Beginners Mistakes with Commercial Jets in Microsoft Flight Simulator - and How to Avoid Them

  • A guide to the most common mistakes people make when learning to fly the big jets in Microsoft Flight Simulator, and how to avoid then. Ever had the autopilot go nuts just after takeoff? Feel like the plan just goes out of control, and you can't do anything to stop it?
    Most of the time it's because you were either not watching, not predicting what you needed to do next, or you were just too slow in reacting to what was happening - which then caused another situation to develop, and another, and another.
    In this video I go through some common strategies to help you out - the most important of which are (a) make sure you can fly a GA aircraft first, (b) know where the important flight controls are, and (c) be able to get to the important controls quickly.
    Lastly, and I will repeat this until the cows come home - practice, practice, practice, practice, practice. Don't just practice a perfect flight either - practice different situations being thrown at you. Imagine the approach mode button didn't engage - it's not so much "why didn't it engage" - it's "what are you going to do right now?"...
    I hope you enjoy the video :)

    I've watched a lot of your videos and this, in my opinion, is one of your best. I've had the FBW A320 installed for a while now but haven't flown it much. After watching this video, I'm anxious to try it again. On a side note, I have spent time in GA aircraft and can, usually, get them in the air and back on the ground, but I find that I'm always nervous about turning off AP in the commercial airliners on approach. I usually let AP get the commercial jet over the runway threshold, then switch it off, drop the throttle to idle and hope for the best. It's usually at about that moment when I realize I forgot to map the thrust reversers. :-) Thanks for all the great content! Your channel is one of my favorite flight sim channels on RUclips.

    This is fabulous. I am so frustrated with the AP in the A320. I took off today hoping to do some practice ILS & RNAV approaches, but the damned plane ignored everyone I did and just insisted on screaming as fast as it could to more than 28k feet, regardless of how I POUNDED on the altitude key and V/S. Managed, selected, nothing would stop the plane from climbing. At this point I have a single successful ILS approach under my belt but nothing else. I am about ready to just go back to my Cessna 172. At least that works properly for me.

    This is exactly the tutorial video I’ve been searching for, thank you so much for this. I was under the assumption that the waypoints would tell the managed altitude which altitude to go to so you could just leave managed on and it would ascend/descend as necessary throughout the flight. However, from your video I’m starting to doubt that. Could you please explain whether or not the waypoints hold altitude information and if managed mode is able to decide it’s altitudes based only on the waypoints or not? By now, I'm pretty good at starting up from cold and dark and flying/landing the plane, but I have a lot to learn about navigation and autopilot!

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  2 года назад

      You're talking about VNAV. Autopilot has a "Vertical Navigation" mode (VNAV) as well as "Lateral Navigation" (LNAV). If fully configured, in VNAV mode, the aircraft will climb and descend in line with the configured parameters :)

    • @kingcrimson1631
      @kingcrimson1631 2 года назад

      @@jonbeckett Thanks Jonathan. The question I have is what defines the 'configured parameters'? Do the waypoints contain all the altitudes required and the VNAV will transition to them, or is there always some manual input needed?

    Hi Jonathan,
    me again, I have asked how to install the map mode for Little Navmap.
    I like your explanations on the playing flight simulation and the idea using the mouse to do the instrument view, they are plain and easy to realize for a beginner, I have a question on the FBW 320 fly about the autopilot, there are no up and down arrows for managing and selected modes in FCU panel just a hand icon when I hovering the mouse, so the button has no push and pull motion, I use honeycomb bravo throttle quadrant, I am wandering if they are not compatible each other.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  2 года назад

      The APU should not be left on all the time - so it could be that. Or you're out of fuel. It will very much depend on which version of the Airbus you're using, and your realism settings.

    Nice tutorial. We all make errors so don't be too upset but here's what you missed:
    1. Failed to set max auto brakes and arm spoilers before take off.
    2. Rotated about 40 knots too fast!
    3. Retracted flaps too soon but no doubt due to excess rotate/v2 speed
    4. Good circuit and nice recovery after losing Glide Slope
    5. Busted Vref approach speed.
    6. Forgot to set auto brakes and arm spoilers again for landing.
    Still very useful tips though and nice tips about mouse speed around the cockpit.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  2 года назад +1

      Yes - I mentioned a couple of times I wasn't following absolutely everything. I intentionally rotated too fast - I was hoping to see overspeed appear, so I could talk about it - but still wasn't slow enough :) One day I will do an example "hands off flight" with all the correct procedures, using auto brakes, auto throttle, spoilers, etc all the way through. Thanks for the comment :)
