him. Her parents also. I'll never forget the time and place I was when I heard the News she had died. A life cut short when it should have been a high point in her & Richard's lives. The " CARPENTERS " and Karen will forever live in my heart. R.I.P. KAREN. You will never be forgotten.
BevG181 Unfortunately, the good don't last!'😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I listen and enjoy so many varieties of music from Pat Boone-Elvis-Hendrix-Beatles-Stones-Santana-Sabbath-to modern musics. Yet I feel so blessed to have been able to listen to the Carpenters, such a masterpiece of musical harmony, The Carpenters stands in a class of its own where nobody can match.
What makes one suspect she really didn't know how good she was. She and her brother brought hours of enjoyment into the life of me and mine. We thank you for all of it.
This must be one of the best concerts I've seen in my life: I can't stop crying seeing Karen playing those drums like a master and singing beyond incredible. She has become a guide for me as a musician and I'm so grateful she existed, that I can't even express it with words that will be fair enough. And what a great band The Carpenters were. Right after The Beatles in time: they came in the exact moment.
OMG...they were SO YOUNG. I miss Karen even today.
All talent! Beautiful songs, great arrangements, and Karen Carpenter. My father liked the Carpenters. One of the few singers he had mentioned. WWll Vet.
Would have loved to have seen them. Karen had truly one of the best voices ever. Miss her terribly
One of the most amazing videos I have seen of this magical group.....Karen’s vocals are simply beautiful.....such a natural talent. One of the best vocalists EVER!!!!
Pllp
The best for me.
She's a fatty
Those low tones she does really blast out the room I love it
That lower register of hers is so beautiful and soothing.
When people talk about her voice as special, it's the low tones.
it blows me away....carpenters performing in australia 1972....unreal
Karen was every bit as good a drummer as she was a singer, just as Richard was an amazing pianist and songwriter.
I don't give Rich that much credit as a "pianist". On performances where she sings to a pre-recorded backing track, Rich cannot synchronize the same notes on the piano as in the track. He goes wayyy off! I've noticed this numerous times. Whatever Karen does, she's flawless perfection.
@@Coupydog Yeah, you're right....on LIVE performances, like this one, Richard is spot on, but when he's playing along to a pre-recorded track, he's way off! That's the true test of a great "pianist".....not how they play live, but how they fake it when playing along to tracks. YGTBFKM!
No she wasn't .. she was a stellar singer, and average drummer.
@@morbidmanmusic Check out her drumming on one of their specials with guest Ella Fitzgerald, and see if you still think she is an average drummer
@@morbidmanmusicI think her drumming is as good if not better.
Truly a talented singer and drummer, gone but not forgotten.
Growing up, my mom would always play The Carpenters in the house or in the car. I couldn't stand it. Now, through adult eyes and ears, I can truly appreciate their music. They were so good!!!
Has there ever been a drummer that can sing like Karen carpenter. Not in my lifetime
I agree. Not in my lifetime either and I'm turning 60 years old this month. But there's never been another drummer/singer like Karen Carpenter. She is truly not given the credit she deserves for being a drummer/singer, there is none better. Heck, there's none better if you just say singer without the drummer part, but she was both. And she didn't just slam the drums while she was singing. She's actually playing professional rudiments, flams and etc., like the greats, Joe Morello, Buddy Rich, and etc. She loved Jazz and it shows in her precision playing.
The Carpenters take me back to my late teen years. There music was fresh and different back then. I fell in love with Karens voice, she and Olive Newton-John were the voices I loved most in those years. I miss the days of good music.
This is totally raw, live. ❤ her voice.
she was so talented..
I have no words to talk about her... just unbelieveble!!!
Karen was so beautiful! Thank you. Wish she was still with us. Her music still lives so strong with us still to this day!!! :-) Her music will never go out of style because it's pure, meaningful. Classic!

If I could “like” this 1000 times, I would ❤️❤️
I've been a fan for 50 years - and watch a lot of vids - but have never seen this until tonight- on the 38th anniversary of her passing. How very wonderful to see this live performance and energy on these beloved songs.
As a singer all I can think of is how she sneaks in breaths between singing and drums. Wow
Have loved Carpenters now about 20 years and their is the magic that I find in the comments here, people love Carpenters.
I miss Karen so much, the voice and talent is unsurpassed, her brothers songwriting ability was a springboard on where they catapulted to fame.
It was so much simpler back in the day…
Wow! I am freaking blown away at how good they are live this is outstanding musicianship she is the best singer/drummer I have ever seen …great vocal articulations the while holding down the drum beat that’s like doing five performances at once.
That you realize that fact is unique. Many musicians in the drummers own group don't realize that along with initiation of a given sound they are also responsible for its cessation! Quite a load to carry sometimes. Many musicians are very lucky that most drummers, especially those that read music, and are multi instrumentalists have a good sense of humor.
Singing live sounded exactly like the records…just an amazing voice…no singer could ever do that live👍👏
So young and full of life her voice at this time was at the top.
Man oh Man how I love(ed) Karen Carpenter. My heart so ached as a young man when I saw Karen and heard her angelic voice on TV. And it still does as much as an older fella now. Karen's voice will remain second to none forever
♥️The Carpenters are the soundtrack to my life growing up in the 1970’s. Forever grateful 🕊✨🕯✨♥️
absolutely 100 percent perfect performance.
If they all hadn't pushed her to the forefront, and just let her be her and play drums and sing, she'd probably still be here performing...
She was anirexia! That’s what killed her .
Karen and Richard might be the most purely talented duo in modern music history. Her voice is exquisite, she is a more than capable drummer, and Richard is an expert arranger/writer/producer/keyboardist. I wish we could've heard them in the 80s & 90s.
When perfection and heartbreak come together 💜
She's always perfectly on pitch.
Excellent. Karen at her best. Thank you for posting this.
The majestic force that is Karen Carpenter. Man how I absolutely adore this women. Coming from an avant-garde-Frank Zappa-prog rock-jazz fusion- Bill Evans loving music fan.
+Lime24hr Amen, brother! Real men love Karen Carpenter.
+Lime24hr No matter your musical background, Karen was a special person!
+James She sure was James!
+mstrunn I was trying to figure out who the conductor with his back to the band was conducting, there must have been an orchestra pit behind the stage. I'm with you on Karen's glorious voice, it's never been duplicated and likely never will. A tragic loss of an amazing talent, the world is diminished by her absence.
It's Frank Pooler conducting; orchestra was in the back, Pooler was @ Long Beach State when Karen was there in the choir.
The timbre, the vibrato all while drumming? You must be joking! Her talent is off the scale. Does anyone know when in 1972 this was? Was anyone at the Chevron to see this?
The Carpenters made their first and only tour of Australia from May 8 to May 27,1972(A second tour planned for November 1977 was cancelled), playing Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane. In Sydney, they played a two week "residency" from May 8-20 at the Chevron Hotel in the "Silver Spade Room",a cabaret/restaurant which accommodated about 600 people. With their support act,Denny Brooks, they played two shows each evening at 8.00pm & 11.30pm, which you could see for $6.00Aust($61.00 in 2018).Four more dates were then played, May 22 At Apollo Sport Centre in Adelaide, May 24&25 at Festival Hall Melbourne, where the May 24 show was taped for "The Carpenters in Australia" television special. They then headed north, playing their last Australian show at Festival Hall in Brisbane on May 27.After Australia they headed to Hong Kong,Japan then hence back to the US.Sadly as I was only aged seven in 1972,I was far too young to be able to experience what were clearly some wonderful performances by the group and the AWESOME Karen Carpenter. I do have a vague recollection of seeing this TV special with my family(In glorious, living black & white!)I too would be very interested in the recollections of anyone who attended any of these Australian concerts.

God? Yours? No. He givenher the sickness.
I have played music with my brother for many years. We know what each other is feeling. I think that the way that Karen played the drums was a deep connection to Richard. I could see it in the timing and the rhythm. Something was lost when she was made to give up the drums. While playing the drums, and working with Richard, it seemed that she had found her place. It is sad that she had to give up her comfort zone for the good of the band.

Wow, this is really sophisticated music. Great concert.
As a drummer, I can tell you she is good and singing at the same time is quite the achievement.
I was amazed I had to scroll down this far to get a comment about her drumming. I was very surprised as I only knew her as a singer. The other lead singer that can drum that springs to mind is Sully Erna. His drum duels are awesome... anyway, of topic. I agree singing and playing an instrument at the same time is non trivial.
@@kalicom2937 Yeah, I was surprised as well. I thought I was one of those few who knew she was a drummer cum lead singer. Looks like everybody here knew about that 😂
Seems that you are a fan of drummer / lead singer / composer / songwriter like me. Phil Collins, Roger Taylor, Don Henley, Dave Grohl are some of the famous ones. Recently I had to add Paulina Villarreal of The Warning to that list. Apart from being all the above she also runs the tech. behind the band's live shows with 2 MIDI pedals on floor that trigger Ableton app in a laptop next to her. So while normally there are 2 pedals she has 5 - starting from left - 1 MIDI (on), 1 double kick gear, 1 hi-hat, 1 bass drum & 1 MIDI (off). Here is Pau singing Dust to Dust with her elder sister Daniela on guitar & younger sister Alejandra on bass. BTW the girls supported Godsmack in UFest (Arizona), Buzz Fest (Houston) & exclusively in Dallas in May this year. Godsmack & I Prevail love The Warning.

What a great show. The performers exceptional, the picture and sound quality simply amazing. It's hard to believe it's over 50 years ago we watched this on our Tvs. It was three years before we had colour TV in Australia. When the talent is this good, lack of colour is not an issue.
Stunning and superb, in every facet of music. A legend gone way too soon.
So dissapointed i missed her concert in my home country, Oh thats right i was 1. I hope the tv was on. I love the carpenters music.
